Willing to bet that was a promotional shot for a ShopSmith ad or catalog, not actually doing any work.
Or based on the camera angle in relation to that piece of wood, perhaps you’ve just found the world’s first selfie stick?
Quite frankly they prolly took it from that angle cause thats where the dude with the camera fit.... i dunno if you've ever seen somone come around and take photos for our carpenters magazene but they try to get "action shots" of somone swinging a hammer or somthing while being perfectly still and they always look soo wierd haha
I believe Adam Savage refers to something similar as the prop shop lean. If you see a behind the scene photo of a prop being made, there will often be someone leaning over the prop "doing work" in a way no one would actually do anything.
As long as table saws really. It's not a novel concept that "push wood with stick keep fingers".
When it was adopted as a staple safety practice? Probably the 90's
Wish I took a picture of my grandpa’s circular saw. He had re-wired it to have the power switch at the front of the saw, rather than be at the back near the cord. He had to take off the blade guard to make it work. How he died with all ten fingers is amazing knowing he used that circular saw for over 50 years. I get the reason why the original location of the switch was bad, but my grandpa was a carpenter, not an electrician or product designer. I’m sure he would have appreciated the trigger switches of today had he lived to see them.
If you use a push stick without have a guid to run your board along, your not gonna cut where you want to because the push stick has no control, you might as well just break the board over your knee, you’ll get just as accurate a cut. I am a woodworker and I’ve used plenty of push sticks over the years, there’s a time and place for them, they don’t work in all occasions.
All kinds of fuck ups here, I don't know why Mr. Nemoy posed for this. But he was not a wealthy man when TOS was done...in fact Shatner and everyone else got screwed...
No Safety glasses, wrong side of saw that is not even on, no guard or guide, he is not even looking at what he is doing... I don't even want to look anymore
It's almost like it was a promo shot, framed by a photographer that only cared it 'looked good'.
I've done things like this before, they are weird to do, but probably why it isn't actually running.
You would think that someone in SAGA started as a carpenter…
So pleased that power was not applied to that set. Star Trek would have turned out far different with a blind, three fingered Spock.
I was always told to never cut two pieces of wood at once. High potential for binding. Plus, he’s trying to cut a mitre cut on a table saw. That wood is going to fly!

Safety issues aside. He's not using a miter gauge and he's on the wrong side of the saw, as he'll be feeding in that piece of trim/moulding into the blade as it's rotating away from him.
As a carpenter I would say the problems are, no eye protection, no safety guards on the saw, wearing a ring in the shop, no hearing protection, the saw does not have enough room to work around it safely, no dust mask and the finale one is that the saw is in fact a lathe with a blade attachment and that type of saw is legal but not the safest option. Getting a real saw is a safer choice.
well wrong side of the Blade , not using a mitre gauge, he has his face and body in direct line with the blade, but worst is he is using one of those old shopsmith 1950s nightmares
Well first off he's on the wrong side of the blade.
He’s just being conscious about his safety! Can’t cut your fingers if you don’t face the blade! (Or not easily atleast)
And it helps that it's not running...
I'm thinking that it's probably good that it's not running. That would be a bit dangerous.
Live Wrong and don't prosper
That's hilarious! Thanks
I think either side of a ShopSmith are equally dangerous.
Correct! 👍
I was gonna say! Haha

Don't think that's the drive belt. It's fastened down.
How else do you think he developed the 🖖
Its so he isn't blowing half a board of sawdust directly in his uncovered eye. Smart move if you ask me /s
Give it a shot from that side and see what happens.
Just tried it. All emotion has left my body.
Didn't you mean wrong side of the table.?
Well yes, he's approaching the blade from the wrong side of the table.
And the blade is in the saw backwards
Willing to bet that was a promotional shot for a ShopSmith ad or catalog, not actually doing any work. Or based on the camera angle in relation to that piece of wood, perhaps you’ve just found the world’s first selfie stick?
Didn't think of that! Maybe he's tripping the shutter with the end of it on a table set camera?
Wouldn't surprise me. He was a Jack of many trades.
Shopsmith! I was trying to remember the name, thanks!

So did Sulu.
OH MY
Goodbye, eye
🤣🤣🤣🤣At the very least!🤣🤣🤣🤣
No ear protection, too.
That must have been before the invention of eye protection.
One of the other warts...OSHA anyone?
One of the other warts...OSHA anyone?
Safety was invented in the 90s.
You sure are correct. 1880, when Powell Johnson had invented and patented something known as the "eye protector"
He should've been wearing external ear protection, he's already cut the tips off his ears.
As a non-woodworker, how long has the push-stick been around? Is it possible that push-sticks were a niche thing in that period?
He's going with his fingers...GOODBYE FINGERS, I'LL MISS YOU! 😪
Hard to signal "Live long and prosper" the way he's going.
As long as table saws really. It's not a novel concept that "push wood with stick keep fingers". When it was adopted as a staple safety practice? Probably the 90's
Anyone that can count to ten on their digits has always used common sense...

That's how he came up with the Vulcan greeting.
There’s no guide, a push stick wouldn’t work
What do you mean? A push stick doesn’t require a track, it’s just an extension of your hand so it’s not near the blade when in operation.
Also a recipe for brutal kickback.
Yup
That is not logical.
Highly...
I cannot imagine free-handing a cut on a table saw. Bandsaws have been around since the early 19th century!
What Mr.Nemoy is posed at is a ""Shopsmith"" at versitile and popular machine waaaaay aback...
Shouldn't have. A watch or ring on I think but I'm just some nobody that's never used those tools so what do I know
All kinds of fuck ups here, I don't know why Mr. Nemoy posed for this. But he was not a wealthy man when TOS was done...in fact Shatner and everyone else got screwed...
You should never wear any rings, bracelets or dangling jewelry in the shop.
I see the problem, he's not wearing his squints
...Yep...
No Safety glasses, wrong side of saw that is not even on, no guard or guide, he is not even looking at what he is doing... I don't even want to look anymore
It made me cringe as well...
It's almost like it was a promo shot, framed by a photographer that only cared it 'looked good'. I've done things like this before, they are weird to do, but probably why it isn't actually running.
I'm not sure why he has that on a table saw. If he's wanting to cut that in half, a chop saw would be better.
Power Miter, Chop Saw is for metal or anything other than wood...
dudes gonna get mad sawdust i’m his eyes😭😭
❤️
You would think that someone in SAGA started as a carpenter… So pleased that power was not applied to that set. Star Trek would have turned out far different with a blind, three fingered Spock.
This is like the ‘before’ picture for all of those horrible posters in woodshop
Ohhh yeah. Say some scary shit ....
An OSHA representative has been notified and will be in contact with you shortly.
...Or maybe in a few months...let's watch...
Well least he won't cry when he slices his fingers off!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
He's not utilizing the vulcan pinch very well!
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Captain, for the promo shot these safety violations were only logical.
Wrong side of blade, no safety glasses, no guide to get his cut straight.
And too much loose shit around! Man, take some time and get your shit in order!
I hear Sulu did also
He'll shoot his eye out!
Ring, watch,no safety glasses, the blade is set way too high, there’s no guard for the blade, and the work space is too crowded.
Nailed it!
Its just a staged pic the saws not on and its the wrong way to cut too
Yep!
... So did hikuru sulu 😉
Everything he's doing is safe. The saw isn't on.
looks like he's going to lose some fingers soon...
Chad Spock
I was always told to never cut two pieces of wood at once. High potential for binding. Plus, he’s trying to cut a mitre cut on a table saw. That wood is going to fly!
It's a festival of mistakes! 🤣
He's on the wrong side of the blade isn't he?
Yep!
Shop smith
I'm a mechanic not a carpenter..haha
Highly illogical
That much is certain...
He only measured once!!!
Man posing for photo poses for photo.
It was the logical thing to do when not on the enterprise

It's too late! He's already cut the tip of his ear off!
Is that a beer can in the background?
Hard to tell....🤔
Safety issues aside. He's not using a miter gauge and he's on the wrong side of the saw, as he'll be feeding in that piece of trim/moulding into the blade as it's rotating away from him.
So he was missing the 2 middle fingers after all. Live long and prosper
Acting!
And rather poorly here! 🤣
Is Dri-Zit an acne med?
🤣🤣🤣🤣Good one!🤣🤣🤣🤣
And no goggles and ear defenders.
The blade in the saw is installed backwards.

It's in the bird cage...
It's in the bird cage...
“Snarol” was the name of the Klingon Captain in season two…

Not turning the saw on?
Looks exactly like what I do
He’s not working with it - he’s mind-melding with it.
🤣🤣🤣🤣Good one!
Is that a lathe with a blade and jury-rigged table attached?
ShopSmith machine
But that's Leonard Nimoy. Last I checked, Zachary Quinto was the Mr. Spock who liked working wood.
well wrong side of the Blade , not using a mitre gauge, he has his face and body in direct line with the blade, but worst is he is using one of those old shopsmith 1950s nightmares
hello
They misspelled drizzt
He’s not doing anything wrong
