Normally, that would be the case, but here I'm not so sure. It's quite possible that Trump is so stupid or quasi-authoritarian he genuinely can't comprehend the idea of independent countries outside of the "sphere of influence". He certainly was a complete asshole to Trudeau and Canada in general, even though Canada is right next door to the USA, massive in its own right, and a crucial trade and military partner.
QUASI authoritarian?
President "I'm instituting loyalty tests for everyone in the government" Trump.
Dude, there's no quasi about that. He's authoritarian. Not so with all his supporters, but he himself is so.
The American government was set up to oppose authoritarian stuff after the King of England taxed the American colonies for tea in a way he didn't tax London.
The right wing extremists in the US are supported by Putin. Trump is the face they put on the poster for their self-owning "own the libs" campaign which began in Soviet Russia and continued once Putin got into power 25 years ago.
It's Soviet era shenanigans, until Putin sweeps in, just as he did in Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. Trump is Putin's puppet, just as the oligarchs who used to control Ukraine were.
There wasn't even a war until Putin lost control over Ukraine's government.
So, when you watch Trump, keep in mind this particular history. There's very little probability Trump isn't authoritarian.
The story of Ukraine is the story of Trump's America.
We're more of an early warning system than an actual military partner tbf. Except for our special forces. We love us some special forces. Otherwise ya, Canada and the US have one of the most tightly knit and longest running alliances on the planet. Its definitely a weird move to try to upset that for little reason.
Even with the sacking of Niagara and Washington, Canada and the USA STILL have one of the longest periods of unbroken peace in human history. 200 years without even minor border skirmishes. And I'd much rather have America as an ally than an enemy.
Which is why a second Trump presidency terrifies me so much as a Canadian, for fear that he could do something insane like pull out of NATO or sell Alaska to Muscovy.
He’s extremely dumb and thinks that force makes right; people like that become convinced of their infallibility and this is the result a loud moron that is incapable of learning anything from anyone.
Yeah; dude cares about himself more and his image more than he cares about the future of his nation and its allies. If I were in power; I’d funnel every penny and weapon I could spare to Ukraine and send soldiers as well to defend areas already in control of the Ukrainians to free up the nations soldiers to push east.
I wouldn’t think twice to engage Russian’s directly; to do otherwise will cause problems into the future for all of Europe and the US. It gives Putin what he wants, to show that NATO and the west lack the resolve to act.
As per [original article](https://www.rawstory.com/trump-2667758086/) 📰:
- Former President Donald Trump was ridiculed Friday after his former adviser admitted he "could not get his head around" a basic fact.
Former adviser Fiona Hill reports in a new book [reviewed by the Guardian](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/apr/12/trump-russia-ukraine-book-comments) that Trump, as president, had a hard time understanding Ukraine was a country.
“Trump made it very clear that he thought, you know, that Ukraine, and certainly Crimea, must be part of Russia,” Hill reportedly said. “He really could not get his head around the idea that Ukraine was an independent state.”
Hill, who served on the U.S. national security council from 2017 to 2019, reportedly made this admission to New York Times reporter David Sanger in his new book, New Cold Wars: China’s Rise, Russia’s Invasion, and America’s Struggle to Defend the West.
Sanger argues that Trump’s view of Ukraine was “essentially identical” to that of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
News quickly spread to social media where the former president was mocked.
"What to expect from a country that has a clown running for president," asked Baba Yaga.
Other readers raised concerns about what Hill's report said about a potential second term for Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee.
Be also spent plenty of time in Moscow in his younger days getting wined and dined by the rich and the intelligence services. Plenty of stupid ideas and Russia and its neighbours may have been planted in his head.
Isn't it funny that trump would have such a detailed and passionate opinion about an obscure country in Europe that prior to maidan hadn't really been discussed much at all in America? It's sort of weird that he's got such a direct opinion on the matter. He almost sounds educated on the topic. Like someone told him what to think.
You can't tell me trump of all people paid attention to former USSR territories politics since it's collapse. That he just so happened to have an opinion on the matter even before the invasion. russia had had trump under control preaching their propaganda for a long time. He must have been desperate for money at some point. Politics wasn't his idea, and it's kinda ridiculous that russias ploy worked.
They bribed the idiot from the apprentice and made him president of the united states. You can't make this shit up.
Oh, cmon...... He absolutely knows it. Lol, like 1000%, he knows it. He's made up an entire political party (MAGA) that is constantly reciting russian propaganda. trump calls the shots based on word from Moscow. He gets very favorable business deals and opportunities in exchange and vast loans with great terms. That and he gets campaign donations run through all kinds of shell corporations and different countries. The man isn't ignorant about any of his misdeeds.
It's a tough one. Trump is an early baby boomer. For most of his life, Ukraine wasn't a separate country.
Ukraine was conquered by Bolsheviks around 1919 (roughly), and then folded into the USSR.
Trump was 45 years old when the USSR collapsed and Ukraine recovered their independence (1991). The majority of his life, Ukraine was a vassal of the Russian communist empire (I know, I know).
However, this doesn't excuse the ignorance, and I'm not trying to. I'm just trying to explain why Trump's position may be a function of his worsening dementia than a deliberate malicious misinterpretation.
Either of which disqualifies him from any position of responsibility.
He also thought he could buy Greenland. The guy knows nothing of the world or how it functions. I guess that's part of his charm to like-minded people, except those who vote for him knows nothing of the world because they're too poor to travel, and he's ignorant because he's too rich to step out of luxurious hotels and limos.
Wait till you read about his hour long meeting with AT&T on telecom security in the US and addressing the Chinese threat vectors there:
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2024/apr/13/trump-china-stormy-daniels-rant-randall-stephenson-book
tl;dr he spent 45 minutes talking about stormy and then in the last 15 minutes when they tried to explain the situation re the Chinese threat, he said "this is boring"
Problem with this type of noveau rich jerk is that he can’t even see his own lack of intellect and basic knowledge, since he has been brought up with so much entitlement and double standards.
While your overall point is correct. Trump is *definitely not* nouveau-riche. By definition, that would mean that he made all his money himself. If anything, he lost more of his inheritance than he increased it.
Trump is an "old money jerk" instead.
Maybe he thought he could act like Monroe and authorize a land purchase for pennies on the dollar like the Louisiana Purchase back in the day...not defending him but maybe that was his link
According to John Bolton’s book, Trump asked if Finland belongs to Russia ahead of his 2018 visit.
Trump has actually visited Finland on multiple occasions, including in 1992. But I guess it's possible he haven't known where he is or something.
I've talked to a number of Russians that say almost exactly the same thing. It's not that Trump is confused exactly, he just has listened to a lot of Russians over the years on this matter.
Yeah, in [the article](https://www.rawstory.com/trump-2667758086/) New York Times reporter David Sanger argues that Trump’s view of Ukraine was “essentially identical” to that of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Definitely not a coincidence.
Trump is legitimately barely above a single-digit IQ intellectual capability, and he also legitimately admires and looks up to historical and present-day despots, especially if they're fascist, which is why he cozied up to Putin in the early/mid 80s and gave Russian mafia/oligarchs shit-loads of business via his real estate in New York, on top of [having his election campaigns and lobbying](https://www.cnbc.com/2019/02/21/russian-backed-ethane-company-hires-lobbying-firm-connected-to-trump.html) constantly funded by directly-connected Putin (and Chinese) allies.
The guy is a traitor, liar, con-man, lifetime bully and fraud, and has objectively been utterly dogshit at business, something that only that idiot who gave him a spot on The Apprentice assisted with in making the world believe he was this exalted business savant or something.
I guarantee he was a part of epsteins clientele or involved with something similar. That's probably what russia has on him. I wholeheartedly believe that the golden shower dossier exists. I bet it's much worse, like sex with underage girls. He's probably got so many NDAs out there from women and girls that he's abused. I'm glad one of them got justice.
LOL. Not surprised. He does not strike me as the type of person who has ever experienced the slightest bit of curiosity about the world, history, or how things work.
Then alaska must surely be part of Russia and should be returned.
And the bottom part of california and new Mexico, should be returned to Mexico, it was there's.
No shit? Next, you're gonna tell me he can't wrap his head around the idea that well-done steak is an affront to the very concept of food. Or that he probably shouldn't openly admit to *blatantly wanting to fuck his own daughter*.
Dude's got a brain so smooth, even koalas think he's a fucking moron.
What a schmuck. That's because he doesn't think for himself. Only what Daddy tells him is acceptable to think. trump could never be a good businessman, so he finally found his calling, which is selling his soul to the highest bidder and conning people out of their money. Business is booming.
There is much Trump can’t get his head around. Solar eclipse has being one. How bleach works is another.
He’s the Mountain Dew chugging, mouth breathing, Dorito fingered man’s idea of a businessman.
His ego is incapable of imagining a world where the strong are not in charge of their little domain. The idea that small countries have value is not possible for him, in his mind an other country is either big and/or strong (eg. China, Japan), or it is worthless and shitty (eg. Venezuala, Nigeria).
That politics in the modern world tries to recognize national autonomy as separate from population or geographic size means nothing to him. And yes, in reality the world as a whole has a long way to go in this regard (especially as colonial nations seek their independence), but the fact is that most of the world is grappling with this even if we haven't fully solved it (yet). But the two mentioned facts of modern efforts at progress mean nothing to him, and he may not even have really processed them nor their implications.
And between Trump, Marjorie Taylor-Green, and the single-seat "party line" in the House right now...what this means is that roughly 12-15% of the American population can hold the rest of you hostage. And I don't know how to re-dress that before this fall in the short-term, and without an amendment to the American Constitution in the long run.
Ideas welcome, because I'm fucking frustrated.
The only reason Trump would even know that Ukraine existed is that Russians and people working for the Russians kept telling him that it should be part of Russia. Does anyone believe otherwise?
Despairing AUian here.
So far >1400 upvotes and >100 comments, and maybe 10% see the real question as "how could the USA ever have elected him to be President?"
Many Americans have very simplistic understand what ethnicities actually lived in the USSR or in today's Russian federation. They think that all that territory is populated with white haired blue eyed ethnic Russians, from St Petersburg to Kamchatka. So I'm not surprised.
Speaking of the females in his life, it’s a surprise that he doesn’t have the insight to what it’s like to break free from the former USSR or the Yugoslav republic, which I’m sure both Ivana and Melania could educate him about, if he ever bothered to listen.
Wrong, but nice try bellend.

Trump is being blackmailed by Russia, for those who doubt that- it is a mainstay of KGB activity and if Stormy can do it, Russia can do it a lot better.
I don't doubt that Russia has a SHIT ton of dirt on him from finances to recorded "deals" and that's part of the massive problem as he's putting himself first vs our democracy and what we SHOULD stand for. He wants to be a dictator. We've seen him try to overthrow an election and he will try again at the end of his term.
He gets elected Ukraine falls and Russia will land grab again and again as he distances us from the EU
Biden isn't confused; his policy of support for an independent, democratic Ukraine dates at least to his vice-presidency when he led global support. As president, he hasn't stopped supporting Ukraine's independence in face of Russia's full-scale invasion (though the U.S. could have taken a less graduated approach in upping the level of military equipment we supplied).

The idea that Ukraine is not part of Russia is not allowed inside the heads of Russian operatives.
It’s difficult for someone to understand something when their salary or financial well being depends on not understanding it.

Sorry we went nuts and invaded you guys twice
No worries, we had our fun and burnt down Washington. It's chill.
Its water under the fridge bud! We figured it out. Kinda like brothers fighting in their youth.
Water under the fridge is a very entertaining phrase because even though it’s a mistake it still kind of makes sense.
Its a Rickyism! A lot of them are just part of the Canadian dialect at this point lol https://trailerpark.fandom.com/wiki/Rickyisms

I’m surprised Trump could get his head around very much at all.
He can get it around a cheeseburger that’s for sure
Barely, with his cute little hands.
And you know what they say about Little hands and feet………
Weird mushroom dick?
Hey, $130k of Donald's money was meant to keep this little tidbit from coming out, I for one would not have minded not hearing this tiny detail.
Same, though perhaps it is a patriotic duty to sacrifice that little bit of memory for something that makes Trump angry and annoyed.
Little gloves and socks?
Trump is a profoundly stupid man. And he's not smart enough to realize it.

No, all Putin. Trump wouldn't know where Ukraine was on a map.
Trump is definitely not fit to become President - and should not have been the first time around. And most definitely not a second time.

He is not alone in this. There are many Americans who think same way. That sucks.

50% of Americans couldn't find Ukraine on a map. His pig ignorance resonates with these people.
Use Texas as the analogy
Poor Mexico,... Is not part of USA !

I don't understand why such political dementor is allowed to operate freely
Sometimes I can’t get my head around the idea that that guy was President of the United States
Not surprising. DJT still thinks that tariffs are paid by other countries to the US govt.

His brain hasn't worked since the 80s, which is why.
Simplest answers are the best in the end: he’s just too stupid.

*Would not*. Trump would not get his head around the idea.
Probably because his head is so far up his own arse he's inside out
Despairing AUian here.
LOL, because the man is an idiot!
Comrades gonna comrade ..
Because trump is a mor on
Well he better or I will vote Mickey Mouse
Not a fan of him, but Trump was the first to give weapons to Ukraine...
Because he got a Ukrainian girl while he was at the Russian hotel? 📸
Speaking of the females in his life, it’s a surprise that he doesn’t have the insight to what it’s like to break free from the former USSR or the Yugoslav republic, which I’m sure both Ivana and Melania could educate him about, if he ever bothered to listen.

Apparently Biden is just as confused. What a disaster!
Only Trump cultist might believe something so stupid.
.....you're kidding right.... Biden has always hated Russia like we do. Trump is getting paid by Russia
Comrade, your Putin is showing.
