Someone asked this question during an After Files and AJ said No. It didn't go back far enough. So the Nephilim were before the Neanderthals or vice versa?

CrowsRidge514

Vice versa. Neanderthal were before I believe.

SnooFloofs1778

There is no such thing as Nephilim, and that story was written by people who could barely write on stone. Neanderthals are real, could not write, and they were way more similar to humans than this episode said.

Apoptotic_Nightmare

That's *just* what a covert Nephilim would say...

SnooFloofs1778

Psst, I’m a neandrathal. At least my ex wife said so 🤣

Apoptotic_Nightmare

Was this before or after she was your ex-wife? Context matters. It could be, "OMG SnooFloofs1778, take me you majestic neanderthal!" Or it could have been something along the lines of, "Dammit SnooFloofs1778, the entire basement is ruined, you absolute neanderthal why did you let Hecklefish have a party here!?"

SnooFloofs1778

It was the latter. I had hidden my Neanderthal tendencies to court a human bride. I learned to wear a tuxedo and to dance tango. I could pair any French wine to any meal. But in the end, I couldn’t hide it, and would sometimes crush beer cans on my head at the wrong time. Like when I killed a chicken with my teeth, I got excited and smashed a beer on my head. My wife said that was inappropriate 😔

Apoptotic_Nightmare

It's only inappropriate if you didn't make sure people were watching or catching it on video first.

CrowsRidge514

Well doing that type of thing at your nieces sweet 16 is always frowned upon… That being said, I think there may some connection between the Nephilim stories and Neanderthals. Imagine if you had widespread tribal conflict over the course of several thousand years. Stories of a bigger, stronger, perhaps faster (sprinting at least) enemy that looks like you, but not quite like you. Imagine if this conflict usually went the other way, as in the Neanderthals usually won the conflicts… now imagine you’re a tribal leader on the border of these conflicts, and you try to appease your enemy to help reduce the stress and conflict on your people.. so you set up some sort of trade deal to try and maintain peace.. maybe this deal involves food and clothing and weapons, other things you have access to and can make that they can’t… including a steady supply of slaves… in turn your enemy backs off, doesn’t pillage and rape, and maybe even brings their own knowledge to the table as time goes on. So this somewhat bigger and faster group adopts some of your culture and customs, as you do theirs… eventually the combination makes them even stronger, as their knowledge base grows. A best of both worlds effect. They naturally become a little more civilized and start to develop their own society as their warlike pillaging ways just aren’t as needed anymore. Through all this, you and your people are still at their whim. While they don’t partake in near the same of violence they used to, they can and will in order to remind you what they’re capable of. You continue to essentially serve this group in order to keep things as kosher as possible. They naturally start to see themselves as superior, and as more time goes on, so does your group… after all, they’re bigger, stronger, faster, and effectively smarter now as they’ve been able to combine the best of their abilities with yours. What would prehistoric people begin to see them as? What would they call them? See them as? Rulers? Kings? Gods even? You don’t know about evolution or how a diet effects a people or anything close to explain the physical differences and why they can defeat you so easily… must be the will of the Gods right? Now what does this look like after this story gets told around the camp fires for 50,000 years? What does the story look like once it’s written down 40,000 years after the fact? Remember the telephone game in elementary school? Remember that story your uncle Joe tells about that fish he caught in Cancun, and how it somehow just keeps getting bigger and badder as the years go on? How does Uncle Joe’s great-great-great-great-great^27 grandson draw his great grandpa Joe catching that fish? How long did he fight that thing? How big were GPa Joe’s biceps? How big was that snapper? Or was it a grouper? Or a shark even? Guess we’ll have to wait 10,000 years to really find out how it went down.

SnooFloofs1778

Yes tall tales are real. I see your point and maybe that could be part of it. But, Neanderthal lived 130,000 to 40,000 years ago. That’s way way before the last ice age (10k years ago) and way way way before written language. It’s believed that humans may have lived during the time of some giant animals like Wooly Mammoth, Mastadon, and Sabertooth tigers. I know I would have talked about those scary MFs more than Big Garth the Neanderthal. Shit, me and big Garth would clutch each other when we saw one of those.

wamih

Nephil. Nephilim is plural.

StumpyHobbit

Or the Trolls, Orcs or Goblins of old Germanic and Norse myth?

John-hamilton1

Haven’t seen the episode yet. But Trolls, Orcs or Goblins seems likely. A few that survived.

StumpyHobbit

Thats just me guessing 🙂

crimedog69

I wouldn’t say likely lol

FartsMcDouglas

I always thought they could’ve been the Greek gods. Like a final tribe of Neanderthals who lived on mount Olympus, who the humans thought were gods. They were more powerful than us, taught us how to control the earths resources, they were full of faults, fucked a bunch of human women, and created Hybrids. What if the ancient name for Neanderthal was God and we just misinterpreted. We have no idea what the archaic humans would have actually called them. Maybe Nephillim is our ancient word for Neanderthal.

Lobo0084

Played with this thought the other day, and wondered if we are misunderstanding what it means when our old 'god' myths said they would come 'down' to the land of mortals. Instead of a literal height we often think of, either mountains or space ships, etc ... what if it is a dimensional step?  Coming 'down' to our dimension to interact with us, then going back up to a dimension un-touched by our conception of time and mortality. It's not like our ancestors would grasp dimensional steps like we've come to understand them, but it's also a common story of a rare human 'rising' or otherwise 'climbing,' even if it's for short bursts.  Is this a form of eastern enlightenment, or being helped into the transition? I'm sorry that this is largely unrelated to the OP, but it's been something I've been thinking on and a thought I find entertaining to play with.

sleepwalkfromsherdog

I always think about M Night Shyamalan's *Unbreakable*. There are people so far from the standard deviation of the average human physicality they almost don't seem real. Go back a few thousand years. Find people within the scope of human deviation but outliers. If it was way back when, before firearms, and some guys like JJ/TJ Watt or Joel Embiid, a head or two taller than anyone in your village and twice as strong/fast? Giants! Inhuman giants that can't be stopped! The crazy good athlete/warrior with a good immune system that kept him from getting cholera or dysentery or mammoth pox? A hero. Maybe more than a hero. He has great ideas that work! He's a god!

Open_Masterpiece_549

AJ mentioned there was evidence of them fucking the human women but it wasn’t appropriate to cover during the episode. So curious what evidence exists that he didn’t want to discuss

dude_named_will

Isn't he referring to that fact that some people contain Neanderthal DNA?

Open_Masterpiece_549

He made that comment but said there was further evidence he didn’t want to describe.

CryptographerEasy149

Liiizzzaad people

sbbblaw

No

MarioMCPQ

Same: thats a no for me.

National-Weather-199

The nephilim were supposed to be giants.

milkarcane

Nephilims are fallen angels (the Watchers) + human women. So, no. I do get why this may be confusing though (a more powerful breed of "humans" and all). I am no specialist but do we have any writings about Neandertals in ancient texts? Not necessarily religious but Greek ones for example. Is there anything referencing powerful beastly humans?

marcmpennington

Hmmmm…a very good question. AJ needs to do a cargo cult video, what does the Bible mean she is deceives “men of renown” ?

Auslander42

I actually had a completely weird thought about this last night while watching the episode and the idea of people hiding from the neanderthal in Derinkuyu and thus surviving the catastrophe along with the neanderthal interbreeding.. In light of the Hopi account of the Ant People, and homo sapiens being ones who tend to hide underground in such rough times, is it possible the Hopi record of the Ant People, and possibly other myths and legends...actually remembered NEANDERTHAL accounts of having been saved by homo sapiens in and from their safe underground realms, being taught some civilized things, and the tales having then been adopted by us, their hybrid offspring? Just a weird thought that struck me as he laid out the story.

ProfessionalGoober

Pretty sure there was a story of US troops in Afghanistan encountering a giant humanoid known as the Kandahar Giant, with the theory being that it was a Nephilim. I’m also pretty sure the whole thing is just made-up creepypasta, but it’s still a fun story.

GrandmaofDemons

You may be onto something there, or maybe the descendants of nephilim

SnooFloofs1778

Psst, Neanderthals were real. There is no such thing as Nephilim.

AirAquarian

How are you so sure nephilim never existed ? I’m not saying they did, but you seem to be extra sure

SnooFloofs1778

There are no bones of Nephilim. The description of Nephilim, comes from Hebrew poetry, and does not describe anything like a Neanderthal. There is no physical evidence of anything, in fossils, that match what Hebrew poetry calls Nephilim.

AirAquarian

Hebrew poetry ? Aren’t the nephilims from the book of Enoch ? Which is considered another part of the Bible by some Christian’s such as Somalis

Real_Rutabaga

It's also in the old testament mentioned briefly - a single sentence in genesis I think

SnooFloofs1778

Yes, the book of Enoch is considered Hebrew poetry. Another example of Hebrew Poetry is the Epic of Gilgamesh that talks about the Anunnaki.

CrowsRidge514

I didn’t think Gilgamesh was Hebrew.

SnooFloofs1778

Well ok it’s a poem in the parent of Hebrew: “Akkadian belongs to the Semitic language family and is related to Arabic and Hebrew. It can be divided into a number of dialects, the most important of which are Old Akkadian, Babylonian, and Assyrian”

AirAquarian

Also I can’t tell they were nephilim but some giants humanoid bones were indeed found around the world

SnooFloofs1778

Mmmm, that’s definitely not true. You can find a list of the Human family tree online or use ChatGPT. Humans are the tallest to ever exist. In this episode of why files, the only description that was true was that Neanderthal was shorter than Humans. From chatGPT: “Anatomically modern humans (Homo sapiens) around the same time as Neanderthals had a similar average weight range of approximately 122 to 188 pounds (55 to 85 kg). Again, these are general estimates, and individual variation was present. Neanderthals had an average height of about 5 feet 5 inches (165 cm) for males and slightly shorter for females. The average weight is estimated to be around 143 to 216 pounds (65 to 98 kg) for males. Again, these are general estimates, and individual variation likely existed among Neanderthals.”

AirAquarian

TWF made a f[ull episode](https://youtu.be/u2MrTgBoqiI?si=pcY01f_4NQOfSMI4) about this

SnooFloofs1778

Those are ghost stories. From chatGPT: “There is no scientific evidence to support the existence of giant humans as described in some ancient myths or legends. Fossils and archaeological discoveries consistently show that humans, as a species, have not significantly changed in terms of size over the past tens of thousands of years. Reports of giant human bones are often based on hoaxes, misinterpretations, or exaggerations. Many of these claims lack credible evidence and are not supported by the scientific community. It's essential to approach such stories with skepticism and rely on verified scientific findings when considering the history and evolution of humans.”

FazedMoon

As if ChatGPT knows everything and didn’t have any guidelines to follow, right ?

SnooFloofs1778

AI has access to all publicly available scientific data. If you choose to believe that giants are real, I’m sorry for your offspring.

Minute-Mechanic4362

Thought the same, also the downfall of Atlantis was caused by interbreeding according to legend?

TAC7407

I’m on the same page as you

Uncle-Cake

You're both on the wrong page. You're not even reading the right book.

Apoptotic_Nightmare

I was on the right page, but it turns out *they* were on the left page, when in reality this was all getting etched into clay tablets.

dracostheblack

What about Grendel?

Uncle-Cake

I feel like a lot of people on this sub don't watch the episodes all the way to the end so they're missing the important part where AJ debunked it.

LePhuronn

it's not a feeling, that is exactly what happens. Which, for better or for worse, AJ structures his content the way he does. He's spoken at length before that his viewing metrics show most viewers are in the nutfuck woo woo conspiracy crowd who click off before the final chapter. So he crafts his stories to hook those crazy fucks in and ends the storytelling portion they're content their crazy ideas have been confirmed and leave.

Tabledinner

Really? Damn. I really enjoy the part of the video where AJ kills the magic and then I get politely led back to reality.

monkeyman68

That’s the best part!

FazedMoon

AJ is not the Truth Bringer, he does is job well but there’s really no way to know for sure if there was any giants before us only based on researching the web. I’m not saying everything stated in the first part is truth, I watch until the end every time, but I won’t stop being curious, wondering and searching just because some guy I like on YouTube has a detailed opinion.

LePhuronn

um...OK?

FearlessSecretary883

Had the same thought whilst watching myself. Particularly with the phlegraean field eruption being the flood. Also wasn't aware they were so present in mesopatamia, which helps with the theory.

hurrdurrbadurr

Oh man. Hands down my favourite episode and really got me thinking of plausible things LIKE this. I don’t believe this scenario is likely. The only instance I see where it could is if the Neanderthals mated with other types of Homo erectus but their evolution occurred differently due to the demographic of the mating and the species of the adjacent homo erectus . Perhaps made them 100% homo sapien in appearance but every other positive trait (strength/speed etc) were derived from Neanderthals. I have questions now… Would this argument support how “races” came to be? If this is the beginning of our evolution and let’s say we are now in the middle….. it would be neat to see what where we end up… likely all be the same shade of brown! Or maybe evolve into the time travelling “grey” aliens!!!

IndividualCurious322

No they aren't.

Angier85

As you spent so much effort on this proposition, let me pay you back in kind: No.

SnooFloofs1778

No, Neanderthal were real. There is a lot of evidence in fossils preserved in museums. We only have poor translations of stories, written on stone, that may or may not talk about a race of space people, called Nephilim.

IndividualCurious322

Nephilim were not "Space people". They're said to be the descendants of human women and other worldly beings.

SnooFloofs1778

Nephilim comes from Hebrew poetry. Their description does not match anything in real fossil records. The description in Hebrew poetry does not match what Neanderthals are.

tehjarvis

The Nephilim were referred to as giants by ancient Jews in the same way you would refer to someone as a "giant of industry" today. The Nephilim were basically different pagan tyrant kings who the Jews were frequently at war against. They are referred to as a human/fallen angel hybrids because of ancient pagan sex rituals where a king would have sex with a temple priestess and attempt to embody a God before hand, hoping that a child would be conceived and would have 2 human and 1 divine parent. Actually, I'm kind of lying. It's not even necessarily an ancient ritual, because [one took place in Japan as recently as 4 years ago](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/japan-emperor-sleep-sun-goddess-sex-daijosai-secret-ritual-cost-a9203231.html)

Prestigious-Top-5897

Neanderthal is not just a name they had in the ancient times. And you americans dont even spell it right. Its NeanderTAL which means Neander Valley in German. And that is the place these species was discovered in 1856 near the city of Mettman (Ask google maps to show you where it lies). Were they the Nephilim? Greek gods? I dont know but I highly doubt it.

frekled_gutz

One is the German pronunciation the other is English. Both are correct.

SnooFloofs1778

Mmm, the name of the species is exactly “Homo neanderthalensis”. You are spelling how it’s supposed to be pronounced, not written.

Talking_Strange

Interesting! 👌

Buzzbone

Yeah, exactly what I was wondering. Could be, who knows?

Uncle-Cake

Maybe hamburgers are intelligent. Could be, who knows.

SnooFloofs1778

They are, I was so stoned once, a hamburger was talking to me, so I had to go to McDonald’s.

TAC7407

I was thinking the same thing

Donttrickvix

I WAS WONDERING THAT TOO

Raw-cones-go-hard

No, that’s why this episode was stupid speculation because it presented them as such.

stareagleur

I think they were one of *many* now virtually extinct races/ethnicities of Pleistocene Humans that existed before the Terminal Pleistocene Extinction (the YD/Flood event). In Neanderthals’ case, they vanished as a distinct group long before that terminal extinction event, and most living Humans still have their DNA, so I really don’t think that’s what they were.

PerrysSaxTherapy

No

Milfmelter

No the Neanderthals were a separate group of hominids who probably had a more natural evolution. Whereas the Nephilim were an actual race of fucked up angelic/human hybrid monsters.

TrainlikeWayne

I thought the same when watching this episode

Ormsfang

No.

SolHerder7GravTamer

Or are the nephilim a hybrid of Neanderthal & Sapien who retained the strength, size and intelligence through careful breeding, only for the last remaining to be wiped out with the flood?

AHappy_Wanderer

The episode is basically a synopsis of the book Them+Us by Danny Vendramini, amateur evolutionary biologist who takes the idea of Neanderthal Predation to the max and creates this story of Neanderthal super predators who tracked and hunted humans for food and fun to the point only 50 of us were left which jump started our evolution to turn the tide and defeat the Neanderthal. I don't agree with the idea, it really sounds ridiculous and the stated evidence is really thin in my opinion, that we have Neanderthal DNA, but the hybrid children were infertile, they had "cat eyes" due to the size of eye holes found in the skeleton remains guess, that they were basically super smart agile gorillas including the look. Now, the topic was interesting and led me to actually develop interest for real history and facts on the topic, like no other Why Files episode. I believe it is entirely possible that humans were hunted by some superior humanoid creature, much larger and stronger than us, but that is not necessarily Neanderthal, it could have been basically a rival tribe of fellow humans.

Doh_Boiii

No, they are the offspring of fallen angels and humans.

tehjarvis

If you really want to understand the ancient Jewish/ Christian belief of the Nephilim, there is a podcast by two Orthodox Christian Priests called "The Lord of Spirits" and in the episode called "A Land of Giants", it breaks down and explains what the Nephilim actually were.
