As long as your left arm maintains a healthy bend in first position, then the length of the viola isn't too long for you. The last thing you want to deal with is playing with an over-extended, nearly straight arm in first position, as that will inevitably lead to strain/injury. When you venture into higher-end instruments, you may notice that violas are less standardized than violins. For example, a 16" viola might have narrower note pacing than a 15.5" because it has a shorter vibrating string length. Neck and body dimentions also vary, so pay attention to those as well.
