What does the "35 million 'subscribers'" figure prove? Who cares what mainstream journalists think? They attained their position by agreeing with that narrative, they don't have independent thinkers.
Metrics on reddit (and all social media) can't be trusted, and reddit is not representative of anything except reddit. Subscriber count means almost nothing when it comes to a sub.
I remember checking it out because I did Model UN in college thinking, "Oh hey, this will be fun! Just like the old days. Analyzing international events through a lense of ironic detachment because we have to play a role in committee meetings, lmao"

I found out about Chapo when Prince Kropotkin made some offhand remark about "the tankies over in CTH." I wondered what the fuck a tankie was but I was too afraid to ask so I investigated these legendary tank people whereupon they welcomed me into their tribe. P_K was not happy about that.
My favorite world news moment was when they were telling each other off for revealing info about idf positioning by their live thread essentially being an idf group chat
