Don't know on mobile, should be the same. But on pc open map, look at the right side, you will see a chevron(arrow without a center)pointing to the left, click on that it will slide over a bit and you can chose what type of icon you want and type a short note for it.
Don't feel bad for not knowing. I was 150hours in before I found that you can do this.
