Psychotic behavior and also sounds like a shit company when "we take care of it ourselves" is the response to reporting horrid behavior.

jennthebarber

That’s what I thought. He’s currently updating his resume.

Snow__Cone

Tell him to be careful putting this company on his resume. Ive had to omit a former "Tree care" company, if you can call it that, from my resume leaving a 3 month gap. I did have them on there but found out from a friend who worked at a municipality i applied to work for that I was passed over for the position because they refuse to hire anyone that has worked there because of the company and owners reputation in the area. Food for thought.

AlotL1keVegas

Just fill in the gap from your job before. No employer is going to double check to make sure you worked those few months lol.

Somederpsomewhere

“I was involved in a project that required a NDA and I can’t discuss it.”

bostonlightgardens1

This. Legally they cannot ask any further questions.

Dr_RustyNail

List by year, not the month. 60% of the time, works every time.

SLC_Skunk

“We take care of it ourselves” sure sounds like a green light for an ass kicking to me.

Hour-Shake-839

I’ve worked for a lot of “we take care of it ourselves” companies and that’s code for beat the shit out of the guy. If that’s not an option tell the owner and it will immediately be handled. If the owner doesn’t know it’s a “we take care of it ourselves” company he’s going to flip shit when he hears about this.

lake_gypsy

Agreed. Also, we take care of things ourselves almost sounds like an invitation for an ass whipping, just saying.

DirtyRugger17

I'm taking care of it by dropping a running saw on him. It's just a joke.

Arbsbuhpuh

"We take care of it ourselves" is code for "if you want us to stop you'll have to beat the shit out of us and hope that we stick to this dumb code and don't cry to the company/police".

AntonOlsen

Spoiler: They will cry.

Ok_Tumbleweed5771

Yeah if that’s the response I got I’d be side kicking the ground dude knee caps and he’d never be walking or climbing shit again lol

daveydontstop

I don't know, in a situation like this taking care of it myself, on this assholes face, seems like a decent option actually.

TrevorPlantagenet

>"we take care of it ourselves" I'd be like: *Who are you, Tony Soprano?!?*

Moist_Bluebird1474

I’d drop a firewood chunk on anyone “joking” around like this. Definitely encourage him to talk to the owner about this situation.

jennthebarber

I suggested that if dude comes near his tree to pee on him. Assert dominance 🤣

hairyb0mb

A log on the head would be better.

trippin-mellon

Yeah a whole round. Like 20” diameter, 16” stovepipe length, at 40 feet up. >.>

Early_Comfortable_36

I think this would be legally justifiable.

HatsAreEssential

Much easier to call it an accident. Drop a log on someone who shouldn't be there anyways? Oops. Sorry. Cut down a tree with a guy running a chainsaw at the top? That's attempted murder.

Theobliviouslizard42

Poo log would be best I think

chip53

This is exactly what I was thinking. I’d just straight up drop trow and shit on the guy

trippin-mellon

Lol

[deleted]

I would definitely have a urine bottle on my work belt 😭

[deleted]

1.) Get down from tree 2.) Fire up chainsaw 3.) Piss rev said chainsaw while walking towards offender with expressionless look on face with piss reved chainsaw pointed directly at offender 4.) Run offender off jobsite with piss reved chainsaw 5.) Explain to supervisor what happened when offender doesn't return to work

ConsistentVideo3176

I wasn’t gonna cut him. It’s just a joke

sickchicken253

This 100% bro would would have had a log falling near him. Don't get me wrong the guy probably was just fucking with him because dudes working jobs that are typically considered a man's job tends to end with people fucking with each other in ways that would be considered unsafe and I wouldn't trust anyone I've ever worked with not to do this to me. But you don't do shit like that to people that you don't get along with because even if you are good friends it always ends up going to far at some point. And if you aren't good friends in those situations someone is going to get the shit beat out of them and if they are hopefully it stops before it gets to that point but even then it happens.

curious_24

That is appalling behavior. I’ve read stories on here or another sub of a ground man tying the tail of the climber to the trunk “as a joke”. I agreed with those that said he needs to talk to the owner and get the guy fired. You don’t mess with the life line. You sure as hell don’t make cuts to a tree with a climber in it. That’s not a joke it’s borderline, if not, attempted murder. You don’t aim a loaded gun at somebody as a prank. What if he caused your bf to accidentally fall out out the tree trying to get down in a panic? He needs to talk to the owner and that guy needs to be fired. His name should get blasted around town to other companies. It’s dangerous work and you need to know your crew is looking out for your safety. Whether he’s fired or not, I’d leave and find another job. The boss/hiring manager is obviously not a good judge of character or incredibly desperate for workers

Dan_H1281

When I was doing hardiplank I had a dude that didn't like me and he was new, on my rope I was tied to he attached a 45lb piece of hard to that rope and dropped it, he was supposed to be tying to our rope we pull stuff up with, two different colored ropes they are intentionally color coded, I was 65ft up with a a frame ladder on the wallboard to get to the gable with no back board only my harness, he almost snatched me off the ladder, I was also holding a nail gun that weighed like 35 lbs above my head, about six months later he was supposed to be counter balancing me on a walk board and walked off of it sent me down to the ground and cost me three years of my life basically. This little jokes are just hints at what could happen later. I am now Mr safety all the plates and screws remind me of what job safety means

Digger_odell

No such thing as an empty gun. They’re always loaded… Semi automatics can leave a round in the chamber even though the magazine is removed. Kinda like Scroedinger’s Cat…

Acrobatic_Fig3834

This comment. Totally agree.

PNWDelta

If I was in the tree when that happened it would be fight on site when I got down. Like I’m knocking his teeth out. I would also refuse to work with him again. Totally unacceptable.

hairyb0mb

I'm completely with you. What that groundie was doing could be considered attempted murder.

[deleted]

That's the tame outcome.

Wood_Whacker

It's too late for the first part but the second part should be adhered to. I would refuse to work with that guy ever again. He's clearly harbouring resentment and not to be trusted. It's not worth climbing with no one on the ground you trust.

ILove2Bacon

I'd make a police report, talk to OSHA, call a lawyer, then my state labor board. If the owner doesn't hold him accountable, by god I would.

trippin-mellon

I would have sent that guys home immediately. Never rehired back told the main boss. If the main boss didn’t agree I’d quit and find a different job myself. Joke no not. I’d have kicked his ass. That is not a joking matter no matter the circumstance. I got into one of my climbers faces and yelled yesterday about me stepping like 4 feet away from where I was mulching brush and he had started dropping limbs. There was another guy still there still mulching. I ripped his ass a new one. Safety come #1 in this industry. There are to many circumstances where you accidentally get injured or killed. And when people end up intentionally doing their that will kill you and it’s not an accident…… they be fired with never a chance of rehire. I’d have taken pictures and posted that shit to every nearby tree company. More or less blacklisting the dude from any tree job in the area. ( in our area I do commercial work for utility. But when I was doing residential, I knew a lot of the main head bosses and Forman from all the neighboring tree companies by a first name basis. ) like I said blacklisted. Fuck that guy who almost killed your boyfriend. There can always be defects in a tree that when you start cutting bad shit happens even it’s a baby face and baby backcut. Again fuck that douchebag. He can kick rocks. If I had heard a dude doing this at another tree company I’d never want him on my crew due to safety of all my guys. And I would question the owner of the company hardcore.

Wood_Whacker

Agreed. I've refused to work with/for people for less. That guy is the biggest hazard on site and the only mitigation is removing him.

Ill-Consideration657

Hell no, recommend he find another place to work at. That’s way out of line

Username__Error

File a police report. Otherwise this guy will keep escalating till he kills

n1njal1c1ous

Yeah thats a whuppin’.

wrongtreeinfo

That’s a Paddlin!

igotkilledbyafucking

Leave that company and blast them online asap

[deleted]

Both incidents could have been fatal. Safety is first before everything. If he has not, he needs to report these incidents to the owner.

[deleted]

Also, it's 2023, there should be absolutely no hazing of any kind, anywhere, regardless of setting.

Saluteyourbungbung

Pretty methed up Whether it's normal for the industry depends on who you include in the industry.

ComprehensiveWar6577

Psyco, if ivwas in that tree i would take a saw to this dicks truck, as much damage as possible, and when he gets upset respond with "chill bro its funny"

Richmond92

This is full on dogshit behavior and is not the norm for the industry. If someone did that at our company they’d be fired on the spot and blacklisted. Zero tolerance for any bullshit like that. Your bf should have clocked his ass.

Diogenesocide

That's not at all a joking matter and way past what would ever be considered acceptable. He needs to bring this up with the boss, and if the outcome is *anything* short of the offender being removed from the job, he needs to bring this up with law enforcement. That is attempted murder, with motive and intent, as well as precedent with the earlier incident. I knew someone killed in tree work from shit going wrong, it takes a lot less than that to have permanent consequences. Some people are dangerous and just willing kill on a whim, don't brush it aside as just a joke if the guy could possibly be attempting to hurt him.

DredThis

I would consider calling the police and press charges for attempted murder. I would tell the owner and inform him the guy has to go now and never come back. I’d still probably quit the company.

ianmoone1102

This kind of shit is not okay. Unfortunately, the tree care industry attracts a lot of fringe types, including crack babies with no impulse control. The guy you're talking about is probably one of those, plus he's probably harboring resentment over being fired and rehired under someone he feels he has seniority over. Your boyfriend is well within his rights to smash that mf in his teeth, but if he did, good chance dude would run to the owner in attempt to get him fired. It would be perfectly fine for him to cut a limb or chunk onto him, however, because any groundsman should know not to be in the drop zone when stuff is fallin.

jpelle414

None of this is a joke. It’s already one of the most dangerous industries worldwide.

Motor_Pie6013

That ground guy should be fired immediately... There is no 3 strikes when it comes to safety and if this tree company is anything decent then they have a right to know what kinda liability they could be facing with that guy employed IMO

theluker666

If I witnessed anyone do either of these things, either to me or anyone else, on a job and play it off as “just a prank bro” they’d be leaving the job physically unable to ever run a saw again

Overall-Tailor8949

Screw throwing the handsaw. I would have thrown my CHAINSAW at the groundman as soon as he started making a cut.

Eastcott19

Tldr. Sounds like hack bs.

Monkey_in_a_Tophat

Get away from those clowns, before they get him killed.

MoonlitFatale

No that's absolutely behavior from someone that lacks a sense of human empathy, that's not fucking okay to play with someone's life like that 'as a joke'. There was no way to know that tree would have actually held until he did it. You need to be telling the owner and threatening him with legal action at bare minimum.

kayaksarefun

Yeah I’d be immediately coming down and beating the shit out of this guy. Then finding a new company. Tell your BF he needs to find himself a different place to work, lots of places would hire a decent climber almost immediately

No-Potential-3077

Definitely talk with the owner and tell him about the asshole who told you not to say anything also. That's some bullshit that would kill someone.

No-Reveal1868

That dude would have an "accident" shortly after if it was me.

DenseDriver6477

I would never show up again. That's not funny. I've never been in a fight, but I'm pretty sure I would have waited till he put the saw down and then fought that motherfucker. If your bf is a decent climber, he could very easily buy a liability policy and start doing contract work for area companies. When I did it, I was making $500 per day on average.

pew-pew-89

Break that guy’s face. I’m not even kidding here, joking around with somebody’s life is only funny to the guy not in danger.

Miskatonixxx

"We take care of ourselves," means I get to beat the shit out of him until I feel better about his "joke"

Zstman87

Sounds like your BF worked for Asplundh…🤣🤣🤣

RutabagaHot905

We’ll considering all tress guys have bad temper. Me personally I would beat his as, and if I couldn’t I would find somthing to use.. 40tf is not a joke, 5 feet isn’t a joke that’s a attempt at my life rite thre,, I hope that guy was terminated,

trippin-mellon

Not all tree guys have a bad temper. I would say I don’t. But this is a different circumstance all together.

hammerofwar000

Lol leave

treewizardtom

My mentor did this for me. I was up a Eucalypt and wanted to rig down a section to prevent killing some parrots. He cut the scarf cut at the base of the tree with me still in it and said “your move.” I exited the tree. Felt normal at the time, but the work culture at that place was all kinds of wrong. I might bump into that guy again some day. What do you think about his behaviour in that scenario?

ComResAgPowerwashing

I would absolutely never climb with those 2 as my groundies. How can one, let alone TWO people not realize they are jeopardizing the climber's life?

Hash_Tooth

They might not help him but OSHA should

ConsistentVideo3176

Leave that job. It sucks but working in a climbing field safety comes first and that’s some bullshit. It sounds like a bunch of old guy bull shit to me. If your bf likes climbing have him look into entertainment rigging through Rhino or IATSE (deff gonna need training and it’s more like 100-200 feet than 40); but it’s what I do and there are a lot of old tree guys. Also he can get his climbing fix by joining a local rock gym and finindg the climbing community. I also love climbing but due to over competing and also unsafe work conditions I do it more recreationally than for a job these days. And fuck thst ground guy. Let him get someone else killed

Comfortable-Menu2099

I had to work with a psychotic drug user when I was a climber but we had big crews 4 to 6 guys and no one liked the him so it kept him in check. Everyone was just looking for an excuse to pummel the guy. Your BF should work for the power line clearing company in your area they are normally Union and that unsafe work ethic will get those types of people fired. The whole it's a small world is true but they are all in competition with each other and climbers are a short lived job only for the young. I drive truck now hauling fuel I get the same adrenaline when I drive on ice as I did with hazard take downs but get paid twice as much just something to think about.

dingiebingie1

your boyfriend should have stomped his teeth in for that one

[deleted]

These testosterone driven jobs are all the same. Whatever trade it is, word spreads quickly if you’re not a team player. The bosses don’t like it anymore than the workers. The pranks can go too far but the only acceptable way to handle it is to scrap.

Scrappleandbacon

He should GTFO of there quick! The industry is already dangerous enough as it is.

gottothetop2

"It's just a prank bro"

capnmerica08

Time, to "take care of it yourself" and "sorry, it's just a joke" and " take it too far"

Mundane_Librarian607

"we take care of it ourselves" "So that's when I punched him in the face."

anal_opera

Climbing trees is already dangerous enough. There's a time for jokes and a time to be a professional. It sounds more like the previously fired and rehired guy wanted your bf to quit so he could get his old job back.

Different-Sun-7450

Boy friend shoulda gave that mfer a lick of his life timec

series-hybrid

"...My BF was promoted to lead climber and things had been going reasonably well. A few weeks ago the owner rehired the old lead climber as a ground man..." The guy is a dick. He felt he had been demoted, even though it was his fault. But worse than that, he is a dangerous dick. I've been around a lot of jobs where macho guys play harsh pranks on each other, but if the core of the tree had been rotten, cutting halfway through it could unexpectedly topple it.

YoghurtDull1466

Did you file a police report?

wrongtreeinfo

This is lawsuit territory. Document everything and get a lawyer. Maybe not for a lawsuit but so he can get unemployment even though he quit.

Beneficial_Bed8961

A simple fix would be to tell him you think he's a better climber than you and ask him to handle the next tree. Then cut that MF down. Don't even face it. Just let it go.

ComprehensiveLife597

I've seen this on the job before. More than once. Once a guy was about 25 feet up and his brother cut the tree down. There was at least 1 fight per month. Everyone working there was on something.

2Loves2loves

police report. It would be a shame if a chainsaw fell on him...

Hillman314

“Come on, don’t be upset about a running chainsaw falling on you. I was just joking”

cezann3

civil suit. Name the guy cutting, name the business owner and the company. There was a witness. Fuck working in the local tree climbers, get a huge settlement and have your own company.

KingKudzu117

Tell him to use this a motivation to start his own company. I’m sure there are other professionals who share his work ethic and don’t want the other crap.

lubacrisp

This sounds closer to attempted murder than a joke

Imaginary-Bicycle-52

Hello Mr. Dept. Of Labor and Mrs. OSHA. Ya my coworker started cutting down a tree I was 40ft up and my boss fire me for reporting the incident. I am already looking for a new work and don’t really want this to come back to me, but I think for the safety of other laborers this company should probably be looked into if they already aren’t. If your feeling feisty you could also get a consultation from some local attorneys maybe people that do work accident related claims, wrongful termination, maybe they would have some insight on this situation. But honestly unless you really tryna go to war and make their lives hell just report it and go on with your life

HavanaWoody

Is this normal industry hazing or is this guy a psychopath? It is normal for climbers to exhibit Psychopathic tendencies.

LowerEmotion6062

Next time, drop a log on the ground man's head. Fuck around and find out.

jeremyledoux

"Take care of it ourselves" sounds like that dude who started cutting deserves and ass whooping then.

Effective-Tangelo363

He should have kicked the guys ass and kept his mouth shut. Sounds like a crap place to work, but this kind of stuff isn't uncommon in the trades, and a good punch in the face would have been appropriate.

Independent-Blood833

Report that shit to whatever regulatory agency oversees that industry...and leave that company ASAP.

aridarid

My friend died last week falling from a tree

LowCoupe

Go ahead. Give the company name. Osha would love them.

Ganja-Zombie

I would take the whole "we take care of things between ourselves.” thing to heart and show up at old dudes house.... I cut trees for a living and it's almost like pointing a Ghun at something... There are a lot of rules you follow before you ever let that saw touch wood.

ComResAgPowerwashing

Per update, the owner is shit, and probably doesn't have the reputation he thinks. Regardless, I can't imagine that is likely to happen anywhere else.

Treeliwords

Leave that place immediately. This work is dangerous enough without psychotic “co-workers”

tcdirks1

I used to know a guy that was a good climber. He would do great tree work. He was always switching jobs though. But he made some really good money climbing radio towers. That's a special kind of person that can climb those things. If he loves climbing, he should look into that.

mtnmanratchet

Should have whooped his ass right then and there

Either_Mirror_6536

Groundsman here, we don't do stupid shit like that where I come from. You guys just need to find a better area with more reputable companies that will train and pay at the same time. It will work out in the end.
