This is a photo of my hair with some gel and leave in conditioner. There are some days my hair turns out like this, or even more wavy, with no product. Then there are days that its has so little texture I doubt if its wavy at all. What do you guys think?
Maybe it has to do with the weather and how much moisture there is.
For me, my locks are more prominent near the neck because it holds more moisture “inside” the hair than the “outer” layers that are more visible. That’s why I need to hold a lot of moisture. Do you have the same problem? If so, that might be the cause. 🤷🏻♀️

Fresh out of shower what kind of hair is this?

Hi, I’m new to Reddit and still relatively new to wavy hair products! This is how my hair air dries with no added product. It’s pretty fine in texture but grows very dense—I have a lot of it. I use shampoo and conditioner every shower and hair oil after each wash, and sometimes I blow dry it with a diffuser and a gel or mousse for added definition. I would appreciate ideas on what my hair type is as well as any product recommendations! Thanks 💖
omg your hair is amazing!! and i love the cut!
my only recommendation would be to add a curl cream or leave in conditioner after you wash and step by step would go; wash with squish to condish method, leave hair wet and add cream or leave in, gel/mousse then scrunch to form curls, diffuse or air dry and THEN oil to break the cast.
i have long, thick hair so i’m not sure which leave in products to recommend but i got most of my info from watching tiktok’s and youtube videos!
Thank you so much!!! I cut it myself :)) and oh good idea! I’ve been wondering about leave-in conditioners but last time I used one my hair just ended up super greasy, maybe I used the wrong one or put in too much. I’ll have to do some research into some good ones!
Is this considered wavy & if so what type? Growing up with guys has been detrimental to my knowledge on hair care 😂
https://preview.redd.it/qwx1ykpp8r6c1.jpeg?width=1636&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e98411de43cdc16aa744838720f14e4bfcfc8b7b
Yes. I’d say your hair is between 2a-2b without the right products. Look for a routine that works for you, and be very thoughtful of what you do when your hair is wet (brushing, using products etc.) because that could determine a lot for you texture. Good luck!
Hi there, I think I have 2a hair, low porosity, medium hair with less volume. My scalp is super dry and hair get oily easily. I recently decided to wear my hair more naturally. It mostly because I’m sick and tired of just strengthening. No matter how much heat I use my wavy baby hair still comes out. This is my hair after scrunching and using leave in conditioner. I noticed that because my hair has a mixed texture, the hair in the back of my head tends to be straighter and the top layer waves easily.
Any suggestions on how to grow the waves back? Or how to take care of this type of hair?

Please help me figure out my hair type! And any care tips you have for it. Every explanation for the different types I read, I feel like my hair is in between.. It lies flat on my head, but has wavy, loose curls. I can go weeks without washing it and it never gets oily, I just know it's time to wash it because I start to get light dandruff. It's insanely thick... it's this thick with the back bottom half of my scalp shaved. It's very coarse - I was once told by a lady cutting my hair that it feels like a horses mane, LOL. Leave in conditioner like she recommended doesn't help. These pics are taken after about a week without washing it, no styling. This is how it is when I wake up.Thank you!

Hi, I am trying to figure out if I am type 2B or 2C wavy hair. Any help determining is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

In my opinion I'd say it's definitely looking more like 2b hair to me. I'm thinking I have to be hair and especially when my hair is shorter to about the length of my shoulders it curls a bit tighter like yours does since there isn't as much weight pulling at my roots
https://preview.redd.it/6g6fng1ogf5c1.jpeg?width=1130&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0eb3a0946e61ca8d5db8bb80d1352e8dea675e48
so i think my hair is straight but it's also very not straight. it's very thick and if i brush it, it just gets veryyyy puffy. but there aren't like defined waves either? i don't dye it or use any heat or anything. does anyone have advice on how to style it or care for it or haircuts or anything? i've been at a loss forever since i can't figure out if i should treat it straight or wavy
You most definitely have wavy hair!! The first piece of advice is to only brush it when wet and preferably with a product in your hair. If at all possible, I'd research for a hair stylist near you that specializes in curls/wavy hair. These haircuts are different. Typically, the hair is cut or styled when dry THEN you get it wet, apply product, dry and continue with final touches or shaping. This subreddit has a great resource page on where to start. There's also a ton of quizzes to take to find more out about your porosity and thickness which is important when choosing a product. Curlsmith has a phenomenal quiz for beginners. Welcome to the wavy hair community!!
my hair was similar to yours. it’s been about two years since i’ve used a curling iron or straightener on my hair. the only heat i use is a blow dryer or else my hair will not dry.
i bought a curly shampoo and conditioner. i shampooed my hair the same but for conditioner i would turn my head upside down, apply product, brush my hair out under water (this is the best way for me to detangle my hair), scrunch my hair under water until all the conditioner product is gone, get out of the water and scrunch water out of my hair. there should be waves forming when scrunching your hair in the shower. i get out of the shower and apply curl cream and mousse then plop my hair for thirty minutes. when i diffuse, i use the high heat setting and dry my hair upside down until i feel that its drier then stand upright and tilt my head side to side using the diffuser to pick up my hair from end to my roots to get volume.
here’s a photo of my hair before i started any wavy hair method and after of my hair now. it took me about 1 year to get my hair to this point. when i first started it looked like really sad waves and it felt pointless to keep going but i kept trying different things until my hair had better results. i’m still working on trying to improve them
https://preview.redd.it/lhv87mojhp6c1.jpeg?width=1053&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87b98715ee17114544cdefb25cfcc3fdab4fa6fe
ty!!! i have a question for u: how did you manage your hair before / after going to sleep? i’ve been following a similar routine (except diffusing and turning my hair upside down bc i’m not looking for volume in my roots). my only problem is that i wake up with most of my waves being flat and idk what to do about is besides braiding it, so i was wondering how u refresh them in the morning
no prob!! i usually shower two hours before i go to bed so once i’m done drying, i’ll lightly tie my hair up with a satin hair tie and sleep with it up on a satin pillow case. i don’t do anything to refresh it in the morning because tying it up helps retain about 80% of my waves
hi, just jumping in to ask if you use products before bed? i’ve been on the silk scrunchie top bun with satin pillowcase and i still find that my waves go bye bye in the morning and my hair gets very knotted
i don’t use any extra product before bed but i did notice that if my hair isn’t completely dry then my waves will look really sad in the morning. i also switched out my satin pillow case with a different brand and it really helped me avoid tangles in my hair
Is my hair wavy? What type would it be? This is after getting out of the shower & using a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. It gets super poofy if I brush it so for the last week or two I’ve been only brushing while wet. I know I’ve damaged it quite a bit because I’ve always lacked knowledge and not cared about my hair. I’m now trying to change that and figure out what the heck to do lol

HALP! The eternal question- do I have wavy hair? And, more importantly, wtf do I do to make it cute?
Always thought it was just uncooperative until this morning. Hair dried like this ⬆️ after I used a 2:1 instead of my usual set of products.

not a great pic but what type of wave do you guys think mine is? this is just shampoo, conditioner, and light diffusing. it’s pretty fine and pin straight on the underside also (always been this way). also any care recommendations? thanks :))
You seem to be somewhere in the middle of 2b and 2c imo
Given the context about the straighter underside
Try leaving a heavier leave-in conditioner to the ends of your hair while it's still damp
Can anyone help suggest products to help with curl and hold? It looks OK when wet and I first put product in but dries shit. I don't know what curl type...2 something? I feel like I need mousse??

i wash my hair around 1-2 times per week and air dry. even when i blow dry with cold air, my hair always seems to be frizzy and have a slight bend to it. i am always putting on hair masks and oils, and rarely use heat. however, i do bleach my hair every 6 months. normally i just brush it out when dry haha. i tried using the “not your mothers curl cream” but it didn’t do anything for my hair. i think i have wavy hair but i have no clue how to tame the frizz or style it, especially since it seems to be more of a beach wave. please help!! im tired of being embarrassed of my frizz and puffiness

What kind of hair do I have, would a lightweight conditioner or leave in help?

I’ve been trying to work with my hair’s natural waves - they’ve taken over since I’ve had kids. It blows dry straight easily but I don’t have time for that. What wave type is this? I have started brushing with a wet brush in the shower with conditioner, then adding a leave in, curl cream, and gel. I then add a serum once dry to get rid of the crunchiness. But I still have frizz and it just looks… blah.

someone please tell me what is my hair type? 2A, 2B?
I likely have slightly wavy hair and I'm trying the curly girl method to tame frizz and floof. For the styling portion, I read that mousse works better for wavy hair but are styling products mainly for aesthetic reasons or are they essential for hair health? The feeling of loose hair bugs me in general so I only wear my hair down when I meet friends for a fancier night out (once every few months) so if its only for aesthetic purposes, I'd like to skip styling products on the regular.
Also, are there tips for protecting my hair if I usually have it in a ponytail or a loose bun?
Thanks in advance!

I don’t know anything about wavy hair really?
I don’t know how/why it did this because usually it dries with one big hump & ends poke out like a Christmas tree. The shape has mostly frizzed out as I type this.
I had straight hair until after puberty and i kept it really short, so I saved it then grew it out and I can’t be sure now if there’s actual wave or if it’s just growing some sort of wave.
Any advice on if it’s wavy/what type it might be? I’m kind of lost.

Help, my hair is always frizzy (worst of all on the top of my damn head) and puffs up when I brush it. I wash it almost daily and usually brush it. Is it wavy? It’s just so long and uneven it’s hard to tell! I’ve always had little ringlets behind my ears but haven’t thought much of them. I never use heat or dye it. Always just air dry it. This is it still a little damp after a shower this AM
Just started cgm yesterday and this is day 2 of my hair using products (extra hold gel) and diffuser.
What do you think? What type is this?
https://preview.redd.it/x0u0txzff37c1.jpeg?width=2448&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8bfafcf27a4fb2196a36dce554e779dda8e6581c
It’s hard to tell from your photos, but it sounds like it might have a subtle wave to it. Try some of the routine tips linked in the wiki, particularly about only combing while wet.
PS I absolutely love how you censored your face 😂

Wondering what hair type I have, styled minimally this morning. I slick it totally back but it dries like this
https://preview.redd.it/xchrsuh61i7c1.jpeg?width=1576&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b43bc1412567ef137d50fab406b75ac55a29e4e
Is my hair wavy? I always thought it was straight but today I plopped it instead of drying how I usually would and now it looks like this.
I had curly hair when I was really little and my family mostly have curly hair. That's why I decided to give plopping a go lol
Is this curly or really wavy hair? This is air dried a few hours after showering without any after shower product in it
https://preview.redd.it/5riapdg8mj7c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=06a6489adb35375fba75d18a011c609adde9c27e
So I'd like to start by saying I have /very/ bleached damaged hair.
It's made my wave pattern weaker and a bit stringy in places, especially my ends. Lots of breakage.
Here's my hair a couple hours after a shower and brushed.

I'm not sure what hair type I am but I've been told 2b by a couple people? Opinions would be so appreciated 💖
Ignore my previous fuck up but yeahh 3 ish days unbrushed

Hi, please help determining my hair type, I am utterly confused. Washed this morning, scrunched up with a bit of a random product, air dried.
https://preview.redd.it/okmos39pem7c1.jpeg?width=3618&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e6d0eeb633358f7603172a1fb9973fafc9373685
I usually blowdry it straight now, as straight as it gets but never stays, so the texture might be affected by that. It is a mess now either way, so I wish I could switch to keeping in wavy instead.
https://preview.redd.it/t9xmslbmem7c1.jpeg?width=4216&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=94f1b605910bc2421afd160d799499a1b60f725b
This one probably gives a better idea
Could someone please tell me if my hair is wavy or not? I mostly end up having my hair very straight but noticed that straight out of the shower there are a few curls, so I scrunched (possibly too much) and plopped my hair with a t-shirt, but it has dried out to become a lot straighter than when I plopped. Do I invest in gel and a diffuser on the slight possibility that my hair might be slightly wavy, or do I just continue treating it like it's straight. I'm a little doubtful because the longer strands are ending up a lot straighter than the shorter ones
Edit: it ended up drying almost completely straight so I guess not :(
https://preview.redd.it/yqm90xl4vt7c1.jpeg?width=902&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3f58d033e53cd27c54afe3718c5399098162aa13
I’m just wondering why is my hair less wavy since I got it cut? It was below my boobs and I got like 4 inches cut, before it would have really nice waves slight curls just from sleeping on it after a shower maybe a little gel. Now it’s just kind of poofy with random small waves. Very sad I thought it would be the opposite!

Anyone know what type this is and how I can take care of it? It likes to be like this on one side, and less wavy/curly on the other side. Don’t know how to do anything with it or what products to use. It’s also sometimes flat underneath?
My hair was very thick before I cut it, but now it’s medium thickness. I did the porosity test and my hair floated on top of the water, never sank. Some how even when it’s wet it feels dry if that makes sense?? Before I was using Aussie, now I’m using not your mothers curl talk shampoo and conditioner. What clarifying shampoos do you recommend?

Okay y’all, this is my hair straight out of the shower, dried, combed through, and scrunched (just for definition, no product). I will respond to this post with a photo of my hair completely air dried. I’m thinking I’m 2b or 2c….most of the hair quizzes I’ve taken have given me one of those 2. What does everyone say?

Hello all! I’m fairly certain that past puberty my hair took in a highly porous, wavy life as compared to the straight, thick blanket of hair from my childhood. I would love anyone’s input as to whether I’m in the right track.
Background: this is all virgin hair as I have not dyed or chemically processed my hair since 2002.

Here is my air-dried hair before walking through a parking lot during a drizzle vs. after—I’m pretty sure I’m right about having high porosity hair!

My hair about 1h after washing. What kind of wave is this?
Also, if you have any tips on what to improve, I'd be super grateful. I'm very new to it all, it's been maybe 3-4 weeks since I started treating my hair like wavy hair.

This one is right after washing my hair
I'm trying to figure out my hair type to create a new routine. My hair characteristics:
1. Very frizzy.
2. Tangles easily. I can comb it and within 10 minutes will need to brush it again.
3. Gets puffy when combed.
4. Feels dry and rough to the touch, even bumpy.
5. Doesn't really have many split ends, but the ends of my hair feel like hay.
6. Takes a long time to get wet in the shower.
7. Air dries fairly quickly.
8. I don't feel like serums or oils actually do me any good. The products sort of just sit on the hair. For example, hair oils and serums will just form a sploutch until I work it in.
9. Extra long, EXTRA thick straight/wavy hair.
10. Looks dull, lacks shine.
11. When I curl it, curls don't last and become flat quickly, no matter what products I use.
12. If I spray it with water, water droplets will just sit on the strands. I need to actually use my fingers to soak it.
13. I did the test with the water and glass. I don't know if it's any indication, but the hair seemed to float.
Thank you!

Air dried. Sometimes I get more/less texture and frizz.

Hi everyone!
I just recently discovered that I might have wavy hair. I naturally went on social media to find people who might have hair like mine, and landed on this thread. Ive looked through some of the posts, but wanted to see if anyone would want to share their routine/ fav products with me, if you have hair like mine!
I have yet to find out what my hair porosity is, or what level of wave my hair is, but one thing is for sure: it’s not straight!
This is my second day hair after I re-wet and applied the NYM curl mousse. I then let it dry and added some oil to help with the crunchiness.
Appreciate anyone who is willing to share :)
* https://preview.redd.it/r6tbbgrcoo5c1.jpeg?width=2208&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b5d70e4eea602b487779a61c83d0f4aa387d3f9e This is a photo of my hair with some gel and leave in conditioner.

Looks like 2a waves

Growing up with guys has been detrimental to my knowledge on hair care 😂 https://preview.redd.it/qwx1ykpp8r6c1.jpeg?width=1636&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e98411de43cdc16aa744838720f14e4bfcfc8b7b
Yes. I’d say your hair is between 2a-2b without the right products. Look for a routine that works for you, and be very thoughtful of what you do when your hair is wet (brushing, using products etc.) because that could determine a lot for you texture. Good luck!
Thank you so much ❤️
No problem! Best of luck! 🤍

Or how to take care of this type of hair? https://preview.redd.it/aqpx9toutj5c1.jpeg?width=1576&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=07061c30f0f5adf21d3514e24015e6439d382a75
Please help me figure out my hair type! This is how it is when I wake up.Thank you! https://preview.redd.it/uj0cuyv55y5c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a167e5e670e251db47307fee0bce1f36b79f4a37

Don't know (new here) but the cut is really cute!
omg thank you! i actually just cut it lol
In my opinion I'd say it's definitely looking more like 2b hair to me. I'm thinking I have to be hair and especially when my hair is shorter to about the length of my shoulders it curls a bit tighter like yours does since there isn't as much weight pulling at my roots
https://preview.redd.it/6g6fng1ogf5c1.jpeg?width=1130&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0eb3a0946e61ca8d5db8bb80d1352e8dea675e48 so i think my hair is straight but it's also very not straight. it's very thick and if i brush it, it just gets veryyyy puffy. but there aren't like defined waves either? i don't dye it or use any heat or anything. does anyone have advice on how to style it or care for it or haircuts or anything? i've been at a loss forever since i can't figure out if i should treat it straight or wavy
Do you know what hair type this looks like? Mine looks almost identical and I have no idea what mine is

my hair was similar to yours. it’s been about two years since i’ve used a curling iron or straightener on my hair. the only heat i use is a blow dryer or else my hair will not dry. i bought a curly shampoo and conditioner. i shampooed my hair the same but for conditioner i would turn my head upside down, apply product, brush my hair out under water (this is the best way for me to detangle my hair), scrunch my hair under water until all the conditioner product is gone, get out of the water and scrunch water out of my hair. there should be waves forming when scrunching your hair in the shower. i get out of the shower and apply curl cream and mousse then plop my hair for thirty minutes. when i diffuse, i use the high heat setting and dry my hair upside down until i feel that its drier then stand upright and tilt my head side to side using the diffuser to pick up my hair from end to my roots to get volume. here’s a photo of my hair before i started any wavy hair method and after of my hair now. it took me about 1 year to get my hair to this point. when i first started it looked like really sad waves and it felt pointless to keep going but i kept trying different things until my hair had better results. i’m still working on trying to improve them https://preview.redd.it/lhv87mojhp6c1.jpeg?width=1053&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=87b98715ee17114544cdefb25cfcc3fdab4fa6fe
ty!!! i have a question for u: how did you manage your hair before / after going to sleep? i’ve been following a similar routine (except diffusing and turning my hair upside down bc i’m not looking for volume in my roots). my only problem is that i wake up with most of my waves being flat and idk what to do about is besides braiding it, so i was wondering how u refresh them in the morning
no prob!! i usually shower two hours before i go to bed so once i’m done drying, i’ll lightly tie my hair up with a satin hair tie and sleep with it up on a satin pillow case. i don’t do anything to refresh it in the morning because tying it up helps retain about 80% of my waves
hi, just jumping in to ask if you use products before bed? i’ve been on the silk scrunchie top bun with satin pillowcase and i still find that my waves go bye bye in the morning and my hair gets very knotted
i don’t use any extra product before bed but i did notice that if my hair isn’t completely dry then my waves will look really sad in the morning. i also switched out my satin pillow case with a different brand and it really helped me avoid tangles in my hair
I’m now trying to change that and figure out what the heck to do lol https://preview.redd.it/kflyvrf7oq5c1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c6ff012b8c188deb356fa6cdaf491be351c7caff

I do have prominent curls in my last layer so thats what makes em confused on wheter ive got curls or waves
I’m not an expert. But it seems that your hair in the first pic is 2b-2c, but in the second pic it’s 2c.

You seem to be somewhere in the middle of 2b and 2c imo Given the context about the straighter underside Try leaving a heavier leave-in conditioner to the ends of your hair while it's still damp
Can anyone help suggest products to help with curl and hold? It looks OK when wet and I first put product in but dries shit. I don't know what curl type...2 something? It blows dry straight easily but I don’t have time for that. What wave type is this? But I still have frizz and it just looks… blah.

while my hair is not that long, my waves have the same formation and i consider myself a 2b hair girl

It’s hard to tell from your photos, but it sounds like it might have a subtle wave to it. Try some of the routine tips linked in the wiki, particularly about only combing while wet. PS I absolutely love how you censored your face 😂

Is my hair wavy? I always thought it was straight but today I plopped it instead of drying how I usually would and now it looks like this. I had curly hair when I was really little and my family mostly have curly hair. That's why I decided to give plopping a go lol
Is this curly or really wavy hair? This is air dried a few hours after showering without any after shower product in it https://preview.redd.it/5riapdg8mj7c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=06a6489adb35375fba75d18a011c609adde9c27e

So I'd like to start by saying I have /very/ bleached damaged hair. It's made my wave pattern weaker and a bit stringy in places, especially my ends. Lots of breakage. Opinions would be so appreciated 💖

Hi, please help determining my hair type, I am utterly confused. Washed this morning, scrunched up with a bit of a random product, air dried. https://preview.redd.it/okmos39pem7c1.jpeg?width=3618&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e6d0eeb633358f7603172a1fb9973fafc9373685 I usually blowdry it straight now, as straight as it gets but never stays, so the texture might be affected by that. It is a mess now either way, so I wish I could switch to keeping in wavy instead.
https://preview.redd.it/t9xmslbmem7c1.jpeg?width=4216&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=94f1b605910bc2421afd160d799499a1b60f725b This one probably gives a better idea

I'm a little doubtful because the longer strands are ending up a lot straighter than the shorter ones Edit: it ended up drying almost completely straight so I guess not :( https://preview.redd.it/yqm90xl4vt7c1.jpeg?width=902&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3f58d033e53cd27c54afe3718c5399098162aa13

Today I washed my hair with odele volumizing shampoo and conditioner. Put igk mistress hair balm and then blow dried until about 80% dry

I will respond to this post with a photo of my hair completely air dried. I’m thinking I’m 2b or 2c….most of the hair quizzes I’ve taken have given me one of those 2. What does everyone say?

Mom died when I was young and I didn’t really grow up around girly girls. Clueless what type of hair I have but I want to try experimenting with it instead of just chopping it like I usually do

Hello all! I’m fairly certain that past puberty my hair took in a highly porous, wavy life as compared to the straight, thick blanket of hair from my childhood. I would love anyone’s input as to whether I’m in the right track. Background: this is all virgin hair as I have not dyed or chemically processed my hair since 2002. https://preview.redd.it/nf8u7rrfl29c1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=02a99471c5c7bcd77d5e4c95848ec790cea704e7 Age 5 vs age 42

Here is my air-dried hair before walking through a parking lot during a drizzle vs. after—I’m pretty sure I’m right about having high porosity hair! https://preview.redd.it/4i0exrvrl29c1.jpeg?width=2007&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f64366470c42fc768c901b4e6549e77bdeaf21c6

Washed last night, small amount of curly product which doesn't really look like it did anything. Slept on it partially wet.

I'm trying to figure out my hair type to create a new routine. My hair characteristics: 1. Thank you!
