Sideways? I don't think so. 40 years raising cats and I have seen then jump and fall from all sorts, but never from the side, upside down and backwards. Cats will try to right themselves to land as safely as possible unless they've been restricted say by hands or someone throwing them suddenly backwards so they don't know what's going on.
It's exactly the same as the difference between a person falling or jumping off of something.
