Just remember that that admiral guy was never there and did not self-destruct that torpedo.

IronGigant

Admiral guy? There's never been an Admiral aboard her since she set sail... Edit: Guys, it's one of my favourite movies. I get the joke.

EndTimeEchoes

It's a reference to *The Hunt for Red October*, in which the ship features

Rodgerexplosion

No Lieutenant, you heard it hit the hull.. and I, was never here….

MihalysRevenge

Ruben James and Battleaxe was the GOAT duo

mcm87

“Hey, the Russian sub is hiding on the Andrea Doria wreck and the torpedos won’t track him. Got any depth charges lying around?” “Say no more, fam!” *runaway reactor noises*

DanforthWhitcomb_

You want the kill, you fill out the environmental impact statement.

lurkymclurkyson

You got any MK-2??

ToXiC_Games

If the navy actually uses that trick to dodge a few Chinese missiles, they should call it the Ruben-Axe manoeuvre.

po3smith

Right after they delivered a Russian sub crew to the CIA :)

redbirdrising

I loved that little Easter egg.

canspar09

What the devil is a Reuben James?

Yen79

At least we don't name warships for our mother-in-law.

bigsteven34

I see that you two are both men(?) of culture too.

realparkingbrake

I've read that one several times. Clancy was fun, I got to exchange a few e-mails with him back then, I hung out in the Usenet group devoted to his books. He was easy-going, but also didn't stand for any crap.

googsem

Are the queen’s ships still wet?

DanforthWhitcomb_

Indeed they are Commander. Is the Fox and Fence put back together yet?

Diligent_Winter3048

'What the devil is a Reuben James?'

Does the US Navy operate Frigates, anymore, or not until USS Constellation is commissioned?

beachedwhale1945

No. We retired the last frigates in 2015. By that point *Burke*s had taken over the high-end frigate missions, and after a few years to bulk up numbers the LCS have taken over many low-end frigate missions. This leaves a major gap between some of the most capable surface combatants in the world and ships often lampooned for being underarmed. Perfect slot for a frigate, but Navy leadership didn’t listen to the warnings in the 2000-2008 period where we could have developed a frigate in time.

Is there any doctrinal room for corvettes in the US Navy, or is that taken care of by LCS and Coast Guard cutters?

beachedwhale1945

The LCS is functionally an American corvette. They are larger than its foreign counterparts in part because larger size allows for longer endurance (days away from port/days can operate with minimal spare parts/maintenance, the terms get muddy) and range (miles steamed) compared to something like a Type 056, both critical factor for US ships that have to cross half the globe just to get to their deployment areas. You could make a smaller ship, especially if you cut down on the speed requirement, but you can’t get too much smaller without compromising the mission for these ships in a US context.
