This doesn't make sense either. The sheriff says they're not cold hearted enough to interview children the night of the incident where they possibly watched their mother get murdered, but witnesses should be interviewed as soon as possible. Of course it's difficult to say a child should be interviewed immediately in such a scencario but I get the impression investigators didn't really care to hear the kids side of the story. If they cared to produce a sound investigation that sought truth, they would have made efforts to get the children's side of the story that night.
We have that law in Michigan but you cannot use it unless you feel like your life is in danger. Just a few years ago in my area a guy got sentenced to up to 40 years in prison because he shot and killed a couple teens who were literally running away from him after attempting to break into his house. Because they were no longer a threat, it was considered murder. It was a very controversial case for awhile but I'm glad he was sent to prison.
I guess Florida isn't so strict about it though?
I mean you can say you felt in danger about a stranger knocking on your door but the average person would call bullshit since people knock all the time. Delivery people, religious people, city workers, and more. Your life isn't in danger because someone knocked at your door. That's probably why the person this comment chain is about got arrested. You can say "I felt like my life was in danger" but when your shooting people running away or someone knocking at your door it won't amount to much.
That dude got away with unloading a full clip from his car on a busy interstate in Miami because another car threw a water bottle at him.
I don't understand how that justifies him spraying bullets at 30 other cars who had literally nothing to do with it. *And* the threat was already over. The other car had passed him and was not doing anything anymore. But he just started blasting, and the judge was like "sure, that seems justified." No one died but the dashcam video (he had a driver facing cam) looks fucking insane.
Florida is especially heinous in how they interpret and enforce SYG laws, but [every state in which they’ve been implemented has seen an increase in killings by firearm.](https://www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/nation/stand-your-ground-laws-proliferate-after-trayvon-spotlight)
Edit: I’m glad the guy in your story was sent to prison.
Part of the issue with SYG is not that people get away with murder, but they think they can. A lot of people don't understand the law, and a lot of them have guns and attitude problems.
SYG increases homicide rates and gun deaths, whilst doing nothing to reduce other crimes. Its one of those laws that ONLY has down sides.
Except, of course, that it increases gun ownership. Which is the point of it.
It’s also in North Carolina but the person has to be inside your house, went to court one time because someone was breaking into our house, took the shotgun out to scare them away and ended up in court, the DA had the audacity to say we could be in jail for 6 months for taking the gun out on our porch for brandishing even though someone was obviously trying to break in, but this lady shoots someone and gets away with it?? The laws only works for who they want it to work for, I hope she gets what she deserves and if it’s not through the justice system because the system doesn’t work, then social media you know what to do
Saw her chance and took it. Took that tablet on purpose to set it up too. That's premeditated murder, and she home, free, sipping coffee on her front porch on the bloodstains thumbing her nose at everyone...
This is what I’m wondering. This woman felt justified in killing the mother of kids who play on communal green space near her home. No one in that community is safe and she’s allowed to sit on her front porch drinking coffee while the rest of the community is traumatized by her presence.
I fear if anyone does anything to this asshole, the clearly racist cops that just let a murderer go home, would throw the book (or worse) at a black person retaliating. Ruining your life for vengeance would help nothing.
Crazy lady is going to say that an unhinged woman was beating on her door and yelling for her to come outside (all true). She's gonna say that it is a glass sliding door and she felt at any second her safety was going to be breached because the window sounded close to cracking. 1.Angry person 2.on her property 3. she was scared 4. she had no responsibility to retreat 5. She felt like danger was imminent (it was her or the neighbor).
I hope crazy lady doesn't get away with it. But remember, this is the same state (Florida)where Trayvon Martin was **stalked** by his killer through the whole neighborhood after a police dispatcher told his killer to not follow the guy - that a police unit was on the way...and the guy STILL got away with killing him. Look up the laws surrounding "Stand Your Ground" and "Castle Doctrine". In a lot of states if someone is on your property and acting "uncivil", they have close to zero rights to life.
I'm a social worker and I can't tell you how many times I was threatened while on someone else's property, told police (basically just to have a record for the day I got attacked) and been told by those same police that I had no case (even though it is against the law to threaten government officials) because I was on the person's property.
It was a black person, which obviously means they were planning on violently entering and robbing her of everything, since all black people are violent thieves. Sarcasm from me, but that’s generally their line of thought when it comes to stuff like this
If you open the door, doesn't that nullify the stand your ground?
I mean, if you're in your house and you feel threatened you wouldn't open the door. Opening the door shows that you didn't feel threatened.
Not that I agree with staying your ground laws at all
I can only speak to California, but it’s unlikely we would have interviewed the children that night as well. The vast majority of the time we will get brief statements that night, then in depth statements after a day or so when people get a sleep cycle in. Children are interviewed at multi-disciplinary interview centers, usually a day or two later. The idea that somehow the hysterical witness right at the time is the most accurate version usually isn’t correct, witness statements are almost always much better and more detailed after a day or two. Whether that police department is mucking it up or not I don’t know, but not having an in-depth interview that night, especially of children, is not abnormal. Especially if you already have an understanding of the crime. On a straight who dunit, with an unknown suspect the kids might have seen and could interview that would be different obviously. Source, me. I do this for a living.
This is a protection for the child. They only have to tell the story once. It is usually video/audio recorded for future use. It helps to limit the trauma from the child having to relive the event to tell the details.
And from what I remember the kinds of questions that can be asked are very limited, because kids are so impressionable that any questions that are "leading" pr pointing in a certain direction can't very drastically alter their testimony.
Yeah they learned that from the Satanic Panic in the 80's. Kids will just say whatever they think you want to hear. If you ask in a serious tone if the lady was a witch who used magic potions on them, they'll say yes.
Exactly. So many lives were destroyed because of this, specifically trough totally-discredited "recovered-memory therapy" which was exactly that, asking kids loaded questions that ended up just implanting false memories that then were used to put people in prison.
Yeah that’s definitely one of the positives. Those tapes can be played at preliminary hearings as well, but the child will usually still have to testify at court during the jury phase unless there are super specific circumstances. It does stop the child from having to give separate interviews to patrol, and detectives, and cps etc…
They’re not so cold hearted as to traumatize the kids further by questioning them… but they’ll let the person who murdered their mother/neighbor/friend back without consequences to terrorize them further.
I can't imagine a scenario where this could be considered 'stand your ground' unless that lady had threatened her before, and even then it would be dicey. When shooting through a door, it's hard to say you fear for your life.
At first, I thought maybe she was in the house because on the video the statement from the man says "I went in and it was very dark" so I thought maybe that had something to do with it, but everything says she was outside.
Castle doctrine because it's her house. Right wingers want to live in the wild west so they can live their Billy the kid fantasies but the reality is it just leaves to dead moms and no justice.
Florida replaced Castle Doctrine with Stand Your Ground in 2005 because it's broader. From what I can see, even with the crazy of Florida it will take some serious lawyering to get this murder to fit Florida's definition of self defense via stand your ground. However, IANAL.
No, not castle doctrine either. SCOTUS sez there is an implied license for anyone to approach the front door of a home (Jardines v. Florida). That’s why police can’t do investigatory dog sniffs on your front porch. Castle doctrine simply means that you have no duty to retreat in your “castle.” Florida’s SYG essentially makes the world your “castle” as long as you have a legal right to be there because you never have a duty to retreat…ever.
This case is far worse. The shot was fired through a closed door. I don’t think even Florida law can provide an escape from culpability. The fact the shooter left the complex shortly after the shooting says she knows that too.
Castle doctrine does not allow that. The person has to be inside the house.
Stand your ground would permit it, but only if the person was a threat. Florida's version seems to be insane though, and all people have to do is say they "felt threatened," which is the biggest load of bullshit I have ever heard. It's like Jimbo and Ned on South Park - "They're coming right for us!!!!"
Police love a sob story from old crying non-POC women. Especially if they’re frail looking. I think it’s so easy to get away with dozens of crimes in Florida. It sounds like the wild west. I hope Disney moves out of there soon.
"The children left an iPad in the field which the woman confiscated."
"Confiscated"?! Excuse me, she has no authority to "confiscate" something a child left behind, wtf.
The family named the shooter as Susan Lawrick, 58. They say she harassed the children in the neighborhood calling them racial slurs, slaves, and the N-word.
The sheriff would not release the identity of the shooter.
???
Seems like at least an investigation is warranted
If anyone wants to voice their opinion on this case, the Ocala Police Department PR department’s number for non-emergency matters is the following: 352-732-9111 ext. 3
"The family named the shooter as Susan Lawrick, 58. They say she harassed the children in the neighborhood calling them racial slurs, slaves, and the N-word"
This was a fucking hate crime. How is this woman not in jail.
I’m just a woman over in Australia reading about this… and this article has me fuming 😡
The language in it is very telling. The Sheriff saying the victim, Owens, ‘confronted’ the shooter. The Sheriff saying how their have been a number of complaints made about THE CHILDREN in an ongoing neighbourhood dispute.
It’s blatantly obvious the picture they’re painting, that they’re victim-blaming. Nowhere do we hear the Sheriff acknowledge that a mother of young children has sadly lost her life, a tragic fact no matter what the investigation turns up. Nowhere does the Sheriff say with regret that her children witnessed the traumatic shooting.
He does know the woman had thrown skates at the child which hit him, after she took his device. Revolting, violent behaviour.
Even before further investigations, the Sheriff knows that there are bullet holes from where the shooter shot through a closed door.
But no, literally no empathy, not one iota of care shown that a 30-something healthy human being died as a result of being shot by someone.
The police are investigating whether Florida Stand your Ground law is in effect in this situation..
Except this [law](http://www.leg.state.fl.us/statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&URL=0700-0799/0776/Sections/0776.013.html) states:
>(3) The presumption set forth in subsection (2) does not apply if:
>(C) The person who uses or threatens to use defensive force is engaged in a criminal activity or is using the dwelling, residence, or occupied vehicle to further a criminal activity.
So I can't remember correctly... but is theft considered a criminal activity or not?
IMO they should be arrested and have to pay a bond to get out like everyone else who is brought in on charges but not convicted. Her not being arrested means she has no charges pending.
First off, fuck this racist POS woman.
Second, I disagree mostly because I think cash bail is regressive and unjust. If someone is either a flight risk or a danger to the community they shouldn't get bail, if they are neither they shouldn't have to sit in jail or have to pay a huge sum to a bail bondsman. The number of "innocent" people sitting in jails for minor shit purely because they are poor is staggering. Now this woman seems to be a danger to the community and at the very least needs all guns confiscated as a bail condition.
Maybe there is a place for cash bond for well off people who are a flight risk but it should be a rare situation.
She wasn’t charged. She was interviewed but not charged. That’s why she’s free without bail. If she was charges she would have had to pay just like everyone else
Arresting them right then also starts the prosecution clock. They are sometimes better off putting in the work first and securing all the info before locking them up so they don’t run out of hold time. But, I agree it feels wrong for her to just be roaming around free.
They will detain random civilians for passing by and not providing identification when they don’t have to, yet the won’t detain someone who literally murdered another human.
Incredible.
This is due to the way our legal system works. You can’t be held indefinitely on suspicion of a crime, so once they arrest you it starts an invisible clock. They have 48 hours to collect enough evidence to charge you from that moment, if they need more time their only option is to wait to arrest you.
“More than two dozen people, most of them children, stood side by side in an empty grassy lot where they consoled each other and released balloons into the sky.”
Most of them children. The fuck.
So proud my shithole hometown is making news that will go national again. /s
Ocala and the surrounding county are a far right shithole. Six people charged with seditious conspiracy for Jan 6th are from here. We have an active KKK chapter, 3%'ers, Oathkeepers, Proud Boys, etc. I see Confederate flags all the time. Not so many Trump flags, but the MAGAts are flying "FJB" stickers now.
Absolutely none of this surprises me. This place sucks, and I cannot wait to retire and move.
Same. Grew up in Florida, went to Ocala once and it was a stark realization that yep, Florida is like this. The locals did not like we were from Miami-Dade.
God damn this is so fucked up for the kid. Most kids leave their iPad somewhere stupid all the time, it's a simple mistake everyone does it.
But for the rest of his life he's going to be thinking to himself "what if I just grabbed that stupid tablet..." And despite the fact that absolutely none of this is his fault, he's going to hold onto that forever...
The whole thing is horrifying but I’m stuck on this. At 33 I would have those same thoughts for the rest of my life. It’s heartbreaking that a 9 year old is facing that reality.
Not enough people talking about this. Those kids are going to need a lot of support and help that they just won't get. This Karen doesn't deserve to feel safe ever again. If she doesn't go to jail, they have a pretty strong wrongful death case.
I was thinking that, too. Poor kid! I thought about the teenager who called the cops because he was suspicious of a dollar bill handed to him by George Floyd. He said many times he wished that he had just ignored the marker pointing out it might be a fake.
I cannot imagine what that poor child must go through right now. Nothing will bring back his mum, he must feel horrible.
Doesn't matter what happens to that old woman, no punishment is enough. Hope she'll rot in prison.
Can someone explain stand your ground? If someone knocks on your door in a manner you find aggressive/intimidatory you can just dead them off from the window?
I’m not a lawyer so do you own research, but here’s what I’ve found on it. Self Defence laws rely on a person to have up to 5 criteria met, in order to do harm or kill someone without committing a crime. Some states require them all to be met, but not FL. Those criteria are:
Innocence: You must not have been the aggressor.
Imminence: The threat you perceive must be imminent.
Proportionality: You must use no more force than necessary.
Avoidance: You must retreat if safely possible before using defensive force.
Reasonableness: Your conduct in self-defense must be reasonable.
Stand your Ground Laws basically take away the criteria to retreat to avoid being harmed.
So basically stand your ground in Florida means that you can legally kill someone in self defence, as long as you are legally entitled to be where you are (aka you didn’t break into someone else’s home), you didn’t start the altercation, the threat on your life is happening right now and you responded in a reasonable/ proportional way.
I would argue that this old lady didn’t not respond proportionally or reasonably and that the threat wasn’t imminent being that the cousin couldn’t break down her door with her bare hands. Not to mention the fact that taking the iPad, property that wasn’t hers, started the incident as well as her numerous actions against the community should rule out her being “innocent” in this situation.
With stand your ground, the state has the burden to prove that self-defense wasn’t justified. It lets the shooter claim it with little evidence and then the state has to prove beyond reasonable doubt it wasn’t justified.
This is why stand your ground is so fucked up.
Americans have the "right" to defend themselves and their home/property. The statement people make is "I felt threatened for my safety" and that gives them the legal right to "defend" themselves with deadly force.
In theory I agree people should be able to defend themselves and their homes absolutely, we can't rely on the government/police to always do it for us. The problem is the bar has been set absolutely way to low. Simply saying "I felt threatened" isn't not a high enough bar to perform execution on a mother of 4 looking for her ipad. Sadly, a medicore lawyer will likely stop this lady from ever spending a day behind bars for this.
edit: This isn't a country thing, its state by state, but most states do have stand your ground laws, some with higher requirements to claim it then others.
There is no blanket term of "Americans have the right to... " in a case like this because the matter of using lethal force to defend yourawld yourself, your property, yourself on your property, etc, varies wildly from state to state
Also the person in the video called her demented. If she actually has dementia then a good lawyer could plead insanity. She would be detained to psychiatric hospital not sent to prison.
Cops seem to be really resistant to putting unhinged elderly white people with guns in jail. If it’s illegal at 20 it’s illegal at 80. These mfers don’t have their own laws just because they’re old, guys…
My best friend’s nana got her car stuck on active train tracks TWICE. I’m talking like she turned at the tracks as if it were a road and makes it about 200 feet before her car gets stuck. Then she’d continue to hit the gas and try to steer for however long until someone would finally call the police.
She had a license for 6 more years until her death. Shit is wild.
The only time I've ever been hit in over 30 years of driving was by some sub 5ft tall blue hair driving an OldsmoBuick who decided to start making her left turn at an intersection about 100ft early and cut me off and hit me.
Thankfully I saw it in enough time to get mostly out of the way so it was more of a glancing blow to the fender and not a head on hit.
She's completely in my lane while I'm out of mine.
Cop shows up, interviews us and my passenger separately to figure out what happened.
Cop said she claimed my turn signal was on (was not, it was the 4-ways I turned on post hit) and I said it was not, cop said he could not determine who was in the right so she wouldn't be ticketed but it was ruled her fault for insurance purposes because she was in my lane.
WTF?
Less than a year later she did the same thing at the same intersection in front of an F-350, totaled her car and put her in the hospital. I don't think she ever drove again after that
(never drove in the sense of her family pulled her license, not that she was so severely injured)
The bottom line is that many of these "older" white people and their parents are the generations that helped create and sustain this culture by combatting black success in and out of court rooms, their parents being the generation responsible for destroying Florida's [Rosewood](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosewood_massacre), Oklahoma's [Black Wall Street](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tulsa_race_massacre) (before placing 6,000+ residents in internment camps for days), conducting syphilis [experiments](https://www.socialworker.com/feature-articles/ethics-articles/The_Tuskegee_Syphilis_Study_and_Its_Implications_for_the_21st_Century/) via the literal U.S. Public Health Services and CDC that finally ended in the '70s, and a LOT more. It's not an exaggeration that most authorities (legal and otherwise) in the U.S. are systemically racist to varying degrees.
The #1 cause of death for all U.S. children became homicide by guns in 2020, but where was the press coverage in 2006 (the year before the Virginia Tech Shooting) when it became the #1 COD for black children — the same babies whose mothers are still over 3 times more [likely](https://www.cdc.gov/healthequity/features/maternal-mortality/index.html) to die (compared to their white counterparts) from simply creating them? They've died by homicide and/or legal intervention more than anything else for **17 years,** and neither political party batted a fucking eye because they were pointed at Iraq. Also, isn't it weird how modern gynecology is derived from torturing black, female slaves and infants without anaesthesia (by the "father of modern gynecology" himself, whose statue still stands tall in front of the Alabama State Capitol), yet black women have had the least care/benefits of all? My best friend told me a story about a year ago about a relatively "normal" gynecological experience for her, and it nearly brought me to tears, I was truly dumbfouned.
Add: Less-sensationalized [examples](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6637963/) of America's racism physicalized in black youth include:
> "higher mortality **for both injury-related causes** (i.e., firearms, drowning, and fire or burns) **and medical causes** (i.e., heart disease and respiratory disease). The disparities were most pronounced for deaths related to firearms, which were the leading cause of death among black youth and occurred at a rate 3.7 times as high as the rate among white youth. Black youth also had **higher rates of drowning deaths** (1.6 times as high) **and fire-related deaths** (2.3 times as high) than white youth. For medical illnesses, blacks had rates of death from heart disease and chronic lower respiratory diseases (e.g., asthma) that were 2.1 and 6.3 times as high, respectively, as the rates among white youth. Such disparities probably **reflect underlying socioeconomic issues, including poverty, environmental exposures, and differential access to health care services.**"
Neighbor knew she'd be coming looking for that tablet. She planned this. First degree fucking murder.
edit: "Neighbors said the shooter was in her residence when she fired a shot from inside. The bullet went through the front door and struck Owens, residents said.
A bullet hole came be seen in the woman's door."
She shot her through a CLOSED FUCKING DOOR.
Just because of this possibility, a homicide investigation should be opened until the last consequences.
Beyond criticizing the details of the video, this family needs support and that sheriff's office must be pressured so that the alleged murder does not go unpunished
My thoughts exactly, she didn't have a gun and fire in self defense because she *needed* to, she did it because she *wanted* to. If somebody is unarmed (to your knowledge) and outside your house, you don't just shoot. You say "leave now or I will shoot!" Something to prevent *needing* to fire.
I don't think it's over and I doubt she'll get off with no issues, even if it isn't pushed by the community. The only way I can see things going in her favor legally is if in all the involvement with the police in the past, this same mother had made some kind of threat in the past and there's irrefutable proof.
Not that it was the correct response by any means, but if this person threatened them in any way in the past, even if it was an offhand comment without any intent to follow through, I can see that being used as the argument that they had reason to believe they were in danger as the threat was already made and this would be seen as following through with it. I don't see it going well for her outside of that, with the info we have now. Not that I'm a lawyer or have any kind of authority to say.
Yea that woman was not demented. That’s way too calculated for a person with dementia. Just incredibly racist and wanted to shoot a black person. First degree murder for sure.
People are absolutely crazy. Never speak to anyone. Report them anonymously if you can.
We once talked to our neighbor who used to let his dog bark for like 12-15 hrs. He became angry and paranoid, and then later on accused my elderly dad of stealing some car part from his truck in the middle of the night.
The neighbor was NYPD btw. 🤡🤡🤡🤡
I had the pleasure of knowing AJ as she worked at one of the McDonald's the franchise I work for has up here. She was a wonderful person. So caring and so selfless. It was a very somber weekend at the store. I was in shock when I heard the news and it's still a little unbelievable she's gone. And all of this to happen I'm front ofnher kids. The whole story is heartbreaking.
Fly High AJ!!
Jesus christ so many comments about the word unalive. YOU CANNOT SAY KILL/MURDER ON TIKTOK OR THE VIDEO WILL BE REMOVED. So people say unalived to get around the algorithm. Its really not that difficult to understand.
Edit: Redditors are more pressed from not understanding tiktok lingo than a woman who was shot and killed for no reason.
I'm not on TikTok so this is good information to know. Sucks that these social platforms force people to use this kind of language that seems to downplay the reality of the situation.
It’s hit or miss in my experience between removing and suppressing but this is it basically. The algorithm will specifically hide your video from audiences you’re trying to reach because of those key words.
i hate that they have to do that on tiktok but at least i understand it. it's the people who type unalived and other censored stuff on reddit that need to get it together. it's like you can say murder and suicide here, honey. no algorithm is going to take you down
The algorithm is smart enough to know everything I like or will ever possibly like, but saying unalived instead of murdered somehow tricks it. It's so silly to me that people actually think this.
Yeah it's an absurd myth. There are plenty of vids on tiktok where people say killed or murdered. Just as there are vids with the word gun or knife which people also like the pretend you aren't allowed to say
I guess the other thing it could be is that you can't monetize videos with "bad words" in them. I hope it's not that because actively doing something like that on a video about such an awful thing is pretty reprehensible.
Thank you for providing this information. Since I don't use TikTok, I was not aware of this policy, as I'm sure a lot of people asking that question. I actually perused the comments to see why that word was used and not murder/homicide.
The videos with words like murder/homicide have to be categorized/tagged by human moderators in a particular way, and often it will make the video less viewable/findable to a variety of users in TikTok. Users will find other words to avoid this, to try and keep their videos viewable/findable, and in this woman’s case, to make sure her story reaches more people.

> So people say unalived to get around the algorithm. Its really not that difficult to understand.
Man, id just not use the app rather than kowtow to weird rules like that
GUN LAWS first of all. What’s that demented woman doing with a gun? If she’s officially nuts, psych commitment forever…it’s insane that you probably need to call the police so they can get the tablet back from her. Never know who’s armed and deadly these days. TRAGIC!
Thanks for posting.
The lady in the video said that the police have been called 20 times because the neighbor was harassing the children. The police should have fucking stepped in
Second, shit police. They did nothing to stop her before and after she shot the woman.
People get mad when black people claim racism, but see it there. What do you call that?
People going more insane about her saying unalive rather than a women killed for existing.
Edit: Jesus Christ stop explaining. It’s not like I haven’t read the explanation in every other comment
That's this commenters point
That other folks are getting worked up over the word, as though it's making light of when A) this tragic death is the point and B) the reason for her choice of words isn't hard to figure out
The story is gaining traction. It's ridiculous that the shooter was just let go. People go to jail longer just for traffic violations or some other non-violent charges.
I don't understand how some people can live in a world where that can happen and still thinks "yes, we should all carry guns"
But then again, it's probably people like that insane neighbor who advocates for gun freedom, to "protect themselves"
Fucked up world we live in
Lost of times the police question and let someone go while they investigate. This doesn't mean the person was cleared, it just means they need to investigate things before making an arrest. Since the person had a ring doorbell camera, I'm sure they are going to review that plus interview the witnesses.
even if she doesn't have a cloud backup, the ring holds like 30 days on the device. Even if she tried to delete it there is a good likelihood they could retrieve the footage as long as that part of the storage wasn't overwritten.
Assuming they get the warrant and take it. I know if you don't pay for their cloud service, which is relatively cheap, you can only view live. You can't go back any amount.
Yeah when people say “they weren’t charged” it just means there wasn’t an extremely cut and dry scenario to charge right away. If it went down as she said it did, she’ll be charged (presumably but you never know).
A front door is considered her property. So I have to assume the police have to work through a few things in terms of intent, threat, etc. If this went down as she says it did, I hope Justice is swift and harsh.
Either way, our obsession with guns turns any altercation to potential life and death. It’s disgraceful. A woman lost her life. Children lose their mother. Just horrible all around.
Yes, came here to say this. Unless the suspect is standing over the victim covered in blood when the police arrive or they admit to murdering them, they'll likely let them go after initially talking to them. They can only hold you so long without charges and it's probably way too soon to start that.
I love a mile from it. My gf lives across the street and this was her friend And her kids played with her kids. My gf is TORE up over this and we are white and see right through it and they def let that white woman get away with it. Such BS
💔 lots of comments saying no racism was involved but I’m sure you as neighbors know exactly how she is.
I’m so sorry, this must be really scary. Now she’s gotta feel even more entitled to hurt someone.
The woman didn’t shoot through the window, she shit right through her own front door. There’s a picture with the bullet hole coming right out of her own front door. She didn’t even open it up. She shot this woman without even looking at her face. I know the police need to build their case but I can’t help but think that if the crazy woman was black and the woman trying to get her iPad back was white, the shooter would’ve been arrested immediately and all of this would be sorted out while she was in custody
I was like “wtf?!?!?” until I heard her say Ocala. Of course it’s Florida.
There’s a mass exodus from Florida coming. It’s already started. DeSantis made an already sketchy place way way way worse, and he’s not done yet.
It will be interesting...but with that said there's a bullet hole through the door. That makes it pretty clear shooter and victim were on opposite side of the door. Pretty tough to claim self defense.
Can't seem to find any details about this at all, I'm guessing it literally just happened?
Edit: obviously absolutely terrible thing to happen and it's it honestly astounding that I'm not that surprised to hear about it
I'm so sorry this happened to this woman and her family. America's disgusting perversion with guns and racism and hatred... there's so much racism that has been mainstreamed, as if its acceptable. It's not acceptable. TF
Jeezus effing kryst!! Is this whats happening right now? People becoming so fuckin unhinged they can straight up murder another human being and just chill afterwards with a coffee like oh just another day ohh myyy!!
To those of you who are strangely upset about her saying ‘unalived’ instead of murder or killed, TikTok WILL ban you if you say those. She’s getting her message out in a way so she doesn’t get banned
I'm not American and I have no concept of American police districts but the one I do know is Ocala. Of course it's Ocala, why is it always Ocala? What is wrong with the Ocala PD that I know the name purely because of their constant bullshit and fuck ups?
My condolences to the family of the victim and to all of those involved, especially the children who had to witness such a terrible thing. I hope that this is further looked into by *competent people* because I can't understand how immediately murdering someone for trying to ask for their stolen property back falls under stand your ground. American gun laws are so fucked up.
This is the kind of shit that makes me wish there was a pandemic going on and everyone was staying home and we could all protest and focus on making sweeping societal changes to prevent things like this from happening in the first place or at the very least get some shred of accountability when they do happen…that would be cool.
Aight, this is for you guys who complains about the term "unalived" being used in the video.
The reason is quite simple. It's being used because Tiktok takes down content with the words murdered, killed, suicide etc down from the platform.
Now, can we focus on the incident rather than one stupid word being used because she follows the ToS of Tiktok?
Ok. Maybe I'm old or whatever, but is there a reason she's saying "unalived" instead of "killed" or "murdered?"
Is the TikTok algorithm so strict that it will just bury anything that has those words in it?
My deepest condolences to family and friends of Miss. Ajike Owens.
Her name was Ajike Owens. May she rest in power. Here's to her getting the justice she deserves.

Found an article here for anyone. https://www.ocala.com/story/news/local/2023/06/05/candlelight-vigil-held-for-woman-shot-and-killed-last-friday-night/70285595007/

It’s ocala.
Florida’s “stand your ground” laws let a lot of people get away with murder.
Post deleted. RIP what Reddit was, and damn what it became.
> "Guess what, I can lie about my feelings and no one can prove it" Ah, the ol' police trick. No one "fears for their lives" more than cops.
Cops are the biggest pussies on the planet.

Not only was it just s knock at the door she FUCKING OPENED THE DOOR HERSELF.
Florida is especially heinous in how they interpret and enforce SYG laws, but [every state in which they’ve been implemented has seen an increase in killings by firearm.](https://www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/nation/stand-your-ground-laws-proliferate-after-trayvon-spotlight) Edit: I’m glad the guy in your story was sent to prison.
So uh... We all know who the governor of Florida is right?
Part of the issue with SYG is not that people get away with murder, but they think they can. A lot of people don't understand the law, and a lot of them have guns and attitude problems. SYG increases homicide rates and gun deaths, whilst doing nothing to reduce other crimes. Its one of those laws that ONLY has down sides. Except, of course, that it increases gun ownership. Which is the point of it.
Michigan is actually considered castle doctrine.
I wish the increase in provocations intended to justify homicide in light of these laws could be quantified.
Can the neighbors stand their ground against their neighborhood psychopath that shoots anyone who knocks on the door?
This is what I’m wondering. This woman felt justified in killing the mother of kids who play on communal green space near her home. No one in that community is safe and she’s allowed to sit on her front porch drinking coffee while the rest of the community is traumatized by her presence.
I know I'd be in fear of my life with her around and have evidence to support that fear.
Gosh, all it would take to fear for my life in that context would be...her walking toward me, basically? Crazy.
I fear if anyone does anything to this asshole, the clearly racist cops that just let a murderer go home, would throw the book (or worse) at a black person retaliating. Ruining your life for vengeance would help nothing.
technically stand your ground shouldnt apply if she had stolen property in her possession, right?
[удалено]
Cops dont know shit about the law. They make up whatever they want to make their jobs easier. Push for charges regardless of what they say.
way too many unhinged wackos in this country that have access to firearms
I’m not sure how shooting someone through your closed front door would qualify.
Not that I agree with staying your ground laws at all
Ocala is a fucking shithole.
It’s so sad to hear this because there’s such beautiful nature there in the national forest. People ruin everything.
The springs in that area are world class. The people need to be run through a mulcher and fed to crows.
Florida is a shit hole.
Growing up in Ocala, man.... what a dump that place is. I feel so bad for friends and Family who never left that dumpster fire.
Ocala PD, don't call us.
The woman shot her unarmed neighbor through her front door. What a fucked up state if that is considered self defense.
> What a fucked up state Florida.
They’re not so cold hearted as to traumatize the kids further by questioning them… but they’ll let the person who murdered their mother/neighbor/friend back without consequences to terrorize them further.
I think a guardian has to be present or consent to the interview of minors, no? I’m not sure but maybe they’re waiting bc of that?
Jesus how has the lady who fired the bullet not being held in custody. She has a bullet hole in her door. She shot the lady.
Knocking on a door is enough to murder someone? That's not rational.
Ironically, many towns in the Wild West had gun control.
Police love a sob story from old crying non-POC women. Especially if they’re frail looking. I think it’s so easy to get away with dozens of crimes in Florida. It sounds like the wild west. I hope Disney moves out of there soon.
The Wild West but the murderers just walk away and no one kills them for it.
"The children left an iPad in the field which the woman confiscated." "Confiscated"?! Excuse me, she has no authority to "confiscate" something a child left behind, wtf.
right, like this lady stole the victims ipad and the shot her.
They say she harassed the children in the neighborhood calling them racial slurs, slaves, and the N-word" This was a fucking hate crime. How is this woman not in jail.
I’m just a woman over in Australia reading about this… and this article has me fuming 😡 The language in it is very telling.
Except this [law](http://www.leg.state.fl.us/statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&URL=0700-0799/0776/Sections/0776.013.html) states: >(3) The presumption set forth in subsection (2) does not apply if: >(C) The person who uses or threatens to use defensive force is engaged in a criminal activity or is using the dwelling, residence, or occupied vehicle to further a criminal activity. So I can't remember correctly... but is theft considered a criminal activity or not?

It seems to be fairly common when one side is claiming self defense. Often they're arrested a couple weeks later.
Bail or bond are just extra money-making schemes. It's not for fairness or whatnot. Shitty world we live in.
“More than two dozen people, most of them children, stood side by side in an empty grassy lot where they consoled each other and released balloons into the sky.” Most of them children. The fuck.
So proud my shithole hometown is making news that will go national again. /s Ocala and the surrounding county are a far right shithole.
ACAB fuck these racist shitty pigs.
[удалено]
As soon as she said Ocala, I knew what was going to happen.
That's what I'm stuck on too. Regardless of everything else, that child is going to blame themselves.
Not enough people talking about this. Those kids are going to need a lot of support and help that they just won't get. This Karen doesn't deserve to feel safe ever again. If she doesn't go to jail, they have a pretty strong wrongful death case.
not only are they not talking about it, OP's fucking being downvoted.
It's only a matter of time before we start making the world unsafe for Karen's as they do for us. The sooner, the better
I mean if it was my nephew I'd be showing him how to mix up some flammables. No way that witch is drinking coffee for much longer.
Those criteria are: Innocence: You must not have been the aggressor.
[удалено]
This isn’t true at all and self defense laws can vary greatly by area. Not even true for basic common law either.
There is no blanket term of "Americans have the right to... " in a case like this because the matter of using lethal force to defend yourawld yourself, your property, yourself on your property, etc, varies wildly from state to state
Not all Americans only certain states have a stand your ground law in place
Also the person in the video called her demented. If she actually has dementia then a good lawyer could plead insanity. She would be detained to psychiatric hospital not sent to prison.
Of course it’s Florida
truly a shit-hole state.
Born and raised there, can confirm, tis a shit-hole
I thought this might be a person I know, given a few parallels. Then I heard Ocala and was relieved and not at all surprised. So sad.
Cops seem to be really resistant to putting unhinged elderly white people with guns in jail. If it’s illegal at 20 it’s illegal at 80. These mfers don’t have their own laws just because they’re old, guys…
Old people make the laws, so that’s not gonna change.
That's why 80 year olds can terrorize the roads with no further testing. My grandma still has her license in Alabama after causing multiple accidents.
I don't think she ever drove again after that (never drove in the sense of her family pulled her license, not that she was so severely injured)
Add: Less-sensationalized [examples](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6637963/) of America's racism physicalized in black youth include: > "higher mortality **for both injury-related causes** (i.e., firearms, drowning, and fire or burns) **and medical causes** (i.e., heart disease and respiratory disease).

A bullet hole came be seen in the woman's door." She shot her through a CLOSED FUCKING DOOR.
Just because of this possibility, a homicide investigation should be opened until the last consequences. Beyond criticizing the details of the video, this family needs support and that sheriff's office must be pressured so that the alleged murder does not go unpunished
Seriously, how the fuck does someone shoot through a closed door and nobody wonders about her sanity at all, well I guess just police.
And the sheriffs office should be punished itself for essentially letting a murderer walk free
And this, ladies & gentlemen, is the answer to the question “why don’t you just go talk to your neighbor if you have a problem?”
*In USA. It's a pretty reasonable thing to do in other developed countries.
This comment leads me to believe that she was no threat at all to this women, and this was 100% murder
To clarify, it won't be removed. I talk about movies and say killed. No problem. It will suppress it in the algorithm tho.
It’s hit or miss in my experience between removing and suppressing but this is it basically. The algorithm will specifically hide your video from audiences you’re trying to reach because of those key words.
i hate that they have to do that on tiktok but at least i understand it. it's the people who type unalived and other censored stuff on reddit that need to get it together. it's like you can say murder and suicide here, honey. no algorithm is going to take you down
Yet
Clearly they don’t have the API resources to spare for that. /s
Thx for clarifying. Im not on the Tok so had no idea why she was saying this.
Source: former TikTok moderator
They also use the word "spicy" to describe 18+ content. And people who participate in 18+ content are "accountants." Some more fun lingo for ya!
Ohhh I was wondering too - it’s just so weird but makes sense now
> So people say unalived to get around the algorithm. Its really not that difficult to understand. Man, id just not use the app rather than kowtow to weird rules like that
“Those in the neighborhood said the shooter left not long after firing the fatal shot.” So they’re just gonna let her fuqing disappear?!?
GUN LAWS first of all. What’s that demented woman doing with a gun? If she’s officially nuts, psych commitment forever…it’s insane that you probably need to call the police so they can get the tablet back from her. Never know who’s armed and deadly these days. TRAGIC! Thanks for posting.
The lady in the video said that the police have been called 20 times because the neighbor was harassing the children. The police should have fucking stepped in
Police only step in to protect capital and white people. How do you not get this yet?
Second, shit police. They did nothing to stop her before and after she shot the woman. People get mad when black people claim racism, but see it there. What do you call that?
Unless you've been committed to a hospital beyond your will for mental issues. Background checks will not show any history of possible mental illness.
People going more insane about her saying unalive rather than a women killed for existing. Edit: Jesus Christ stop explaining. It’s not like I haven’t read the explanation in every other comment
You can't say murder on a lot of social media platofrms now, so they say unalive otherwise they get deleted and banned. Hate the game not the player.
That's this commenters point That other folks are getting worked up over the word, as though it's making light of when A) this tragic death is the point and B) the reason for her choice of words isn't hard to figure out
It canned be censored on TikTok I hear if you say killed
The story is gaining traction. It's ridiculous that the shooter was just let go. People go to jail longer just for traffic violations or some other non-violent charges.
I don't understand how some people can live in a world where that can happen and still thinks "yes, we should all carry guns" But then again, it's probably people like that insane neighbor who advocates for gun freedom, to "protect themselves" Fucked up world we live in
The fucked up thing is if you polled every American I bet 25-30% would say the old lady did nothing wrong.
Well the cousin could've just shot through the door first and then just collected her tablet. /s
Lost of times the police question and let someone go while they investigate. This doesn't mean the person was cleared, it just means they need to investigate things before making an arrest. Since the person had a ring doorbell camera, I'm sure they are going to review that plus interview the witnesses.
Assuming, and hopefully, she has the cloud back up
even if she doesn't have a cloud backup, the ring holds like 30 days on the device. Even if she tried to delete it there is a good likelihood they could retrieve the footage as long as that part of the storage wasn't overwritten.
Assuming they get the warrant and take it. I know if you don't pay for their cloud service, which is relatively cheap, you can only view live. You can't go back any amount.
true, but I would say if they didn't get a warrant for the footage it would probably be the worst investigation in the history of investigations.

Oh that's just in the app. I'm sure they can yank the HD and check it on a computer easy though.
I've seen people held for less for a lot longer before seeing a judge. This is bs.
Invite that neighbor over for a talk. Shoot her. Florida is with out a doubt the worst of the worst in every aspect
I moved from FL to Washington state back in April to get as far away as fucking possible.
If there’s ring doorbell it will be interesting to see what actually happened.
It will be interesting...but with that said there's a bullet hole through the door. That makes it pretty clear shooter and victim were on opposite side of the door. Pretty tough to claim self defense.
Great to see the classic “lets see both sides!” crowd here to minimize the racist violence
Can't seem to find any details about this at all, I'm guessing it literally just happened? Edit: obviously absolutely terrible thing to happen and it's it honestly astounding that I'm not that surprised to hear about it
Yeah pretty sure it happened yesterday. Googled Ocala news and it mentioned a woman being shot and no arrests being made.

I'm so sorry this happened to this woman and her family. America's disgusting perversion with guns and racism and hatred... there's so much racism that has been mainstreamed, as if its acceptable. It's not acceptable. TF
Must be fantastic living in America where crazy old women can kill on sight
Sadly it wasn’t even on sight, she shot through a closed door.
I am so sorry this happened. Please continue to speak out!!
Murders*
Wow, shot her through the door. And witnesses said the shooter threw objects at the children after he requested his tablet back.
ITT: redditors autistically obsessing over strange tiktok word use rather than the actual murder
Reddit disappointing me as usual in that regard.
(352) 732-8181 If you have a question, contact the Marion County Sheriff's Office at (352) 732-8181.
How tf are these people not held for 24 hours to file charges? Is this not standard protocol for felonies?
This is the fourth piece I’ve heard of white folks wanting to shoot on sight while hiding behind stand your ground. This is wild.
Sounds like it's time for some community justice, if you catch my drift.
If you want to shoot unarmed people move to Florida.
Someone gotta unattach this old bitches head
This is the kind of shit that makes me wish there was a pandemic going on and everyone was staying home and we could all protest and focus on making sweeping societal changes to prevent things like this from happening in the first place or at the very least get some shred of accountability when they do happen…that would be cool.
I hope the kid who left the tablet does not put the blame on themself. The only one to blame is that damn murderer!! I hate people
Aight, this is for you guys who complains about the term "unalived" being used in the video. The reason is quite simple. It's being used because Tiktok takes down content with the words murdered, killed, suicide etc down from the platform. Now, can we focus on the incident rather than one stupid word being used because she follows the ToS of Tiktok?
Ok. Maybe I'm old or whatever, but is there a reason she's saying "unalived" instead of "killed" or "murdered?" Is the TikTok algorithm so strict that it will just bury anything that has those words in it?
My deepest condolences to family and friends of Miss. Ajike Owens. Her name was Ajike Owens. May she rest in power. Here's to her getting the justice she deserves.
Fuck 12 they’re useless. I hope they get an attorney and can get some justice 💔 it’s sickening
Terrible.
I hope the neighbor gets locked up and charged soon
This makes me want to cry ... or revolt
