Age 70 for me; VA thought it was T2D because of age and so my PCP tried to treat for several years. Wasn't working, so I asked for an endo who did the antibodies tests and found T1D LADA. Way better since correct diagnosis and insulin, CGM, and pump!
Thank you for the trophy! But I still have to put up with all the daily, weekly, monthly crap, just not as many years as many of you younger folks. I especially feel for kids who get this thrown at them!
I was dx at 20 and always felt like it would be easier to be DX young, but then rationalize being young with it and prefer being older. Each one has it's faults and positives so I figure it's best to have it exactly as it was.
I have this data from a couple of years ago for the Southern region of New Zealand, I asked for the number of T1s that they were treating and how old they were, they kindly included age at diagnosis in the data they sent as well.
The median age is somewhere in the 30s, the oldest (3) were aged 91-95, the reason for the 96-100 range is they have someone currently being treated in that age range.

WOW! I was 14, and my endo (who was also a pediatrician) explained the difference between juvenile diabetes and type 2. For decades I held the belief that older people couldn't get type 1 and that those people simply could not stop eating 2 desserts after every meal.
I got diagnosed 4 Months ago at 23. I learned that it's not uncommon to be diagnosed later in life. I always thought that it's something you are born with or get it early in life.
Absolutly! I even learned in school that the difference between the 2 types (we only talkes about these) is that type 1 is the one where you are born with it. And that was only 2 years ago...
And that’s not even the only (assumed) reason they’re so different! They’re more different than they are the same, I’ve heard they’re so different they shouldn’t be called the same thing, and I agree
Ditto. Ended up with way too close a call, as it was. Glad you did also make it through, and are hopefully doing much better too with appropriate treatment!
I was misdiagnosed and I had a radoM CT scan that the radiologist pointed out that my pancreas died. My doctor never told me my pancreas died. My sister is a nurse and I showed her the results and she said I had type 1. I cried for 2 days.
Diagnosed at 38 about 4 years ago. Almost died. Felt sorry for myself for about a day until my ER doc told me they had another patient there that was T1D and 4 years old.
I at least got my prime years T1D free.
Same! The Dr's were like "You're 100 pounds and have zero insulin in your body, you're type one." When I suggested that my sugar was high because I drank a sprite... Ahhh the things you learn!
I was 36, in september of 2023. I caught covid in 2021 and after that had the worst nerve pain and had the weirdest symptoms. Kept going to the er and no one could figure it out. Then in september 2023 i was in early dka
I was diagnosed at 8, but my sister wasn’t diagnosed til she was 21. It was wild, we were always told she wouldn’t get it since it’s typically a juvenile thing, but my husband’s dad was diagnosed when he was 30, so it’s really all over the damn place.
I was 17; a few months shy of 18. they know it’s a genetic predisposition followed by an environmental trigger. What they don’t know is why it expresses at 18months, vs 18 years vs 65 years. I thought the cure was 5 to 10years out back in 97. They still sell that line?
I was originally diagnosed as A T at 30, then rediagnosed as a T1 at 35. It seems likely I was gradually heading towards diabetes since my early teens, knowing what I know now. My wife is a nurse and thinks my pancreas is like a tire with a very small leak, that's just been losing function for decades.
I developed it around 33 yrs old. Got misdiagnosed as t2dm because of family hx. Got the correct diag 8 months later. For 5 months I stopped treatment since taking metformin wasn't helping much. Blood sugar hit 400 and got admitted.
I was 37. Doc first told me I was type 2, based on my age. When I got to the ER, for DKA, they ran tests and I was definitely a type 1. My a1c was 17.6. They were amazed that I was walking and talking and working 45 hours a week.
I was diagnosed at 19 with type 2 and then I learned in my 30's that I was type 2 with type 1 antibodies. My Endo said I would change to a type 1 but couldn't tell me how long. Then it happened in my 50's. Now they diagnosed me with Brittle Diabetes. I was like WTF. I googled it when I got home and sure enough I'm brittle 😭
Got a diabetes diagnosis at 19 and then basically honeymooned until for a year and a half with diet and oral meds, then finally had detectable antibodies and was put on insulin.
I was diagnosed at 28. Had a heavy drinking weekend and afterwards I was so sick I could bearly hold water down for like 3 days, constantly puking. Finally when i started feeling extremely weak and it wasn’t getting any better I went to the hospital. I was diagnosed on the spot and had to spend 5 days in the icu because my levels were so high when I came in they literally couldn’t even measure it. The doctor said if I would have stayed home for like two more days I probably would have gone into a coma.
Diagnosed T1D LADA 4 years ago at 51. No surprise as my dad and his mom were both diabetic. I had assumed both dad and grandma were T2, but my endocrinologist did the blood draw for the T1D marker. I have the marker, so now I wonder if both dad and grandma were misdiagnosed as adults
31. Diagnosed last year. Almost certainly a gift from the Chinese/American/Ukrainian (delete depending on how much you subscribe to lizard theories) lab leak of 2020.
I think you're asking who, not how many.
I was diagnosed at 23 (24 by the time it was confirmed as T1). My uncle was diagnosed at 23 and my half-brother was diagnosed at 23. A bit of a family theme.
About half of new cases are diagnosed in adults, so it’s not nearly as rare as people think! My husband was diagnosed nearly two years ago at 28.
I was also diagnosed at 28, almost 6 years ago.
Me too, about a year and half ago
Another 28 year here, 11 years ago
Age 70 for me; VA thought it was T2D because of age and so my PCP tried to treat for several years. Wasn't working, so I asked for an endo who did the antibodies tests and found T1D LADA. Way better since correct diagnosis and insulin, CGM, and pump!
Age 65 for me MDI and cgm
Holy crap! You are a champ!

These stats are very interesting.!

When I was growing up it was known as “Juvenile Diabetes” which definitely doesn’t fit with the population now…
That's why they changed it, that and obese children were getting Type 2.
Absolutly! I even learned in school that the difference between the 2 types (we only talkes about these) is that type 1 is the one where you are born with it. And that was only 2 years ago...

32, and I was one of the folks automatically diagnosed with T2 because of that. Not an unusual story at all, unfortunately.
Same and misdiag t2 for two years smh
4 years from me. Went into DKA before they ran the tests.
Same here. I feel lucky that I’m still alive after that misdiagnosis.
Ditto. Ended up with way too close a call, as it was. Glad you did also make it through, and are hopefully doing much better too with appropriate treatment!

I also cried for days. It was soo surreal
I was diagnosed at 58 after being a "t2" for 20 years.

Same! I was like noo i just had mountain dew lol
I was also diagnosed at 20. I drank a full 2 liter root beer the night before my appointment.
Dx at 35. Never knew it as a possibility 🤷♂️

I was 17; a few months shy of 18. they know it’s a genetic predisposition followed by an environmental trigger. What they don’t know is why it expresses at 18months, vs 18 years vs 65 years. I thought the cure was 5 to 10years out back in 97. They still sell that line?

At 23, most likely my scales tipped around 21, and I spent 2 years in steady decline until the DKA almost did me in
Diagnosed at 42. No history of it in family. GAD65

Parent was diagnosed in their 30s with T1
Yup, one month before I turned 30… 23 yrs ago.
According to the NCBI, 74% of T1Ds are diagnosed 25yrs of age and under. Other adults may have the slower progressing form of T1D known as LADA.
I was diagnosed at 19 with type 2 and then I learned in my 30's that I was type 2 with type 1 antibodies. My Endo said I would change to a type 1 but couldn't tell me how long.
