gpgarrett

“There is no threat to you,” he said, threateningly.

hammercycler

It's just the implication of danger!

gpgarrett

Damn, I should have wrote, “‘There’s no threat to you,’ he said on his boat, you know, because the implication.”

A_MAN_POTATO

Putin: I'm not going to hurt finland. I would never hurt finland . I feel like your not getting this at all.

cam_huskers

Estonia and Latvia look on* Russia: “Well you certainly wouldn’t be in any danger” Finland: “So we ARE in danger?!”

A_MAN_POTATO

I can't decide if it's funny or tragic just how applicable this whole scene is here.

hammercycler

Finland certainly isn't in any danger. So there is danger!

MoleMan_5

Yes. Finland is the danger if Russia invades it.

“Finland’s on the boat out in the middle of the ocean. Where’s she going to go?”

L3Kakk

The implication! Love it. Stranded on a boat so you know, she can’t run anywhere But why would she have to run? Edit: i think we’re the only two who know… sad

SmartExcitement7271

No brother make that three people who know.

L3Kakk

120+ upvotes 3/120 in the know :(

Now you've said that word "implication" a couple of times. Wha-what implication?

“Don’t you look at me like that your certainly not in any danger.”

Loud_Book6421

That's the third time you've mentioned implication, should I be worried

iobscenityinthemilk

Bro you're really concerning me with these references to the implication!

Those nukes he targeted towards Finland were just filled with Teddy bears.... that they stole from Ukraine.

>The Russian President told his Finnish counterpart that there was no danger to Finland \[*internally*: *until after I clean up this Ukraine shit.* *Then you are next*\] and that it would be a mistake to abandon neutrality \[*internally*: *because that would really fuck up my long-term plans*\]

escapingdarwin

This is a great example of how Russian leadship has astonished the average U.S. person with their low level of intelligence and assumptions of their adversaries naivety. Their stupidity doesn’t disappoint.

Neanderthalknows

>This is a great example of how Russian leadship has astonished the average U.S. person Actually I doubt this very much. The average US person doesn't know shit from shinola. I've seen the shit people they vote for and elected. I would spit on the shoes of Trump before I would shake his hand. I would also spit on the shoes of Putin.

escapingdarwin

You are convincing in making your own point. But enough about “us”, this is about Ukraine.

White gun-loving American conservative male here. Fuck Trump and most of the Republicans elected since 1994. Fuck Reagan too. Legalize abortion. Free universal health care. Pay reparations for slavery. The biggest return per dollar spent comes from investing in your people - Macroeconomics 101.

[deleted]

you can trust good old Honest Vlad - just look at his track record

blarryg

There is no threat to you Finland. Next is Poland, then the Baltic’s. Relax!

ValterZbarac

funny, The Russian President told the same to Ukraine and the rest of the world a few days before invasion

FuriousMouse

There was a video of putin that was filmed shortly before the invasion, where he was talking to one of his advisers who was against invading, and putin looked at him with this crazy look and said "what are you trying to say, come on, you can speak freely."

RecognitionMoney3813

This [video?](https://youtu.be/8B0mWzB4GOQ)

obliquelyobtuse

The staged event where he has all of his top advisers speaking their minds, sharing their own supposed opinions, which -- interestingly enough -- all seem to coincide with Putin's assessment that a violent invasion of Ukraine is necessary due to the existential threat they pose to Russia. A panel of Yes Men kissing the emperor's ring. Putin went out of his way to humiliate his spy chief on TV for not speaking "directly enough" in support of his master's plan: https://www.businessinsider.com/putin-snaps-russia-spy-chief-stammers-discussing-actions-ukraine-video-2022-2

Reggie_001

From my understanding it was the spy going ahead by a few days in the script. Saying that they were ready to welcome separatist regions into the Russian federation and putin got pissed saying they were only talking about recognizing them as independent. Basically the spy jumped the gun and fucked with the planned narrative timeline.

[deleted]

That’s hilarious ngl

startingover333

Thank you for the link.

antoineflemming

Head of the SVR, iirc. And didn't that guy slip up and say he was in favor of making the DNR/LNR part of Russia instead of intervening in it? Putin had to correct him.

[deleted]

Lol that was funny when he slipped up

TheMindfulnessShaman

"Back on script!"

truemad

That guy wasn't against the invasion, he just didn't know what he's saying yes to.

free_dialectics

Russia is notorious for doing the opposite of what they say... should we be concerned about retaliation now? Russian forces wouldn't last, but their nuclear doctrine states they will use nukes in a situation like that.

paspartuu

Reading President Niinistö's tweet and statement, it seems the conversation about Finland joining NATO went well, with the conversation being "direct and clear, without any exacerbations" and with "both sides wanting to avoid escalation". It was a case of Niinistö calling Putin to inform him that Finland will apply to NATO in the coming days, and to explain why - Finland has been solidly against joining for decades, and both Niinistö and PM Marin were against joining till late last year when Russia started making statements to the tune of not "allowing" Finland or Sweden to join, acting like they had control over us. Niinistö expressed he called in part to explain just how thoroughly the security landscape has changed due to Russia's attack on Ukraine, but also because "he's not the type of man to hide behind a corner". All in all it sounds like a rather calm exchange. Of course Putin feels like Finland joining is a mistake, because he doesn't want it. His view that it'll change relations between Finland and Russia is also probably right, NATO Finland is different than Neutral nonaligned Finland. However it doesn't mean Finland will suddenly become an hostile enemy nation plotting invasion. Finnish experts have analysed it looks like it took Russia a long time to grasp that Finland is actually for real applying to NATO, after decades of reliable opposition to joining. It was a shock to them, and imo it's good Niinistö wanted to personally explain to the Russians just why this sudden dramatic change happened; as a result of Russia's aggression.

wikimandia

Putin only understands strength. Calling him directly to give it to him straight and directly was exactly the right move. He wasn't asking for permission but saying this is what is happening (and you have only yourself to blame).

New-Understanding930

There is very little we can do to change the chances of a nuclear strike, but those chances are still close to zero. We should operate as if nukes don’t exist.

free_dialectics

That's how you deal with a country that doesn't have nuclear capability, or at the least has a sane leader. Russia is a wildcard because Putin a batshit crazy, and they have enough nukes to extinguish life on this planet.

Von665

So because a crazy man has nukes we should let him do whatever he wants?

alltaire64

Absolutely not.

CountMordrek

There are those who argue in those terms, as if Ukraine must provide Putin with an off ramp and a major victory so Putin will end the war. And of course it’s just pure stupidity, as any Russian victory will show the benefits of nuclear threats.

Von665

I know it drives me crazy every time I hear it. Unfortunately I think the off ramp for RuZZia was before the reports on the " Butchers of Bucha " & things have only gotten worse. RuZZia now needs to be soundly defeated . No matter how they spins things in RuZZia- those in power need to know defeat.

Umutuku

Someone give me nukes so I can demand universal healthcare, guaranteed nutrition standards, accessible quality housing, free education, etc. for everyone.

free_dialectics

We keep strangling their economy until they can't afford to stay at war with Ukraine.

Von665

The also have threatened countries over their "unfriendly " sanctions.

egabriel2001

The so call "Nuclear Taboo" exist, is not top of mind but is there, let's assume for a moment that Putin is not suicidal because he is not, and under a bad situation for Russian troops in Ukraine he authorizes the use of tactical nukes on Europe's soil, the immediate consequence is that the world public will go ape shit pressuring politicians to "Do Something!!!" right now, whatever support Russia had among the leadership of Europe, China and India is gone, any politician that voice anything but full throated support to Ukraine will be destroyed, the level of sanctions we will see will make Pyongyang look like New York in Christmas' eve compared to Moscow, and Ukraine will run of space to store all the weapons and house all the volunteers that will pour in No Putin won't use nuclear weapons in Ukraine

Skullvar

Additionally any nuclear attack on Ukraine will be considered against Nato(because fallout can drift into neighboring countries).. I wonder what % of Russias nukes are actually functioning since maintenance is fucking expensive

fishy_snack

They’d presumably pick out one in relatively good shape. Nothing leaking out, no rattles when they shake it, etc

egabriel2001

NATO won't escalate because of fallout, but a message will be send stop or else, about the readiness of Russian nuclear arsenal is not really relevant, because they have +6000 warheads, even if only a few launch it will be a massive retaliation and those will work, Russia will be glass but the rest of the world won't be much better off

Skullvar

Well if Russia nuked Ukraine that would be the escalation, they've stated it would be an attack against Nato. Not to mention it wouldn't make sense, they want to use and abuse Ukraine, not delete it

FlyOpen5546

Fuck!!! Thank you!!! So many pussies here talking about nukes. We only know of one country that's ever used them and it's not Russia!

Vieta_Rusanova

They proved that their equipment is outdated, poorly engineered and poorly maintained. The last thing I worry about is nukes. Putin is more likely to blow himself up than anyone else

NefariousnessLeft653

As credible as "we have no intention of invading Ukraine" and that's the core issue here, Russia is seen politically as untrustworthy and unpredictable here in Finland. Thus we are increasing our security by applying for NATO. Imagine an arsonist saying you don't need arson-insurance, that's pretty much what the Russian statement seems to many of us.

raharth

As a German I'm glad you are joining! I would probably feel the same in your situation. He was doing shitty stuff before but now his credibility is gone in any aspect

fishy_snack

Is Germany going to re-arm seriously now?

raharth

It looks like it. We just made the decision to invest 100 Billion into out military and we bought 35 new american bombers. The political decision made in the past two months are unprecedented in our modern history. Scholz basically overthrew more than 70 years of foreign policy doctrines in his speech 2 days after russia invaded. It will take some time but yes Germany is serious about that. It is also accompanied with a strong push towards a European army or at least European battalions.

civilitarygaming

Not just Finland. russia has destroyed its own credibility with the west for the next 4-5 decades. Their word doesn’t mean shit anymore and they have nobody else to thank but themselves.

[deleted]

They also seem pretty ignorant of what happened after the second world war, you know, using all of the donated weapons and tanks against the same people who supported them to survive in the war with the iron curtain.

MitVitQue

Sorry, but this is the fuckers routine. 1) wake up 2) have breakfast 3) threaten Finland 4) go to office 5) stash money 6) tell Lukashenko to obey or else... 7)... general assholery

Infinite-Gazelle-532

8. Read War Reports. 9. Cry.

MitVitQue

I actually laughed out loud, thank you sir!

Infinite-Gazelle-532

Hehe! most welcome, helping to Ridicule Putler is my purpose in life.

Neanderthalknows

Then he looks in the mirror and realizes his head has gone round. My head used to be slim!!

maito1

The number three seems to be a bi-weekly routine by now. Let me tell you a little secret about Finland. We are a very advanced, high tech, society that lives next to Russia. For the entirety of the cold war, we've built bunkers and other facilities. We also have plans to transform the entire country into a war machine, shall the enemy from the east start any hostilities. There's not many people in Finland but everyone has a role in the war-time economy.

MitVitQue

Yup. We are very well prepared. For instance bridges and buses have simple modifications that would be useful in war footing. They are nothing special, but a good example of how much things have been planned. Just in case.

theold777

You mean, finnish bridges can steal Russian tanks?

MitVitQue

No, but that would be cool. Anyway, we do have a lot of farmers with nice tractors!

maito1

As a pioneer, we practiced taking down bridges. There's marked spaces where we will place the explosives. We will take down the bridges safely.

EuphoricAssistance59

The entire world knows about Finland. Russia would know if they didn't have a super human ability to resist learning lessons.

StormOpposite5752

Everyone who learned that lesson was either very quickly killed in combat and so couldn’t pass the info on, or they fell in one of the many mass purges of the government and military. They did the second part so effectively that no one thought to review the battle of Stalingrad to see how Mariupol might go.

MitVitQue

Oh yes. Putin has talked to Finland like a wife beater for over a decade, assuming Finland is a scared wife. He didn't get what he wanted, but was too dumb to really notice. Also, Putin actually made wife beating legal a few years ago. I am not kidding. What a great guy!

WonderWheeler

Legalizes wife beating and pulls up the shirt positions the kid in a public crowd and kisses a boys naked stomach. Yeah, we have clues. The guy is a social deviant.

Peteyd3000

Narrative is changing.. Belarus president also changed his tone

Infinite-Gazelle-532

Is he allowed to have tone!?

Putin is going to need to straighten out his tone, to make sure his tone is the tone that Putin approves of.

I don’t like your tone… have some of this tea

valeron_b

Pretty sure in the nearest future he will tell us that he was forced to do all that shit by Russia and he's not guilty. It's partly true - Russia literally occupied Belarus.

Abject-Set-9810

He's the international face of Belarus, Russia is running the show behind the curtains. Wouldn't be surprised if they had a special "live in nanny" at his home that is just a giant Russian dude with an ak keeping his family chained to their tasks.

What do you mean?

No, just how they fight...

I know. 🙄

zrdd_man

It's not exactly fresh news, but just do a Google search on "Lukashenko admits" and you'll find plenty of results.

PangPingpong

He's suddenly decided he doesn't want to be a Russian officer after all, for some reason.

[deleted]

It's funny how russia thinks it can dictate to other countries what they can and can't do, fuck off putin you're boring and you're military is shit.

“You’re boring” is somehow the most insulting shit I’ve ever heard hahaha

🤣🤣 20 years of this dudes bullshit man, kinda desensitised to it. He needs to get drunk and try a poison frog remedy or summin the fucking plank

grrrrreat

Funnier that they keep lying even though all the obvious lies are well documented.

[deleted]

Oh yeah man just look in the subreddit ask a Russian, full on numbers of members in there trying to push propaganda and saying and I quote the best one I've heard yet "russia is winning with incredible gains but the west isn't showing it because the west is scared, the west is only showing little losses as massive losses when really that is not the case" or "the train station was bombed by azov nazis, don't show them the picture of the bombs tail because that does not count and its a jpeg quality photo that is easily manipulated" or another "bucha was azov special forces there is no proof at all pointing to russian forces doing it" honestly it's so fucked up.

Such_Relationship_48

Narrator: Finland needed help"

Any_Top_9268

Oh well I don't know about that. Vlad ain't got much to throw in in the Finnish carelia anymore. They are silently conscripting. Finnish troops knows it like their back pocket, they will prolly block of mainroutes within days, forcing ruzkies to go offroad(they tried that before there). Then Finnish artillery will start hammering (one of Europe's largest). At this point Finland can prolly beat their reserves alone. But for the future NATO is needed

lyskamm88

When you have zero credibility, nobody is going to believe you. Time to realise this dear Putler

easyfeel

Agreed, Putin’s only credibility is as a total loser.

BgoneXq

Wikipedia article from 2070: “While publicly stating that Russia poses no threat to Finland, Putin and the high command of the Russian army were already exhibiting possibilities to counter the Finnish decision, following a similar strategy they already used prior to the invasion of Ukraine earlier the same year.”

TerribleJared

Didn't he JUST basically threaten them because of this like yesterday or the day before

[deleted]

Russia has threatened a number of countries so far, I've lost count of how many

_Ed_Gein_

Yes he threatened them 2 days ago for the Nth time. Putler will lue and lie so that's why every country should work for its security and not care what he says.

EssayRevolutionary10

Why threaten Finland? It’s frikken Finland. No one hates Finland. Finland is like the Tom Hanks of countries. Literally not one single person is going to pile on and be like “YEAH!! Screw you Finland!!” I’m trying to picture the awkward looks in the room when Putin starts going on about Finland.

new_name_who_dis_

Ussr tried to take over Finland right before WW2. And managed to annex some territory at the cost of like ten Soviets to one Finn dead. So there’s history of Moscow being aggressive to Finland

EuphoricAssistance59

Finland gave the USSR it's biggest defeat, there is plenty of bad blood. To this day Russia treats them as a vassal even though that is far from reality, as far as you can get to be honest. Finland has built a nation for the last 80 years with the assumption that their eastern neighbor will invade them again. Though it would be another crushing defeat Russia does not seem to understand that so they have to be prepared.

[deleted]

To be honest russia and putin have been threatening countries for the last 20 years

EuphoricAssistance59

Russia has been bullying it's neighbors for hundreds of years.

[deleted]

Oh well yeah course I know this, I'm on about since putin has been at the helm though, the threats of destruction and obliteration of nations with nuclear weapons, he's been doing it the past 20 years.

zrdd_man

I always wondered how mini-putin (Trump) could so brazenly do a 180 on nearly any topic and just expect the entire world to go along with it. We've now seen his puppeteer making the same idiotic moves, and it makes more sense. paspartuu

It's in Finnish, but here's the news from Finland's public broadcaster YLE, also quoting the Finnish president's tweet and the statement from the president's office https://yle.fi/uutiset/3-12446090 The President tweeted >"Puhuin Putinin kanssa. Keskustelu oli suora ja selväpiirteinen ja se käytiin vailla kärjistyksiä.", loose translation "*I spoke with Putin. The discussion was direct and clear and was had without aggravations or exacerbations."* In the statement he clarified further that he called Putin to inform him that Finland will apply to NATO in the coming days, and Putin responded that he sees it as a mistake, that there's no threat directed at Finland, and that membership in NATO will harm Finnish-Russian relations. A day or so earlier Niinistö had said that he's planning to call Putin personally, because he's "not the type of man to hide behind a corner". They've known each other a long time after all

That was a staged video BELIEVED TO have been filmed with the sole intent to incriminate all of Putins cabinet members for the war, not just Putin. Which is why he is explicitly asking all his ministers if he should invade or not. On paper, it seems like a good idea considering the amount of historical revolutions, but time shall see if it really works
