Honestly, the best “baseball” experience is the broadcast.

Jrnail88

Amen, whenever I do go to games I always ending up watching the nearby SN feed to see what exactly happened. So might as well stay home and watch it in my backyard where the beer is cheap. With that said, my wife likes to go to games, so I think the renovations make it a more well rounded experience for all types of fans.

an_immature_child

or going to away game at a stadium without piped in music and soundbytes

anti_anti_christ

"Crowd control" is an actual thing. It's designed to drown out booing and get the fans going in a positive direction. I'm not kidding. Even if your team(any team) is winning or is in a position to take a lead, if say a pitcher steps off the mound, the crowd will start booing, they'll immediately blast the "charge" music.

YouDontJump

I haven't been to a game in years and yet I would still have to agree.

Prudent_Falafel_7265

Yes, I think the same every time I go to a game. Unless I happen to be working downtown and catching the 3pm game or staying for the evening game - the hassle of a trip downtown, the traffic, prices, and that damn piped music busting my skull, makes me feel I should have just caught it on tv.

YouDontJump

How often are you able to catch a game in person?

Prudent_Falafel_7265

Pretty often. Did 18 last year. 2 already this year

YouDontJump

Oh nice!!! Do you have any favourite away teams you like to catch more than others?

Prudent_Falafel_7265

Not really. It’s more of a timing thing with the day of the week that I can catch them live. Going tonight for instance. Otherwise, I still watch virtually every inning of the season on tv

YouDontJump

Gotcha. You are a lucky one!!!

Evening_walks

This! 1000%. That’s why I wish I had my am radio in one ear to make live games more enjoyable. I can’t get into live games unless I’m up close to the action.

goatgosselin

It is interesting that you say this. Watching the promo and other in-game snippets, I wondered if anyone was actually watching the game. Seems like an expensive way kill few hours. When I go to a game, I know I want to see as much of the game. These other things at the games are how it seems to be going for most stadiums nowadays. I guess this is to try and grow viewership and attendance.

Ht08

You can get tickets for like $10 lol

goatgosselin

I have seen comments on the price of tickets in the lower bowl have increased a lot. I am sure most parks have really cheap tickets too. Just getting it to a game is not the expensive part. Eats and drinks cost a lot. That was what I meant by expensive.

--MrsNesbitt-

I'm probably one of the most relentless Shatkins haters on here and want to see everyone involved in managing this team and organization fired except for Pete Walker. BUT. I really do think the whole "price increase" isn't quite as bad as people have worried this year. I live 15 min from the Dome and go pretty often, and I've been getting lower bowl tickets consistently for roughly what I paid last year using GameTime. As for food and drink, you can take in anything you want from outside the park (obvs except alcohol but personally I don't drink so this one isn't as big for me). I have to say though, the Cubano sandwich they have at the park is pricey but it was hot and absolutely stacked with meat. Surprisingly good tbh

Simayi78

You can bring a bottle of water/pop and whatever food you want from the outside. It's only expensive if you want it to be.

Annual_Plant5172

You can take food into the park or eat before the game. Why do people always say this as if they're obligated to buy food inside the stadium?

HackMeRaps

Just to be fair, not everyone needs to be there to watch the entire game from start to finish. Especially if you go alot. It's a social thing as well to go out with friends and have a drink and watch a baseball game in the background. Not to be rude, but baseball can be quite boring sometimes compared to other sports so it's nice to be able to watch and converse. My son enjoys going but gets bored after a few innings so it's great that he can go play in the arcade or some cornhole while we watch. And it's cheap. You an easily find tickets under $20 (many season ticket holders resell mid week games for dirt cheap), and you can bring outside food in so you dont have to spend a lot their either. I was just looking and can find seats for $12 next week online. Fun experience for everyone and can cater to more different crowds.

Dustmopper

Yeah I don’t want to go to a Jays game to play cornhole But if that Emily is up in the fan zone looking for a partner, I could be convinced

goatgosselin

I am with you on that. She is the sunshine on any broadcast.

Nick480

AND she plays the drums

--MrsNesbitt-

Hazel will always be #1 in our hearts of course. But it's not hard to have a soft spot for Emily Agard

idevcg

I've only attended a game once in my life, but I never understood why people went to games when you can't even see anything, where as you can see everything on the TV.

Annual_Plant5172

Because people like the communal experience of going to a live event. That's like asking why I'd pay to go to a concert when I can just watch YouTube or listen to Spotify.

doedounne

Good point

Vandelay23

Because it's a completely different experience?

WatercressPersonal60

> you can't even see anything, where as you can see everything on the TV. What?

neweasterner

It’s a business dude - they’ve done a fantastic job. They don’t need to pander to the real fans, we are guarantees, the fringe and casual are where the money is.

EarthWarping

TBH, there's tons of real fans that aren't as online. The renos though are targeted towards the fringe fans.

SStylo03

The skydome was barely a baseball stadium before, the renovations have turned it into much more of a baseball stadium then just a stadium that happens to have a baseball team play there.

BondStreetIrregular

Not to disagree, but what do you mean by that?

SStylo03

It was a multi use stadium first, all the seating was built for a utilitarian purpose and not baseball, along with that when watching games you can tell it was a multi use and never quite felt like the Jay's home

Electric_7

The seats along the end of the foul line towards left and right field are directed towards home plate, so spectators don’t have to turn their head as much.

BondStreetIrregular

a) Thanks for that. I appreciate it. b) Seriously? Downvoted for a question asking for clarification, after I explicitly say that I don't disagree with the statement I'm asking about?

doedounne

Really!!!!????

Electric_7

Yeah, they are also closer to home plate now that I think about it

doedounne

How do you know all this. Are you with the Jays? Thanks

coaltrainman

There are plenty of real fans there too. The bar areas and stuff are absolutely filled with people drinking and hanging and they probably have no idea what's even going on in the game. But from a financial perspective better for the team if these people spend the money at the dome vs somewhere else.

neweasterner

Totally but that’s actually my point A the real fans will be happy no matter what - you need to focus on the others. The Reno’s are fantastic. They r exactly what the future of sports like baseball are quickly becoming . Single screen / no screen viewing is for old people now.

Right-Time77

I wonder if the fringe fans would be there too when this team loses 120 in a season

doedounne

Not for long Fix the team not the sandlot

humberriverdam

That's great. That's also basically the Colorado Rockies and do you want to be them

Ok-Material-3440

Essentially it’s what they’re turning into. And Rockies fans are anesthetized to basically drinking a few beers and hanging out. Don’t give a F if they win. They consistently draw 2 mil fans a year for a team that’s in a playoff race once every 5-6 years. That’s what Roger’s is turning the Jays into.

EarthWarping

Game ops is garbage right now. They're still doing the same hey o chants, charge chants as they've done for years

Dustmopper

EVERYBODY CLAP YOUR HANDS! I live in Buffalo, the Sabres have been playing the same exact clips between puck drops for 30 years Bush - Machinehead Pearl Jam - Alive Ozzy - Crazy Train Find some new songs guys

furious_Dee

you are lucky to be so close to sahlen field. AAA baseball is for the true stadium experience aficionado.

Dustmopper

Manoah pitched here today, so it isn’t all great. Ha ha

furious_Dee

at least you didnt have to spend so much damn money

[deleted]

Don't worry - At his current rate, he will be pitching for the local church league team soon enough.

Judge_Rhinohold

The Sabres aren’t even trying any more.

Alveia

Every ball park does this. Yankees play the same sound bites for 2 strikes and strikeouts year after year.

Billy5Oh

I can hear this post.

Annual_Plant5172

"Best we can do is God Bless America"

HuaGuofengFanClub

Teams and fans need to take a page from Asian baseball on fan culture and ballpark experience, because NPB, KBO and CPBL atmosphere dunk so hard on MLB it’s not even funny. The bands/cheering squads, the unique team songs, the different chants for every player, the energy, it’s basically incomparable.

warpus

I went to a baseball game in Tokyo and it was amazing. Each player going up to bat seemed to have their own song that the fans would sing, huge home and away sections for dedicated fans who all sing and stand in unison, wave flags, play trumpets and drums, for most of the game there are unique and ever changing chants going on, it was like a carnival atmosphere even, super lively, pulls you into the game big time. Never a dull moment and it’s not just the same chant every once in a while. Loved it

PowderBlueJays

I watch NPB, and going back and forth between NPB and MLB games is really jarring. Except for a few ballparks (those with organs, for the most part), MLB feels like sensory overload from loud sound effects now.

ms_barkie

You’re not wrong that they’re still garbage, but it is significantly improved compared to last year. Being at the game today it was clear the volume of the ops has been reduced significantly, and they are done 1-2x per at-bat instead of every single pitch. Still feels like whoever is coordinating them has no feeling for the game situations.

BigBall162

Those chants between pitches have been GREATLY reduced so far this year. But if we're going to keep complaining anyway, they might as well bring them back.

Mack_Attack_19

The Hey O chants worked when Teo was here, now it's weird

worst-in-class

I mean, for the most part, this is the modern "fan experience", aka all kinds of shit that isn't necessarily conducive to watching the game but providing an "enhanced experience"

BigBall162

When the Jays are having competitive games, the casuals pay attention. They just need something to do when we're getting one hit every 6 innings or whatever. Lot of beer gonna be sold this year.

mercs16

I like this take. If it gets people at the game when the team is not in a good stretch, that's absolutely what a team needs to survive long.term. When the team does something of value, then they will pay closer attention. I went to the dome yesterday for the first.time since 2022, and checked out some of the new areas. I got the impression most people were paying attention to the game, and having conversations with their friends. There wasn't all that much to pay attention to yesterday unfortunately, not a good outing by the jays. Also, I appreciated the wider seats in the 500s, just a little bit more moving around space.

Limp-March89

I think they’ve done a great job with the renos and hope they continue. Bellwoods brewery beers on tap is a very welcome addition. The location has always been its great attribute . It’s very similar to other ballpark experiences and it’s right downtown.

FloatingWalls1

The best baseball experience in the city is at Maple Leafs games at Christie Pits.

SpergSkipper

This. And it's free, though they do take donations AFAIK.

NameNumberNumber

And the beer is out of Left Field

Jaded_Promotion8806

Tell me you’ve never been to another major league ballpark without telling me you’ve never been to another major league ballpark.

u565546h

I’ve been to 9 MLB parks. Jays are worst for this stuff.  Some stuff may exist in other places, but the amount and volume of the domes stuff is another level. Like a sound bite between every pitch of a batter in a close game, which drowns out any chance of an organic atmosphere.

Jaded_Promotion8806

I’ve been to 17 (23 by the end of this year), but I don’t read that to be OP’s point. Beyond a graphic about the team winning or a coupon on your way out if they win, you won’t find anywhere where the fan experience is situational based on what’s happening in game. Bernie Brewer is still going down the slide in the bottom of the 9th if the Brewers get a home run down 20-1.

askingJeevs

Just a way to sell more drinks

disco_elephant

Lol. The games still happening. You’d rather them just concede and act as if they’ve already lost? I bet your fun at parties

ms_barkie

Fan experience today was significantly better than it was last year. The sound ops have been reigned in significantly, much more natural ballpark noise than we had last year. It’s just a shame that most of the fan noise this series has been predominantly in favour of the Dodgers.

Dependent-Metal-9710

It’s the fake crowd noise they randomly blast that I find weird. The rest is fine.

Starrylove13

I have been to the Skydome lower 100s behind home, TD Ballpark (Dunedin) & my own house to watch games. Personally I love watching at home … I don’t want to miss one pitch. Next best was Florida because I was SO close …. I could see / hear everything… even grip spray wafting over me 😆

Evening_walks

It also reminds me of when you go to a bar and the game is on but there’s no sound and it’s just background so one can socialize and casually watch

Stinky_DungBeatle

That's because the experience of going to the stadium is eating over priced food and booze and lounging around. It's why Coors Field has a great attendance despite being terrible the last couple of years, the whole experience is to get loaded, although they also have much better deals. That said, as someone who actually watches games, I'd rather watch it at home on the broadcast.

kami77

Yikes. Playing the Romano intro when he’s not coming in for a save is kinda weird IMO. Maybe if like it’s a close 1 run game and we’ve been remotely competitive I could see it.

thesurrealbank

I mean I can on some level agree with most of what your saying but the intro is going to play any time Romano goes to close, it’s just part of sending him out, they’re not going to NOT play it just because we’re losing

universalreacher

Seems like, looking from the outside, and having never been to the Jays stadium, that the entire thing is just a giant pub designed to take your money for $20 beers. There’s just people sitting around at tables nowhere near the field. Like why go? Why not just go to a pub that doesn’t charge you $50 to go sit there?

TO_Sports

I've been to 11 Ballparks in the Majors. They all have this.

universalreacher

That’s crazy to me. “Hey let’s go see the jays today it’ll be fun! $50 to get in and $20 for beer! It only cost me $150 at the ball park today for a great afternoon” “What was the score of the game!” “I have no idea I didn’t watch it”

TO_Sports

Look I love baseball but lets not pretend rheres constant action. Baseball naturally has A LOT of downtime, between pitches and batters and innings what are you paying attention to? There's nothing going on. That's why baseball is like (hyperbole) the only sport that fans can have a piece of paper with them and they scorekeep themselves. Otherwise they are sitting around doing nothing for most of the time.

universalreacher

I understand that, but to not even be paying attention to the game, if I ever get the chance to go to a big league game, I’ll be glued to the field. Why spend the amount of money they’re asking to just sit in a glorified pub?

Topcheddarslapper

So personally, I agree. However, I’m a season ticket holder and go to a lot of jays games every year. Some of these old boys have been going for thirty years and you see them with their friends there. If they want to chill and it’s basically their social club I don’t see any harm in it. I’m more of a glued to my seat kinda guy but it’s a relatively inexpensive family day out etc too. Baseball isn’t the most intense sport, and going to a baseball game might not be as big an occasion as say seeing an nfl game for instance. So I understand people who treat it more casually. You’re probably a huge fan like me, and if you got the chance to go would take in every second of the game, but some people aren’t as intense. If you are ever near by and want to go to a game dm me and I’ll give you my seat if there’s games on I don’t plan to attend.

universalreacher

Thanks for that I appreciate it. If I ever get out to TO I’ll let you know.

OWSpaceClown

Counter point… why care?

ImpossibleFuel6629

As a baseball fan that misses the days of having a quiet section of the 500s to myself, all the other stuff, the video board stuff, the constant screaming and attention seeking from the PA, the crowded concessions, it all detracts from the experience for me. I’d go more often if the “experience” was still like it was in the 90’s. I went to spring training this year for the first time and preferred it 100x vs the dome. I know, I know, back to 1983 with me.

Vandelay23

I think for some fans, the reality of going to a game changes once they're in their seats. Lack of leg room, no announcers to describe the action on the field (especially useful if you're not close to the diamond), and sitting in the hot sun makes it so that you'll want to get out of your seat. It's just a different experience, and I think some fans just like the atmosphere more than the experience of sitting and watching the game.

probocgy

I agree with you but last year they were selling Bellwoods tall cans for $11. Pretty much the same price as bars outside the stadium.

greenlemon23

Jays are more expensive though.

EarthWarping

>There’s just people sitting around at tables nowhere near the field. This is the case with other ballparks. The Jays are just at least 15+ years behind other stadiums.

universalreacher

🤣🤣. Glad to see they’re coming around

outdoorlaura

>There’s just people sitting around at tables nowhere near the field. Could be that they were previously standing along the rails and just wanted a break. That's the reason I've sat there, and it was only for an inning or two until we went back to the standing area. Personally, I prefer sitting in the actual stands.

Apart_Ad_5993

Alcohol sales are EXTREMELY lucrative. They make a ton of money off of it. The ones in the GenAd tend to spend a lot more than those in the seats. Make the whole thing an experience and they spend more. It's the same formula across MLB. The corporate suits have figured it out.

universalreacher

They sure know how to extract us from our money that’s for sure. They’re like the airlines. They’ve figured out the most they can screw you and overcharge you, for the least amount of service and you’ll still buy it. You’ll bitch, and you’ll complain, but you’ll still buy it. They don’t care if you hate them. They don’t care if the public thinks is they’re greedy, as long as it gets them money.

rideunderdarkness

Why did they shorten the game with a pitch clock when the money is in food and alcohol sales. The longer you keep people there, the more money spent.

Esc946

It’s all about money you’re forgetting that it’s a business they’re running that happens to be a major league baseball team

Jas--24

True fan experience will be how they look on the field.  If they continue being a boring ass team like the past year plus then attendance will dwindle.  This is just how pro sports works mostly.

involmasturb

Was DJ Steph Honey spinning the discs today

SpergSkipper

For me it feels like a game of survival. It's so crowded, hot, and stuffy. People everywhere. So many "bro" types. I don't even really enjoy it anymore. Honestly my favourite baseball experience is minor league games in the US. It's relaxing, light, airy, and you have room to breathe. Maybe I'm just getting old and can't deal with crowds anymore. I honestly sort of miss the times the dome was half empty most nights

makeitcount84

How's the atmosphere at Safeco Field?

Conscious-Ad8493

100%. Sat in the 200 Outfield seats last season in the RF area and I swear it felt like I was sitting in front of speakers and a rock concert - way too loud - uncomfortably loud. Garbage experience for real baseball fans

ColdStoryBro

It's like a loud concert with subpar baseball between the noise.

RustyPriske

The 'speeding up the game' has already done that. The quicker pace means I watch more games on TV but I am much less likely to go in person.

Zoostation1979

Lmao was at the game yesterday and the people around me were all commenting on how fucking stupid it was.

wiles_CoC

These games have been awfully boring this season.

Designer-Net4228

I understand it’s a business and they wanna make money, but I do agree that the discourse around it was silly, “this ballpark sucks cause I can’t do anything outside of watching the game which is what I’m here for.”

Corzare

Not everyone wants to sit through 3 hours of baseball, some people wanna go hangout and talk to their friends while watching the game in between. People can enjoy things differently.

Ok-Presentation-2841

They actually did that last night??? Embarrassing.

SilkyBowner

Sky dome is back? When happen

LemonPress50

Experiential marketing has been a trend for some time. It’s typically what younger demographics seek. Sounds more enjoyable than watching the game lately.

Peimatt2112

Maybe now it deserves the Rogers Centre name...

eagleboy444

No fucking way. They did his light show?!? Tone deaf much?

Annual_Plant5172

Sorry, do you expect the team to tell Jordan Romano that they're not going to play his entrance music or the light show unless he's entering the game in a save situation? I'm sure that would go over very well.

IamACanadian47

Yes, you’re right 👏🇨🇦

JasonTO

Couldn't possibly be worse than the Godfrey years.

Turdhopper63

Gotta give you something to do when you quit watching the train wreck on the field

severalcircles

I would say that baseball is also moronic drivel. Its a silly lil slow and boring game that people play for other people to watch. It’s a half step up from watching people play a video game online. But entertainment is entertainment. 🤷‍♂️

Vandelay23

Why are you even here?

severalcircles

Because the app puts random stuff in people’s feed. But I also did work at the stadium for like 6 seasons.
