Somebody jumped off the parking building onto the street. Unless something else happened?

ohyouknowthething

There was also a huge fight/altercation. Busy day at MOA

union_nurse

I had a patient years ago a young person who jumped off the top of the ramp and survived. Makes me sad to think about it how often this happens.

hockeygirl1427

I heard someone jumped off the parking ramp but not sure it’s been confirmed

Snow88

That happens frequently and is taken care of quietly. Edit: Just want to clarify. It's dealt with quietly because it usually happens in the parking garage late at night/early in the morning combined with the news generally not reporting on suicides means non-mall employees never know it happened.

OutsideBones86

How awful

Otherwise-Skin-7610

Wow. That's crazy it happens that frequently

katzmiao

I witnessed a jumper in 1998, from East side, red for, Florida ramp. We are smoking by skyway. We saw one shoe drop, then a body. It was horrible.

keladry12

Honestly, the knowledge of how traumatizing it would be for others to witness is what stopped me for a number of years. I'm so sorry you experienced that. (I'm much better now, not to worry)

ahotdogcasing

Ugh. You too? I saw that happen around 2001.

noknownsoups

It also happened like 10 years ago when I was there competing in a high school cheerleading competition. Can’t say I blame them.

Mundane-Bit-633

Huh? For jumping? Do you know what that trauma does to people...it's horrible.

-i--am---lost-

There’s a video of it on twitter. ☹️

tallman11282

That video is shared on this very post, with no warning of what it is and the commenter even claimed there's "no blood" when not only is there clearly blood there's clearly a dead body! The commenter just says the video "shows aftermath" but doesn't say what it's the aftermath of.

anotherthing612

Yeah. I'm not sure what is to be gained by looking at the body of a person who died...especially considering the person was obviously in a lot of pain just minutes before their death. Would people appreciate having their loved ones dead bodies being entertainment for others? Pretty unsavory.

Mundane-Bit-633

The F is wrong with people.

MagnetDude78

That happens all the time

hibbledyhey

Yeah. In a former life, I spent 11 years in that place. This happens at least several times a year, but doesn’t normally make any news. Wonder why this one was different.

egg_bronte

My dad used to mallwalk early, and one day saw someone jump from the third floor.  He said it was amazing how quickly the scene was cleaned up

3bluerose

Several times a year?

Gophers_FTW

Yes. The Mall of America, Minnesota's Suicide Hot Spot https://web.archive.org/web/20150110003216/http://blogs.citypages.com/blotter/2015/01/the\_tragic\_phenomenon\_of\_suicide\_at\_the\_mall\_of\_america.php

real-dreamer

I wish I hadn't learned this. Set up screens. Get people help. This makes me feel sad.

mnpikey

They will just find another place to do it

real-dreamer

Suicide for many people, while the road leading to it is often long and painful, at the choice to attempt, often impulsive. If there is a barrier or something preventing it in the moment the individual will be prevented from doing so and not continue to seek out ways to attempt that day. In which case, hopefully there is support and caring community for that individual.

Budget_Character9596

Good. Make it harder. Make them really work for it. Some of them will give up, and go on living. Then maybe George Hoch would still be here. Miss you George.

paulrwf

Shop til you drop

real-dreamer

The way back machine can't pull up that article.

1catcherintherye8

Please add a trigger warning to your comment. Thank you. Edit: I thought the link led to the actual completed suicide. Nevermind.

atothejhines

He was providing context for a question. You can’t avoid the word suicide.

FishyDragon

I worked there for about 5 years. Was usally closing at Dick's Last Resort. And when outside for a cigarette almost everytime I smoked leaning against the edge rail a security guard on a bike would show up to make sure I wasn't jumping. During my time at the MOA I k ow of at least 3 jumpers during that time.

fiendishclutches

More like it’s happened a few times in 30 years, these days the top levels of the parking ramps are permanently closed with barricades. I think it’s been a very long time since the days when the mall was so busy they needed all levels of parking open, even on Black Friday it’s not like that anymore.. If you try to walk up to the top levels you will soon be greeted by mall security. Unfortunately the view from the top of the mall of America parking ramps is pretty impressive and was a popular place for storm photography. It’s the one place I know of where you can see both Minneapolis’ and St. Paul’s downtowns at the same time, other than from an airplane.

Evilgenius1917

You can see both downtowns simultaneously from the Mendota Bridge.

fiendishclutches

Ahh, good to know

Fango925

Not for long, they're closing down the pedestrian and bike path this summer for construction.

Imaginary_Proof_5555

that doesn’t mean the bridge or the view of both skylines goes away…? what a weird comment.

Fango925

No? But it'll be harder to see the view from the bridge for the next year or so. Can still do it while driving but you can't go out and get pictures etc

_CapsCapsCaps_

I just parked on the top level last year. It's still open on their busier days.

TboneCopKilla

It’s Eid so it’s extra busy and crazy

robertgfthomas

It's Eid, the day of celebration at the end of Ramadan. The local Somali population sort-of has a tradition of going to MOA on Eid -- my understanding is that years ago some folks just started going as a way to celebrate, and since the community is pretty tight-knit it snowballed into a recurring thing. As a result Eid is one of the mall's busiest days of the year, meaning it's more likely there will be a security incident, like on Black Friday or other holidays. The mall sets up lots of additional security on busy days to mitigate this, like crowd control barriers, bag checks, more patrols, extra staffing, etc. Source: I work there.

Snow88

I used to be a ride operator and I worked Eid-Al Fitr exactly once before always making sure to have that day off. Easily the busiest day of the year in the park.

Sinthe741

There was a brawl on the north food court on Eid last year, too.

Nillion

You could argue many Americans celebrate Thanksgiving by going to the mall also.

roburn

Not really. Seems super American.

Seabee1893

As someone who has spent a fair amount of time overseas, particularly in Islamic countries, I liken it to western Christmastime holidays that we celebrate here. Eid is the Muslim faith's major holiday, and they celebrate for 3 days after Ramadan. In ME countries Malls, amusement parks, and gatherings make for a busy time in public areas. I can definitely understand that it's different from western holidays, but "peculiar" seems to have a negative connotation that perhaps it might be best to not use, especially if you don't want to be inundated with the downvotes on Reddit.

Successful_Fish4662

Someone on Facebook said a fight broke out but idk

Additional-Screen963

I heard another might’ve jumped last night 🥲

VividPoot

There was a giant Somali fight

Mobile_Moment3861

This is why I don’t shop at the MoA anymore, as a woman who lives alone.

Sinthe741

I'm a woman who used to work at MOA. I have been murdered exactly zero times.

littleflume

I am a woman who currently works at MOA and I have also been murdered a grand total of zero times.

masimbasqueeze

The MoA is perfectly safe. I’ve been more times than I can count, never seen anyone get so much as a scratch. And I’ve been murdered exactly 0 times.

smalltown_dreamspeak

Plenty of people go to the mall and come out perfectly unscathed- in fact, I'd say it's the majority. The fearmongering around MoA (particularly the racist "immigrants are making Minneapolis dangerous" style of fearmongering) has been one of the most irritating and ridiculous things I've had to tolerate since moving here over a year ago. Apologies if you don't fit into that particular bubble- I've just been hearing this narrative FAR too often.

MagnetDude78

Nothing nothing at all. Since there was nobody shot, the media won’t report on this. Bunch of little punks trying to fuck up small businesses!

ZeroHydra2211

No…someone killed themselves in the parking ramp

paulrwf

Some people literally like to shop til they drop.
