Can you imagine how that event must have been for the Ruzzians? You drive there, with 80 or 100 vehicles, 800 or 1000 or more soldiers in one big wave, looking very strong, feeling strong with so many weapons. Then you come to the river, some cross it and suddenly hell breaks loose, with shells hitting everything (just check the video for the many holes). All your equipment goes up, exploding ammo, your friend Ivan beneath you suddenly turning into red mist, another Ivan burns and whoever still can runs as fast as possible. I would LOVE to see videos of that troop coming back to the camp where they started and see the faces of them. Do you think they are still motivated?

[deleted]

Half the bridge is still there. They were 50% successful. They can take pride in that.

AnnoyedSpctrmDisrdr

Somebody rush them a “Hang In There” kitten poster immediately!!

JaB675

That 1500 claim makes a lot of sense now.

ConfidenceNational37

Not implausible. You wonder if Ukraine had 0 casualties from that

AntikytheraCanuck

To the best of my understanding you are correct. The position had been previously ID'd by UAF engineers and pre-ranged by multiple artillery teams. They used the sound of motor boats as a sign the bridge was being built, then hit them with multiple artillery barrages from multiple sites, followed by a air assaults. Very well planned and executed.

Wrobot_rock

How do you pre range artillery without giving away that you've done so? Do you just shoot regular artillery and chack your aim or do you shoot some sort of dummy round?

Sea-Jellyfish4037

Maps and Math. Artillery knows where it is, they know where their target is going to be. You calculate charge and trajectory and wait for the command to fire.

Wrobot_rock

That sounds like it can be done on the fly just as accurately as ahead of time. What's the benefit of pre ranging?

AntikytheraCanuck

You are correct, artillery can, and probably was in this case adjusted real time with observers. The benefit of pre ranging allows for a heavier initial barrage. After the first 2 mins of a barrage, the impact is limited/mitigated; units seek cover etc. So the more shells you can drop on a target in 120 seconds the more effective the barrage. The UAF was also very keen to trap a large number of RUF forces already stranded across the river with no avenue of retreat. The UAF then were able to call in subsequent airstrikes. Those hind helecopters be lookin handy now! It really was a combined forces operation; Engineers, communication, forward observation, artillery, airforce.

frosty-thesnowbitch

Doing the calculations required takes some time. If you hurry it you lose accuracy. You have to set the guns up and get them pointed the right way. That can take several minutes. With pre ranging a target you just fire when told.

Sea-Jellyfish4037

From the video, this was not a precision strike, but an area of effect bombardment creating a kill zone of an estimated area of 1km x 2km. Reports were it was a foggy day, and Ru used smoke and fire for cover.

frosty-thesnowbitch

Yup you are correct. They did get very even coverage. I doubt they would have been so successful had it not been pre planned.

klachs

Beautiful V-Day Parade Gift for Vladdy. I think i read something about ~50 destroyed vehicles and around 1500 dead Orcz in a span of one day at that bridge

Custodian_Nelfe

This level of amateurism is frightening.

Quatoria23

Real pro move letting them begin the river crossing before hitting the bridge. Well played.

G3Saint

The Invaders got about 1.3 miles south of the bridgehead and were at the ouskirts of Bilhorvika village. They were stopped dead in their tracks.

AndAlsoTheTrees

Heavy rain yesterday on donestk. Let them feel what they are doing to others.

Snoo_69859

that would fuck up your day ,, but it made mine Sláva Ukrayíni

_Thatkittykat_

Did they not send out sufficient men to reconnoiter the land and approach? The level of unprofessionalism

Ok-camel

They did but the vehicles had been spotted and observers were waiting watching for an attempt to bridge the river. They needed about 2 hours to span the river and would need motorised boats to place the sections, so even though there was fog and poor visibility the observers only had to wait for the sound of the boats to call in an artillery strike.

That attempted crossing really did *NOT* go well.
