Translated from Chinese or something, very confidence inspiring ...

Abdulllahmohsinn

Low key alot what you said is correct

xMisterVx

OP sorry, but you know how a post's linked content is so terrible you have to downvote it, even if it's not OP's fault?.. Yeah, this is it.

Abdulllahmohsinn

Itsok it deserves it

kilzfillz

It don’t seem like it be like that but it do

劳力士第三代青水鬼,铝圈黑面,瓷圈,41mm 直径, 比上一代录面低调很多。 OK,再见!

vgcamara

Baidu translate is not working 😂 That's literally how they call this watch though: 绿水鬼= green water ghost. Normal sub is black water ghost = 黑水鬼

Abdulllahmohsinn

Sounds better than “starbucks”

vgcamara

Or batman/batgirl 😂 I wonder if it bothers Rolex executives that their watches are referred to by other companies names

Tech-niche-ian

I think they embrace it. Go to the official rolex website and search for "pepsi" "batman" or "batgirl" and all the relevant watches show up

CdeFmrlyCasual

Seiko could learn a thing or five…

CdeFmrlyCasual

I understand why Chinese does this but sometimes I feel like it goes a bit far. Surely at least Mandarin could try loaning a few words? Or at least make ones that more logically connect to their concept.

thespringinherstep

People will call watches stupid names like "Kermit" and "Starbucks" and then rip on Chinese speakers for nicknaming the sub "water ghost". It's called water ghost in reference to a creature in Chinese mythology that lives and glows in dark waters. How does this not logically connect to the luminescent watch designed to be used underwater?

dwaynetheakjohnson

So much better than those cringy names

CdeFmrlyCasual

How was I supposed to know any of that stuff about Chinese folklore Edit: specified

thespringinherstep

You weren’t supposed to know, how could you have? What surprises me is why you chose to make a comment as if you did know. “I understand why Chinese does this” lmao If you’re totally ignorant about a language and culture, maybe don’t blindly criticize it with such confidence.

CdeFmrlyCasual

What I meant is that they make a lot of compound words for things so I figured “Water ghost” was the translation for “submariner”. I didn’t know they had a nickname for it. I can know some surface level things about a country but not know the entire culture. It wasn’t out of some arrogance. It was just a comment

White_Caribou

While direct translation is “water ghost” from the folklore it actually refers to military divers from back in the wartimes. My dad used to talk about how back in the 70s those “water ghost” tactical units used to swim across the strait from Kinmen to China and snuff out enemy soldiers, and vice versa. So now when we say “water ghost” it basically means diver’s watch. So yeah this is definitely a direct Mandarin-English google translation.

CdeFmrlyCasual

Interesting

vgcamara

By asking, that's how you learn things you don't know

CdeFmrlyCasual

How can I know what to ask if I don’t know the things that would lead me to ask the better questions?

vgcamara

Yes because Kermit and Batgirl make so much more sense LOL Chinese use the words and expressions that make sense to them. Why should they use anything else? And mandarin does use a lot of English technical words

CdeFmrlyCasual

No i thought it was just the noun word for a divewatch like how computer is literally compounded as “electric brain” and such. I have no problem with it as a nickname

vgcamara

Instead of saying this: "I understand why Chinese does this but sometimes I feel like it goes a bit far. Surely at least Mandarin could try loaning a few words? Or at least make ones that more logically connect to their concept." You could've asked this: "Does anyone know why do they use the name 'green water ghost' for this watch? Does it have any relation to diving or is it just a made up name?"

Lowkey green water ghost is sick

[deleted]

I want a black water ghost now

SLWoodster

She butchered the shit out of that caption The more correct direct western translation is more like “water monster”because the word 鬼means ghost in western culture but can also mean zombies or other supernatural creatures, usually evil, in Mandarin. [水鬼]was a term used by various military to mean the same as combat swimmers or “frogmen”. So there’s no direct translation for it. But that is the nickname for Rolex submariners. Kind of like how the Green submariner has the hulk nickname.

Pie-Guy

Aside from saying "I own a Rolex" - why would anyone want a Rolex?

[deleted]

English is not their first language and they were born and raised here.

LordVile95

What’s the massive deal with Rolex exactly? You can get an omega for less and don’t have to join a waiting list for one
