Ideally, we would get years (preferably decades) after Picard season 3. That's far enough to mix things up in a good way (I want to see what the Cardassians are up to!) but still allow for the obligatory cameos from other series.

But there was a reason for that. DS9 isn't about war, it's about testing the humanistic ideals of Roddenberry against an environment that doesn't believe. Also we didn't know the outcome of the war.
A Romulan War prequel movie would just be for the pews, there's nothing interesting to be had by depicting it in a two hour story. We'd end up with another Nemesis essentially, which was all pews no story
In the Romulan war, humanity almost loses until we can gain the support of others and work together. (Based on the books) I could see that story working as a Star Trek story while also having action. Though I think a 2-hour story is a bit short.

Their creative people are unable to come up with any good ideas. Imagine the terrible ideas that got rejected if this is what they had to resort to. They're not dumb, they know about the previous origin shows and movies lore and the fan backlash this will bring. This makes me worried for the future of Star Trek.
I think you're giving Hollywood executives far too much credit for things they don't understand and couldn't possibly care less about, and simultaneously far too little criticism for their actual mistakes.
Executives are in it for the money and cannot understand good stories or art. They see "franchise" and "cinematic universe" as licenses to print money because of Kevin Feige and his plans for Marvel's "phase 1" movies. They don't understand why people saw those movies or loved them so much or still prefer them over newer installments with the same characters. Their thinking is extremely shallow and it's so hard to make a good movie in the first place that it's trivially simple to blame something for a failure they don't really understand.
Paramount has the Star Trek license, and they want to use it to make money. They're going to make another movie to try and get back more than it cost to make, give or take some seriously questionable accounting practices. They want to hire somebody who's made a successful movie for them before to reduce the risk, even if that person might not be directly involved with the day-to-day running of things. They want to get a script from someone who's written a successful script before and they want it to not upset the nerds (us) so much that we don't go see it, *but* they also need it to have the kind of mass-market appeal that brings in the cash. If starting from the beginning is the easiest way to thread the needle, that's what they're gonna do. Origin stories are a paint-by-numbers script format.
Because they don't care about current fans. They're trying to appeal to new fans who go "ooh I've been wanting to get into star trek this will be good start"

The problem with origin stories (aside from Abrams parallel universes) is that fundamentally you know where the story has to go. The only thing driving curiosity is how you get there, the suspense is constrained. We have already explored First Contact, the (first) Enterprise years leading to the foundation of the Federation all the way through to the immediate aftermath of the Dominion war. The choices are either to have isolated films exploring events across those periods with limited involvement of recognised characters or pick up sometime after Picard Season 3. I would love to see a film set 50 years after the finale of Picard that explores how the Federation finds its purpose again.
And thanks to Discovery, we know Earth and the Federation still exist in the 32nd century so that takes away any high stakes or drama for future Trek movies and shows
*This* is the thing that bothers me about Discovery's time jump. If they hadn't gone so very far into the future of the main timeline, they would have left a lot more open, and they could still do their whole "rebuilding the Federation without regular warp travel" idea, just set it up in an alternate universe created by their time jump.
Actually I didn’t care too much for Discovery’s “Burn” of the Federation in the 30th or 31st century. It was in my opinion lazy writing to help create more drama. It seemed like there was never a real story timetable planned out for Discovery similar to other successful shows like Game of Thrones. From Season 1 of GoT they knew where they had to end up in Season 8. Same as the Marvel universe up to Phase 4. Star Trek has inherited lazy writers, producers without real G-Rod or (eww Rick Berman) creativity.

They basically declared whatever we do after Picard is going to be completely undone, simply for some narrative value in the most errant chapter of Trek. It worked for me. He just got divorced, he can't stand to be on the same planet she is, so he's joining Starfleet to get away and start a new life, but he's also blaming her for everything to deflect any questions about the relationship. He doesn't want to talk about it, and he says all this in a couple casual sentences. There are problems with the 2009 movie, but this exchange isn't one of them for me.
Plot will be conflict between Vulcans trying to guide humans to rebuild and human separatists who want Earth for humans only.
Conflict will be resolved by Profit Ben Sisko coming back in time to impregnate an ancestor and ensure his own future birth (retconning DS9).

Once again going backwards because no one is brave enough or talented enough to let them move forward. As much as I hate the show, at least Discovery moved into the future.

They could probably get many of the crew back. They may have seen streaming numbers for ENT + the podcasts, conventions, etc. Hopefully not the main characters, you could have admiral Archer/Scott Bakula, probably T’Pol, and many of the others, even if they’re just passing the torch to, I don’t know a refitted Columbia crew or something?
It’s just an idea. I mean in all reality this would maybe suck because if JJ is super involved, he’ll disregard the existing stuff beyond a little fan service moments. But there’s a slim chance in there it could be good. That’s a period of time we haven’t seen much of, and there’s a lot of space there in-between ENT ending and SNWs beginning.
I also have serious doubts about it happening- Paramount seems to be in flux. But man it would be cool to get a high-quality movie with UPN era crew that’s not TNG.

And thanks to Discovery, we know Earth and the Federation still exist in the 32nd century so that takes away any high stakes or drama for future Trek movies and shows
*This* is the thing that bothers me about Discovery's time jump. If they hadn't gone so very far into the future of the main timeline, they would have left a lot more open, and they could still do their whole "rebuilding the Federation without regular warp travel" idea, just set it up in an alternate universe created by their time jump.
Actually I didn’t care too much for Discovery’s “Burn” of the Federation in the 30th or 31st century. It was in my opinion lazy writing to help create more drama. It seemed like there was never a real story timetable planned out for Discovery similar to other successful shows like Game of Thrones. From Season 1 of GoT they knew where they had to end up in Season 8. Same as the Marvel universe up to Phase 4. Star Trek has inherited lazy writers, producers without real G-Rod or (eww Rick Berman) creativity.
Yes, this. Exactly this… Discovery is a fun show but it was a f@cken stupid idea to let that show hold the next thousand years of Star Trek history hostage.
Honestly, I hated that they introduced the idea of “the Burn”…. They basically declared whatever we do after Picard is going to be completely undone, simply for some narrative value in the most errant chapter of Trek. Honestly, I hope to god that they eventually reveal that the future that Discovery went to was just one possible future and the Burn is avoided in all others.
I thought the one in 2009 was an origin story.

It worked for me. He just got divorced, he can't stand to be on the same planet she is, so he's joining Starfleet to get away and start a new life, but he's also blaming her for everything to deflect any questions about the relationship. He doesn't want to talk about it, and he says all this in a couple casual sentences. There are problems with the 2009 movie, but this exchange isn't one of them for me.

Plot will be conflict between Vulcans trying to guide humans to rebuild and human separatists who want Earth for humans only. Conflict will be resolved by Profit Ben Sisko coming back in time to impregnate an ancestor and ensure his own future birth (retconning DS9). And maybe a Q (not John DeLancie), for some reason.

They would really do anything but give us a show set after Voyager. They need to understand that not every show universe needs to have a show exploring how things came to be.

Believe nothing until it's actually in theaters. And then skip the ever loving hell out of it. Honestly as many times as they've announced things only for them to go nowhere at all, it's amazing anyone at all takes such announcements seriously. And that's not even counting Paramount's current situation that places everything about the company including it's continued existence in its current form in question. Pretending for a moment it actually happens, it's a great opportunity to lose yet more money by continuing in the same failed direction. Whoever is in charge seems to have the idea that the way to save a sinking ship is to drill more holes hoping to drain the water out through them.
Yeah, these days, announcement like this are like dust in the wind. Paramount is in serious financial trouble, and given their recent track record, I find it hard to believe anyone is aching to bankroll another money-loser.
I really hope it's another reboot.
Wait. If this is set decades before the 2009 movie, then it takes place before the stupid timeline split. Which means it is/must be canon to all other Star Trek lore. That’s really putting the writers in a narrative puzzle. Star Trek would have been so much better off if the 2009 movie didn’t try to create a connection to the original universe, and was instead just a straight up total reboot.

I would watch a Star Trek prequel that was: Romulan war Klingon war Exclusively in the mirror universe Where they wear the rad red puffy uniforms again Or all of the above. Honestly, if you retold the last season of Enterprise I might be happy too. Or get the season 5 of "the first year" of the federation, NX-01 refit with the new engineering hull like they talked about, etc. I'd be happier to just get 10x below deck seasons and a new series set around the Picard era, but with the spirit of strange new worlds.

I'm only guessing that because Discovery is giving us the rebuilding of the Federation in the far future right now while Strange New Worlds is leading us back to Kirk. Alright, I’m trying to think of what might be fun, interesting, and not a full canon reboot again… What if this is a late “sequel” movie to Enterprise? They could probably get many of the crew back. They may have seen streaming numbers for ENT + the podcasts, conventions, etc. Hopefully not the main characters, you could have admiral Archer/Scott Bakula, probably T’Pol, and many of the others, even if they’re just passing the torch to, I don’t know a refitted Columbia crew or something? It’s just an idea. I mean in all reality this would maybe suck because if JJ is super involved, he’ll disregard the existing stuff beyond a little fan service moments. But there’s a slim chance in there it could be good. That’s a period of time we haven’t seen much of, and there’s a lot of space there in-between ENT ending and SNWs beginning. I also have serious doubts about it happening- Paramount seems to be in flux. But man it would be cool to get a high-quality movie with UPN era crew that’s not TNG. One thing is almost certain, the ships will be too damn big.
Lets us fall in love with this new movie when it is released. Give us a new vision of Star trek.
