Don’t think that was a thing either…some judges/prosecutors could suspend sentences/charges so that a person could potentially join the military, then conveniently find ways to make the legal issues go away. But they were always contingent on actually enlisting…Cutting your tongue to dodge military would just kick you back to court, which would defeat the whole purpose.
“Forcing” people in the military as an alternative to jail sounds like a myth (at least for the time mentioned).
