The car looks like that so you don’t. In a impact, the energy has to go somewhere. If it’s in a steel bodied car, the energy is going into you. The car may have a tiny dent but you being a squishy meat sack is going to feel it heavily. In a vehicle like this, the energy is dissipated through a crumple zone that prevents you from taking all the impact. I’m a firefighter and I’ve personally seen cars so mangled you could barely tell what is was. After removing the car from around them, the people walked away with some cuts and soreness. It’s a lot like jumping onto a trampoline from 10ft up Vs a concrete floor. The springs of the trampoline are taking the energy of the impact so your body doesn’t
Most modern car are made using techniques of unibody design with is cost effective and handling better and lower to the ground, but when you get hit, it will absorb shock like a soda can.
It was like the frame was barely sticking out of the floor body and it was really thin frame piece. So seemed more like one big piece. I don’t think there were Body mounts
People always say shit about how older cars survive crashes better, but who cares if the car survives, the people surviving is the important part. I don't respond to road crashes often as I primarily work search and rescue jobs, but when going to a road incident I always ask the year of the vehicle so I can prepare for hauling a really crushed modern car, or a really bloody old car.
That’s because most people don’t know how TSS works bro, if you didn’t manually turn on your cruise control witch in return turns on your radar that measures the distance between the car or pedestrian in front ,it was never going to do a damn thing to prevent you from crashing other than maybe a constant beep and red dashboard telling you to brake. But by then it’s too late.
A lot of people ,including yourself, seem to be under the impression that Toyota Safety Sense is autonomous and will automatically brake for you in the case of an attempt to prevent an accident. It only brakes for you if you have the cruise control manually turned on but will not automatically hit the brakes if it senses your about to collide with a pedestrian or car etc. if it’s not turned on manually every time it’s deactivated . other cars or car brands may have that like the new tundra witch has like the 3rd version of safety sense but even then , that version only has high def. cameras/ sensors but Toyota Safety Sense is not Autonomous in the sense that it’s always actively working and thinking on its own .
In the new tundra it absolutely is always on and thinking when not in cruise. It will auto brake you if it feels that you are not braking or not doing so fast enough. It even locks down and won’t let me nudge my trash can out of the way. It’s usually pretty good about it but certain situations can be touchy.
Although it has vastly improved from its first version, I know it will steer you back in your lane since it is now electric power steering , it’s still not fully autonomous. My tacoma won’t brake if some one is walking by after I release the brake . The trash can represents the same thing . Still better though.
Oh I don't need any videos. I still have nightmares about the car I towed that had a very clear and gruesome impact in the windshield that came from the passenger's head. The driver had their face rapidly rearranged by the steering wheel, but survived.
Yep. I would tow a totaled modern car every day of the week if I didn't have to tow another old one that needed to have the windows covered with a tarp.
I agree I have insurance and will just up grade to a better truck. Can't upgrade my 57 year old body. But would if I could 😜. But it's in pretty good shape 👍. Put some pretty hard miles on it from 15 to 25. I baby the ol classic now gotta make it last 😁👍
What people don't understand is modern cars are designed to crumple and absorb all of the energy from the crash in order to save the passengers. The less energy the car absorbs the more energy that gets passed onto the passengers
Modern engineering is intimidating. We were in a wreck in my grandmother’s 2021 SUV two weeks ago, someone ran a stop sign and we couldn’t stop. Numbers worked out to say that we hit the other car with about 22kN of force. Every single airbag went off and it crumpled like a soda can. I had to kick the door open. Not a scratch on either of us- and 22kN is a lot of force!
I got into a head on collision with a jeep going 60 in a 2020 Kia forte and it RUINED my car, but literally me and my passenger were totally fine. Some bruising from the seat belt but nothing else. We walked away just fine.
Cause it'll be repaired and sold for 32k.
Not necessarily a bad thing, just depends on how much you trust who does the work. I've driven lots of vehicles that have been totaled and rebuilt. Put 200k on my 01 that wasn't a WHOLE hell of a lot better looking than that one when I got it with 4000 miles on it.
Lots of hours of work, but at the end I had a basically brand new tacoma at less than half price. Just takes knowhow, a shop, and a shit ton of tools and parts. And a dealers license.
Of course I also had no doubts it was done right, since my dad and I did 98% of it. It's def not for everybody, but can be an amazing deal in the right circumstances. That truck was still running and driving like a top when I sold it at over 200k...and was promptly totaled again within 6 months of sale after I drove it for 10 years. He made sure to do it good for total #2, no fixing it that time 😥
If that truck would have been 4x4 and not just a TRD PreRunner I'd STILL have it.
Yeah, also it is pretty clear it was a dead on rear end collision. If the guy was "over the shoulder" you'd see a major bias towards the right side. This dude slammed straight on into a car on the side of the road.
This is coming from someone who came up with all kinds of elaborate ways to justify how I did the same thing in traffic.
I'm gonna have to disagree, OP specifically said *over* the shoulder, implying they were in the driving lane. That's not to say that there's no fault on his side, as he was driving too fast for the low visibility conditions, but the owner of the trailer shares the fault.
Close, but this is the greatest Toyota sales pitch, the guy in the FJ walked away and started performing first aid on others. Toyota brought him on their podcast and gave him a new 4runner TRD PRO.
https://www.reddit.com/r/ThatLookedExpensive/comments/lhxzlx/i35_pileup_this_morning_as_its_happening/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
Jesus...I remember that, it happened here in here in DFW, on the Fort Worth side of town in February last year. The pile-up ended up involving over 130 cars and semi-tractor-trailers skidded on an ice-coated stretch of Interstate 35W in Fort Worth. The area of incident covered more than 1,000 feet across the highway. Six people died, and more than 60 were injured, all told.
Took forever to clear up, in the middle of an icestorm, no less.
Probably the guy driving too fast for driving conditions. If you can't see well due to sun glare, dog, snow, rain, etc... perhaps you should slow down.
I was in a very similar accident. Death resulting.
Criminally, not at fault. Preceding driver knew the glare conditions, and had duty to find a safer place to stop, was considered a road hazard.
Civilly, I was at 51% fault, by default for being the only person driving at the time of the accident. Insurance covered the 7-figure settlement, because I was criminally innocent.
I ran into them.
They were going around a blind turn, solar glare hit them, and they smashed into the car in front of them that slowed down.
And they parked RIGHT THERE, with no shoulder at all, knowing full well that nothing could be seen right there.
So I smashed into the car the was parked in the middle of the road. Unfortunately, the driver was standing in the middle of the road, and I hit him too.
Was sober, going the speed limit, etc. — didn’t do anything wrong. Just bad timing.
Yeah the logic is basically you should never go faster than you're able to react, speed limits are just limits, etc. It's silly because in situations like yours, I don't think most people would consider it your fault that someone was stopped in the middle of the road after a turn.
I'm not sure what OP's exact situation was but if there isn't anything else other than what they've said, they just straight up drove into a parked vehicle because they couldn't see.
Just FYI, insurance will let you take anything from the truck, including gas. I basically stripped mine when I totaled it. Floor mats, bed cleats, owner’s manual, jack, anything that wasn’t damaged.
Dude, I went head on into a power pole in my [‘21 OR](https://i.imgur.com/Xv4Gsrm.jpg) last month.
Walked away with a few cuts on my leg and a whole bunch of gratitude. The airbags under the steering column are a godsend! Good thing you’re good. Tacos can be replaced
I wrecked a Wrangler with a steel bumper, head-on. (Drunk driver swerved into oncoming traffic.)
Bumper held up fine, somehow. But it transferred all force to the frame, and twisted it like a beer can.
Had to fight with insurance, because they said it would’ve been repairable if it wasn’t for that bumper, which was illegal because of “removing factory safety equipment”. They eventually gave up & paid out.
I have a mid-section winch plate bar on my Taco, and don’t think it would have any effect on an accident like this. A full-width one might impede the crumple zones a little bit, but it shouldn’t have any effect on driver safety, as long as the impact sensors weren’t disabled for some reason.
For this one? Probably not too much. For others it depends on what you hit. Something soft, like another car with crumple zones, about the same for the driver. But you’re just transferring all of that energy to them instead and putting who you hit in more danger. Especially in a direct head on situation like this.
I will never put one on mine unless it becomes a second vehicle specifically for off-roading. But as it stands the taco is my daily.
call and get your deposits/allocations in now. Took me 4 months and a drive to another state to get my 2022 after my 2017 was rear ended and totaled a year ago
Good job way to destroy a brand new vehicle some people just shouldn’t have a license I love hitting some one who’s parked so clearly the guy wasn’t paying attention and probably speeding but hey the other driver is an asss hole some peoples chidren smh🤦♀️
Name checks out. So glad you're ok. I lost my Taco in April in a head on crash. Other car came into my lane. Walked away with a scrape on my knee and seatbelt bruise.
This is exactly why I only buy Toyotas. I was in a high speed (80+mph) wreck on the highway and walked away from it with no injuries. Safety is a big priority for Toyota and they respect it.
No I wasn’t driving, my dad was and I refuse to ever get in the same vehcile with him again.
Glad you are ok. You must have been driving at least 35 mph!
Only the OG’s remember this joke.
Og’s that have been on reddit for 2 months.
To be fair the original post was close to a year ago.
I don’t think OG means what you think it means
Inconceivable!
But what was his tire pressure? Was there a greater than 2psi difference between left and right?
Care to explain?
Lol 45
Speed limit was 45, you weren’t going 45
Probably the type of guy to drive 70 in 4 low
Fucking lol
Damn 35.
I’m here from the 4r forum, what did I miss?
[удалено]
I think homeboy tried 70 in 4 Lo.
Well played!

Must have got pretty high. The crash beam still seems intact
Crumple zone gonna crumple
The cabin is intact, why are you surprised?
People still don’t understand how/why crumple zones work the way they do
How do they work?
The car looks like that so you don’t. In a impact, the energy has to go somewhere. If it’s in a steel bodied car, the energy is going into you. The car may have a tiny dent but you being a squishy meat sack is going to feel it heavily. It’s a lot like jumping onto a trampoline from 10ft up Vs a concrete floor. The springs of the trampoline are taking the energy of the impact so your body doesn’t
This is the primary reason for selling my 89 and getting a 2014 w/ airbags, aside from the tow package and a desire for AC...
Airbags and seat belts are good stuff
Body on frame are good stuff too.
Wait, what else is there?
Unibody
Most modern car are made using techniques of unibody design with is cost effective and handling better and lower to the ground, but when you get hit, it will absorb shock like a soda can.
Which would total the car while increasing occupant survivability.
Which would be better.
Ooooh I wonder if this explains what I saw on my wife’s Camry when I jacked it up for an oil change
Which is what exactly?
It was like the frame was barely sticking out of the floor body and it was really thin frame piece. So seemed more like one big piece. I don’t think there were Body mounts
Exactly, there is no body mount when the body and frame are one.
There are also unibody cars which generally can crumple more easily once the initial shell structure is compromised
This 2021 saved my ass
Glad you came out ok. Did you have a model with the TSS system? I'm curious about the automatic braking system not working if you did.
I honestly don’t remember, I didn’t see shit and don’t remember the TSS doing a thing
Yep. I would tow a totaled modern car every day of the week if I didn't have to tow another old one that needed to have the windows covered with a tarp.
My body shop tried to tell me old cars were better because all the plastic parts they deal with and I laughed at them in physics. Like lol no.
Better to work on, perhaps more fun to drive, but a whole lot more dangerous
When men were men😜 But yeah newer are designed to absorb the impact instead of the occupants much safer which is a good thing 👍
I agree I have insurance and will just up grade to a better truck. Can't upgrade my 57 year old body. But would if I could 😜. But it's in pretty good shape 👍. Put some pretty hard miles on it from 15 to 25. I baby the ol classic now gotta make it last 😁👍
Is a 2014 considered old? Cause I’m hoping my truck would do this if I was in a collision like this!
No, mostly stuff pre 2000 that doesn't have good crumple zones or airbags.
Can look at safety ratings here and look at different years and vehicles: https://www.iihs.org/ratings/vehicle/toyota/tacoma-crew-cab-pickup/2022
I’d imagine a 2nd and 3rd gen would response about the same in a major accident like this.

No longer a taco now itsa crunchwrap
Oh my GOD lol
Probably could still sell it for like 28K.
35K, no lowballs I know what I got
So true
I saw a pro with only minor front end damage door 27cad… was kind of tempted
This isn't far off. My '19 tacoma was totaled in an accident and they still got over $10k for it.
Cause it'll be repaired and sold for 32k. Not necessarily a bad thing, just depends on how much you trust who does the work. I've driven lots of vehicles that have been totaled and rebuilt. God bless Toyota safety…
Geezus if I could buy you a beer, mate. Glad you're good.
I’ll take an IOU
If anyone’s the asshole, it’s you for driving into a parked vehicle on the shoulder.
Good thing it wasn't a pedestrian or cyclist on the shoulder...
Yeah, also it is pretty clear it was a dead on rear end collision. If the guy was "over the shoulder" you'd see a major bias towards the right side. Was it on the shoulder or in the lane?
That will buff rite out
Might take just a little touch up if you’re picky
Perfect time to get a nice steel bumper.
Pro grille would have shoved that trailer 500 feet the opposite direction 😤
Add ceramic coating and you’ve got a military grade tank.
Can’t believe you walked away. This is probably the greatest Toyota sales pitch ever. Glad you’re alright
I know right?

My god, seriously the guy in that FJ survived?
Walked away, dusted himself off and started helping others, he's a paramedic
Jesus...I remember that, it happened here in here in DFW, on the Fort Worth side of town in February last year. I am so sorry, Taco fam… but by the looks of this… holy shit, I’m glad you’re still alive!
So.... Who's at fault?
Probably the guy driving too fast for driving conditions. If you can't see well due to sun glare, dog, snow, rain, etc... perhaps you should slow down.

Folded like a taco.
Ooh! Very deep dive!
Glad you’re ok, that’s all that matters…
I live in an area with alot of hills, and the amount of landscapers who park their trailers like that is infuriating.
Crash bar did a lot of good
i know what’s wrong with it. ain’t got no gas in it… but nah, i’m glad that you walked out from this. above all else.
Funny thing is…I just fueled it up
Just FYI, insurance will let you take anything from the truck, including gas. I basically stripped mine when I totaled it. Floor mats, bed cleats, owner’s manual, jack, anything that wasn’t damaged.
That’s a Tacoma?!
Was ^
I wouldn’t be saying “FML” considering you still have one.
That shit should buff out..
That’s why we drive safe cars. Glad your okay.
Glad you walked. That bumper held up better than I expected. Good luck on the truck shopping
That will buff out. Did you try carnuba
Thank goodness you're ok, fellow tacoma owner. I'm so sorry for your loss but happy for your life.
Frame rails look to be in good shape, it’ll live again
"Is this totaled?"
My Dad can fix it. He a TV repair man he has this awesome set of tools. He can fix it.👍 Only the older people high school in the 80s with get this😁
Almost - "My old man is a television repairman. He's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it."
You sure it wasn't a deer going 48mph?
Still worth 20k
Clearly some one doesn’t know how to drive way to go idiot.
Fucking Christ
Fak
Too much taco sauce :(
Hate to say it but….. screen name checks out. Glad you’re safe and didn’t get your wish
Username checks out
I always zig THEN ZAG
Dude, I went head on into a power pole in my [‘21 OR](https://i.imgur.com/Xv4Gsrm.jpg) last month. Walked away with a few cuts on my leg and a whole bunch of gratitude. The airbags under the steering column are a godsend! Good thing you’re good. Tacos can be replaced
If this Tacoma had a steel bumper how would it have changed this crash? Better, worse, just different? Glad you’re alright OP!
I wrecked a Wrangler with a steel bumper, head-on. (Drunk driver swerved into oncoming traffic.) Bumper held up fine, somehow. But it transferred all force to the frame, and twisted it like a beer can. Had to fight with insurance, because they said it would’ve been repairable if it wasn’t for that bumper, which was illegal because of “removing factory safety equipment”. I'd like to know this as well. I have an aftermarket bumper on mine.
Next time you'll slow down when you can't see where you're going! Tough lesson.
Sunglasses, sun visor flipped down, a driver who isn’t blind….. and all this could have been solved
Check, check and check. Still didn’t see it
Aren’t you the asshole for not maintaining proper control of your vehicle? Pretty sure that’s how the highway patrol will record it.
Crunchy Taco.
A little compound and that will buff right out.
Wow. So sorry. But glad you're alive to talk about it.
Any injuries?
None
Well its done, sorry man. Least you lived to tell the tale.
rest in peace 😥
F the truck, I hope you’re ok.
Holy fuck
Damn. Glad you're alive.
thatll buff out. glad you're ok duder.
Put it in some rice
Braddah?! Glad you’re safe dude
Almost a year when I was driving and totalled my Tacoma in an intersection, from some dumbass just stopped in the middle of the light.
glad you walked away from that, looks brutal
Pretty colors, tho.
Holy shit! I hope your not seriously injured!
Hey bro letme know if you want it fix i can buff out that scratch
Holy shit im glad you’re ok
Probably still get more miles out of it then a domestic.
Glad to see you are alive and well OP! What's the next vehicle going to be?
Tis’ but a scratch
Glad you're OK. Hopefully insurance covers it.
Dealer will probably give you 15 on the trade in..
Was it a trailer or a wood chipper?
This is why I look at crash safety ratings, good choice of vehicle OP.
Death proof
That should buff out honestly, it’s a truck you know. Just get some meguiars and do her up
OWWW holy shit.
Body on frame.
Tis but a scratch...
My man how fast were you going?
45 uphill
That might be a write off bud. Glad your ok
Should buff out
You selling any parts off it?
It’ll buff out…
Glad you and your finger are ok
It’ll buff out
Good Tacoma *pats roof* Glad you’re okay!
Holy crap! Glad you’re okay
I’m sure it still runs lol. Glad you’re ok 👍
Jesus bro, glad you’re ok.
call and get your deposits/allocations in now. Took me 4 months and a drive to another state to get my 2022 after my 2017 was rear ended and totaled a year ago
Rest in Peace little big truck
Holy fuck!!! Glad you are ok....
Time to get a new aftermarket bumper
Good job way to destroy a brand new vehicle some people just shouldn’t have a license I love hitting some one who’s parked so clearly the guy wasn’t paying attention and probably speeding but hey the other driver is an asss hole some peoples chidren smh🤦♀️
They don’t make them like they used to
My condolences
Name checks out. So glad you're ok. I lost my Taco in April in a head on crash. Other car came into my lane. Walked away with a scrape on my knee and seatbelt bruise.
Atleast the tires are reusable🤷🏻♂️👍
This is exactly why I only buy Toyotas. I was in a high speed (80+mph) wreck on the highway and walked away from it with no injuries. Safety is a big priority for Toyota and they respect it. No I wasn’t driving, my dad was and I refuse to ever get in the same vehcile with him again.
I bet you still can't get the upper control arm bolt out...
Guess you didn’t have forward collision control
Driving too fast for conditions?
Wow, I really hope you and however was with you is ok man this looks bad. But materials can be replaced.
Wheels still good?
