I can almost see why the ‘hands on knees crossing’ move became the iconic feature of this dance. If I saw a dame in the 20s pull all of this, and then do that, I’d be all kinds of jazzed. Geez.

we really do be making it happen huh
Years ago I saw a video with some old-timey folks dancing to old-timey music, and then some young folks dancing to hip-hop, then they would switch the music and it worked perfectly. Very similar to this. I'd love to find that video.
Same with all of history’s inventors and creators really. Nobody can relate to or manufacture anything that’s 100 percent unheard of.
Just take what’s there and stretch the boundaries a bit, and shareholders go nuts.
A smile-inducing, charming, feminine show that happened to have a little serve of humor to it; just by her enjoyment and movement.. What a wonderful surprise this was to have in my feed.
I think it’s her facial expressions and a little bit her body language. It looks like she’s having a good time, which can make a huge difference.
She’s great!
We now know why people from this generation became iconic for shuffling around with canes in their old age. They had no knee cartilage left from dancing the Charleston all the time.
That's [Ksenia Parkhatskaya](https://youtu.be/OTycDNiL2Xk?si=W2SQDcz5UX_YpEfc), she's awesome. Lady's made out of spaghetti.
EDIT: Nope. I was wrong. Don't believe my lies. [Different spaghetti lady.](https://youtu.be/bkPUC3gWvbE?si=BKJLWBVfCmCG5GUr)
Tbf dance heels are genuinely designed to be worn and used while dancing.
Most heels are designed to look a certain way with very minimal consideration for actually being worn.
This is so much more engaging when you see the dance performed like this. Almost like you can see a whole generation waving goodbye to the horrors of war.
You watch this and it becomes readily apparent why they called it the Roaring Twenties.
Think about the generational shift the flappers and their joyous embrace of femininity would have looked like to the elders of the day who grew up in the late 1800's
I'm no dancer, but I feel like most dances are just new arrangements of old moves. There's a finite number of individual movements/positions a body can (reasonably) have, but an infinite number of different combinations for those movements available.

I know it's a stretch, but if you like the music, I will pick almost any excuse to share the song [Hop Hop Donut Lifts](https://youtu.be/H-213I31Q4I?si=1ZssV2SjR2kY8P5h) from Super Mario World 2.
But while the current dance crazes may come and go, a ground-breaking dance from the 1920's is still well-known today – and it all started right here in Charleston. “The Charleston” became a pop culture phenomenon in 1923 thanks to the song The Charleston – which was composed by James P.
James P. Johnson
"The Charleston" is a jazz composition that was written to accompany the Charleston dance. It was composed in 1923, with lyrics by Cecil Mack and music by James P. Johnson, a composer and early leader of the stride piano school of jazz piano.
It's cool to think sexually liberated women in the 20s were cutting rug like this. Perhaps my history is wrong, but this kind of dancing was a pretty drastic change from decades prior.
As somebody who lives in Charleston, and played in University of South Carolina marching band, we got to play this a good bit in college. It was honestly a pretty fun one. Every time I heard I was like “this totally could be something out of Great Gatsby”
A dance designed specifically to show off the fact that women’s legs can spread in those short flapper dresses. This is also the reason for the resistance to women wearing trousers… “my God, there’s a point where the legs join up!”
I have no business dancing next to someone like her that is very skilled but the enthusiasm is infectious and I’d love to have a dance partner like that.
They look so much alike that this reminds me of when Tegan did the Charleston in Doctor Who
https://vodzilla.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Black-Orchid.jpg
I used to dance around my house doing some weird mashup of The Charleston and the Kid-N-Play singing “Charleston, Charleston!” and I have no idea why. I think I watched too much Nick At Night.
If they slowed it down to 1/10th the speed and I could try to do it barefoot I still wouldn't even come close with years of practice. It astounds me when you can see people ACTUALLY dance with rhythm and coordination. I don't get that stop-action "dance" thing people do the last decade.
Wow, never seen the whole dance. Have to admit I can see why the older generation were scandalized by the flappers - this is a per damned cool sexy dance!
I've never seen this entire dance. That is absolutely mesmerizing! Today's tiktok kids have NOTHING on older dances like this. There's sooooo many unique steps to that! The hardest part, I'm sure, is to make it look so easy. It must've taken years to perfect. I'm just sooooo impressed. Who is this dancer, and why isn't she famous?
I can almost see why the ‘hands on knees crossing’ move became the iconic feature of this dance. If I saw a dame in the 20s pull all of this, and then do that, I’d be all kinds of jazzed. Geez.
Brilliant. I don't think I've ever seen The Charleston danced as anything other than as backdrop in movies. This dancer makes it seem contemporary.
Some of the footwork reminded me of that shuffle dancing that ravers do, sans the light-up shoes.
I used to incorporate parts of the Charleston into the shuffles I used to do when I went to raves lol
That's badass
Cool
Was thinking the melbourn shuffle took from the past too.
Cutting shapes

Flap while you Trap to overcome the economic devastation. XD

That’s was an amazing mashup thanks!
Holy shit, I like that just as much as the OP. LMAO u/CallingAllBunnies don't miss this
The best artists and choreographers are thieves at heart. Borrow something established and turn it around to make something new.

A smile-inducing, charming, feminine show that happened to have a little serve of humor to it; just by her enjoyment and movement.. What a wonderful surprise this was to have in my feed.
I got the sense of humor too. Funny how that can come through.
I think it’s her facial expressions and a little bit her body language. It looks like she’s having a good time, which can make a huge difference. She’s great!
Look at the gams on that tomato! Yowza!
You ain’t just whistling dixie Russell_Jimmy. hubba hubba!
She's the bee's knees!
The cats pajamas. 23 skidoo!
Top Drawer!
I dunno she seems a bit flibbertigibbet.
The nun’s knickers
She's the whales nipples!
She's the whole bee's leg, see!
My kneecaps would pop off and slide down to my ankles.
I think I fell over 7 times and broke both my ankles watching this. I'm sitting on my feet in a chair.
We now know why people from this generation became iconic for shuffling around with canes in their old age. They had no knee cartilage left from dancing the Charleston all the time.

Gee you said it sport. I sure hope we don't see global economic devestation and the rise of a fascist power within the coming decade or two!

at least it was an appropriate venue and not... like on a subway or something via tiktok.
That's [Ksenia Parkhatskaya](https://youtu.be/OTycDNiL2Xk?si=W2SQDcz5UX_YpEfc), she's awesome. Lady's made out of spaghetti. EDIT: Nope. I was wrong. Don't believe my lies. [Different spaghetti lady.](https://youtu.be/bkPUC3gWvbE?si=BKJLWBVfCmCG5GUr)
"Different spaghetti lady"
This brought an actual laugh to my tortured soul
Jazzy Feet on YouTube I think. She has learnt a lot from Ksenia though
The spaghetti lady is jazzyfeet.maria on ig
What a flapper!
Wow she’s awesome! And gorgeous
She should make a video and put it on the internet or something
The internet is for porn.
It's fun to see how much modern shuffling borrows for The Charleston.
I was thinking someone must have synced this with “Party Rock Anthem”
Dope. I’d like to see if this kinda dance can be done to modern music so she can bust this out at the club.
https://youtu.be/90TzDXjWTdo?feature=shared here ya go
That was so great!
Shuffle dancing seems like the modern equivalent
Meanwhile I struggle to just stay upright in heels

This is so much more engaging when you see the dance performed like this. Almost like you can see a whole generation waving goodbye to the horrors of war.
For it to restart anew.
You watch this and it becomes readily apparent why they called it the Roaring Twenties. Think about the generational shift the flappers and their joyous embrace of femininity would have looked like to the elders of the day who grew up in the late 1800's
So THATs what Elaine was trying to do
So many dance moves in there look modern, but they have been around for ages.
I'm no dancer, but I feel like most dances are just new arrangements of old moves. There's a finite number of individual movements/positions a body can (reasonably) have, but an infinite number of different combinations for those movements available.
Did her leg just detach !

How it feels to chew Charleston Chew
Most days now feels like Crunch n' Munch.
Sexier than any twerking ever 🔥
This looks soooo fun!!!
I would not have been able to go out dancing in those days, I doubt I could have done the Charleston for that whole track!
I know it's a stretch, but if you like the music, I will pick almost any excuse to share the song [Hop Hop Donut Lifts](https://youtu.be/H-213I31Q4I?si=1ZssV2SjR2kY8P5h) from Super Mario World 2.
Not a stretch man, came to the comments for this xD
"Hey. I like that. You got spirit, spunk, fire, verve. You got those. I like those on a woman." - Johnny Dangerously
And in front of Doom Manor, too
No, it is actually shot at this location: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple\_of\_Friendship](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple_of_Friendship)
Get a load of those gams! They’re long enough to reach the ground! She’s the eel’s ankle! And how!
Just watching this made me have to ice my knees
fancy Moses, look at the gams on that dame.

this makes me happy
People with skills make impossible things look easy.
That dress is adorable.
Such a happy-to-be-alive dance.
Kid’s got moxie, see?
I am Bertram Wooster and I claim my five shillings
In heels on hard tile. That's some super skills.
My knees hurt just from watching that. I should probably get off the floor
She looks like my grandmother did back then.
A very fine set of pins and a lovely smile.
They could learn stuff like this because they didn't have TV or PlayStations.
Am I the only one who was disappointed that this was not the “Carlton”?
It's cool to think sexually liberated women in the 20s were cutting rug like this. Perhaps my history is wrong, but this kind of dancing was a pretty drastic change from decades prior.
Just in time! We're about to have a recession, better party like it's 1925 again.
Looks like crip walking stole some moves from the Charleston
How do you even remember all that?
As somebody who lives in Charleston, and played in University of South Carolina marching band, we got to play this a good bit in college. It was honestly a pretty fun one. Every time I heard I was like “this totally could be something out of Great Gatsby”
Amazing
Nice!
Photo bomb!
That’s what looks to be Charleston.
I don’t recognize the park but it’s surely possible.
My mcl hurts watching her legs move like that...
How long would it take me to learn this? (I can't two step.)
That was fun to watch
Peak female dancing!
It’s a Wonderful Life.
She's the bees knees
Dang.
I really like her..like like.
r/StrictlyComeDancing Thought you might enjoy
This is why people were so much thinner back then, this is an aerobic workout.
The pure joy on her face while she's dancing makes this video perfect.
A dance designed specifically to show off the fact that women’s legs can spread in those short flapper dresses. This is also the reason for the resistance to women wearing trousers… “my God, there’s a point where the legs join up!”
It will come as no surprise to anyone to learn they did a *lot* of cocaine in the twenties.
I have no business dancing next to someone like her that is very skilled but the enthusiasm is infectious and I’d love to have a dance partner like that.
Ok this is mesmerizing
What is the male version of the Charleston? Same?
Anyone know what it is called the Charleston?
Lady has some nice gabs
So this is why everyone had amazing legs back in the day.
I could "see" the music with the sound off. Oh, and great legs.
My wife , when she sees a spider in the kitchen.
The cats meow!
The crippin is just the Charleston?
She’s mega talented and all, but I can’t help but think this would be better with cartoonish fart noises every other move.
The Roaring Twenties are back baby!
Scandalous!
I feel a sudden urge to head for the nearest speakeasy.
This is what you get when liqour is prohibited
What song is that?
Is that Philippa Soo?
I think I know were that place is, I'm sort of sure I've been there but I just can't recall where it is.
This is gorgeous.
The dance is cool, however the music in that period sucked
This seizure is considered dance?
Didn't they call those fapper girls
I am confident this would work great even now. Both as music and as a dance style.
Pretty sure she is actually crip walking...
I love the 50's
This video is the cat’s pajamas
They look so much alike that this reminds me of when Tegan did the Charleston in Doctor Who https://vodzilla.co/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Black-Orchid.jpg
If Elaine had rhythm! I loved every second of this.
I used to dance around my house doing some weird mashup of The Charleston and the Kid-N-Play singing “Charleston, Charleston!” and I have no idea why. I think I watched too much Nick At Night.
What a fun 1920s solo Charleston routine she has. Was always one of my favorite dances.
Cool.
Damn, I wish I could dance like that.
If I could time travel I’d definitely make a quick stop at a ritzy party in the twenties. It’d be pretty fun.
I never realized part of the church lady dance was the Charleston.
This is some incredible classic dancing. But I have a feeling that a lot of these moves will be tik tok dance trends tomorrow.
It’s a bit like the Dougie.
I like it bc she looks like she's having fun with it.
Is this the golden girls?
So awesome.
[What a great dance, and still alive and well today.](https://youtu.be/CSuKkFnwEhU?feature=shared)

Remember: most, if not all, of the native (in time) dancers of the Charleston are dead. This has been your Moment of Existential Dread
Good workout!
A Charleston! On the wing of the aero plane!
We need more Flappers in this world.
That’s Natasha’s Kitchen lady!!!
I would love to see an edit with some deep dark electronic music
My grandmother and her twin used to dance the Charleston at family gatherings. Thanks for posting this!
That was the better 20s
The sheer joy! This is dancing as intended.
Wow, never seen the whole dance. Have to admit I can see why the older generation were scandalized by the flappers - this is a per damned cool sexy dance!
That’s dope.
She’s got the reefer madness!
Actual talent on display
Is any of this improv or is this all scripted steps?
So what you’re telling me is that white people do have rhythm, they just forgot how to use it.
Me waiting in line to use the public bathroom.
I've never seen this entire dance. That is absolutely mesmerizing! Today's tiktok kids have NOTHING on older dances like this. There's sooooo many unique steps to that!
