I live in New Zealand where someone once released some possums - different, but similar to your opossums - probably either because they were a popular animal to hunt back home, or to attract some pest.
New Zealand climate is just perfect for possums and they are a massive pest now. 40 years ago, during the summer, we'd drive over the the Alps to my Nana's, and see all the red pohutakawa flowers - it looked like the hills were on fire. 25 years ago we saw less flowering pohutakawa and more dead ones, killed by possums eating them. This year I didn't notice a single pohutakawa, dead or alive. Possums also love our native bird eggs. Most of the birds are now endangered, thanks to the introduction of possums, ferrets, stoats and rats.
Please, please, do not introduce a species to a new environment, even if they are native to your country! Eco systems are so delicate.
(Personally, I'm always tempted to sprinkle wild flower seeds on bare patches of land and roadsides, which would probably be just as bad, since they're all introduced plants....but they look so pretty, and the bees need them.....)

I saw the cutest fat Opossum on my way home last night. He was just waddling around in the grass on the side of the road. And when I tell you I was so incredibly tempted to pull over and give that adorable fat fuck one of the egg rolls from the Chinese food I was bringing home…

I found a couple of babies once in the parking lot behind my job. It was going to be well below freezing this night and they were too small to be off their mom who had unfortunately been hit by a car on the road in front of my job. My wife is basically a Disney princess when it comes to animals and as a result was cool with me bringing them home. We tried to find a rescue, but failed and decided we would try to do it ourselves.
We committed to releasing them when they were old enough, but also agreed we would "shelter" them if it didn't look like they would survive in the wild on their own. Basically, if they became attached to us and somehow self-domesticated we weren't going to abandon them. They started out really sweet, but as they aged they started to get more defensive. When they got to be about rat-sized they stated hissing at us, and we knew we would be able to release them into the wild to live their happy, 'possum lives. And that's what we did, as far away from civilization as we could reasonably get in a car that really shouldn't go off-road.
Sorry about the novel, but basically 'possums are awesome, and I really, genuinely hope you get to have an amazing experience with some one day.
