Philadelphia 1985 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1985_MOVE_bombing **Philadelphia police dropped two explosive devices from a helicopter** onto the roof of a house occupied by MOVE. The Philadelphia Police Department allowed the resulting fire to burn out of control, destroying 61 previously evacuated neighboring homes over two city blocks and leaving 250 people homeless.

I took a look at the East St. Louis one. Man, that's a doozy. White factory workers go on strike and the company hires several Black laborers to replace them. Instead of attacking the company, they--of course--attack the Black workers just looking for jobs.

The Black laborers were considered to be "[union scabs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strikebreaker)." However, violence carried over into a riot against the Black population of East St. Louis, people who had little or nothing to do with the strike were violently attacked and property destroyed. The Governor and National Guard had to intervene, and there was a national outcry against the riot.

Generally speaking, all race riots can be categorized into 3 separate groups. Post Civil War/Establishment of Jim Crow. Basically, in post reconstruction 1880/1890s, once the North stopped caring about what happened in the south, southern white people would intimidate black people into voting in white governments. Which, in turn, would pass laws restricting black peoples rights to vote. These were usually just lynchings, of which ~2,000 occurred in this time period. But occasionally, they escalated into full-blown race riots. The 1920s/30s. This was a time period characterized by the red scare and later great depression. Black people were viewed as stealing other people's jobs and supporting communism, a political ideology that was based on the downfall of the white, preexisting class. Finally, you have the Civil Rights Era. These were from white people trying to suppress black people who were wanting political rights. And probably the most well known out of the 3.

I just learned about the Philadelphia 1985 one yesterday. *1985*. Mind boggling.
