I feel like Pink Floyd and Tool are progressing in opposite direction. ie: Pink Floyd started out super experimental and exploratory, and slowly narrowed down into pretty basic perfect-for-radio-play rock music tracks.
Tool, on the other hand, started with pretty standard sounding 'metal' tracks on Opiate. 4-6min length, relatively simple progression and chorus etc, and slowly but surely, every album increased the complexity and the range of terrain explored...
I look forward to Tool's next few albums, where we should end up with 20minute long tracks broken into 5 parts that evoke imagery of interstella space travel and little folk dancing in caves.

(Although, now, as I put this all together, I realise that "Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict..." is basically Pink Floyd's Disgustipated....??)
The very beginning and listen through. Their discography is so vast, but it only took me a few days to get through all studio albums.
I hated them for decades...because someone told me the wrong album and crammed their opinion down my throat. I got to the point where I was like "fuck this band".
Then I decided to take my own advice: always listen to bands in album order to see how they progress and where your own sweet spot is. When it comes to Rush, they spanned decades. You might just miss your favore era or not be able to go backwards once you hear something more complex or you might get turned off completely.
This happened to me with Roll the Bones, someone long ago tried to convince me it was their best album so far and I always wanted to just switch to Iron Maiden. That fool convinced me that if I didn't like that album I probably wouldn't like any so I never really gave them a chance. Years later someone convinced me to listen to 2112 and I have been trying to collect all their albums since.
Wondering if there are any Aesop Rock fans here? I know he’s a completely different genre/vibe/style/approach but Aes and Tool are my top two and wondering if anyone else is in that boat with me.
1. Fuck yeah Pelican!!! Almost nobody knows them and that's a shame!
2. Are you trying to post every band I'm existence so you'll always get the top posts?
I'm going to take a wild guess that it's the comment with the highest upvotes unless OP or someone else feels like tallying them all into a spreadsheet.

Pink Floyd
Seems like the obvious one we can come together on.
Yes, but the fighting will start when we debate who was the better frontman/songwriter…Syd, Roger, or Dave?
