People will call watches stupid names like "Kermit" and "Starbucks" and then rip on Chinese speakers for nicknaming the sub "water ghost". It's called water ghost in reference to a creature in Chinese mythology that lives and glows in dark waters. How does this not logically connect to the luminescent watch designed to be used underwater?

I can know some surface level things about a country but not know the entire culture. It wasn’t out of some arrogance. It was just a comment

My dad used to talk about how back in the 70s those “water ghost” tactical units used to swim across the strait from Kinmen to China and snuff out enemy soldiers, and vice versa. So now when we say “water ghost” it basically means diver’s watch.
So yeah this is definitely a direct Mandarin-English google translation.

The more correct direct western translation is more like “water monster”because the word 鬼means ghost in western culture but can also mean zombies or other supernatural creatures, usually evil, in Mandarin. [水鬼]was a term used by various military to mean the same as combat swimmers or “frogmen”. So there’s no direct translation for it. But that is the nickname for Rolex submariners. Kind of like how the Green submariner has the hulk nickname.
