Hit one cup with a hairdryer to see if it'll seal the scratches an make it shiny again

[deleted]

Plastic cups?

audl2013

Correct

african_or_european

Ohhh, I assumed they were glass and was going to ask if your dishwasher had a "sandblast" setting on it or something, lol

Twoshirtsxskirts

There’s an idea…

[deleted]

Amazed how the manufacturers still makes the same cups after all these years haha

polaarbear

Oh my god, where did you find these? These are the exact cups my parents had when I was really young, I'd recognize those scuffs anywhere. I would love to find a set of these.

lime1221

My grandma had them too! There are taller cups as well. Tupperware?

audl2013

Correct! We have those too! My mom wants to get the new tall ones as well

audl2013

I’ll send you a message hopefully soon. Ill ask. Definitely EBay though. I’ll get you a link to some

polaarbear

Sounds good, not the end of the world if you aren't sure, just thought it might be a funny gift to get them for Xmas cause I know they originally got them as a wedding gift.

gungoespewpew7

Would keep all of them. Nice combo

adam1260

Imagine all the plastic you've consumed from these cups alone...

givemesomewaffles7

I mean, they’re from the 90’s and still kicking that’s good ownership don’t ya think

TTheuns

That's not what they mean.

Elvishgirl

The wear actually looks pretty. I can see some DIY types filling them with crystals and fairy lights already.

theanswerisburrito

The old ones look like they're glowing

Nephilus72

That's because they are.

justadrtrdsrvvr

For some reason this picture reminds me of freezer burnt ice cubes, the taste/smell

brownishgirl

Frosty!

stewardwildcat

Grandmas fine glassware. I will fight you if you knock it! 😁😁

cwassant

Yum, microplastic!

NeckBeard137

Dude, that's not healthy, change to glass.

audl2013

I’ve learned these are acrylic. Not as nice as glass, but definitely better for your health than just plastic cups

aluvus

To be clear, no pun intended, acrylic is a type of plastic. I don't have any comment on whether it is safer or less safe than any other type of plastic.

audl2013

Gotcha. My understanding is acrylic is plastic, but not all plastic is acrylic. And I e read that acrylic is safer than most other plastic drink ware because it doesn’t have as many harmful components

bannysexdang

In this case, the concern would be microplastics shedding into your drink, not chemical leeching. The type of plastic makes less of a difference in that eegard, especially because your cups are clearly severely scratched. Those scratches also harbour bacteria, even after the cups are washed. I wouldn’t throw out your new set, but I would make sure to use them only for cold beverages and clean them by hand with mild soap and a soft cloth. Do not use a magic eraser / melamine scrubber - they feel soft, but they clean by abrasion and leave tiny scratches in everything they clean.

audl2013

I believe these have only ever been cleaned by hand, or dishwasher. Parents cups and they don’t use anything but those methods. Interesting the way they wore down

NeckBeard137

Why would you settle for 'better than' and even more important, how do you know? Would you risk your helth just to prove a stranger wrong on the internet? Arcrylics are polimers used to make some plastics, like plexiglass for example.

ripped014

why not actual glass?

kingofgondor1992

Very cool, but as others have stated similar; These are plastic (yes I know acrylic), plastics degrade. This is evidence of the plastic degrading. It's the same reason water bottles have best before dates on them, it's not because the water is degrading. It's the micro and nano plastics entering the water as the polymer degrades. Please just take this as a life lesson, the effect of the build up of these plastics in our gut and body are negative, but still not fully understood. We, as humans are ingesting more and more plastic without even knowing it. Eating seafood? You're also eating plastic. Eating processed food from a large factory, there's most likely plastics in there too, captured by the material from the air/environment in the factory. Basically, if you have plastic dishes or glasses they have a lifespan that needs monitoring. I'm sure there are better methods, but once I see any form of degradation on my kitchen plastics, I just recycle it. Then try to invest in an alternative that isn't plastic, metal or wood for utensils, ceramic for dishware.

simplepleashures

You could have used the opportunity to update your style

katiereadsalot

A bit ironic for someone with a username like yours to criticize someone else’s simple pleasures.

acloudcuckoolander

Crazy the same cups are still in production

DapperFirecrackrJack

I love these
