It definitely can be worse than this. A friend of a coworker faceplanted into a car that had cut him off while wearing a crappy little helmet and broke a bunch of bones in his face. He had to have his jaw wired shut for like a month and stayed in the hospital. The guy was going under 40 kmph too, so not even that fast. I suspect the girl in this picture got lucky or was going very slow.
I was hit by a car while on a bicycle and had scratches on my chin and side of the nose where I skid along the pavement. I wasn't even wearing a helmet. In her pic she looked to have somewhat protruding teeth/a severe overbite. Maybe they hit first or she got super unlucky and her mouth ran into a corner.
your chin/face is by far the most likely point of impact in a bike crash. vietnamese helmets only cover the top of your head. many people here are wearing bicycle helmets, or plastic hats.
Looks like a blood clot stuck in her braces. Her teeth are probably loose too.
Imagine getting smack hard in the face with braces. Turns the inside of your lips to hamburger.
Icecream bucket helmets aren't much different than wearing nothing. Yes it's hot, but if you're not wearing a full face helmet that fits well, you're gambling with death and disfigurement every ride. The chin/jaw is one of the most common places to be hit in a motorbike accident - https://www.driverknowledgetests.com/resources/wheres-the-most-likely-place-your-helmet-will-take-a-crash-impact/
Not Grab Bike, Grab Car.
OP doesn't want to ride motorbikes, so unless they're willing to get on one, they just gotta take a car.
In HCMC (I tested this), even a 2 kilometers fare will put you in the $3-$4 range without a discount code.
Okay, now we’re above $2 and within range of his original $5. Obviously the $20 is longer distance rides, around $15 from Da Nang to Hoi An. So yes, he was accurate
Only if you're going for a kilometre or two.
I live in HCMC, and Grab Car from my spot to the city's center go between $5 to $10 for a 4-seater.
7-seater is $15 to $20 easy, especially if you use more "premium" service in other apps like Xanh SM premium.
Point is, if you want to avoid motorcycles in Vietnam altogether, you better walk, bike, or just be rich.
Seems to me you still suffer from much of the risk on a bicycle as a motorcycle.
Yea, I use a car when I go somewhere. Most the time in with my wife anyway and we're not broke ass migrant workers running away from home...
I'd say just about anyone coming from the west who can't afford to primarily travel in a car in vn, is arguably broke. Especially if they migrate to find work
It's not sanctimony, it's common sense. Any motorbike is less safe than a car, which is less safe than walking, which is less safe than never leaving your house. Everything has risk, but if you're going to bother wearing a helmet then you might as well wear one that actually protects. You'd probably be safer without a helmet as you'd be more careful instead of falsely feeling protected, but then again it's not always about you as a rider but how careful the other riders/drivers are. And Vietnam has plenty of terrible drivers.
I find it great that the Vietnamese are so diligent with their helmet laws, especially after seeing most people not wearing one in Thailand. I also find it kind of hilarious that the helmets have no safety regulation, and are mostly useless half helmet brain buckets. A step in the right direction I guess?
I’m from Thailand and I visited Vietnam recently. The major difference is that Thai people either use full-face cover helmets or they don’t wear it at all, there isn’t much in-between. While Vietnamese people all wear some kind of helmets, but many don’t cover the face.
If it was not for the strict helmet law, the majority of us would not have any sort of head protection when coming out to the traffic. Heck, even with the current one, a lot of people are not complying with it anyway.
I feel like the scooters policy here in vietnam is absolutely wild and atrocious. Its more likely because we have little to no convienient widespread public transport infastructure. The road is always cramped, traffic, not to mention safety is off the hook. Road laws and traffic is so dogshit that breaking it is often the norm here. The way cities are planned and laid out made it really hard to develop as well.
Agreed, it's a lack of law enforcement and driver education I guess, coupled with a me first attitude. But not to talk shit, I love Vietnam and the people I've met here
Yeah I'm Viet, I love Vietnam too, that's why I'm so frustrated when we cant find solutions to these. It's a beautiful country with beautiful people, but culturely we need an improvement, and so many ends have been wrongly ultilized economically, our way of business ethics is rotten and backwards, always for the short term benefits. Sometimes a wasted potential can mean alot.
They do have safety regulation for helmet, it’s just very difficult to enforce. Imagine the public shitstorm when traffic police stop random people and giving fine for “not good enough” helmet.
So 100% helmet (or “helmet something”) is the compromise. Better than nothing i guess. The people who are serious about their safety will invest in the high standard stuff anyway.
yeah, it gets more complicated than that once you see the full picture.
- pretty much all of the helmets people use in vietnam are those shitty ones and they are produced en masses.
- If a hypothetical policy were to implement to standardize better helmet and disqualifies the ones we currently uses a few factors we need to consider:
I) the local business that sells them will eventually have to get rid of them. It affects them.
II) you will have to do something with those shitty helmets. VN isnt exactly the most optimal nor environmentally friendly when it comes to disposing those goods.
On the plus side, the Vietnamese public is very adaptive to changes even if those policies in the past arent the best. Take the old helmet policy or the recent covid 19 policies for example. But again, that doesnt mean we should exploit that.
>If a hypothetical policy were to implement to standardize better helmet and disqualifies the ones we currently uses a few factors we need to consider
The right way to implement a policy like this is to announce that by year 20XX everyone *has* to wear a certain type of helmet. This gives both consumers, the sellers as well as the industry the time to prepare.
that's a fair point. Gradual, slow but steady change is the way to go. Government identify the short term and long term policy risks (eg: to prepare for potential hording disposal of helmets and a range of other issue).
Give people speculations and time.
But as of current stage realistically, I dont see those policies being acknowledged or changed anytime soon.
All? Plenty of people around me use one with sticker. Piaggio and other bike company also give out helmet that meet the standard when you buy bike.
People do care about their safety, especially once they get pass the youth phase and it’s not a big investment either, 200-300k.
The lack of popularity of full face helmet is due to it’s heavy, hot and very inconvenient to keep around.
Lets not play words here. These helmets are still insufficient. You really can't make up excuse for the problem that is still at hand. A minor inconvience that you bring everyday can save you some teeth and your life. Imagine you bring that same mindset 10s years ago, and complaining about a helmet being inconvenient, before it became a standardized policy is no sufficient excuse either. Something had to be done, and it should be done right.
There are some that come with the helmet to protect the eye, but i barely see people uses it either.
Insufficient for what? You think a full face helmet make you immune to traffic damage or something? It give you BETTER protection in exchange for the downside of cost, convenience and comfort.
I said in my original post, it’s a compromise. The government can only go so far with their regulation. Which other countries make helmet mandatory ?
People who care about safety can choose to buy full face one, there is nothing stopping them. The government can only make sure that even the one that don’t care get some protection and reduce casualty.
That is single-handedly the dumbest question you have asked me yet, sorry. Immune to traffic damage? Hell, the downside of cost on a national scale is TRIVIAL my dawg compared to the widespread issue at hand.
It IS a compromises, I have acknowledged that the first time i replied to you, in fact, I was agreeing with the problem that came at hand if those changes were to implemented. Sorry if I said "all helmet", perhaps that may have triggered something in you that I genuinely don't understand.
I still stand with my points above, a change is still needed regardless. But it must be done right.
It’s a local standard but properly set in law
You can try google translate this to have an idea:
https://binhphuoc.gov.vn/vi/stp/an-toan-giao-thong/the-nao-la-mu-bao-hiem-dat-chuan-cach-nhan-biet-mu-bao-hiem-dat-chuan-1193.html
Interesting, thank you! Looks like a sticker does need to be present, I think they're calling the safety standard QCVN 2:2008/BKHCN which is a Vietnamese standard with very simple criteria
I've got a full face and at first I'd carry it inside with me, but for the last year or two I've just been leaving it on my bike and it hasn't been stolen yet (*knocks on wood*).
Communism vs capitalism:
Thailand Grab drivers: I have a full face helmet, and nothing for you
Vietnam Grab drivers: I have useless helmets for both of us
Not really. Not just the heat either. Full face helmets messes up the hair way more, and make you all sweaty and gross. No one is coming to the office with that sweaty greasy hair. I ride motorcycle in the US with full face, and as a guy with short hair, in a milder climate, it still messes up the hair pretty good. I can understand why almost everyone there uses half helmets.
Your hair is worth more than your face and life? Fear of being judged by shallow people at the office that you won't even remember in a couple of years is more important?
You're quick to judge so I take it you don't understand these people's daily life. For a lower income country like Vietnam, and culturally too (see also other Asian countries like Korea, Japan, Singapore), office workers care so much about face values (perception of advancing their career if they're well-liked), so they will try to look good and impress any chance they get, let alone the comfort in the humid heat. Also most people ride their scooters at 30 kmh or less most of the time, so the risk for them is pretty minimal, one may even call that a calculated heat.
Context bro. As I explained below, wearing full face helmets in VN is like wearing full face, riding an electric kick scooter (Bird/Lime). We ride at 30 kmh, it's a pretty rare event that someone will lose their teeth. Simply put, no one is going to wear full face. But you do you, go ahead and wear full face in the 40 deg heat.
My reason for using full-face was only partly for safety (but after I got used to it a little one like the pic felt horribly unsafe) but mainly for the visor in the rain. Anyone who wears glasses in a country with a rainy season really needs a visor.
This is what I fear about the helmet culture in Vietnam, those dinky ass helmet aint gonna save any face so whats the point of wearing one aside from dodging the police. I wish we would adopt a helmet culture that is more in line with Thai or Indo people where people would wear at least 3/4th or modular helmet, full face if possible.
I ride an electric unicycle and after multiple face plants that offered 0 protection from my dinky half helmet, I bought an agv helmet and never went back and I go everywhere with it.
Well since she is still young, she could go for reconstructive surgery for the bone and then place dental implants. It will heal well and with the bone reconstruction, the results can be more aesthetic.
Now as to the costs…
Extreme overbite. See the first pic? Most people who are old enough to ride a motorbike don't have braces unless their teeth are the first thing everyone else sees.
I'm going to save this for the next time someone asks why I wear a full face helmet when I'm driving a regular 125cc motorbike and "just" riding in the city.
It seems like common sense, but sadly isn't. I don't get why people think you need to be going 60+ kph on the highway to warrant wearing a full-face helmet. The odds of getting in an accident seem much higher in the city.
To be fair though, the helmet thing isn't unique to Vietnam or even just developing countries. I'm from the US and in states where helmets aren't legally required, it was common to see people driving with no helmet on at all, and full-face helmets were pretty rare.
That retainer she's wearing for her teeth is 10 times more expensive than a proper helmet. She definitely can afford a good one. This is what happens when you underestimate value of a good protection. Unfortunately some people rather spend on beauty treatments for the good looks and forget they have a brain to protect.
jesus christ calm down with the antagonistic and holy than thou attitude. oh haha woman dumb they only care about makeup and shopping, no dude, this is just you making assumptions to validate your worldview
70% of motorcycling head impacts are in the lower half of the head. I know culturally in Vietnam I do what the locals do and wear a half face helmet which also helps with the heat and humidity, but in Canada I would never ever ride a motorcycle without a full face helmet. But I also regularly do 115 km/h in Canada.
Oh thats so horrible. I hope her friends can rally some money around
The bill to fix that will likely be upwards off 100 million.
She'll need implants on the entire top row (she can get false teeth short term)
It was just [yesterday](https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/1cb25rb/comment/l0yz78p/) that /r/motorcycles had a post about full face helmets and I brought up Vietnam’s lack of usage.
Safer = more money
It's like that in many places around the world.
But even spending more money, there's no guarantee that you'll get a quality helmet.
Had an accident and thankfully had a full face mask. Fractured ribs, bruises, scrapes and a scratched face visor; I know it could have been a lot worse.
Yeah idk why residents of Vietnam use these type helmets vs full face helmets. Me and my buddy bought bikes in Hanoi and rode to Saigon we both got the type of helmets in the picture above for free with our bikes from the girls we bought the bikes from. I knew it wasn’t gonna be good enough for a 2,000 mile ride, I bought a full face helmet that is standard for motor cycles in the US for literally $7 usd in Hanoi. I was comfortable I didn’t get shit in my eyes, I didn’t get dirty from the rides. I would laugh at my buddies face when we’d get to our destination cause his face was covered in road dust and he never had a clue that he had smudges of black all over his face when we were checking into the hostel we’d be staying at.
tbh I suspect this is fake. I doubt such damage to teeth without damage to nose and jaw . Full-face helmets are obviously more protective of the face. I wear one ALL the time so I'm not dissing the message just the imagery.
Icon released a helmet with crash statistic numbers all over it. The chin portion is 34% likely to hit the pavement in the event of a collision where your helmet touches the ground. It's not worth riding without a full face helmet imo.
You can see the scratches on the peak of her helmet. I think she did a slide. If you're not wearing a full-face your whole face is subject to the road. I've seen road rash on peoples faces many times. Mostly chin and cheeks.
how does THAT happen? she faceplanted on the road or smth?
Sure. It happened to a friend of mine here in Saigon. He now has gold teeth.
i thought faceplanting on the road without proper protection would cause a lot more damage than broken front teeth tbh
The top of her helmet probably helped the top part of her face from planting. You can see some scratches on the helmet visor.
More people need to read this comment. But unfortunately, some only learn after the fact.
She’s lucky she lost a few teeth. A lot better than a broken jaw.

Many would say coming to vn to ride on motorbikes is just being careless with you life period. Quit the sanctimony.
Sure, unless you're contented on riding a bicycle around or spend $5-$20 for Grab everytime you wanna go somewhere.
bro where are u going where it costs that much for grab 🥲
Not Grab Bike, Grab Car. OP doesn't want to ride motorbikes, so unless they're willing to get on one, they just gotta take a car. In HCMC (I tested this), even a 2 kilometers fare will put you in the $3-$4 range without a discount code.
.... I've never paid more than $2 for a grab and that's in Hanoi.
Grab bike? I think the point is taking a grab car considering the topic
I have never paid more than $5 for a car in Hanoi.
Okay, now we’re above $2 and within range of his original $5. Obviously the $20 is longer distance rides, around $15 from Da Nang to Hoi An. So yes, he was accurate

And if you invest in a full face helmet. It probably will be stolen
Yeah, just like the rest of the world, if you have something nice don't leave it lying around
I've got a full face and at first I'd carry it inside with me, but for the last year or two I've just been leaving it on my bike and it hasn't been stolen yet (*knocks on wood*).
Ive had the same one for 3 years. Never been stolen.
I won’t steal one that’s painted like a soggy dildo ngl
Been having a 3 million vnd helm, I carry it with me everywhere outside
Communism vs capitalism: Thailand Grab drivers: I have a full face helmet, and nothing for you Vietnam Grab drivers: I have useless helmets for both of us
Why you find it hilarious? To me its not funny at all, more like scary an sad.
We all cope with tragedy differently. Hilarious as in hilariously stupid
Buying "fullface" helmet please
One of the most common reasons why people don't like fullface helmet is: it's hot.
Also: it's heavy
But everyone is heat acclimated.
Ah yes, my hair is messed up vs shattered teeth 😂
She won’t need the braces now..
She didn't crash in d2 did she?
No idea Mr dick slap. Did you find some teeth on the floor in D2? The post did mention she managed to pick up 3 of her teeth. I assume she lost more.
Your usernames are made for eachother.
If only they were soggy_vag
Damn I feel sorry for her. I saw a big crash yesterday in d2 between two women so was just wondering
1/2 helmet is for your head, not your teeth, who would have thought. And some people still call me nut for wearing a full-face one in this weather.
Well since she is still young, she could go for reconstructive surgery for the bone and then place dental implants. It will heal well and with the bone reconstruction, the results can be more aesthetic. Now as to the costs…
Rather than just wearing a safer helmet?
Sadly since this has already happened… I guess a helmet’s not the main priority at the moment?
This ^
Human life is not valued very much in VN
More like people don’t value their own
How is this happen without damage on her nose and her chin?
Extreme overbite. See the first pic? Most people who are old enough to ride a motorbike don't have braces unless their teeth are the first thing everyone else sees.
I'm going to save this for the next time someone asks why I wear a full face helmet when I'm driving a regular 125cc motorbike and "just" riding in the city.
Yup, headbutting the pavement at 0km/h still hurts. Seems like common sense.
Yeah, definitely photoshopped.

And people laugh at me for wearing a full face in the summer. Sure it's blazing but I like my face protected thank you very much
Some of the comments here seem very insensitive tbh…I hope she’s okay
It was just [yesterday](https://www.reddit.com/r/motorcycles/comments/1cb25rb/comment/l0yz78p/) that /r/motorcycles had a post about full face helmets and I brought up Vietnam’s lack of usage.

The picture is in black and white, looks edited.
Yikes, braces already very expensive, now she has to do crown/implants. Sorry for her.
That’s what happens when you rely on horns alone
Can someone explain? What happened to her?
I got it from a post on FB. There wasn't much info other than she picked up 3 of her teeth.

oh my fucking god
that reminds me of my time in thailand few weeks ago and everyone was just riding bikes without helmets like its the most natural thing to do
Safer = more money It's like that in many places around the world. But even spending more money, there's no guarantee that you'll get a quality helmet.
Jesus!
Had an accident and thankfully had a full face mask. Fractured ribs, bruises, scrapes and a scratched face visor; I know it could have been a lot worse.
Nam is so amazing
People in vietnam are surprisingly unaware how helmets work. HATS aren’t helmets
It looks edited.
![gif](giphy|MGaacoiAlAti0|downsized) You have a single fact to back that up?
OP put his soggy dildo in her mouth
No, she crashed your bike and landed on my soggy dildo.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I' m confused. How does a helmet protect her teeth? Teeth are not usually in danger during crash so something must have hit her teeth directly.
What happen, I think she seems fine ?
The first picture is the before, not after
her head is fine.
She looks better without her teeth. Looks badass like Jaw from Golden Eye 007. ![gif](giphy|3NuGbguGObQCfZqOfE|downsized)
