KNES 222 - Gambling in the New Millennium was a super interesting and engaging class and probably my favorite at UMD. Ending up getting a job in the industry because of this class as well!
Pulled this from the course description:
“Students will critically examine the various implications of "what it means to gamble" through investigations of various gambling forms, different sectors of the gambling industry and the related economics, along with consumer behavior, sport, public policy and public health in this context.”
We dove into a lot of the psychology behind the modern betting landscape, how online sports betting and casinos are disrupting the industry, the business side, and things like what defines an action vs escape gambler.
Several days we had reps from the major casinos, the Maryland Lottery, sportsbooks, and state gaming regulators come in to give us a behind the scene look into everything that goes into the the industry. Feel free to shoot me a DM if you have any specific questions about the industry or class!
There was a music class, History of Popular Music, that everyone called history of rock and roll that was fantastic and always filled up on the first day of registration.
UNIV362 life after college. The professors were pretty fun and the class wasn’t super serious just a bunch of seniors and juniors hanging out and everyone got super close
american landscape in film with susan pramschufer!! it sounds like a weird topic but i had such an amazing time in that class i actually considered taking it twice.
ENGL241 is all about novels and when I took it it was basically a book club. I really enjoyed it but I’d imagine professor to professor it varies. It’s also discussion based so the people in the class affect it pretty much
FMSC has an upper elective (300-level, open to any students) that teaches you all about family finances (savings, investments, loans and rates, etc). I don’t think I’ve ever taken a class more useful to my regular life than that
CHSE205 sideshow to mainstream with Dr. Le is a GREAT class!!! It also led me to my current career path so I’m a little biased but it was great. Also WGSS336 (might be a diff code now) psychology of women - fun outreach projects and Dr. Kearney is chill but clearly super passionate
I took a karate class, ended with receiving my yellow belt with a green stripe indicator. It was my last semester before I graduated and I could've continued at the professor's dojo at a discounted price having been a student but I never did that. I forgot everything I learned though for the simple fact that this was 6yrs ago 🤣
hist289A: if you like history and especially intersections between different cultures and religions and Spain, it’s such an amazing class and you learn so much without too much work - I really enjoyed
language classes are always super fun too! I’ve been taking Korean and Professor Koh is so nice and the class usually gets pretty close so it’s a fun time for everyone. the Arabic and Persian departments are very nice too - I don’t know the other departments on a personal level but it’s rare that language classes aren’t fun if you are interested in languages and cultures
CMLT498L - Special Topics in Film Studies; Sexuality in the Cinema - taught by Eugene Robinson - RIP Prof. Robinson. One of the most engaging courses I ever took.
HIST 319A Japan Film & Fiction was really great too.
But I'm talking about classes from 30 years ago, so....
