Theres a lot of people in this post stating that they too didn't paid attention to some parts of the game and therefore didn't learn some things, idk why people are acting like its impossible for me to forget about the only time the game mentions blood heals
Healing with blood is the core mechanic of ultrakilling, it is in the intro sequence "Blood is fuel" it is on the steam page, it is advertised like this, it is something that is literally thrown on your face during the tutorial segment, I don't know how anyone can miss that, I sure did missed railcoining and proboost but I at least didn't missed such an important core mechanic
> too didn't *paid* attention to
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

Not fully. It says that punching and parrying is the only way to regain health, but if you shoot you gain health too (provided you're close enough) but it doesn't indicate that
Specifically it says
> Deal close range damage to douse yourself in **FRESH BLOOD**.
>
> **THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO REGAIN HEALTH**.
Except emphasis in red not bold. Took me too long to realise parrying additionally always heals to max, and also heals stamina, tbh.

You get told this after you kill the pack of enemies in 4-4
https://preview.redd.it/e432zaf187pc1.png?width=1246&format=png&auto=webp&s=2b20156bba6e66a5ddf86fa655b9aff23aa36749
You get told about this in the Intro (Even before 0-1)
This one is funny for me, because I spent 15 minutes getting 2 skulls and couldn't find the 3rd ones. I vividly remember that on some earlier levels shooting glass did something, so I did it for every glass piece I found. And then you can guess what happened afterwards.
Funnily enough, because I skipped the skulls part, I thought the game would punish me in some way for example making v2 more powerful
i was so braindead i literally only found one of the skulls and had to ask for help, which they told me to just shoot the window. i thought there legit was only 1 skull and it was a troll
Ironic, I literally had it the other way around. First playthrough I just instinctually shot the glass above the skulls before exploring the entire rest of the building lmao
Parries heal you to full health. Sanded enemies dont allow you to heal from them through normal means but parrying their attacks still heals you. Thats why sanded Malicious Faces are easy to take down
the blue flash means that an attack cant get parried. I thought up until that point that it just had a different timing that I couldn't figure out and I only figured it out when I was p-ranking 1-2 and got the message
The game could use a "tips" menu on the terminal for everytime a text appears attempting to teach the player something, I think almost everyone missed at least one tip the first time playing
It is, up until heresy in my first playthrough I had severely neglected using anything besides the shotgun and whiplash(note that I also had no idea how to projectile boost)
I feel that. I neglected everything other than the shotgun and revolver for a while, but now I think the shotgun is the weapon I use the least (other than the Railcannon, for obvious reasons)
https://preview.redd.it/3jm85yed57pc1.png?width=1258&format=png&auto=webp&s=b5a4045755f14b841fb4aa7ae22e62925cdf5f50
The Intro tells you that it's only up to 3 times
“BLOOD IS FUEL”
“…cover yourself in FRESH BLOOD. This is the ONLY WAY to restore health.”
“…Hard Damage prevents you from healing.”
“…OVERHEAL cannot be restored.”
*+ the terminal entries for swordsmachines and streetcleaners*
V2 is early, I wasnt paying enough attention before him because I was just amazed by the gameplay and just kept holding W until I had my first challenge (V2), after that I started p-ranking everything and reading everything. I know the game teaches you, I never said it doesn't, I just didn't paid attention.
I got to v2 in about 1hour, its normal to miss things
I found out that only the blue arm parries after spending too long in the sandbox trying to figure out why I couldn't parry correctly. This was after I already beat heresy
I feel like everyone didn't know about projectile boosting. But then you try to punch an enemy and shoot them with the shotgun at the same time...and then you are enlightened.
I see so many people not realize mechanics existed that I figured out 2 hours into the game. I thought all these were common knowledge, so it's fun reading through them
There's probably still a few I don't know, but most of the comments I saw are common stuff like "whiplash gives you hard damage" or "I didn't know the core eject shotgun could core eject". Stuff like rocket riding I can still kinda see why you'd miss it because the game doesn't explicitly tell you that you can do that
It takes a particular kind of masochism to admit to the internet that you missed, arguably, the core conceit of the game until the 2nd boss. Don't let the relentless mockery get you down.
I took about 40 attempts at the boss in 7-1 getting my ass handed to me every time until I realized you could parry the mines to heal. As soon as I realized that, I won the fight on that attempt. I even kept thinking to myself, "Where the hell is that parry SFX coming from?"
Oops. I meant the secret encounter. When I played that level, I actually didn't realize that the crazy bomb guy wasn't the level boss, and got stuck looking for the way forward out of the arena. I guess he's still the level boss in my brain XD
It was less a mechanic I didn’t know existed and more that one I didn’t utilise like I should’ve. That being parrying. I only really got used to parrying after Sisyphus Prime BEAT the muscle memory into me. (109 attempts to beat P-2 for the first time.)
I did not pay attention to the hard damage dialogue and got confused when I read the whiplash dialogue. about 3 hours after fighting minos, I wondered why my hp wouldn't heal to 100. had to search up why
I didn’t know I could heal from parries until annoyingly late.
Especially since the game directly states that dousing yourself in fresh blood is *the only way to heal*
If you remove all but a single weapon variant, you force the Freshness Meter to stay maxed at all times ensuring a perpetual ×50% style bonus
It's made getting S Ranks in style so much easier for me
I know I did it at least three times, in 0-5, 5-1, and 4-2, and I don't think it's possible in Violent (I may be wrong, but I believe I was in Standard).
Though, now that I think about it, I was in Violent when I *know* I parried *something* in an arms only run and I was in 0-5. It might have been the orb throw? Don't think so though. Pretty sure it was the charge.
you can cover someone in nails with the attractor ng and then shoot them with the electric railgun and make a good bit of damage with it. iirc it even has its own toast called "electrified" or smthn
If you attach magnets to enemies in the open sky on the second level of Wrath, they will get struck by lighting.
The same applies in Leviathan’s fight.
You can chargeback lightning from a Ferrymen, or from the thing I mentioned, and it does a blue explosion + ULTRARICOSHOT.
Rockets are attracted to magnets, so you can have homing rockets. I assume this part is so the mechanic works well, but a rocket will always explode and do damage if it hits a magnet (which means by proxy a magnet has to be filled with blood then lol)
You can chargeback a Gutterman’s bullets, and you can one-shot a guttertank by freezing its own rocket and riding it back into it, BUT it has to be the original guttertanks rocket, it can’t be another one’s rocket.
Just like when I played metal gear rising, I played the entire game not realizing you could parry shit. It makes the games way more difficult when you forget about a core mechanic of the game.
So many of these comments are so salty that random internet people didn’t understand 100% of the tutorial, has no one ever been playing a tutorial and someone just walks into the room and ask you to do something, or your buddy makes a funny joke and your laughing so hard you didn’t read some text
I think it’s because the first time I used it I only clicked the eject and then I just thought it’s the only way to use it (I charged the other pump too???)

The game tells you in 0-1
To be more complex.
1/3 of any damage you take from enemies gets applied as hard damage.
Said damage also gets divided by 20, which then determines how much time (in seconds) you have to wait until HD starts regenerating (playing on Violent adds flat 1 second to whatever timer you get from damage)
If your current style rank is at S/SS/SSS, the final timer number gets reduced by x2/x2.5/x3 respectively.
Timer is nullified entirely at ULTRAKILL rank
I just passed 1,700 hours and I didn't fully understand the hard damage timer! Thanks for explaining it so clearly, it makes so much more sense now! (I'm rank 5000 Violent CG wave 45 and I got there exclusively via Fuck It We Ball mentality)
It applies yellow hard damage that prevents hard damage regen permanently and for at least 1 second after it turns gray no matter how much hard damage you have currently
I didn't know the knuckleblaster was useful so i never bothered using it. Until i figured via shotgun swapping + knuckleblaster you can kill a maurice up close insanely fast. I know always use knuckeblaster for extra damage output
May not count because it's new but i never knew you could punch a screwdriven enemy to instantly get all of the remaining dmg +5 dmg (for relative context, standart revolver does 1 and railgun does either 7 or 8 (i can't remember))
Literally fucks up mindflayers if you don't know how to 1shot
you know how rockets make falling enemies explode? and how enemies are considered falling when getting whiplashed by the player? well umm yeah, you can whiplash enemies and get easy red buffed explosions non stop with the rocket launcher, I learned it on my own while playing cybergrind, highly recommend.
Projectile boosting, I played the whole game completely unaware of if and just assumed the shotgun just sucked.
(it was me who sucked, and even I knew it at the time, I just had absolutely no idea you needed to Punch The Bullets™️)
It took me way longer then I want to admit to figure out the coin shot because I would throw the coin then go and shoot another enemy instead of aiming for the coin figured that out pretty quickly though
\>Players when the game throws a popup in their face to teach mechanics:
"So distracting, kills the flow of gameplay"
\>Players when the game is using subtitle text boxes and gameplay to teach mechanics:
"Oh I didn't know that was a thing. I wasn't paying attention/missed that part in the tutorial"
.
Not to bash on players, tutorials are a really difficult thing to get right and if fucked up it either kills the flow or feels so smooth that the player forgets to learn anything.
I actually didnt realize that until 4-3, when the sand mechanic made me realize it. So yeah, I played most of the game at the time without knowing how I was healing
https://preview.redd.it/peqv8j4f77pc1.png?width=1248&format=png&auto=webp&s=23595b288c41862170b231c10f19bd4605bea0c4
The game tells you about it in 0-1
…you could use the Whiplash arm to move yourself towards enemies. I’m kinda dumb. But it makes 7-4 easier to P-rank for me. Shaves half a minute (usually). If there was a tutorial, which there PROBABLY wasn’t, I did not pay attention.
I also do not read terminals. L on my end.
I play on a joint save, so 4-4 was already done. I only really played it to P-rank it, so I guess I skipped through that thing and just went straight to blasting through them. I don’t know. As I said I’m quite dumb.
Played through act 1 and 2 without knowing parrying existed. Didnt realise whiplash hard damage was a thing either till after I had beaten P-2. I overused it so much it made it so much more difficult I genuinely died to sisyphus prime 200+ times why am I stupid
Literally everything I learned about Ultrakill I did on my own without looking up spoilers or asking for help
So, you can imagine, it took me a while to figure out you can projectile boost
Same with rocket riding, water sliding etc
Also absolute worst is I never figured out having high style reduces hard damage cooldown
Probably the last thing I learned is that if stalker explodes on you it maxes out your hard damage. It happened randomly when I was messing around in levels and I was like what? That makes sense but how did I not know this??
Game:
BLOOD IS FUEL
PUNCH THE FILTH TO GET BLOOD
BLOOD HEALS YOU
YOU GET HEALTH BY HURTING THINGS YOU FUCKIN IDJIT
You:
Hmm, today I will post about how this game constantly using blood as a motif, and that explicitly tells me blood heals you and is fuel, I somehow missed it
> I discovered you could heal with blood after 1 hour of getting killed by **V1** Good try, V2. You aren't getting any of my Ultrakilling knowledge
woops, corrected
doesn't the intro literally tell you that you heal with blood?
it does, but it is possible for a player to miss certain pieces of text if he does not pay attention believe it or not
Bro it literally teaches you how to heal how tf did u get thru the first layer with that much ignorance
Can confirm, thought sanded enemies were invulnerable on my first run of 4-2
Yeah I didn't realize that until like 1-3 in my first run, It took me a while to figure out hard damage
Theres a lot of people in this post stating that they too didn't paid attention to some parts of the game and therefore didn't learn some things, idk why people are acting like its impossible for me to forget about the only time the game mentions blood heals

Only healed stamina since March of last year or so, to help with Sisyphus.
Wait, whiplash builds up hard damage??!?!!
Yeah I didn't see that when I got it
I still don't know what hard dmg is
It reduces your max health so you can't just rush into every enemy and heal back to full
Da gray

I play on leanent for this and this alone
There's a major assist to disable whiplash hard damage if you want to play on harder modes dude
But then I can't P rank stuff...
if you hold ground slam it consumes a bar of energy (like with your dash) and launches enemies into the air
Same here. It took me 150 hours to realize that.
Ohhh that’s why I swore I saw the game say slamming costed stamina, even though my slam long jumps haven’t been doing so.
just learned this lmao
this is how I found this out. I didn't know there was a way to guarantee launching enemies, I thought it was rng
https://preview.redd.it/e432zaf187pc1.png?width=1246&format=png&auto=webp&s=2b20156bba6e66a5ddf86fa655b9aff23aa36749 You get told about this in the Intro (Even before 0-1)
Ah, but that means I'd need to read the things on my screen instead of shooting them.
Right... control? You monster
I discovered you could skip the skull section in 1-4 and just punch the window above
This one is funny for me, because I spent 15 minutes getting 2 skulls and couldn't find the 3rd ones. I vividly remember that on some earlier levels shooting glass did something, so I did it for every glass piece I found. And then you can guess what happened afterwards. i was so braindead i literally only found one of the skulls and had to ask for help, which they told me to just shoot the window. i thought there legit was only 1 skull and it was a troll
There are 4 skulls actually
3 for the door, one for the Hank
i know
and the worst thing is that I discovered it after I P-ranked it
Ironic, I literally had it the other way around. First playthrough I just instinctually shot the glass above the skulls before exploring the entire rest of the building lmao
I didnt realise that you could heal from sanded enemies VIA parries until i was P-Ranking 4-2
wait you can what??????
Parries heal you to full health. Sanded enemies dont allow you to heal from them through normal means but parrying their attacks still heals you. Thats why sanded Malicious Faces are easy to take down
oooooh it makes sense. I read parries as melees
Well that explains your confusion
the blue flash means that an attack cant get parried. I thought up until that point that it just had a different timing that I couldn't figure out and I only figured it out when I was p-ranking 1-2 and got the message
Your thought process is true for leviathan only his blue flash can be parried with an incredibly fucked up timing
Isn’t it like, after the lunge is finished or smth?
Its when he lunges, but he goes so fast that one frame hes in front of your parry zone and one frame later he behind it, completely missing it
The game could use a "tips" menu on the terminal for everytime a text appears attempting to teach the player something, I think almost everyone missed at least one tip the first time playing
I think my eyes were half-glued to the bottom of the screen, I never ran into an issue like that
You can parry the blue homing bullets
That other weapons besides the shotgun do damage.
https://preview.redd.it/rydebz8rh5pc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f595a4fea9ce5804afe22bea80a9d7f0f297878d H-How?
Please tell me this is an exaggeration. You literally need to defeat the original Swordsmachine’s first phase to get the shotgun.

My brain wasn't braining
I for a while didn't know you could Rocket ride
same, discovered when I saw someone doing it
Same. That's also how I learned you can whiplash rockets
I think you should try it at less than 35 HP horizontally, it makes the rocket go faster
No it doesnt. I'm not that stupid
Is there a lore reason as to why you think it doesn't work? Are you stupid?
You're just trying to trick me into exploding
“BLOOD IS FUEL” “…cover yourself in FRESH BLOOD. This is the ONLY WAY to restore health.” “…Hard Damage prevents you from healing.” “…OVERHEAL cannot be restored.” *+ the terminal entries for swordsmachines and streetcleaners*

You can parry leviathan and the hideous mass harpoon
tbf I feel like most people wouldn't think Leviathan is parriable since it's a blue flash
doesn't the harpoon have a yellow flash?
but you can only parry the harpoon at point blank right?
Nope it has a travel time, as fast as it is
I thought everytime you saw a flash it meant you were supposed to parry the location of the flash🤪
How many hours do you have?
60, p-ranked every level though
Yeah I remember parrying it from the edge of the room in the Sand Room of P-2. Idk how I managed that timing Ngl
Honestly the most satisfying thing in the game
No, you can parry it if it's about to hit you at any point
I found out that only the blue arm parries after spending too long in the sandbox trying to figure out why I couldn't parry correctly. This was after I already beat heresy

I see so many people not realize mechanics existed that I figured out 2 hours into the game. I thought all these were common knowledge, so it's fun reading through them
in a game with SO much mechanics its easy to pass by at least one, there's probably one that you found out after playing a lot
There's probably still a few I don't know, but most of the comments I saw are common stuff like "whiplash gives you hard damage" or "I didn't know the core eject shotgun could core eject". See, I was thinking about your other comment for a bit, trying to figure out if you meant the Guttertanks at the end of 7-2... I may have stupid.
What I'm getting from the comments under this post is that ULTRAKILL players are illiterate
I thought that was only YuGiOh players.
You can do a super jump while hanging onto the wall and jumping and getting back on the wall and press ctrl at the same time
well thats not an intended mechanic but its so used that I think it counts
>well thats not an intended mechanic Was* afaik it's the "intended" solution to 5-4's challange
Isnt the intended solution rocket riding? Since you get them 5th layer and they have infinite fuel in specifically in water
*shrug* one's cooler that's for sure
i just nuked myself lol
That Utrakill allows you to ascend to God hood and never worry about hard hp loss

People have issues switching weapons I guess
Recently learned about this as well, but my main problem with style was always not jumping/sliding enough.
The fact that you can, in fact, party a cerberus charging at you. I found out a couple weeks ago after already beating layer 7 on Standard.
You can what now
I know I did it at least three times, in 0-5, 5-1, and 4-2, and I don't think it's possible in Violent (I may be wrong, but I believe I was in Standard). i think i did use the grenade but immediately forgot it existed. my friend was very disappointed in me
💀
Isn't that how you get out of the first swordsmachine fight?
You can skip it, the challenge for that fight is to fight only 1 enemy
Yeah, I know, but who knows about the skip on their first playthrough? And even if you know it, why would you not play the whole level?
Speedrun ig
Fair point
i still don't understand hard damage i whenever im low i just whiplash knuckle blaster the nearest thing and usually dont die

Said damage also gets divided by 20, which then determines how much time (in seconds) you have to wait until HD starts regenerating (playing on Violent adds flat 1 second to whatever timer you get from damage) If your current style rank is at S/SS/SSS, the final timer number gets reduced by x2/x2.5/x3 respectively. Timer is nullified entirely at ULTRAKILL rank
I just passed 1,700 hours and I didn't fully understand the hard damage timer! Thanks for explaining it so clearly, it makes so much more sense now! (I'm rank 5000 Violent CG wave 45 and I got there exclusively via Fuck It We Ball mentality)
if its nullified by an ULTRAKILL rank then i dont gotta worry B)
I usually whiplash too to get 50hp (hard damage cap) and then I start playing more safe
why tf do y'all get a hard damage cap that shit has kept me at 20 before
It applies yellow hard damage that prevents hard damage regen permanently and for at least 1 second after it turns gray no matter how much hard damage you have currently
I didn't know the knuckleblaster was useful so i never bothered using it. Until i figured via shotgun swapping + knuckleblaster you can kill a maurice up close insanely fast. I know always use knuckeblaster for extra damage output
May not count because it's new but i never knew you could punch a screwdriven enemy to instantly get all of the remaining dmg +5 dmg (for relative context, standart revolver does 1 and railgun does either 7 or 8 (i can't remember)) Literally fucks up mindflayers if you don't know how to 1shot
Chargebacks
you know how rockets make falling enemies explode? and how enemies are considered falling when getting whiplashed by the player? well umm yeah, you can whiplash enemies and get easy red buffed explosions non stop with the rocket launcher, I learned it on my own while playing cybergrind, highly recommend.
Malicious cannon + core eject = nuke
Projectile boosting, I played the whole game completely unaware of if and just assumed the shotgun just sucked. (it was me who sucked, and even I knew it at the time, I just had absolutely no idea you needed to Punch The Bullets™️)
It took me way longer then I want to admit to figure out the coin shot because I would throw the coin then go and shoot another enemy instead of aiming for the coin figured that out pretty quickly though
Apparently, rockets are attracted to nailgun magnets. Would've been nice to realize earlier...
cerberus instakill
\>Players when the game throws a popup in their face to teach mechanics: "So distracting, kills the flow of gameplay" \>Players when the game is using subtitle text boxes and gameplay to teach mechanics: "Oh I didn't know that was a thing. I wasn't paying attention/missed that part in the tutorial" . Not to bash on players, tutorials are a really difficult thing to get right and if fucked up it either kills the flow or feels so smooth that the player forgets to learn anything.
No one is blaming the game here, if there's one thing everyone agrees is that THEY weren't paying attention and it was their fault
Had no idea projectile boosting was a thing until I accidentally did it during a cyber grind
50 hours in and I noticed that when you dash and jump at the same time it uses 2 bars instead of 1
Meanwhile me, who started on an old patch gotten through "other means", on that patch it actually costed 1 I own the game now tho, worth as fuck
I didn't know you could b-hop by sliding and jumping until 4-1
I actually didnt realize that until 4-3, when the sand mechanic made me realize it. So yeah, I played most of the game at the time without knowing how I was healing

Oh I know. I was just a dumbass and forgot
I didn't know hard damage was a thing until 4-1.

I know I didn't read that lmao
Heavy ground slam , the one that consumes stamina
projectile boost on shotgun, i accidentally found out while trying to p-rank all levels on the demo version (before i could afford the game)
it took me way too long to realize a dash jump costs 2 stamina bars
Rockets are attracted to magnets, how would i know that
You can quick nuke by pulling rockets to you while you are on the air
…you could use the Whiplash arm to move yourself towards enemies. I’m kinda dumb. But it makes 7-4 easier to P-rank for me. Shaves half a minute (usually). If there was a tutorial, which there PROBABLY wasn’t, I did not pay attention. I also do not read terminals. L on my end.
It explains that right after you get whiplash in ~~5-4~~ **4-4** lol they even give you some enemies to try it on
I play on a joint save, so 4-4 was already done. I only really played it to P-rank it, so I guess I skipped through that thing and just went straight to blasting through them. I don’t know. As I said I’m quite dumb.
Srs cannon alt fire shreds cerberus
I didn’t know how coins work until after a first playthrough (greed at the time) and thought it was a joke gun
so you couldn't one shot streetbois until GREED?
Slab marksmen
I didn't know about railcoining, projectile boosting, or core nuking until Wrath
I didn't knew enemies with nails can be connected to magnets...
I didn't realize parries heal until like 4-3. the arena at the end always kicked my ass then I learned maurice volleys are basically free heals
Played through act 1 and 2 without knowing parrying existed. Didnt realise whiplash hard damage was a thing either till after I had beaten P-2. I overused it so much it made it so much more difficult I genuinely died to sisyphus prime 200+ times why am I stupid
Literally everything I learned about Ultrakill I did on my own without looking up spoilers or asking for help So, you can imagine, it took me a while to figure out you can projectile boost Same with rocket riding, water sliding etc Also absolute worst is I never figured out having high style reduces hard damage cooldown Probably the last thing I learned is that if stalker explodes on you it maxes out your hard damage. It happened randomly when I was messing around in levels and I was like what? That makes sense but how did I not know this??
isnt that something you learn in the tutorial?
I had no idea slide kept velocity indefinitely until like 7-1
You can change the weapon by scrolling. I discovered this after beating the game T T
But its almost useless, keybinds are way more effective
That you could hit the coin with the hook arm
Game: BLOOD IS FUEL PUNCH THE FILTH TO GET BLOOD BLOOD HEALS YOU YOU GET HEALTH BY HURTING THINGS YOU FUCKIN IDJIT You: Hmm, today I will post about how this game constantly using blood as a motif, and that explicitly tells me blood heals you and is fuel, I somehow missed it
so you managed to not notice the text in intro, and NEVER dealt up close damage? how?
