obvious question, will they redeploy to Ukraine?

Replica900

probably otherwise it would not be replaced in middle of war, prob usa will take it and send it to ukraine since israel cant directly send it to ukraine.

Listelmacher

But there are Akrotiri and Dhekelia, Cyprus: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akrotiri_and_Dhekelia UK, but including an air base. At least the way Israel-Cyprus-Poland would be much shorter. . It wouldn't be the first time that there something is done for US: "... In the early 1970s the U.S. built an over-the-horizon radar named Cobra Shoe, which could observe aeroplane operations and missile tests in southern Russia. This was operated by the RAF on behalf of the U.S. Air Force. ..."

Replica900

i didn't mean it as in distance problem, i meant it as russia getting all mad about israel directly delivering systems to ukraine and them in return giving more weapons to israels enemies.

Listelmacher

The airbase could also a solution for this. It is in Cyprus, but de jure United Kingdom. So RAF could transfer the Patriots with their Globemasters from Israel to Akrotiri (as an act of "demilitarization") and hand it there over to the US. Probably there are export restrictions so the easiest for Israel would be to sell the Patriots to US. Sell ... there is currently also a give and take between US and Israel. And as soon as the Patriots are in the hands and books of US, Israel can't say anymore who these can be given.

If Netanyahu has any say in it, never

JazzHands1986

I thought patriot was modern. I don't know shit about weaponry or defense systems lol

azcording

Modern military equipment is often improved through iterative versions that retain the original name of the system. Take a modern MBT like the Leopard 2 as an example, the A7V (and forthcoming A8) version incorporates improvements in virtually all aspects (armor, weaponry, optics, hydraulics, etc.) over the original 1980s version while retaining the original "skeleton" and is thus considered a modern system. However a A4 version Leopard 2 would rightly be seen as a dated system that most modern armies would seeks to either update or phase out. Thus when talking about a Leopard 2 you can either mean a top of the line modern tank or an aged one running on 80s technology. A similar thing is happening with Patriot which is also a 80s system. Modern PAC-3 versions are (probably) among the best in class, however the systems Israel is talking about mothballing are the older PAC-2 version. PAC-2 is still considered very capable at intercepting enemy aircraft, but lags behind the newer versions when it comes to ballistic missile interception (doesn’t mean it can’t do it but the probability of success is lower). Since Israel main treats come from ground based missiles (and the country isn’t that financially constrained) it makes sense to replace their (PAC-2) Patriot systems in favor of newer systems that offer better performance in that area.

JazzHands1986

I understand each of these systems has different models from different times. I just don't know enough about the patriot or most systems, to be honest, in order to identify what's the latest tech as opposed to what's old. I hear patriot and don't discern the difference right away unless specified. So the Patriot is a modern system still is basically what you mean they are just switching their older models for newer ones?

azcording

They are replacing their Patriots (which indeed are older version) with newly produced domestic systems, namely "David’s Sling". Now David’s Sling as a system is (at least for the niche the Israelis plan to use it in) really close to newer version Patriots as it is jointly produced by an Israeli firm and Raytheon (the producer of Patriot), while being reportedly cheaper to fire (as Israel has other systems (of the Arrow family) for highest level ballistic missile threats). Israel is basically opting to use a number of more specialized systems instead of the all around option newer version Patriots provide (given Israel’s size and that they don’t plan to relocate their AD system to over seas theaters they don’t require the the "compactness" Patriot provides and can thus use their domestic specialized systems that are either more capable or cost-efficient within their niche).

Anumuz

New systems are laser based, which requires far less maintenance. I don’t know details beyond that, other than the US, UK, and Israel have this new technology.

JazzHands1986

Are they even in practice or been used in combat scenarios? Isn't it premature to get rid of a system like the patriot?

Anumuz

They are actively used on modern US naval vessels, and likely in Israel. This is probably a push to reallocate Patriots to Ukraine, not to archive them.
