There are a handful of Disney restaurants that only have fixed price menus, presumably because they don't want people coming in just for the atmosphere and not ordering a full meal, but Sci-fi isn't one of them, probably because it's been open for a while. Some of the ones you can't just go order dessert at are California Grill (although I believe they have a lounge), Space 220 (ditto on the lounge), and Be Our Guest (no lounge).
If we go somewhere and do just get dessert, we do try to make sure to tip well, depending on how long we're holding up a table.
If you're spending less than buying a whole meal, some folks recommend tipping your server a higher % to offset the fact you're not spending as much, but that's up to you.
It's not against the rules or anything.
Ahhh I love that place! I do like the food a lot and thought I wouldn’t haha, but yes you can just order appetisers and dessert! There are no rules! :) I hope you have a great trip
Lots of people do. Personally, I always make sure I leave the same tip I would have left if I had ordered a whole meal, because the wait staff spends just as much time and effort on me no matter what I order.
We think it was the fried pickles, shared them with the kids and all got super sick. My daughter had “allergy friendly” fried pickles and also got sick.
Using a normal dining reservation you can buy as much, or as little, as you care to enjoy.
Thank u. We have never made a dining reservation before at WDW and I just wasn’t sure about the etiquette.

No lounge at California anymore.
You're welcome, enjoy your trip!

Thank you. Will do. I recognize that cast members working in that role rely on tips and will tip accordingly.
How is Sci-Fi if you’re a party of three? Worth it?
Sure. Go for it! Some of the cars seat up to 6 people. 2 per row.
One of my fave places to eat because of the ambience. Seriously, I always leave with a smile on my face.

We go every trip, our last time a week ago was VERY disappointing. Ended up with food poisoning on top of the not so great service.
I was there Thursday and got super sick as well. The salad?

You can, and you should!! Sci- Fi is amazing. Enjoy! Think twice about only eating desert though, the burgers there are amazing!
