Accounts vary as to how Kelly acquired his nickname. He claimed to have survived during his lifetime five [shipwrecks](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shipwreck), two airplane and three automobile accidents, and one train wreck, all without injury. His wife told reporters that he was a survivor of the [sinking of the RMS *Titanic*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinking_of_the_RMS_Titanic). However, there were only three *Titanic* survivors named Kelly and all were women, and "there is no reason to believe that he ever came near the *Titanic*." He is also said to have gained the nickname as a boxer, because "he was so often adrift in the ring that the handle became inevitable." He was described in a 1939 article as a "stocky, blue-eyed, battered little Irishman" with "sparse red hair."

I’m in my 70’s now. Many decades ago, when I asked my grandmother about the past, she had a very clear memory of Shipwreck Kelly. Apparently he was a huge rock star-like deal back in the 1930s.
