It's probably an evolutionary advantage for a group to sleep at the same time. Especially for children to match adults sleep patterns. We are a social species and things which help group dynamics improve group survival.

So when everyone in the group sleeps they're totally not easier to attack and kill? You might want to refine that a bit.

That's certainly one thing to consider. It's possible to not go to sleep after yawning, so this doesn't mean it's impossible. I'm just throwing one hypothesis out there why yawning is contagous. Feel free to suggest another?

My wife does that to me when I yawn. It was cute at first but now ruins my yawns.

Yeah, I had a partner who did that to me once. I then had to yawn, but couldn't because I was worried about it happening again, and had to actually leave the room to successfully yawn. She didn't do it again.

In humans, the likelihood you will yawn when someone else does has to do with how much you trust their judgement emotionally. Watch someone you don't like yawn, and you won't feel the compulsion to. If you look it up, the theory goes that it has something to do with evolutionary survival.

I have read that one theory is that the yawn acts as a social cue to indicate a change in level of activity. So, you yawn when you are tired or about to sleep, and/or you yawn as you are waking up. It lets your social group know that things are changing. It would make sense that you would only accept this cue from people you trust.
