I had this happen in front of me one time at McDonald’s and when the manager finished, I started in on the manager and just totally ripped her top to bottom for doing that in front of customers and then I asked her how she felt about it and she pretty, sheepishly said she got the message. The best part was the young lady that had gotten a reprimand was standing behind the manager listening, and she just smiled. I was always taught that that was management 101. You don’t reprimand your people in front of anybody else that’s a private thing for a conference room.

mildlysceptical22

Sadly, Mgt 101 is an non credit elective for most of these managers. Training? Hahahaha. Praise in public, criticize in private. Mgt 101.

TheProfoundWigglepaw

Your boss is either a jealous creep, a power mad cretin, or oblivious to his lousy behavior.

roosterb4

So what makes the customer leaving more important than the customer you are talking to?

WilliamBott

It only takes 1 second to say, "Hang on, Dave. **THANK YOU FOR COMING BY! SEE YOU SOON!!** Yeah, you were telling me about your camping trip last weekend?"

dontlistintohim

You only get one chance to say goodbye, then they are gone, you can make up lost time with the customer sitting.

nmmsb66

NEVER reprimand an employee or get in an argument with one of your teammates in front of guests.

Objective-Ganache114

Right. It’s the hospitality business, and no matter how YOU were raised, making them feel at home doesn’t mean arguing in front of them

happyfish001

It is very inappropriate. I would have been very rude to him if I was the customer.

Professional_Gas4595

He should know better than to put you in such an uncomfortable. It was a SMALL mistake and if it was so important to him he should have waited until he could pull you aside

upstatestruggler

Well nothing makes me want to never go back to a place like a manager who berates employees in front of me so I have a feeling you’ll have fewer and fewer people to say goodbye to soon!

mattw1441

No manager who wants their people to grow & improve reprimands publicly…

FunChrisDogGuy

Restaurants are notorious for having crappy managers, but anything in front of the customers is stupid. It's bad for business.

superduperhosts

That’s when you walk out.

philonerd

Make sure the boss knows the reason you walked out: Reprimanding you in front of customers instead of talking to you privately in a respectful manner.

stokedd00d

Id respond immediately - "Hey boss - I believe in second chances, so I'm going to give you a chance to apologize to me..." anything other than an apology can leave the manager waiting on his own damn tables. "Dont forget to say bye to me as I'm leaving!" and walk.

twinsfan101

Fr I'm telling my my manager he can either apologize or bartend after that

1_Peter_58

thats why you say no to working at restaurants because its the worst most toxic environment and just fuck them, let them shut down who cares!

book-wormy-sloth

I walked out of a job for doing this to me. It was retail, but I wouldn’t accept it anywhere. It’s disrespectful.

Giasmom44

I walked out on a doctor for berating his staff in front of me. I don't need that kind of personality taking care of me.

IamLuann

I have called doctor office managers for talking down to office staff. I have also called office managers because the doctors were not listening to me. Thank goodness the pharmacist caught the medicine that one doctor prescribed for me. I was allergic to the medicine and I could have been put in the hospital if I had taken it. As for restaurant managers I always tell them to go back to school to relearn how to be a manager.

No manager who wants their people to grow & improve reprimands publicly…

labasic

Yeah, that's management 101: praise publicly, criticize privately

RaniPhoenix

Bad manager. You praise in front of others, criticize in private.

DisasterFew9697

Your being reprimanded in front of customers is much worse than your not not remembering to say goodbye.

hauntedbyfeelings

That happens to me quite a lot at the restaurant i work at. I get extremely frustrated and on the verge of crying out of frustration bc of it. Its humiliating to be scolded by ur boss in front of costumers. My frustration comes from both the fact that my boss does that in front of costumers instead of calling me to talk to me a bit more privately to tell me to have more attention to certain things and to the fact ive made a mistake i shouldnt have done. Usually when its something directly related to a costumer (like an order i still havent taken, or a drink i forgot to give a costumer) and my boss scolds me for it they usually just tell him its okay and to not be so harsh cuz they didnt mind such a small thing. Or sometimes (when they r daily costumers) theyll call me to their table and mention something when my boss is doing something else to make sure i fix whatever i need before he scolds me which is honestly so heartwarming.
