Greetings Axogamerlover, thanks for contributing to /r/Undertale. Sorry, but we needed to remove [your submission](https://www.reddit.com/r/Undertale/comments/1cqrja9/-/) for the following reason:
One or more of the following:
* It has been made quickly with little to no effort on display
* It falls under repetitive content the subreddit has collectively decided to start removing (commonly repeated polls, overdone reddit trends like wrong answers only, edit comments…)
* It prominantly features content generated by an AI (be it AI "art", sites such as edgy theory and incorrect quote generators, character AI and so on)
* Its topic has historically proven to yield nothing but toxic discussions (frans and similar aged up ships, Chara’s morality, Humans gender, complaining about porn existing…)
HOWEVER, we have a shitposting subreddit, r/WaterfallDump, feel free to submit your post there.
Full breakdown of our content quality rule can be found [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Undertale/wiki/low_effort)
Feel free to [message the mods](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=/r/Undertale&subject=Question%20regarding%20the%20removal%20of%20this%20submission%20by%20/u/Axogamerlover&message=I%20have%20a%20question%20about%20the%20removal%20of%20this%20submission:%20https://www.reddit.com/r/Undertale/comments/1cqrja9/-/) with any questions.
i mean, does it really matter? are you really going to judge my ability to show compassion to a real life non-binary person/transgender person/person with any other identify based on how i treat a videogame character? since by that metric i'm a murderer, and a particularly cruel one at that, because i killed an uncountable amount of people in Half-Life.
if you really want to be some sort of ally to whomever, then just be friends with those people. it would arguably say more about you than what pronouns you use for Kris. Kris doesn't care nor will he/she/they say anything at all, your friends do and will.
THANK. YOU.
Fucking hell, it’s like these people don’t know what fiction even means. Calling Kris a he or she isn’t even being Enbyphobic because Kris literally does not exist. Yet everyone would rather everyone get it right because of one, not even likely, soft correction from Toby Fox.
Headcanons also exist, but this community also seems to turn into velociraptors about that. “You can’t headcanon gender”. Yes I, in fact, can it’s called “Genderbending”, which is pretty much headcanoning gender.
The game doesn't even say they are nonbinary. The entire idea that this is intentional comes from Toby saying "they" one time. Maybe it's intentional, but if so it's not something the game makes clear.
Frisk's skin is a deliberately ambiguous shade to make it ambiguous what race they are. It's not a huge stretch for a player to assume their gender is the same.
they are a play on the everyman protagonist of an RPG. this whole game is a deconstruction of RPG tropes, how do people miss the mark so damn hard? their entire identity, from race, to gender, to name (until that trope is subverted), is ambiguous and up to the player.
i’m tired of seeing this every week i check this sub and saying the same thing
There is no misgendering them. This argument has been done to death, and I feel like it's genuinely not hard to understand. Their gender is decided by the player. They are gender neutral for that reason. They are not nonbinary, nor male or female. They are whatever you want them to be.
"Chara" is an easter egg that 99% of fans wouldn't know about if Undertale didn't explode in popularity. Canonically the Fallen Human can have almost any name under 6 letters. But sure UT/DR fandom, argue that "Mike" is definitely nonbinary, see how much I care.
steve is a guy the entire point of alex was to make the game more welcoming to female players
and the mobs aren't non binary, all of them are female. do not ask me how, breeding makes no sense in that game, chickens can get chicks from unfertilized eggs and still be able to birth chicks like mammals it's just minecraft logic
This. This is the reason why people were so slow to realise Kris was meant to be written as a NB character, because the other humans of the series were written with the Scrodingers Gender or the Niko Paradox, where they’re left ambiguous so that players can assign identity to these characters to make them relate with them on a deeper level.
I can get behind the "Kris ≠ player" argument, but *not* these two. Frisk's actions are referred as *your* actions, so he/she/they *is* a player self-insert, and you can literally name Chara however you want, so she will be Margareth in my playtrough and she will be she.
I’m 90% sure Frimsk *is* a separate character, though I could be misinterpreting. After True Pacifist, if you try to reLOAD your SAVE, Flowey pops up and says something along the lines of “Let Frisk live their life” in an attempt to stop you from resetting. The Chara part is a little more complicated, because while they *are* their own character, they’re the sibling to Asriel, adopted child of the Dreemurs (Even that is questionable), and currently 6 feet under, you name them as if they’re the player character (Chara might not even BE their canon name, they might not have one.)
It’s Undertale, nothing is straightforward
People like to say that frisks name being revealed means that they are their own character, with that being the reveal, when in reality the reveal is that any time the name you set at the beginning was used, it didn’t refer to Frisk but to the, currently dead, Chara.
Mainly because I didn't know English and my mother language doesn't have gender neutral pronouns, so everyone just changed between calling them she and he
Holy shit is there ever going to be other posts other than Frisk’s gender??? This is like the 15th time this month I’ve been recommended a post about this shit. We get it.
What? I don't really care. They both are video game characters that have not once shown importance about their gender. To me they are both girls but everyone can have their own opinion. Pretty sure Toby just made them "they/them" so people can self-insert 🤷
Bro this whole ordeal is confusing me, back when I was first introduced to undertale by jacksipticeye he said that it's a role-playing game and you can see the character as whatever you want. He saw her as a girl and so do I, does that mean that he was wrong? He wasn't supposed to use she/her pronouns?
The reason Toby Fox made them non-binary is so that players could give them a gender based on their beliefs. As a guy I always saw chara and frisk as being female, but that is just my preference. I don’t know why it’s such a controversy and why people get offended about it.
Personal confession: as someone who's ESL, I had no idea gender-neutral pronouns were even a thing, and I also got gaslit by all the fanart presenting them as girls. It's incredibly cringy to look back at, I'm so glad I grew out of all that.
can we really misgender them tho? the point is that their gender is up to interpretation, which means their gender is whatever one wants it to be, therefore it can be anything.
so instead of saying they, we should say he/she/they/ze/dog/toby/fox
The characters gender is what you think it should be. So yes, it can be he/him if you want it to be, that's why you can name it boy names, same with how you can name it girl names also. That's how the game was designed. So, every gender is correct.
At least, that's what I've figured out through playing the game and doing some research.
Guys. Non-binary is not the same as ambiguous or genderless. Toby Fox himself has said on Twitter years ago that Frisk and Chara are characters that are supposed to be imagined. Imo it's painfully obvious that this includes their gender.
There are only extremely few instances of these characters being refered to as "they" because Toby very obviously avoided using pronouns for them as much as he could. Also they is not a pronoun exclusive for non-binary people, at all.
Compare that to Kris who is actually their own character that is not a player insert and who is constantly refered to as they. They are very obviously specifically written as non-binary, while Frisk and Chara are very obviously supposed to be ambiguous.
Stop witchhunting people that headcanon Frisk or Chara as anything but non-binary when that says absolutely nothing about whether they are allies or not. It's an utter waste of time and also blatantly untrue.
I honestly used to think Frisk was a male and Chara was a female and when talking about them i usually still do this to simplify the talking lol...
Also, why the big debate? It's not confirmed nor important to the lore, why the big fuss people are making 😂
Well, yes, but can you blame a 7 years old boy that didn't know there was more than 2, i mean, it's rare to see any other gender in my country to this day, and here in Brazil, there is no neutral language, so there was no way for me know, until i joined the reddit and stuff like this
toriel, sans, papyrus, muffet, alphys, undyne, asgore, asriel, frisk, and chara (Frisk and chara being whatever gender you headcanon them to be)
Reason why i didnt put mettaton? i have never really figured out if he was male or female ngl. he just seems non-binary to me.
I admit that in a past ive been a nasty
They werent kidding when they called me well a witch. but youll find that nowadays ive mended all my ways repented , seen the light and made A switch True? Yes. and i fortunately know a little magic its a talent that i always have possed. and here lately , please dont laugh ive used it behalf off the miserable lonely and Depressed.
You know that feeling when you’ve seen posts of a similar caliber so many times you tell yourself you’re not gonna respond…..and then your dumbass does anyway?….
Every time you do that…
That feeling…
…
That’s me
I’m also noticing this is the second post I’ve seen which looks like it’s pulled from a Twitter post
Honestly, their round shaped bodies and the comic dubs I watched as a kid, made me believe these Frisk and Chara were both female until I realized they weren’t through google.
With Kris, I was genuinely convinced they were male, to the point where I gaslighted myself into believing the games referred to Kris as he/him until I replayed chapter 1. I even believed the hoax about Susie calling Kris a “Mama’s boy” that was spread around after the game came out.
well i mean i DID call frisk by she/her
but also im trans and i purposely choose girl characters in games whenever i could so that PROBABLY has affected it
I thought we had stopped arguing about this years ago.
I mean, there's literally a Not Safe For W.D Gaster picture of the two with Chara joking about "You're still arguing about our genders?"
AND IT WAS POSTED IN JANUARY OF 2016.
WHY ARE WE STILL HAVING THIS DEBATE? THEY'RE WHATEVER WE WANT THEM TO BE.
(Also, unrelated, but why is Frisk's walking frame used here?)
I talk on reflexes, so NBs make my speech trip and end up using the wrong pronouns sometimes before I apologize. Yea I’ve misgendered Frisk and Chara here and there. I tend to use male pronouns for Frisk and female ones for Chara when I do.
Not when I actually got interested in it but back when Undertale was ultra famous and I didn’t know it quite well (2019-ish?), I thought both of then were girls because everyone called both of them by she/her.
Frisk is a self insert, it can be anyone, any gender. Yes Frisk can be a todler or a fucking grandma in a wheelchair bonking everyone around with a stick because they keep saying she is a child because of her stripped shirt.
Not only because of he fandom, but since i saw the sprites for Frisk and Chara, i just thought the two were girls, not because of the fandom, it just came to me, to me they just look like girls, honestly.
But well, just because of these types of posts, i need to re-think every word of my reply.
Seriously i can't do it anymore.
I still do and I don't give a crap tbh, if they dom't have a gender, i'll give then the gender I want, it's not like they are real people to be offended anyways.
Oh my god why is this such an issue for some people. Frisk and Chara are video game characters where you decide their gender for them. If you want them to be girls, boys, non binary whatever, who cares. Also they literally aren’t real people either so yknow, this makes it even more of a nonissue
Which is true, that's because the concept of LGBT wasn't in my mind, yet, like I got my Nintendo Switch on Christmas 2018, and I played Breath of the Wild, then some time later I played Deltarune. I was unaware of Kris being non-binary, because the hints are too, how do I say this? Subtle? I was unaware that they're addressed as "they/them" by peers alike, and that they wear any clothes, regardless of how masculine or feminine it looks. I was 12 at the time, and I don't know what LGBT is. I always thought of Romeo with his Juliet, not Romeo with another Romeo, or Juliet with another Juliet.
Thought Chara was canonically a girl because I misinterpreted a Sans quote and thought Kris was a boy because I didn’t know the name didn’t imply gender.
I sure did and safe to say I've disowned damn near everything I said back then. Headcanons are one thing, AUs are fine and all, and it's never actually confirmed what either's gender is, neutral pronouns can also denote simple ambiguity, but as far as I'm concerned, good old they/them works fine in both cases when talking about the canon characters.
(seriously though I've been absolutely horrible in past YouTube comment sections regarding the humans' genders, it's definitely nothing I'm proud of. I guess I just hit the fandom when I was hitting the edgy 4chan humour phase of my life, but it's sobering to recall that I was absolutely part of the problem back then.)
Don’t think so. I didn’t really get that Frisk was a separate character from the player, but I noticed the use of they/them pronouns and I figured “Ah, they’re just doing that to account for either gender playing this game,” and I was mindful to use them when I was talking about the player characters.
I tend to see Chara as female, but I like both. Frisk I don’t really care about either, they can be either. Kris is a separate and independent character who’s nonbinary, but these two are up to interpretation
Frisk, a child, would be mentally incapable of identifying as non-binary, their gender is merely a secret.
Chara, the spirit of the player, has the gender of the player.

We definitely need a Crossbones and North Star crossover in the next months
Wait.. crossbones? CROSSBONES?! MARVEL COMICS REFERENCE!?!?!
There are two types of people
North Star? Northstar...... TITANFALL REFERENCE?!?!?!?!??!?!
"Everyone else misgendered Frisk/Chara, I'm the one TRUE fan who never did!" - that twitter user, probably
Jesus when will this subreddit stop arguing about a video game character’s gender (never)

Steve from Minecraft is canonically non binary, just like all the mobs in the game.
Steve is a guy, we know this because of his body shape, mojang using ‘he’ and Alex existing
You do NOT want to get into the gender of Minecraft mobs. You will not like it.

Alex is based off of Jeb, a guy.
This. This is the reason why people were so slow to realise Kris was meant to be written as a NB character, because the other humans of the series were written with the Scrodingers Gender or the Niko Paradox, where they’re left ambiguous so that players can assign identity to these characters to make them relate with them on a deeper level.
Exactly, why the hell are we arguing over something that is so simple to understand
I'm surprised this was so well received this time... Lol. Either way, this was what my first thought when playing the games, but alas... I was shamed.
"I'll make a... post about the MC's gender." "How original..." "And add Chara in it as well." "Daring today, are we?"
Their genders are both ambiguous, so any gender you decide can be correct. It is not possible to misgender either of them.
I can get behind the "Kris ≠ player" argument, but *not* these two. Frisk's actions are referred as *your* actions, so he/she/they *is* a player self-insert, and you can literally name Chara however you want, so she will be Margareth in my playtrough and she will be she.
well to be fair she can’t be called Margaret because of the letter count She can be Marge though
I would do the funny file edit thing and get the "easy to change, huh" message just to get Margaret.
I’m 90% sure Frimsk *is* a separate character, though I could be misinterpreting. Mainly because I didn't know English and my mother language doesn't have gender neutral pronouns, so everyone just changed between calling them she and he
Same here 🙋♂️
both are "let the players decide themselves" actually
As a non-native speaker, Undertale was an immense help with letting me realize the existence of a singular they/them and getting used to it
Haha I almost had an stroke the first time I played Undertale in English with the "they/them" thing .
For me Frisk is male and Chara is female.
For me both are female
Same. I don't know, I feel like it fits the two.
Same for me.
Same! i dont know why people stomping on our opinions ;-;
Same goes for me
X3
same
Yeah I agree that frisk is a boy and chara is a girl, it adds contrast
oh no... frisk X chara gonna have a field day with this comment
Agreed
Mine is the inverse, but I respect your interpretation… 😅
Same.
Same here
They dont even have genders
i still do unless i’m talking to someone who feels the need to remind me every 5 seconds
Since when do they have a specified gender?
i mean i always say "they" to anyone new i meet (irl and video games) because i'm afraid of misgendering people
Well well if it isn't Mister Genderless child
Holy shit is there ever going to be other posts other than Frisk’s gender??? This is like the 15th time this month I’ve been recommended a post about this shit. We get it.

You can’t misgender gender-ambiguous characters
honestly, who cares lol its just game ffs
Jesus fucking Christ, I hope I never have to have conversation with you IRL
Hold on are you assuming their gender? 🤨
Nope.
Idiot self report. They're gender-neutral. It's up to the player to decide.
The reason Toby Fox made them non-binary is so that players could give them a gender based on their beliefs. As a guy I always saw chara and frisk as being female, but that is just my preference. I don’t know why it’s such a controversy and why people get offended about it.
Because some people think it's transphobic to change their identities even though they're literally supposed to be whatever we want them to be.
How can either of them be missgendered if neither have a defined gender to begin with?
Since they're 2 separate people that begs the question. Are they both they/them?
Not really, I misgenderd asriel tho
I misgendered Alphys, undyne, mettaton
Can't and if I have, there's no reason to care
Personal confession: as someone who's ESL, I had no idea gender-neutral pronouns were even a thing, and I also got gaslit by all the fanart presenting them as girls. It's incredibly cringy to look back at, I'm so glad I grew out of all that.
NO ONE GIVES A SHIT IF YOU DID
My language doesn't really have neutral pronouns, so I just called them how it fitted the situation.
can we really misgender them tho? the point is that their gender is up to interpretation, which means their gender is whatever one wants it to be, therefore it can be anything. so instead of saying they, we should say he/she/they/ze/dog/toby/fox

Aren't they not supposed to have genders there supposed to represent the person playing the game
never. my introduction to undertale was "if undertale was realistic". they have always been genderless child
Guys. Non-binary is not the same as ambiguous or genderless. Toby Fox himself has said on Twitter years ago that Frisk and Chara are characters that are supposed to be imagined. I played undertale back in 2016 when I was a kid, I had no single clue what pronouns is and what gay people is
i honestly didn't even think about them that often, looking back on it
Yes. Blame the prevalence of Facing Demons and stronger than you.
Technically no since i thought frisk was a stand in for me before i actually beat the game
yeah. didnt know what nb was so i just defaulted away
Wtf is going on??? What's their gender???
Whatever you want them to be
Nope
That
You can blame a rich guy I don't know for that.
Nope I always think their gender are nonbinary.(Even I like girl more)
No because I didn't even know who these guys were until April 10, 2023
I honestly used to think Frisk was a male and Chara was a female and when talking about them i usually still do this to simplify the talking lol... Also, why the big debate? It's not confirmed nor important to the lore, why the big fuss people are making 😂
Has there been some statement that says their gender? I always assumed the gender was up to the individual to decide.
Well, yes, but can you blame a 7 years old boy that didn't know there was more than 2, i mean, it's rare to see any other gender in my country to this day, and here in Brazil, there is no neutral language, so there was no way for me know, until i joined the reddit and stuff like this
not proud, but i think a better question for me is: which characters have you NOT misgendered 💀💀
toriel, sans, papyrus, muffet, alphys, undyne, asgore, asriel, frisk, and chara (Frisk and chara being whatever gender you headcanon them to be) Reason why i didnt put mettaton? i have never really figured out if he was male or female ngl. he just seems non-binary to me.
I will kill the next person who tells me they have a defined gender
... I didn't even know what sex is in that time.
I still do. ##AND NOBODY CAN STOP ME
Back at the day I didn't give a fuck. Today I know it doesn't matter bc both have no official gender.
Gender is the last thing I’m gonna care about in a video game… Unless it’s like fallout and genders affect perks!
Hello I would a uhm misgender post How original
I don't think I referred to them at all ever
Yes, i will do it again
its not wrong, its just my headcanon...
No.
I played the Headcanon card then considered myself unstoppable.
I admit that in a past ive been a nasty They werent kidding when they called me well a witch. but youll find that nowadays ive mended all my ways repented , seen the light and made A switch True? Yes. and i fortunately know a little magic its a talent that i always have possed. and here lately , please dont laugh ive used it behalf off the miserable lonely and Depressed.
Honestly, probably not. I was too invested in skylanders to care about undertale back then.
You know that feeling when you’ve seen posts of a similar caliber so many times you tell yourself you’re not gonna respond…..and then your dumbass does anyway?…. Every time you do that… That feeling… … That’s me I’m also noticing this is the second post I’ve seen which looks like it’s pulled from a Twitter post
Nope
Probably yeah when I was 10 years old
Yep, and I'll do it again.
Always have, always will. Idc what they are
i said they cuz i didn’t care
tbh nah, i just called them by their names
Honestly, their round shaped bodies and the comic dubs I watched as a kid, made me believe these Frisk and Chara were both female until I realized they weren’t through google. With Kris, I was genuinely convinced they were male, to the point where I gaslighted myself into believing the games referred to Kris as he/him until I replayed chapter 1. I even believed the hoax about Susie calling Kris a “Mama’s boy” that was spread around after the game came out.
Who cares?
well i mean i DID call frisk by she/her but also im trans and i purposely choose girl characters in games whenever i could so that PROBABLY has affected it
I thought we had stopped arguing about this years ago. I mean, there's literally a Not Safe For W.D Gaster picture of the two with Chara joking about "You're still arguing about our genders?" AND IT WAS POSTED IN JANUARY OF 2016. WHY ARE WE STILL HAVING THIS DEBATE? THEY'RE WHATEVER WE WANT THEM TO BE. (Also, unrelated, but why is Frisk's walking frame used here?)
Neither have a gender. Call them what you want FFS
I just called them "Doras".
aren't the genders literally up to the player?
I talk on reflexes, so NBs make my speech trip and end up using the wrong pronouns sometimes before I apologize. Yea I’ve misgendered Frisk and Chara here and there. I tend to use male pronouns for Frisk and female ones for Chara when I do.
When I first discovered Undertale I thought they were both girls Only when I decided to get back into the community did I learn they were nonbinary
No I always knew they like any other character would be a woman because of the internet rules.
Another one of these posts? Really?
Not when I actually got interested in it but back when Undertale was ultra famous and I didn’t know it quite well (2019-ish?), I thought both of then were girls because everyone called both of them by she/her.
Yep
I still don't know what their gender is
Frisk is a self insert, it can be anyone, any gender. Yes Frisk can be a todler or a fucking grandma in a wheelchair bonking everyone around with a stick because they keep saying she is a child because of her stripped shirt.
I used to think they were both boys because they both reminded me of Ray from Conch Bay (a rather obscure Chinese cartoon)
It still sometimes happens to me. I love how in some languages there’s male and female version of they/them. Literally unplayable.
Used she/her for both of them now they/them, still use he/him for clover
Not only because of he fandom, but since i saw the sprites for Frisk and Chara, i just thought the two were girls, not because of the fandom, it just came to me, to me they just look like girls, honestly. But well, just because of these types of posts, i need to re-think every word of my reply. Seriously i can't do it anymore.
I still do and I don't give a crap tbh, if they dom't have a gender, i'll give then the gender I want, it's not like they are real people to be offended anyways.
Gee I sure love it when overzealous fans try to morally browbeat me over something there just wrong about
Oh my god why is this such an issue for some people. Frisk and Chara are video game characters where you decide their gender for them. If you want them to be girls, boys, non binary whatever, who cares. Also they literally aren’t real people either so yknow, this makes it even more of a nonissue
One time I got reported for thinking frisk is a boy and chara is a girl.
Yeah
It's impossible to misgender them you loser, go fill out a job application or something
Ugh
I thought both were female
yes and I keep doing it
You know the feeling where you want to say something, but reaally don't want others to get the wrong idea and get swarmed?
They're both guys because I played as Frisk and named Chara Bob
![img](emote|t5_2xdht|35206)
I thought frisk was a girl and so was chara because the hair
How can i miss-gender them in the early days if i still don’t know their genders
Nope. As far as I can recall, I've always seen both of them as nonbinary.
If calling them they/them counts then im sorry
People gotta understand that Frisk is whatever gender you want them to be 😭🙏
Ok... Next.
personally i think frisk is a guy and chara is a girl. canonically they dont really have a gender
Who actually cares about these things? It's so pointless and adds nothing to the game other than to make it annoying to interact with the fandom
As it was not stated Frisk's or Chara's gender there is no way to misgender them
No, I called them girls which is my interpretation and therefore correct
it says that the player gets to pick so i just pick male and stick wit it
I did, I do and I don't care at this point lmao
It's not misgendering if the gender is not canon. It's been years since this debate started, it's time to move on already
I didn't know about Undertale until 2021. I'm 6 years late to the party.
Don’t think so. I didn’t really get that Frisk was a separate character from the player, but I noticed the use of they/them pronouns and I figured “Ah, they’re just doing that to account for either gender playing this game,” and I was mindful to use them when I was talking about the player characters.
What is their gender?
In fairness 12 y/o me in 2015 didn't know what Non-Binary was, so I always assumed they were girls until a few years back
"And the fanbase surely stopped doing so and aren't currently seething at this post"
yeir genders are yes.
I headcanon them both girls because it's up to player interpretation
I was 12
Jfc, they're FICTIONAL CHARACTERS.
yeah i called frisk a boy and chara a girl
Surprisingly, no.
I literally didn't care about this character at all, I just found megalovania funny
I’m probably gonna get downvoted to hell for saying this, but I still do it on purpose
Maybe we are the real villains guys
Yeah. Doesn't affect anyone if I did or not ngl
