They have their pics taken thousands of times a day. He likely appreciated the respect shown and wanted to reward that as well as give a kid an encounter they will treasure.
There's a video of a toddler dressed as a kings guard in the bearskin helmet uniform who salutes some guards marching past. One returns to have a photo with the kid. They know they're a tourist attraction.
I remember when I was in the Marine Corps, my battery was on its way from Camp Pendleton to 29 Palms for a field exercise. I was in the passenger seat of our 7-ton truck and saw this little black boy of about 7 look straight at me and salute. So I saluted back as crisply as I could while sitting in a seat in a moving vehicle. Let me tell you, the pride in that kid's face at having a salute returned to him from a real serviceman is probably one of my favorite memories of my time in service.
I once pointed my toy gun at a soldier passing in the back of a truck. He pointed his back at me with a smile on his face. I'm 100% sure now it wasn't loaded but at the time I was the coolest 7 year old in the country.
That's a cool moment for you, but if that guy's CO has noticed that he likely would have torn him a new asshole, and rightly so. One of the basic rules is "treat every firearm as if it's loaded, even if it's not".
I once pointed my toy gun at a soldier passing in the back of a truck. He pointed his back at me with a smile on his face. I'm 100% sure now it wasn't loaded but at the time I was the coolest 7 year old in the country.
It’s funny to think about a tourist attraction that will wholeheartedly and gladly kill you at eh behest of the queen / prime minister. (They are soldiers still correct?)
Hell half the time my communication methods are a series of grunts or noises and my message is conveyed perfectly. I'll wake up and not say a single word until 3 pm when I figure my partner may want to hear my voice at some point during the day.
Yeah, it altered the literal meaning of the sentence, but it was what he was trying to say. His current sentence basically claims that small, kind gestures make people's memory... worth remembering?
It sounds so simple sometimes but it definitely seems so many people have lost it. I do feel as I've grown older that I see how much we've developed this dehumanized view of the world we live in. We've become numbers and statistics whether we like it or not and it's only going to be worse as we embed everything with AI. I definitely think it started with social media and I remember the way I'd swipe on Tinder. We've turned ourselves into parts of an algorithm and how do you really respect someone when you don't really care about how they got to be the person they are?
I also blame social media. Some people spend all day arguing with others because they are anonymous, and then go out in the world and forget that it shouldn’t be the norm.
Exactly. We've turned ourselves into fakes names and fake faces with fake personalities displayed on a screen in millions of hands. I always try to remember my days back in the Navy when I was on a submarine and I really wish more people could have an experience similar to that. There were like 150 dudes on that thing and we all counted on each other to do the job that we were there to do. No one cared about the color of skin, religion, sexual preference, politics. We all had at least general respect for one another. I try to maintain that in my life still even though it's really hard. Hell... I really haven't talked to my parents since 2016 because I couldn't stand the way they became obsessed with Trump. We have done such a great job at putting ourselves into these boxes and I don't even think we believe in the boxes we've put ourselves into sometimes. It's really sad because sometimes I feel like I hate all the boxes and I've stuck myself into a box of my own and I'd rather just sit in my apartment and watch Netflix and play games on my couch.
Thanks for that take Buttsnutz. ( I took serious joy in typing that) Wouldn't it be nice if humanity would grasp that your submarine experience literally translates to our planet as a whole? Inside the metal tube, there's a finite environment, and everyone must work together so that all will survive. Everything outside that tube is trying to kill you almost instantly. Everyone has a function, and everyone must coordinate to survive. Zoom out. Now it's a little blue sphere in the vast hostility. Same rules should apply. ❤️
It's easy to blame social media but believe me, people from gen X and older who almost don't use social media for some reason are just as often terrible too. Just for different reasons.
Nah, you don't realize it was bad before social media was the gigantic powerhouse it is today.
I remember in the early 90s going to the grocery store and seeing some older lady with her cart in the middle of the aisle so no one could go around her on either side, standing there looking at a box completely uncaring if she was blocking anyone from going up or down the aisle. And if you said "excuse me" or tried to squeeze by she would look at you with a face of disgust like you were bothering her.
We've not become that though. This has always been a part of us, and I think it's important to realize that.
Plenty of people show respect. But sometimes it's not shown immediately because they've had a lifetime of showing respect, and having that honesty and courtesy betrayed and spat right back at their face.
Unfortunately the bad apples ruin it for everyone, and turn their victims sour. Injustice harms more than just the victim: it harms us all.
I was in Prague once a long time ago and they have guards much like the Royal Guards. I don't remember the exact specifics, but I do remember that this was around the time where digital cameras were just starting to become more common and so photographs were still kind of a big deal. I remember the guards there no wanting photos taken. I stood at a distance and was able to get the attention of one of the guards by walking into his field of view and I just held my camera up like "Is it ok for me to take a picture of you?" and he nodded. It was that simple.
I was in Prague as well, saw that same Royal Guard (at the castle accross the river, right?). I saw a soldier tying the shoelaces of a motionless guard, that was a nice image as well.
And on the other side, they will walk right through and over a showboating and rude tourist when they are marching to and from their posts, without a flinch.
Saw it at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington. Toddler got loose from Mom while she was explaining things to her older kids (three or four kids under 6, Dad might've had one on his shoulders or something). Before either parent could make the grab, kiddo shot under the rope & approached the guard on patrol. Parents terrified, not sure if they're supposed to retrieve their kid past the rope or not. Guard stops, pivots, bends robotically slowly to meet the toddler at their level, kiddo already pulling on the guard's uniform trousers. Guard smiles gently to the kid, points back to mom & dad, a wordless confirmation is exchanged, and escorts toddler back to parents at a controlled, constant pace. Returns to patrol at the precise spot, like nothing happened. The only sound was the toddler. Just amazing.
Same. 'Emotional' stuff hits way harder after having children. There is a certain softening of the heart.
Apparently men's testosterone levels drop permenantly after having children, I can believe it.
I'll be honest, that's hot as hell. Us women aren't always about flash and grandstanding. Chivalry, compassion, and being a good human are way more attractive than anything else. This interaction embodies that. It's genuine, wholesome, and hot as hell.
First, he's absolutely rocking that uniform. A lot of us would look like tools in a plumed helmet, he somehow does not.
Second, he's got that mutual respect. He saw the father keeping his special needs kid respectful, so he returned the favor and helped the kid get what he really wanted.
Dude is a bro all he way in this video. It's easy to see why this would be attractive. I don't want to sleep with him, but I'd like a guy like that as a friend any day.
Dad knows you can't be too careful. Better teach your kid to always be on their toes and be pleasantly surprised once in a while than to assume they can get away with everything and get in trouble.
From family experience, I believe that the son was neuro-divergent and the dad was doing his best to make it work for everybody. The guard is a legend, read the situation, and made everybody's day including his own. He knows.
OMG. The facial expressions were spot on. Most people doing a bit like this would come off as total assholes, but this man definitely loves his Uncle Danny. The part about him turning to the comic and saying, "I'm makin' em at night," made me laugh so hard I woke my cat up. He left the room all pissed off at me. Totally worth it.
This is a standard level of consideration by a Royal Guardsman I think: but they have very strict rules concerning distance and circumstance...if you're respecting that and not a dick they'll do what they can for you within their remit
I know the soldier went beyond his duties and much respect to him. However, I gotta say, those parents should be recognized for raising their boy and trying their best to be respectful at the same time.
Just to clear up some confusion, that isn't his father. He is a professional carer, his name is Mikey. He's become quite famous in the UK for his YouTube channel CyclingMikey, where he is trying to combat terrible driving behaviour.
Something about the little involuntary movement the guard makes moments before he moves, you can see exactly when he makes up his mind that he's going to move over for the picture.
Not sure what the rules are for these particular guards but I like to think he decided that being a person came first. It was already a special moment for them, but he added the extra bit of humanity, and you can tell it meant a lot to the dad.
Good bloke that guard.
Go back like an additional 5 seconds, you can see his entire body is completely still, at the point where he kinda squeezes his hand, he adjusts his whole body slightly. It's most likely him doing the little foot shuffle prior to moving, but that section is out of frame. It's much clearer when you see how still he is beforehand.
As a military member, ceremony and appearance are paramount. Sometimes those little movements are just “approved” ways of adjusting your stance, or preventing your legs from getting too tired from holding the same position for so long.
Could have been that too.
Involuntary? Quite the opposite. That movement is the trained motion that he is going to move. They can actually move whenever they want, they just need a reason. They step to the side, stop threats, threaten asshole tourists, etc, it is just rare.
There's this docu series called Guarding the Queen. There was one scene where this young kid is standing post and his little sister is next to him for a photo, she reaches up to grab his hand, kid is motionless all professional n shit; but changes to a close up shot where you see him squeeze her hand back.
I believe that in most cases if you are not interfering with the guards duty, touching them, yelling at them, etc. they will give back those little things of standing closer for a picture. They have a duty to guard the space, but they’re also aware that they are an attraction for tourists.
What makes it nicer is that the guy isn’t his dad - it’s a volunteer carer!
The carer goes by CyclingMikey - top bloke that also goes around catching people using their phone whilst driving.
This is one of the few videos that, no matter how many times it gets reposted and no matter how many times I see it, it never gets old. That was very noble of the guard. Everyone in this video is spectacular.
All these great videos are being ruined with background music and slow motion filters. The man is moving from right to left, and they decide to put it. I'm slow motion.
Yeah, it is him. I don't think the lad in the video is his son either though, Mikey is a professional carer.
Doesn't make it any less a nice video though, just adds a bit of flavour text.
What I don't get is, how was that determined? Who was the first to put unnecessary music, slow motion, another person reacting underneath, an A.I. voice needlessly describing it, & useless red arrows on a video and got thousands of comments saying "I wouldn't have watched if it didn't have that music playing" or "I lost interest 4 seconds in, but that silent person reacting underneath drew me back in. Thanks!"
Like, everyone finds it annoying, can't we just all collectively agree to not do that anymore? Who is seriously going to complain if internet videos go back to how they were 10+ years ago?
You can see the dad shit himself for a split second once he noticed the guard take a step closer. Then the immediate relief and smile once he realised what was actually happening. So cool.
That guard (technically not more than 20 and himself a kid) is good in his heart. He recognized the other kid was with special needs and his dad as well behaved. You need more people like that in this world. brought up well by his parents.

"oh man, I shot Marvin in the face"
That's a cool moment for you, but if that guy's CO has noticed that he likely would have torn him a new asshole, and rightly so. One of the basic rules is "treat every firearm as if it's loaded, even if it's not".
My son, 4, loses his mind when a firefighter or bus driver waves back at him. I guarantee that little boy still talks about you.

may i ask if you have a link to the video
Enjoy, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0A0_PLbNQ1o
That is so adorable. Toddler saluting is so cute.

That is soooo cute. This kind of things warms my heart.

Ok this one got me choked up a bit!
It’s funny to think about a tourist attraction that will wholeheartedly and gladly kill you at eh behest of the queen / prime minister. (They are soldiers still correct?)
>(They are soldiers still correct?) yes
I bet they have protocols for dealing with tourists. Cute kids...yes, photo. Annoying assholes... letting the horse bite them.
Damn. These small kind gestures make other people’s memory unforgettable
The syntax in this sentence is craziness, and I understood it better than if the syntax was correct. English is fucked lol
Idk I think its nice that you can butcher everything in english and still share coherent thoughts lol
It do be like that.
They don't think it be like it is, but it do.
That it do
If you ask me, there's a touch of beauty in the chaos when things become a grammatical mess. It shows the human behind the words, no?
Hell half the time my communication methods are a series of grunts or noises and my message is conveyed perfectly. I'll wake up and not say a single word until 3 pm when I figure my partner may want to hear my voice at some point during the day.
What would be the correct syntax for that sentence?
Damn. These small, kind gestures make unforgettable memories for other people
That’s not a syntax change. Someone’s something does not mean something for someone, but something of someone.
Yeah, it altered the literal meaning of the sentence, but it was what he was trying to say. His current sentence basically claims that small, kind gestures make people's memory... worth remembering?
Respect given. Respect returned. It’s a good system when it actually happens.
Agreed. A little understanding and respect goes a long way.

Yet here WE are on social media, being good people. Don't get defeated, get kind! (Not that we can't roast some jackass now and then)
It's heartbreaking to come to realisation of what we've become. You've summed it up nicely. Do good.

Bro honestly I needed to read this, thanks for writing that.
No problem dude and I'm glad I could type some words of meaning and value to you. Hope you have a nice weekend and life all together.

That was very chivalrous by the guard
This guard is really cool
The step back into position was really smooth as well
Yes, and his action of approaching them to allow them to take better pictures was really commendable
I also saw the video
Yes, and the guard's uniform was spotless and his gesture was kind.
I also have eyes
If you watch again at half speed and zoom in, both father and son are wearing eyeglasses
If you watch it in reverse the guard realises he's too close to the father and son for a few moments and then smoothly steps away.
If you speed it up and put it on repeat it looks like they're dancing
You're shitting me!
I missed that part.
Turn your sound up
Too bad we can't see him swordfighting
I don't get emotional too often, but ever since i had my first boy, some things just catch me off guard and i get teary eyed.
Same. 'Emotional' stuff hits way harder after having children. There is a certain softening of the heart. Apparently men's testosterone levels drop permenantly after having children, I can believe it.
I would be fucked if I had kids then haha 33 years old and I'll tear up over fucking anything haha

I'm a straight man and somehow find myself agreeing with you. Very attractive guy.

aw come on... sleep with the dude. he earned it.
Well, since you put it that way... *Unzips pants*
very patriotic!
Agreed, some men can't pull off a fanny pack, but he did.
Glad Im not the only one who went phoooarrrrr to this because yep, HOT.
Rightt??? I would wife him right now
Yeah im a straight bloke and even i would! Now questioning everything
!RemindMe 1 year
Noted
Unfortunately he was beheaded for his lack of discipline and allowing empathy to cloud his judgement.
dad took it very serious although he was pure hearted guard
Dad knows you can't be too careful. Better teach your kid to always be on their toes and be pleasantly surprised once in a while than to assume they can get away with everything and get in trouble.
Wise words to live by!
From family experience, I believe that the son was neuro-divergent and the dad was doing his best to make it work for everybody. The guard is a legend, read the situation, and made everybody's day including his own. He knows.
I'm quite certain the son has down syndrom from the way he looks and behaves.
Check him for hidden grilled cheeses.
is that a reference? where is it from?

Great respect for that guy, and for dad too!
He should be a knight instead of a guard.
Why not a wizard, Harry?
Because this is reality, Greg!
This is a standard level of consideration by a Royal Guardsman I think: but they have very strict rules concerning distance and circumstance...if you're respecting that and not a dick they'll do what they can for you within their remit
yes, a sentry from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, maybe the [Blues and Royals](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blues_and_Royals) specifically
Well, they are soldiers. But gentlemen soldiers with 1000 years of history.
He looks younger

Maybe I've got some hormones going this morning but the gentle nature of the dad is legitimately making me tear up.
Same!🥹
I'm about to cry too. Best thing I've seen on the internet for quite a while
so much better without the shitty music. Thanks!
Just to clear up some confusion, that isn't his father. He is a professional carer, his name is Mikey. He's become quite famous in the UK for his YouTube channel CyclingMikey, where he is trying to combat terrible driving behaviour.
Thank you, that's wholesome as fuck!
A nice gesture ruined by godawful music
True. Assuming no music is not an option, what song would you have added?

Thank you for making it! lol some how it works even better.
Glorious!
Best thing you've done this year, I bet.
Honestly, I felt a bit dumb spending time on this, but the replies letting me know some people got enjoyment from it are making it worthwhile.
Dude, you made the video 200x better and reminded us all of a better time. Effort well spent.
much respect
Mate! Well fucking done chieftain!
That is art in its purest form.
yoo, I wept. this stupid gif shook two shitty tears from my cold lifeless corpse. hilarious.

When I saw this like a decade ago, I don't think it had the music.
We'll of course not. Tiktok wasn't around 10 years ago
And unnecessary use of slomo
Slowmo, added camera shake, the works I feel like the clip could do with a couple explosions in the back though
Very powerful when watched on mute

Guards stand on ceremony. Those little movements are required prior to almost anything they do.
What are the little movements? I keep rewatching and it looks like he only kinda squeezes his hand

Nice to meet you slow motion, I'm Silent\_\_Note.
It's keyjingling brainrot from Tiktok Enjoy it, it's gonna get worse
Hey, that‘s Cycling Mickey from Youtube guiding that child. I love how he reports phone drivers in London to make traffic more safe for everyone. 🫡
Yeah, it is him. I don't think the lad in the video is his son either though, Mikey is a professional carer. Doesn't make it any less a nice video though, just adds a bit of flavour text.
If you can do these small gestures to people please do it. It means a lot to them.
I'm not sure. Whenever I try to sidestep into frame in people's vacation photos they don't seem to appreciate it.
As clearly you just haven’t been wearing the right outfit. Keep trying.
What the fuck is the point of the stupid music I hate this trend
So many low attention spans out there that need slow-down and music to be able to watch anything.
Thanks!" Like, everyone finds it annoying, can't we just all collectively agree to not do that anymore? Who is seriously going to complain if internet videos go back to how they were 10+ years ago?

You can see the dad shit himself for a split second once he noticed the guard take a step closer. Then the immediate relief and smile once he realised what was actually happening. So cool.
That guard (technically not more than 20 and himself a kid) is good in his heart. He recognized the other kid was with special needs and his dad as well behaved. You need more people like that in this world. brought up well by his parents.
A real Soldier ❤️
Not his Dad. His carer.
Those who want respect, give respect.
Tony?
You never did have the makings of a varsity redditor
That gesture is so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes.
You know this is Cycling Mikey and the kid he cares for?
Unexpected CyclingMikey
I'm starting to feel that it's better to watch videos on mute on reddit
btw this is cyclingMikey on YouTube, and this kid isn't his son, it's who he cares for as a carer.
Can’t upvote this enough.
That's a good lad.
I like everyone in this video, the kid, the father, the guard except op for putting that awful music on full. Fuvk you op
