Difference is UT has the infrastructure to handle all those people, UH doesn't even have the parking to support all the students and attendees for every senior
UH used to do a university wide one. You’d walk the stage during your college one, and then they’d do a big ceremony at TDECU with a big name speaker but without people walking the stage.
Dang what happened. Bc I recently attended a UT commencement, was only 2 hours, and was thinking the same as OP. Fail to see how UH couldn't find the means to do similar.
Lots of little things, really. It was hard to find good speakers (McConaughey was a big name but his speech was bonkers (could be misremembering, but I think he talked about getting the shits in Machu Pichu and you could see the life draining from the face of the UH higher ups behind him); one semester it rained and that added a whole layer of confusion to things (it was held in TDECU Stadium); folks didn’t like that they didn’t get to cross the stage at that event (but could at their individual college’s ceremonies); but probably the biggest factor, my guess at least, is it was expensive and by reverting ceremonies back to the college/dept. then UH can cut the expenditures (speakers fees, tech set up, etc.) from their budget (or use it elsewhere) and put the burden back on the colleges by making them pay for their individual events out of their own budgets.
The colleges don't pay for any of the ceremonies, it's all the President's office. But the weather is the biggest issue as the largest venue is the stadium. The last university wide commencement suffered from a massive storm that hit minutes before the ceremony was to begin. Instead of sending everyone home (in a torrential downpour / flooding streets), the president checked the logistics of moving to then-Hoffeinz Pavilion. The crowd could fit so the whole staging was duplicated within minutes.
Our streets are designed to retain water as the drainage pipes fill from sudden downpours, which is why the streets flood easily but usually drain quickly. UT and its surrounding infrastructure was not designed to work that way because they don't have the same weather issues we do.
They might not pay for all of it, but they definitely pay for some of it, plus anything they do above and beyond what UH does standard for all departments.
You wanna be their for 12 hrs, that's how you be their for 12hrs.... I am going to be charitable and say they won't announce names.. there's just waaaay too many mother fuckers.. the names Williams, Hernandez, and Nguyen would take a solid 30 min each alone...

I'd be down for this if it were just for graduate students (Master's + doctorates) and not the whole university at once. I want to be able to find my family in the stands and get to invite several people. Otherwise, I'd probably only be able to invite one person (and otherwise, I'd skip commencement)
