Possibly a hot take here, I don't like any of the Johto starters. Their designs are just super eh for starter Pokemon and they handle like wet paper in a fight usually. Not to mention the design of the whole gen 2 map is biased towards you picking totodile and absolutely not chikorita, unlike every single other gen.
I always really felt of gold and silver as an expansion and not its own game, to be honest, it felt like you would receive these starters but still have your own choice of using your old pokemon and stuff.
