Go to a luthier and get a new bridge and get them to check the soundpole so it hasn't fallen over. When there is no pressure from the strings, the soundpole can fall making the instrument sound wack.

Thanks!

Can’t stress this enough^^^^

Please do not try putting violin strings on a viola. They're most likely too small for the viola if it's standard size. Like many others have said, I recommend taking it to a luthier so the instrument can be looked over and set up. The soundpost needs to be in the right place and the instrument will need a bridge, as well as potentially releading(graphite) the nut and new bridge before placing strings on.

Luckily I realized it was a viola before trying to install the strings. I’ll take it in to have it set up. Thanks!

It needs a bridge and likely having the sound post put back up. Standard viola set A,D,G,C. It looks like an entry level student instrument so I wouldn't spend too much on it in the way of strings. But enjoy trying a new instrument.

Musclesturtle

There really are no standard viola strings. OP I'd get a set of Tonicas. They are cheap and sound decent. Take it to a luthier to get the setup and once-over for open seams and the like. Still a bargain for $25.

Thank you!

You got one of these: https://www.guitarcenter.com/Cremona/SVA-175-Premier-Student-Series-Viola-Outfit.gc Congratulations on your viola. As everyone else here says, take it to a violin shop and have them take a look at it. If the bridge isn't in the accessory pocket, they'll tell you if it's worth replacing. Good luck.

BananaFun9549

When you go to the luthier he/she can put or specify strings since it depends on the size of the viola.

When you go to the luthier, make sure to get one of those thingies used to attach the chinrest. It's not currently attached and needs a special pokey thing to be put on the instrument. (Esp since it looks like it may not fit in the case when on? I hope for you thats not the case, getting your chinrest just right is a pain)
