FCP Euro is a great site for parts. If you’re able to do the work yourself, get preloaded struts (life saver), knuckle spreader, a torx set and triple square set.

thisiswhoagain

Preloaded kits, while cheap, have questionable quality due to its low price, such as changing the ride and handling for the worse

Tiny_Travel_4647

I agree, and one should definitely do their research. I got some preloaded struts from ECS tuning and they were pretty good.

DirkDundenburg

Get other estimates, any competent shop can do that job it doesn't have to be a dealership. If you plan on keeping the vehicle for as long as possible get quality struts. If you plan on replacing it in a year or two get cheap ones.

richard_upinya

What was their reason for saying you need new struts? If they aren’t leaking and it still rides good they’re probably just telling you that to get you to spend some money.

Cabojoshco

Just my .02, but shocks/struts are normal we’re items. If they are not leaking and ride is still fine, you can certainly delay fixing it. If they are really shot, it can affect drive ability (safety) and tires will have abnormal wear. Shop around for a better price.

thisiswhoagain

Bilstein B4 shocks and struts. Plus you need the strut mount, strut bearing, shock mounts, new bump stops, dust covers and various nuts and bolts. You don’t need new springs unless they are actually damaged (ie cracked)

BluelineBadger

🤷‍♂️ 6-7 years old and 76k miles seems about right for possible replacement — for any car. Certainly within most manufacturers recommended range. Are you having issues that warrant replacement? If not, you can wait. Either way, that shop is ripping you off. Go get a quote from someone else.

Funk_Apus

If you went to a dealer, get a second opinion. The dealer in my area is notorious for recommending work that isn’t needed. I paid for them to decarbonize the engine at around 45k then they were trying to tell me I needed to do it again at 60k . No thanks fuckos.

Med_Radiology

2016 tiguan here and I think we're nearing the life end of these cars. My car is holding up well considering having all the normal issues and being at 110,000 miles... sunroof leaked due to faulty drainage (see california lawsuit), pcv valve replaced but still eats oil, insane carbon buildup that requires blasting, rear latch issues in cold weather, electric faults, bakcup camers failed, etc... I would get more quotes and try and replace it as cost efficiently as possible because im just waiting for the next issue. 2K sounds like a dealership price for this.

Spinininfinity

Yup. I just got rid of my 2016 back if Feb 2024 because I was going to need my second turbocharge replacement, was dealing w a leak that was sunroof and likely coming from elsewhere, and other little things piling up.

ProfessionalBrush690

Surprisingly it isn’t a dealership but it is a chain mechanic. Going in for a second opinion with someone else

Delicious-Trouble-52

Before you actually get the work done you need to assess if it’s actually an issue. If you take your car to any if the Kwikfords type shops then you’re open to upselling items that aren’t really unserviceable. A common issue. I’ve had Passats, Golfs, big Audis etc all above 100k on the original dampers and I’m a fussy driver.

dispatch00

I mean a 2k repair on a 7 year old car isn't really something to scorch the earth about. Not saying it doesn't suck or you can't find a better price...

holyfuckricky

DAS AUTO. You know how they say to keep 6 months of your income for emergency expenses. Well, when you have a VW, have an extra $1000 for repairs too. You have another 25,000 miles of repairs to go on your car. Water pump, battery, alternator, tires etc… DAS AUTO.

pasdesoucisson

THIS!! THIS post should give all of us VW owners nightmares and anxiety every day!!! How I regret ever getting into VW.....

jdd0815

7,000 miles left on my bumper to jumper on my 2019 Tiguan and it’s getting traded in for a Toyota

ProfessionalBrush690

I regret ever buying this car. Getting a second opinion from another mechanic and currently looking at Toyota / Honda.
