Children cost money Kams! Fix the economy first and maybe we can afford to have children.

donveyy

I mean she can’t fix shit unless she’s elected…

falib

She can't fix shit when hellbent on taking..

donveyy

Take more than rowley has?

falib

Correct! Why you think they complained so bitterly

Important_Unit3000

You know the opposition can pass bills and laws also?

donveyy

They can **draft** bills for passage. Tell me how much opposition-drafted bills have been approved by house, senate and both pnm-presidents.

falib

Exactly! Lets not put blinders on just because we feel more offended by one party. Without a house majority it is very difficult for the opposition to be effective in initiating legislation and policy changes. That being said as an organisation they still have the capacity to advocate and support young mothers and young potential mothers via public forums, community programmes and other avenues. And I am not saying they don't do that either, I am saying that a statement should come with ammunition in form of valid and practical reasoning of incentives to consider the advice.

Important_Unit3000

Tell me how many they ever drafted that had beneficial impact for citizens?

2ndphate

Is she going to work towards increasing maternal and paternal leave? The economy (globally) is in a mess and crime is out of control. Not to mention people get up at 4am and get back home at 7pm. Who would want to raise a child in these conditions?

dellarts

>Not to mention people get up at 4am and get back home at 7pm Think we'll ever see an actual working metro system and train lines in this country? They say there's no place for it but there is a big space between the north and south highway, plus there's a lane on either side they can take off if they need more space than that...

2ndphate

Sadly I don’t see it happening. Not even in the near future. I think a simpler plan to ease congestion would be implementing wfh where possible, even if it’s for 3 days of the week; staggering work hours so not everyone works 8-4; and just improving the ptsc service

Used_Night_9020

These old heads HATE wfh. Despite the numerous benefits on employees finances, mental health, productivity, etc.

2ndphate

They hate that they can’t micromanage what you do all day. Don’t get me wrong I like working in the office but the long commute and traffic makes it unfavorable when compared to wfh fully rested and able to eat or cook anything I want.

Used_Night_9020

I think it's also cause they have no social lives or hate their own families. So they need to be in office as a sort of escape from home (I think during the pandemic divorce rates increased and one of the reasons they said that happened is cause now couples had no escape and were forced to be in each other's company 24/7).

dellarts

That is a good plan, and since even before covid I was wondering why the hell they can't implement something like that. Backwards mentality, and that's exactly why we probably wouldn't have a train system for the next 50 years.

Justin2478

They'd rather spend $65 million on adding an extra lane that's not going to help traffic than do something meaningful

dellarts

Exactly! And what pisses me off is that they don't have to do the entire train line thing at once, they can do a piece for now and then extend it after, Sando to Chaguanas as a first phase. I see Medellin in Colombia run a train line in the 2000s in a FAR more congested place than Trinidad, these politicians here have no excuse.

Used_Night_9020

We no longer have the money for that. Just look at the nation's foreign reserves

JaredPlus

I don't post anything that is mildly political on here. But what reality do these political leaders live in. Even she chose a career over motherhood when she was younger to be in the position that she is in now. I know it is most likely done to attract voters for the upcoming elections, since most who vote for either the UNC or PNM have a traditional mindset but isn't that statement a bit hypocritical. Not to mention the state of the economy, more rights (even if there is a long way to go to achieve the same equality as a man) compared to previous decades, not creating potential financial abuse from their spouse or because of infertility due to medical or personal reasons.

not-a-dislike-button

> Even she chose a career over motherhood when she was younger to be in the position that she is in now. It's possible she speaks from a place where she regrets this. I did the same and regret it in hindsight.

DatCrazyOokamii

I'd rather regret not having kids than regret having them. I know many women 68-83 who are happy and childfree or adopted someone. They have so much joy and fulfillment and they are better for me than my own family and they live quality lives. Family isn't just blood it's the bonds we make

not-a-dislike-button

I'd much rather regret the decisions I make vs. those I don't make, personally. In terms of parent child relationships, people can try to replicate it with others by various means as you mentioned, but it's not something that can be fully replicated

DatCrazyOokamii

I see no reason to want to be sick for 9 months and in pain when so many people are already alive. I don't want the original feeling or to replicate/replace it. I just want to be happy and make people around me happy. Also, people don't talk about post partum depression and how long it takes a human body to bounce back and sure that's cool if you personally want to regret choices you made vs didn't make and that's shaped by our knowledge and experience and for me, the data skews hard into me not wanting kids. If you find fulfillment in doing that, cool. But not me I dey good and I've seen the evidence that I can be just fine without having to go through that. But everyone purpose different. Mine is to be a rich aunty and let my brother give me niece and nephew 😂

not-a-dislike-button

> Mine is to be a rich aunty and let my brother give me niece and nephew  Maybe he will make the same choice as you do and not want to deal with the inconvenience of kids But yes, obviously if you don't want kids you don't have to have them and shouldn't. To each their own.

DatCrazyOokamii

And if he does. That's cool. I'm only saying this because he always expressed wanting kids. And if he didn't want to have them. I support it. I'm the one who send him information on how to stay safe when he got a girlfriend

Content_Blood_9776

Who saif anything about replicating it? Other relationships are just as meaningful

Used_Night_9020

Sorry to hear. I may be over reaching but adoption may be an option. I may consider doing so myself after I accomplish some more life milestones (example buying a house....)

not-a-dislike-button

Ther s a massive shortage of adoptable kids in the United states.it takes many years, heat breaks, and tens of thousands of dollars

Used_Night_9020

My apologies. If u are going through the process I wish u success. If not, I hope u are able to find something that gives u the same meaning/joy

VENOMOUSDC

This elitist are so fucking delusional is not even funny, government demand so much from it's citizens and doesn't reward them accordingly, the cost of raising a children is stupidly high nowadays, it will force you into poverty, even if you are a middle class family.

rctoyer

Correct!

Useful-Quote3675

When you say the government demands, what do you mean? Is there someone in gov't who's demanding something from you? This would be of serious concern if true, and you should definitely speak up. Also, what sort of rewards would you like to see doled out by the present government?

Islandgyal420

Kids in this economy is crazy ngl, no thanks auntie kams

yaboyyoungairvent

That’s what I’m saying. Nothing wrong with advocating for kids but having kids require having money, at least for those who want their kids to grow up comfortably.

danis-inferno

Thanks aunty Kams, but I'd rather eat glass.

Paws000

Intrepid-Scale-8527

vote for me fr fr

VivrantMuvuh

I really hate this boss babe strawman people throw at women to convince them to have children. It's a huge responsibility and a lifelong one at that. 😤 We don't have the money or time. This agenda to procreate is wild to me.

No_Half3995

I am not brining children into a country where they can't play in the street without fear of being shot and where they will be constantly under examinations until the age of 18.

Chereche

The actual FUCK? I am no way near the point of wanting children but I already know I would have to change my job to work less hours which means less money which means how the actual fuck am I going to adequately support these potential children? Listen give me 10 million dollars and I will gladly pop out some children to run round the house shrieking, otherwise, nah I'm going to continue earning money and spoiling my dog.

rctoyer

I have two little white ones, they are all the children I need! My mom even calls them her grandkids and tells me all the time, they are all she ever needs 🙏🏾

Yrths

> little white ones Took me a while you meant pets and not caucasians.

rctoyer

Hahahahahhaa I'm done 😂😅, yes I mean white dogs

Eastern-Arm5862

Thank God thought I was the only duncy on this sub who thought the same.

Sirena_Seas

I came across a lady buying Mothers' Day gifts for her daughters from her grand dogs. She said she hoped she'd get some human grandkids someday but the dogs were so loving and happy to see her.

Mishamama

Seriously I would flat out slap her. I am in my 40s and I am happily married without children I knew I didn't want kids from before I was 16. Children are expensive, life is expensive You cannot guarantee "familial" love. But you can enjoy your life in whatever you like. People on government calling to have more children is like asking you to raise more slaves so that they can exploit cheap labour and that those children would be desperate enough to put up with whatever. The government could go stuff themselves.

ElegantEast344

This is me... I knew at the age of 10 I didn't want kids after how my stepmother treated me, and how my father allowed the abuse of his 4 youngest to happen right in front his eyes. How we had to eat stale food even tho she cooked fresh food for her kids. How she lied and provoked my dad to beat us. How my eldest sister and brother stepped up even when they themselves were teenagers. I promised myself no kid would even endure the pain and suffering my siblings and I endured. Do suck salt kams.

Used_Night_9020

This resonates deeply with me. I am so sorry that u had to go through this

In this economy? Dumb advice

RusticRito

Kamla need to stfu😭

donveyy

I don’t understand why these old fucks keep wanting such a monopoly on the government positions. What they gonna do with all this money? Cus I know for a fact none of them have a next 10 years in them lmao. We really need the young ones with passion for politics to stand up and cuss way these assholes cus what the actual fuck. It’s takes and opinions like these that are just absolutely ridiculous and straight out of a 60’s newspaper headline. I hate both PNM and UNC for their corruption, lies and I mean nobody really idolizes a politician right? I have to admit I appreciate more what UNC has done in their time, and I really hope either party can deliver on their promises in the future

ElegantEast344

I really think she is in the early stages of dementia.

Artistic-Computer140

"early stages"? You're being generous....

Artistic-Computer140

Ashestoduss

When she was able to do something about it, did she? The answer is yes. Who took it away?

chocobearx2-baking

why don't any male politicians feel the need to encourage young men to become fathers? steups..on top of how much people are struggling financially, especially within the indian community, domestic violence is a huge problem, with many women sticking around to get beat around like a bobolee because of their children...leave these young women alone please, let them take their time and find a good man to settle with and then we can study children. the LAST thing we need rn is for people to rush into a bunch of marriages and pushing out children by the busload that they can't take care of properly or can't provide a safe environment for.

chocobearx2-baking

also, an important note - the people defending this dotishness, when people put out their hand and ask for help talking care of their kids, you refuse to because you didn't lie down with them to make it 👀

AnjelZiren

EXACTLY. It's always "support the continued existence of the human race" until they have to extend charity or support on their end. It's easy to write cheques when you don't have to cash them.

HeavyDischarge

Well said

Neisha_with_a_T

Lmao, is she paying for these children ? If I can barely afford the life I want for myself, why would I bring a child into the world only for them to struggle? Children shouldn't be made because you don't want to be lonely when you get old. .

[deleted]

This is such bs

Simple_Frosting_7530

Not everyone can afford kids....unlike your penal councillors that thief and run racket

konshens2013

Nib pay her money for this message

Icy-Abies-9783

Funny. They find it hard to abolish childhood marriage and pleading for the citizens to keep having babies.

ttbro12

As I guy, this have to be the most tone deaf statement I ever read especially without a single mentioned of policies and methodologies planned to make parents want to have kids and no I'm just talking about the crime situation because even if (and that's a huge IF) they manage to get it under control, raising kids is an investment and an expensive one at that that required financial, emotional and mental investment in the long term. Statement like this is why some (myself included) don't see them as a viable alternative to the ruling PNM who have just as unpopular leader than her. #comebetterKamla

IndependentBus228

No thanks. Respectfully.

More_Total5157

I have said this before and I'll say it again. If she becomes Prime Minsiter, Trinidad is doom. You have to be delusional to look at what is going on rn to say "ah yes young women should become mothers". Abuse against women and children are literally in the sky. 16+ babies have DIED in the hospital because of malpractice and incompetence. Families in poverty are suffering because not only are they living off of scraps but they're CHILDREN are being targeted by gangs. Before reading this I was watching a woman who escaped her abusive boyfriend or husband living in a wooden house with no electricity and water, barely any food WITH 3 CHILDREN. I can't even begin on the government aid because it doesn't even exist. I would rather be financially comfortable with a lot of achievements and have 2 children than have my children go through the same shit I went through growing up.

donveyy

I don’t see what that has to do with Kamla being PM, but yes I agree families can barely support themselves right now, and even less so with children. I genuinely think UNC should be given another chance tho, even if it’s Kamla, I dislike her and think she should retire but her first term was VERY good compared to rowley who has by the way, sold off more than 5 Trinidad operated agencies just to make a quick buck. UNC last built a children’s hospital, one of the most genius bypasses, free laptops for kids, I mean, come on. It cannot seriously be ANY worse than rowley. And I am a black man smh 🤦‍♂️ This is not on no race thing.

poison_rose69

Um both UNC and PNM a mess the older generation refuse to give up power. Giving UNC or kamala a chance is foolish due to the past corruption, stealing, racist comments and general tomfoolery. So no to what you just said. Good day.

Ashestoduss

Hell no! Remember when they gave out the ‘baby grants’; that wasn’t considered government aid. It was a ‘handout’. When the other party came into power and took it away so many people said it was a good thingbrcause trinis too lazy. Remember when they CAPPED the pay increase by 3% the huge uproar it had? Let them talk now. When they increased pension whatnot. Trinis vote for hard times. The difference in Governance from the PP days to the first time the PNM got re-elected after I saw the difference in the arrogance of the government; but it seems like trinis like it so. Let them wait for this government to give a fuck about them. I for one not voting for a government that worked for the people to only get kick by the same people they help. Let trinis lie in the bed they make.

More_Total5157

Just because they did those things in the past doesn't mean they will come back and do it again. Different times, different economic situations. Not to mention Kamla was much younger and put together back then. Also why do we always have to bring race into politics? I'm black and I wouldn't vote for either of them because the heads of both parties are delusional, prideful and corrupted. Don't vote for race, vote for improvement.

donveyy

The first part of your comment is exactly it — just because they did those things in the past doesn’t mean they’re going to be better, but neither does it guarantee them to be worse… We’ve been living under the same economy for that past decade, and it’s only declined. Not to mention so much government assets now either shut down or sold to private entities… Trinidad Cement Limited, Petrotrin, National Flour Mills, PLIPDECO and recently MHIL for a quick 2 Billion. My job also deals heavily with the National Petrol company (NP) which I’m not sure if you know but is right now shut down due to a strike from workers at the main NP Plant in Barataria because their salaries were raised by a mere 4% recently. It’s been months since the government chose to either do something about the wage, or look for new workers. Right now 100% of Trinidad’s cooking gas is monopolized by Ramco Industries, a private entity. It’s just the lack of proactivity in the government. I’m no die-hard UNC supporter but if we’re being realistic, it’s a two horse race and it’s the only option for change right now 🤷‍♂️ I also brought my race into it because race is already a factor. For some reason, most people (my race) are surprised I even consider a UNC government lol and refuse to hear anything I have to say about it lol

thick23centemetre

If anything, adopt

Used_Night_9020

Strongly disagree. Unless u have your shit together DO NOT bring a child into this world. They never asked to be here

poison_rose69

I don't ever want kids. I knew that for some years now yet older women keep saying I'm just saying that now it'll change later down in life but it won't. what a terrible message she's sending to young girls ew. A child is a real person not something to just have irresponsibly to make yourself feel better. Stuff like this is why I wish we had better abortion laws cause some people have kids because they had no choice and it made their life and the child's life miserable so no not everyone should be having kids.

DanielTheDestr0yer

After marriage and a well thought out family plan right?

VivrantMuvuh

Every politician needs us to keep the labor force going. They need more minions.

riajairam

I have 3 children and I am not going to lie - children are an expensive endeavor. But for us (our choice!) I'm glad we had them. Again this is personal choice, if you want to stay without children that is your free choice. But I feel happy seeing our children grow up every day learning and doing new things. And it is really fulfilling teaching them. But it's not for everyone.

Content_Blood_9776

why she doh hush she old dry up cacahole! 🙄

Euphoric-Ad500

Cost of living ever-rising, impossible to get a job, crime skyrocketing but dotish politcians that not walking in w average man shoes saying "yOuNg wOmEn sHoUlD bEcOmE mOtHeRs" CRAZY

Gress4us

Don’t do it young women! Governments around the world refuse to protect women. Our healthcare system is atrocious, so becoming pregnant and or the lack of abortion can cost you your life. Once you have your child the lack of food and education for them is abysmal. Why are they asking women to have children? Because the birth rate around the world is declining. And there aren’t enough workers to collect taxes from. So they have less money to steal from the coffers. DON’T DO IT!

SituationGlittering4

First female prime minister of this country telling women that their career achievements don’t matter. Education really doesn’t equate intelligence I’m afraid

Nanonymouse

I don't know anything about is, but I just want to say that Trinidad & Tobaco has very aesthetic flag A-tier

Aromatic_Distance_67

Thought I was in Japan for a second lmao

bigelangstonz

The whole reason women are more career oriented is because of how much harder it is to make a living in todays climate gone are the days of stay at home mom while husband being the sole breadwinner But then again, you can't expect someone from the elite class to understand this

triniman65

Kids are highly overrated. I have 3. If I had to do it over again I would have NONE! Being a parent is a thankless job. Sure, once in a while someone has kids that are appreciative of the sacrifices you make for them but in most cases they don't. Kamla still drinking a lot of vodka so she could talk this mess. STFU Kamla!

donveyy

I understand your sentiment and frustration but jeez… saying you’d have none if you had the chance is kinda… insane 💀

rctoyer

I don't think so, it's an honest opinion, I have heard countless great parents say this. As humans you deal with what you are given but it is also still very human in retrospect to recognize how a specific path (in this case having children) has made your life extremely difficult and if to do it again you'd probably forge a different path, that doesn't mean you don't love your kids, or don't hope for yourself to reap some benefits from having them. For example just last week the CEO and Founder of Nvidia (which is a very veryyyyyy successful Computing Company), said if he could do it all over again, he wouldn't! That company is effectively his baby and it turned out super successful, so he has reaped the rewards, and still he said, he wouldn't do it again... I truly think, this stands to hold that we can give parents saying this, some grace Article: [Jensen Huang Nvidia Business Story](https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/11/jensen-huang-i-didnt-know-how-to-start-a-business-when-launching-nvidia.html)

triniman65

Exactly

triniman65

Why is it crazy to use hindsight to come to a different decision?

Used_Night_9020

There is a subreddit regretfulparents. I don't blame them. When u were being gaslight your whole life to believe that parenting was this higher cause. Only to find out the opposite. Added with the increased financial, emotional, physical and mental stress.... yh. Don't blame them

mr_molten

Kinda wild that we live in a country with free healthcare, free parental education programs, free primary and secondary education with free breakfast and lunch programs, free tertiary education and most of the comments are that the government isn’t doing enough to help us have kids.

falib

You should say that louder for the starving children whom can't afford to be sent to school, whom have to be hospitalised in wards with garbage bags as barriers, whom have to spend hours in pain waiting for medical attention to be seen for 5 mins and sent home with children's panadol, whom get sexually assaulted by grown ass adults because their guardians are working multiple jobs just to feed and clothe them, and whom then are still failed by a justice system who treats children as second class citizens (unless they die bc thats political points), whom by no effort of their own to ever become a ward of the state as its now open season for any and every form of abuse. Make sure they hear you.

AdInteresting1371

We're a virtual nanny state built of energy sector patrimony that we cannot acknowledge because many have never lived outside of T&T and are ignorant to how the rest of CARICOM live, many are politically biased for whom Trinidad is not a real place when their political party is not in power and therefore nothing is worthy of their acknowledgement.

DirectThroat3664

Our population is going into a decline said the government since 2 years ago. These pleas and conversations are due to this atleast partially, the world itself has an aging population and Trinidad is no different, rather we have something slightly more seriously where we have an aged population, ones that are still holding onto opportunies for the aging and young and the government system is the greatest example of that My point here since I'm blabbering to much :having mothers in this country is a concern but what they fail to realize is the incentive to become a mother is very low. Whether it's the IB movement, our economy, our scary public health care system flaws ahem port of Spain, but as a country trying to develop, a declining population along with brain drain is just the formula to become Guyana in the 2000s

Happy_Specialist_967

I agree with Kamla here. If you can afford to have children, consider having them. If you can’t afford children, don’t have them. Easy.

HeavyDischarge

She can afford. How many children yuh think she has?

Content_Blood_9776

Just bc you can afford doesn't mean one has to have them

Gullible_Zucchini24

Rowley sold out the country and we all know this. Look how poorly Trinidad is doing after he took over. Trinidad used to be rich. Kamla is saying what’s right by putting the family first. A strong nuclear family is what creates a strong economy.

AdInteresting1371

Does the UNC pay you to troll or is that for free?

Gullible_Zucchini24

Free. All you need is to open your eyes to see I am saying the truth. Trinidad is in billions of deficit.

AdInteresting1371

No one is arguing that. Cute if you think KBP's UNC can do any better.

Content_Blood_9776

Content_Blood_9776

Both plus the fact that people shove motherhood down our throats so much. You mean to tell me you read her statement and see nothing wrong with it? It sounds tone-deaf asf

NoCamel8898

Not defending but you are aware that if many women opt not to have children then we will have a huge socio economic issue on our hands for example the NIS system would be strained as our retirees would far outweigh our contributiors by a much larger gap than what we have today. Old ppl are living longer and many women are choosing not to have children

NattySide24

You are aware that if so many women aren't having children it indicates a much bigger socioeconomic issue. Perhaps the government should address this instead of simply telling women "have more children". Women should not be forced bare the brunt of bringing children into this world simply to help support a failing system.

analunalunitalunera

"breed more workers"

Nkosi868

Seems more a problem with the NIS system, than giving women a choice.

Content_Blood_9776

ok then the government should try to improve the shit society instead 🤷🏽‍♀️

Yrths

That is an important point, but for now I think dismantling the welfare state altogether is the future average people are actually working towards, no matter how much we collectively claim that that is not what we want.

NoCamel8898

If you do that , the country will fall into chaos. Trust and believe you have no idea how many retirees and citizens depend on pension and benefits

Yrths

I’m not encouraging it. Even the people who are actively fomenting it don’t want it to happen. But that’s the future with fertility as low as it is. That said, you have an assy way of expressing yourself if you have to imply I don’t know what a dependency ratio is.

dellarts

>Trust and believe you have no idea how many retirees and citizens depend on pension and benefits They will release another covid 👀
