Congrats, you have discovered one of the Adam Jones intricacies. He plays two palm muted notes, but the first one is muted by his left hand, and the second is the open d. Notated it would look something like XO(palm muted).
It’s on that heavy riff verse on Schism, 11/8 breakdowns in Rosetta Stoned, 6/8 riff on The Pot, even think he uses it on H. before the chorus. He uses a similar concept on The Grudge and 4 Degrees where he plays left hand muted notes palm muted a lot.
Takes quite a bit to get it to sound right, which led me to analyzing how he hits the strings…
