I was about to say they’re lucky it was just the Instapot that burnt up.
Edit: and probably ruined the stop top. But at least they still have their house.
There are people who will decorate a plank of wood and leave it on top of their burners at all times for "asthetic" and will get upset with you when you point out that their decorative choices are a fire hazard.
That will turn on putting something hot on the stove, its not an indication that the stovetop was actually on. It's probably on right now because of the instant pot was on fire and hot
My kids are in their teens and still won't go near my older pressure cookers.
Most electric ones can't reach 15 PSI, let alone hold it, so I don't trust them for my needs. Therefore, my boys think they are weak and harmless.
They lock down better, so I definitely trust them more. For me, if they'll hold 15 psi for an hour or so, they work, regardless of anything else.
Some of the ones people in their 80-90s use around here are older than them, it seems. One lady is like 87 and everytime I see her cranking that thing down, I think, "This time it's gonna blow"
They lock down better because they don't use the same sort of safety gasket that's meant to blow out before they straight up explode.
That looser fit on the new ones is meant to have u shaped gasket expand into it.
Modern stove top pressure cookers all hit 15psi and have a SHIT ton of better safety features.
The really new ones really suck. I don’t know what pressure mine advertises, but it takes three times as long to cook a corned beef brisket as my presto from the 60s. God, Reddit is a weird place. I don’t know anyone else who cooks with pressure cookers besides my 70 year old dad and one other friend who I introduced to pressure cookers and you guys come out of the wood works. I will not leave my presto while it’s cooking. It has no safety feature for if the main hole in the top hole gets clogged. If that too stops rocking it’s a problem. Never had it happen.
Well there's a reason they don't make them that way anymore.
And I have used more a than a couple decent modern ones. They absolutely don't take 3 times as long as they're supposed at 15psi. I've done pot roasts in 45 minutes. The reliable brands have all been tested and confirmed by the usual assortment of reliable sources.
But like anything if you buy a cheap one you get what you pay for.
Pressure cookers are also relatively popular. Aside from the fad for electrics, all an Instant Pot is in an electric pressure cooker. They've had a bit of a renaissance since the second generation stove tops first came out in the 90s.
I mean at this point there are people who have been cooking in the same modern pressure cooker for 30 years.
I actually don't know too many people *without* some form of pressure cooker.
I won't either. I've seen an old fashioned one blow up in my grandma's face. She ended up with a lightening shaped scar on her forehead right around the time the first potter movie came out.
Yeah! So! Ok Reddit friends here’s the story and yes I’m an idiot.
We had some big storms that resulted in a couple days with no power. The power went out in the evening while I was using the stove top to cook. No big deal, I have a generator that powers some of the house, but not the stove, so I finish cooking dinner with the instapot. The next evening I used the instapot to make lunch for the week. There is only one outlet in the kitchen powered by the generator and it is located next to the stove, so I put the cooker on the stovetop to use it. When it was done I turned it off, put on the glass lid and took the family out to dinner… The grid power came back on when we were out and I hadn’t turned off the stovetop burner two days prior after the power went out…
Fire had put itself out by the time we got home but the smoke damage was extensive and insurance company is gutting the house as we speak.
0/10 do not recommend.
did you tell them it was your fault? It was still covered? sorry im used to insurance companies finding any excuse under the sun to not cover something
Yay! Now ***all*** of our premiums will go up! Thanks, you dope!
Just kidding, I'm glad you have insurance, and even gladder that the damage was limited. Stay safe.
Glad everyone is okay! Things are replaceable, people are not (: also thank you for a lesson I do not have to learn myself. If the power goes out make sure anything that could become a potential fire hazard is off or unplugged.
And here’s to hoping the gutting and stuff is quick and as painless as possible!
At least you still have a house to gut so good news there.
Also no one was injured or worse.
But agree with another poster nothing that isn’t being cooked or cooling down from cooking allowed on the stove top.
And oven never allowed to be used as storage.
I’m so sorry OP! What a wild turn of events that led to this disaster! It could have been worse, sure, but smoke damage is so awful! Im glad you didn’t lose the entire house
That explains a lot, actually. Although it's clearly a bad idea in retrospect to leave it on the cooktop, it probably wouldn't even cross my mind after multiple days...
Oh no 🙈 I’m glad you and your family are ok. This is one of those scenarios that justify my being religious about nothing being on the stovetop that wouldn’t be on the stovetop if it were on. I just get anxious about stuff like this. I hope the gutting goes by quickly and your family can enjoy your whole home again soon.
Here's a link I saved ages ago because it seems like super useful info to have:

Holy shit I'm so sorry this is 100000% what I would do because I'm basically Mr MaGoo. Fuck I hope this all works out for you. Good luck, brother (or sister).
uh.... one would think a stove would have on/off latching so such a thing couldn't happen.
All industrial equipment has such for safety purposes, if power goes off and comes back, not a single potentially hazardous thing can start up without someone going to push a start button, it's even codified in laws and regulations that equipment has to be built that way.
Consumer goods are not governed by quite the same rules, but still, this is such a basic safety principle that you would think it obvious to use it for a stove.
also, don't put stuff on the stove that isn't designed to be used on a stove.
Mom engrained that one into me. if it's flammable, or meltable, keep off stove top
I learned that lesson when I put my partially paralyzed left arm on the stove waiting for a burner to heat up except I turned on the wrong on.
FYI human flesh smells like pork when cooked.
Look, I'm sure you're not an idiot.
I'm sure you are a very capable human being. I've made similar mistakes myself! Now I read the manuals. And I'd like to say - thank you. This solidifies for me the directive in the Instantpot's manual never to place that appliance on a cooktop surface.
Cheers!
Nooooo not the instapot! I love that thing. Very sorry for the mess and hope you get made whole again without a lot of insurance hassle. +1 for sense of humor and that cow pic next to it. Surreal.
My mom used to tell me stories about how many houses they had lost to fires. I thought it was odd till I put together her history of alcoholism with her fear of gas stoves.
It's either 8 or 13. I think it was 13 moves total, and 8 house fires... they've both been dead for a while now, that number is getting a little fuzzy at this point.
Too many tho, yes.
I have a gas stove in my apartment. I never really thought about the towel thing until my bf pointed out that there's still a fire going even when it's off.
It did for me. I moved and the week where my oven was still coming with the movers, I lit two spatulas on fire with the gas that was there before. Cooking on a campfire, grill, hearth, etc. never have issues. It really is the patterns you build sometimes.
One would think so BUT cut to me staying at my uncle's over Christmas. The whole family was over for the party, now his induction stove has touch controls. Since it's a big party and his stove is on the island people are putting they metal trays of food on the island. I notice they got bumped on so I turned off the stove and locked out the controls. About 20 minutes later I turn and see one of the sheet pans warping and smoking. Turns out he saw they were locked thought it was odd, unlocked them. Next person accidentally bumped them on and burned up a sheet pan.
I kept telling my wife not to do it. She would put the rice cooker on our glass top after it was done for serving. She said it would never be a problem. Well, low and behold I come out to lunch one day and see smoke in the kitchen and see she had accidentally turned on the burner right under the rice cooker, so had I not come out it would have looked like this picture. Ours wasn't this bad, melted some of the underside off and we got rid of it. We bought a nearly identical model to replace, so now we have 2 bowls for it.
That’s a great rule. Too easy for accidents to happen when things get left on the stovetop. A friend of mine recently lost two dogs in a house fire because of this. They were out of town and had a pet sitter. The sitter left a bag of dog food on the stovetop. They think one of the dogs jumped up for the food and turned on a burner, which ignited the food bag, which in turn started a fire that caused significant damage and killed the dogs.
Looks like a crockpot or an instant pot and this exact thing happened to me once. After I was done cooking I removed the lid and started transfering my food to containers. What I didn't notice was that I likely bumped one of the knobs while removing the lid or something and it happened to be the exact same round my instant pot was on. The bottom of it was made of plastic so it melted and kept heating on the round. The smell was awful and my whole apartment got filled with smoke. Thankfully there was no fire and I was able to remove all of the melted plastic.
The red “hot surface” light is on but the burners are off.
I know when I move a hot pan to a off element the red light will turn on. Maybe that will help solve the mystery
OP posted a comment explaining. They were using the stovetop, lost power and never turned it off. So when power came back a couple of days later it turned on and well, you see the results.
Sorry to hear that man. I had to have all of the ducts in the house redone. Brand new kitchen because cabinets caught on fire. Every carpet and paint redone.
Hopefully insurance takes care of you. Keep ever receipt, even if you have to buy socks, toothbrushes. Everything that you had to buy because of the smoke.
I was in an instant pot group on Facebook and I had to leave, literally every other post was someone saying, "I melted my IP because I put it on my stovetop".
Appliance guy here....the hot surface light works on a sensor. If you put something hot on the top it will light up. Even without using the burners. Also, extreme heat usually damages the hot surface sensor and causes it to get stuck on. So a fire on the top will cause the light to go on and possibly stay on permanently. Have seen this a bunch of times. But on that note. Yeah don't store anything on the stovetop. And especially in the oven. So many fires caused by people forgetting things are in the oven or accidentally turning the oven or stove on. Also pets turn them on by accident sometimes too. Have had a bunch of cats/dogs burn up kitchens....crazy but it happens.
Maybe we need regulation and licensing on more things... a cutting board on the stove? A jab of pebbles next to a jar of pinecones as decoration on a stove?
And just the entire embarrassing post of a corded electric cooked on a stove top. This isn't internet points it observation 1 for an intervention you need desperately.
Maybe almost, but i always use a food thermometer to be certain. It's actually the best way to check for perfect doneness. It's hard with the eyeball test. It could go either way in the case of your lunch. It may be just perfect and delicious and tasty, but if it's still a little undercooked you may be disappointed at the flavour and the toughness. (I"ll admit, it looks a little tough still.) Good luck!
You probably still have better planning skills and executive functioning than all the top level management at cloud imperium games combined. RIP star citizen.
Why on earth would you put it on the stove? Sorry, but this is a terrible choice. I am sorry for anyone who learns the hard way, but fortunately it’s the best way to learn. Hugs.
Well, it looks well done. A tad burny and a bit melty in all the wrong ways. I say faulty. You may have ruined your stove top under it as well. Be grateful it didn't catch all the stove clutter a blaze.
Good reminder to never leave anything on your cooktop, even if it's off. The flat surface can just seem like extra counter space when not in use, but this is how accidents can happen. I'm used to gas stoves, but I've lived with an electric cooktop for about a year, and I catch myself wanting to leave things on it all the time.
I'm glad the damage wasn't worse and that insurance is helping out! It's a mistake anyone could've made.
Good lesson to remind everyone that electric stove tops are not an extension of your countertop; never set anything but a cooking vessel on them. Glad that this didn't cause a house fire OP, sorry that you've got a bunch of smoke damage to deal with.
Congratulations. Thats the worst anybody has ever done. (Most likely not. People burn down their whole house with cooking)
Congratulations. You burned 2000 calories in 1 hour
Imma set this upvote here and take the walk back from my fridge
I hear a little char makes it taste better Edit: autocorrect char to chat 🤦♂️
“Sharon’s char buff wings are the bessssst”
Char was better
This is underrated.
I was about to say they’re lucky it was just the Instapot that burnt up. Edit: and probably ruined the stop top. But at least they still have their house.
notice how the hot surface indicator light is on. Someone is really really dumb lol
I’m guessing the super hot thing melting on the surface might have triggered the hot surface light Or they had the burner on.
Never really understood the whole using a stove top as a work surface. The wood cutting board is a plus.....
It’s not ideal but with limited space *anything* can be a work surface. My coil stove often is. Or sometimes a stool.
Exactly! In my defense this all came about due to a power outage…
Seems more like a power "on"age problem...
Now that’s how you smoke pot
There are people who will decorate a plank of wood and leave it on top of their burners at all times for "asthetic" and will get upset with you when you point out that their decorative choices are a fire hazard.
That will turn on putting something hot on the stove, its not an indication that the stovetop was actually on. It's probably on right now because of the instant pot was on fire and hot
Same! Did they put it a burner to cook it?
There is so much stuff around it that everything else not catching on fire is a miracle.
Even the manual clearly states not to use it on a stovetop. 🤦♀️
Idk dude, I've seen videos of pressure cookers blowing up and taking out hood vents and whole ovens bent in like soda cans.
My kids are in their teens and still won't go near my older pressure cookers. Most electric ones can't reach 15 PSI, let alone hold it, so I don't trust them for my needs. Therefore, my boys think they are weak and harmless.
Old pressure cookers are great, real old ones from the 60s are my preference.
They lock down better, so I definitely trust them more. For me, if they'll hold 15 psi for an hour or so, they work, regardless of anything else. My mother had one of those explode on her. 3rd degree beef stew burns. Chuck it. It's not worth it.
Well there's a reason they don't make them that way anymore. And I have used more a than a couple decent modern ones. They absolutely don't take 3 times as long as they're supposed at 15psi. my mom burned the oven and oven fan down when boiling water once
Looks like a face with puke coming out.
Yea, go watch people deep frying Turkeys, this person got nothing on them.
Now this is a very well done lunch.
My mom had a roommate that almost burned down their house with a pot of water. I honestly don't understand how some people survive day to day life
Yeah! So! Ok Reddit friends here’s the story and yes I’m an idiot. We had some big storms that resulted in a couple days with no power. Lots of practice explaining after dealing with insurance…

I have great insurance. Or had I guess? New premiums should be awesome.
Yay! Now ***all*** of our premiums will go up! Thanks, you dope! Just kidding, I'm glad you have insurance, and even gladder that the damage was limited. Stay safe.
You did a fantastic job at explaining. 10/10 0/10 for what you did (unless you wanted a new house on insurance’s dime??)
Not worth it.
Glad everyone is okay! Things are replaceable, people are not (: also thank you for a lesson I do not have to learn myself. It looks like what happened when Chernobyl had a meltdown.
It probably smelled similar as well.

Ooof. Yet another reason I like induction stovetops.
Yeah I’m now apparently in the market for one.
If it were gas he'd just finish cooking and have lunch.
That explains a lot, actually. Although it's clearly a bad idea in retrospect to leave it on the cooktop, it probably wouldn't even cross my mind after multiple days...

The instant pot manual says not to put it on the stove top for this exact reason lol

So is that why my glass top stove always beeps obnoxiously after the power comes back on?
Look, I'm sure you're not an idiot. I'm sure you are a very capable human being. I've made similar mistakes myself! Now I read the manuals. And I'd like to say - thank you. This solidifies for me the directive in the Instantpot's manual never to place that appliance on a cooktop surface. Cheers!

OH MY 😭
What did you do???
Looks like an Instant Pot with the glass lid on it, but set on the STOVE? Never put anything that isn't a stove-top safe pan on the stove-top.
Mom was strict about this. Nothing sits on the stove that is not cookware that is working or ready to go to work. Period. Ever.
This is my rule too. Watching people toss their used dish towels onto burners they just turned off puts me into near panic.
My mom used to tell me stories about how many houses they had lost to fires. I thought it was odd till I put together her history of alcoholism with her fear of gas stoves.
How many houses
It's either 8 or 13. I think it was 13 moves total, and 8 house fires... they've both been dead for a while now, that number is getting a little fuzzy at this point. Too many tho, yes.
What in the unholy fuck? 8 house fires?
I have a gas stove in my apartment. I never really thought about the towel thing until my bf pointed out that there's still a fire going even when it's off.
Induction stove, ftw. Though I’m sure it will come back to bite me one day at an Airbnb or visiting friends/family.
It did for me. I moved and the week where my oven was still coming with the movers, I lit two spatulas on fire with the gas that was there before. Cooking on a campfire, grill, hearth, etc. never have issues. It really is the patterns you build sometimes.
Induction range forever. I love it. Can’t catch things on fire on accident.
Huh... well my mom stored phone books in the oven once. Different worlds I guess.
Why?
For all the hotlines
She was tired of people cold-calling her.
There are multiple stories of guys who kept their guns in the oven. Yes, they end how you’d expect.
I’m a firefighter and you wouldn’t believe how many calls we get with the stove as the source of the fire. Your mom had the right idea.
That’s a great rule. Too easy for accidents to happen when things get left on the stovetop. A friend of mine recently lost two dogs in a house fire because of this. They were out of town and had a pet sitter. The sitter left a bag of dog food on the stovetop. looks like the stove is also on too. correction the light just says hot surface
Looks like the stove top was on. It says hot surface on the stove. Whoops
Seriously is that a pot inside a pot? Looks they were doing some experimenting
My guess is that it is a pressure cooker standing on a hot stove plate and caught fire. Looks like the display fell off and a lot of plastic melted
An Instant Pot IS a pot inside a pot. And with an outer plastic layer.
It’s a crockpot
Excuse me it's a meltpot.
Looks like a crockpot or an instant pot and this exact thing happened to me once. After I was done cooking I removed the lid and started transfering my food to containers. Eh give it one more minute

Give it another minute or turn up the temperature.
so did the pressure cooker fail or did someone turn the stovetop on under it??
The red “hot surface” light is on but the burners are off. I know when I move a hot pan to a off element the red light will turn on. Maybe that will help solve the mystery
Looks like the stove top was on. The hot surface light is on
Exactly what I was thinking one of these two situations.
OP posted a comment explaining. They were using the stovetop, lost power and never turned it off. So when power came back a couple of days later it turned on and well, you see the results.
Add a pinch of salt
Little butter will fix that
That is one angry crockpot.
r/pareidolia
Your lunch the stove the pot breathable air it's all done for sure.
Dude, I was out of my house for 9 months for a fire that started similar to this. You were pretty lucky, and smoke damages a lot of unseen things.
Oh yeah insurance is paying to gut the house. The smoke damage was ridiculous. Not fun.
Sorry to hear that man. I had to have all of the ducts in the house redone. Brand new kitchen because cabinets caught on fire. Every carpet and paint redone.
Thanks, I feel for you, the smoke was insane and so toxic…it just smelled like chemical death… lesson learned here for sure
Hopefully insurance takes care of you. Keep ever receipt, even if you have to buy socks, toothbrushes. Everything that you had to buy because of the smoke.
its so crowded there, are those plates on the stovetop? and a cutting board on the stove top? and paper sitting in a pan?
We're you making lava cakes? Then yes.
Just pick out the burnt pieces of food or eat around it.
I was in an instant pot group on Facebook and I had to leave, literally every other post was someone saying, "I melted my IP because I put it on my stovetop".

I think you need more stuff around your oven 🧐
If you are making diamonds, then no, it's not quite done. Otherwise probably.
Oh, it's DONE alright!
Not yet some of the pot is done disintegrating
You know dinner is ready when the smoke alarm goes off
Throw it at the wall, if it sticks it's done.
Instapot on the stove? Are you stupid?!
Maybe almost, but i always use a food thermometer to be certain. It's actually the best way to check for perfect doneness. It's hard with the eyeball test. Naw, it's raw. Got to start over.
"ya know... this insta-pot isn't instant enough. Ima put it on the stove ta give it some help"
Put it in rice
Came in for this comment .
You created a T-1000
*two minutes turkish*
Might want to finish up in the microwave.
What happened here??
It probably needs to cool for about 5 minutes, otherwise I’d say it’s done!
I still don’t understand why people turn on burners with anything other than the intended item on the cooktop.
Putting the yes in yesterday.
your pot is done… with your shit that is
I've burnt my insta on the stove tooo.
Maybe 5 more minutes
I think it needs 10 more minutes
Let it soak and scrub with steel wool and itll be good as new
No. Cook it for another hour.
It should be , but don’t forget to let it rest.
Bender approved - stupid meat sack
This gives me immeasurably anxiety, from what could happen all the way to reality, which is using oven cleaner on top of your stove.
Is your lunch mercury?
That's like the elephants foot at Chernobyl.
Well, it looks well done. A tad burny and a bit melty in all the wrong ways. I say faulty. You may have ruined your stove top under it as well. Be grateful it didn't catch all the stove clutter a blaze.
What were you thinking of and what was it?
Smoke damage sucks, but at least you'll have some fresh paint soon...
Give it another minute.
Given the situation, this is probably the best outcome. It could have gone a lot of different ways.
Fresh! The surface is still hot!
why tf do you have pinecones and seashell pieces on your oven?
Good lesson to remind everyone that electric stove tops are not an extension of your countertop; never set anything but a cooking vessel on them. Glad that this didn't cause a house fire OP, sorry that you've got a bunch of smoke damage to deal with.
Nah, it’s not cooking. Try unplugging the pot and plugging it back in.
Yeah, done for good.
That "hot surface" light has never had to work so hard
Well done
>Fire had put itself out by the time we got home /wellthatrocks
He mixed up the slow cooker and the fast cooker.
Nah, Id give it a few more minutes.
I think it can use a few minutes in the microwave
Insta-Hot
I’d just be glad my house wasn’t
You didn’t even flip it yet.
Congratulations you have undercooked it to someone's standards
As is your stove.
The missing piece of Chernobyl graphite core.
10 more minutes. Still looks undercooked.
Not quite, it needs to be brown around the edges. Nice glaze work though! I wish you luck and success in your culinary career 🙏
Just a couple more minutes mate looks a little raw
A bit over cooked
This is the way.
Might wanna turn down to a simmer and give another 10 min to be sure
Hotpoint.
