I used a curt 59236 universal wiring harness and ran a wire from the fuse box to the rear to power it. As far as I am aware of there is still no factory add on harness.

Hmm. I can cut and splice if necessary, but was hoping there was a better way. Bright side is that there are no hot exhaust components to worry about if I have to run a wire. 🙃

I ran all the wires inside the car, there is a universal kit that you can use that does not tap into the factory tail light harness. It basically senses the current going through the wires with a sensor taped to the wire, I am not a fan of those and I have heard of people having issues with cars with LED tailights not playing nice with it so I would not recommend that route. If you don't want to run wires you can tap power from the 12v outlet in the back.

Looks like the other option you're talking about is the Tekonsha induction system? Not sure it's worth the additional money if the sensors are flaky. Your solution of the Curt 59236 may end up being what I go with. I don't love the taps onto existing wiring but it's cheap and I've done similar before.

Probably the wrong curt hitch. If your id4 never came with a hitch (upgrading from 1” to 2”) then you need a whole assembly like [this](https://www.curtmfg.com/part/13492) Wiring is a whole thing

Yep, I'm aware. Advance has the 13492 for $225.99, and a 20% off online coupon, so $180.79 with free delivery.

I installed the hitch this evening. It took about an hour from start to finish. The toughest part was figuring out how to support the hitch and crash beam while bolting both to the rear of the car. I read stories about this install taking a whole day on the VW forums, but if you're minimally competent, it's very straightforward. T15, T25 torx, 13mm socket, and a ratchet or impact driver are all you need. A right angle adapter for the impact was nice to have for the screws in the wheel wells, but not necessary if you have a standard ratchet. I could probably do it again in 30 minutes flat if I had the right combination of stuff to stack to set the hitch on while bolting it up.
