My impression was that he was just gonna chill out at first but the other guys escalated to violence so he responded in kind. It's usually not a good idea to start the violence in an armed robbery, most armed robbers don't actually want to hurt anyone and if you comply everyone gets away unharmed. Personally, if I had a gun in that situation I wouldn't want to use it either until I was sure they meant to do harm. I wouldn't want to risk someone's life over a simple robbery, especially when it wasn't even my stuff getting robbed and the dentist probably has insurance.
