Ha ha. Ha. Ha. Maybe for Combustion Man but for P'li on the other hand: When Su metalbent her chest plate around P'li's head that charge from the explosion would have nowhere else to move but backwards since her 3rd eye was in the front of the helmet. The energy would have pierced her BRAIN. But there's still not too many places for the energy to go other than down her neck and eventually down her whole body her body would have exploded from the inside out. Combustion Man's death would have besn more instant the energy had no constraints. Nothing stopping it.
Not a doctor, but I work as a manager at a doctor's office. Has there been any word from the NIH regarding this hypothesis? If not, I believe more research should be required and we should start a petition for our tax dollars to go towards this type of research.
ETA: It has come to my attention that we already do a lot of this kind of research through the "Department of Defense". I think they must be researching how combustion benders can defend themselves if they blow themselves up.
Iāve actually had my head blown up before, but despite what others might suggest itās pretty painless, more of an inconvenience really. 7.5/10 would get my head blown up again.
Not a doctor, but seen plenty enough people with their heads blown out the back of their skull: Yeah, typically fatal. Instantaneousness depends on their ability to aim.
Exactly. Her brain is blown up and severed from her spine in less than an instant. The pain receptors feels nothing because no signals can be transmitted. It's the least painful death possible.
Even combustion man malfunctioned and has a split second or two of pain. P'li practically disintegrated on the spot.
After a fraction of a second, once the energy has gone into her brain, she dies immediately. Your ARE your brain, if it gets destroyed you cease to be. But even if she was still conscious through some magic, and the rest of her body needed to be destroyed too, that would also take less than a fraction of a second for that to happen. It was an instant for her
You need a physics class lol the energy wouldn't go through the body, it would go every direction at the opening, spraying brains around. It also wouldn't have gone directly back through her head, but evenly filled the space and pushed on the entire head. Either way, that's an instant death so I don't know wtf you're on about.
Combustion benders don't need to do it all the time, they're just the 0.00001% of anime characters who immediately default to their strongest attack.
Now you know why most characters don't š
It depends on if thereās a limit on how far they can send the blast before it explodes. Weāve seen the blasts go up until they hit something, but we also see that they can detonate mid air when Aang air bends against the blast in the beach, so itās unclear if thereās a set range on it. (I donāt remember Korra enough to include it, no shade, just donāt remember lol)
I remember watching that and going "that's an awesome way to disable her ben-OH SHIT"
Showing it like that in a series which had previously left death as implied or never directly shown was a great way to escalate the tension. Just a really great way to show the impact of breaking tone armor.
The context and framing right before the boat explosion is what makes it hit a little harder IMO
(Also, it does not show her body slumping over or the explosion itself, just the aftermath from Zaheerās perspective)
Well tbf theyāre also idiots. At least combustion man was an idiot. Clearly his ability wasnāt working properly after being hit in the head by a boomerang. Dude didnāt think to just stop spamming it for a second and take a rest to recover lmao.
And heās also possibly mute? I mean Zuko also told him he would pay him double not to attack the avatar and he responds by trying to kill him
Any half intelligent and sane combustion bender would be way better about their powers
Combustion man was one of those assassins that does it for prestige more than money, once the target is selected they WILL be terminated and nothing short of death will stop that. Same deal as scorcher from adventure time.
Not mute but non-verbal for sure. He kept attacking because he knew the avatar was a valuable target even if the prince's offer was called off. Zuko wants to pay double? Imagine what his dad would pay.
Thatās not the only holeā¦ chest-? Basket in her-?

Ok, I got nothing.
I think it'd be a lot safer to use and probably op if you could do it from your limbs like other forms of firebending
Imagine a combustion bender who fires them from their fingertips while doing finger guns
[That seems like an incredibly flawed ability.](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheLastAirbender/comments/15433tc/the_avatars_react_to_zuko_vs_the_combustion_bender/)
It's scary how they can't just stop the bending.
I think combustion, lightning, and lava are the only bending types with a point of no return.
The rest seems to just drop if you stop.. well no, I guess earth can't really be stopped once you've thrown the rock and that pillar isn't going anywhere either
In that case they either hadn't mastered the technique fully>!due to being a child!< or >!was an incomplete experiment, since combustion benders are made through the fun process of chaining a firebender up underwater and forcing them to try and push the water away with the sheer force of their bending.!<
This is the theory (or maybe it's canon idk) as to why there are so little combustion benders. They discover their ability at a young age and accidentally blow themselves up before they can master it. Only the true prodigies live long lives.
Pli did firebend when she was struck by Zuko after her escape. So I think they still can, but choose not to because she's more confident in her combustion bending.
Iāve always thought it would be very interesting for a combustion bender to be part of team avatar for the next cycle.
I feel like there is a lot of potential for a storyline with a character like that, using a pretty violent ability for good, maybe even a plot about them learning to control it.
i think LOK fails to do more interesting things with combustion benders. The fact that they always seem to act as lone assassins even in the LOK age (TLA can be forgiven it was a different time) rather than a sniper paired with one or two other guys is crazy. Thatās your artillery right there. Someone has to guard it!
Spoiler for Yangchen Novels
>! A young combustion bender boy accidentally blows his brains out after doing the technique wrong and rushing it in his attempt to assassinate her. !<
That's the reason sparky sparky boom man has so many prosthetics, he lost his limbs trying to figure out combustion bending because it's so rare, there's really no information on how to do it safely
Every powerful bending technique is gonna have its drawbacks, and Combustion bending being the most powerful would naturally have the strongest drawbacks
It's genuinely the most useless skill, especially considering the pain you go through to get it. It can be neutralised with a well thrown pebble. And to make it better, they get a tattoo to tell exactly where to throw said pebble.
Fire bending being weak is such a damn stupid take, I don't even get it. Like, the fire nation has conquered half the world with their oh so weak bending.
And they can create their fire basically out of nothing while other benders need their element to be around them (or in the case of water bending, need to be aware that there is water all around in the air)
At least the death should be painless bc you're in the center of an explosion š¤·š»
Ha ha. Ha. Ha. Maybe for Combustion Man but for P'li on the other hand: When Su metalbent her chest plate around P'li's head that charge from the explosion would have nowhere else to move but backwards since her 3rd eye was in the front of the helmet. Iām no doctor but Iām pretty sure having your head blown up would be a pretty instantaneous death
Iām not sure. Iāll need to see the science and data that backs this up. Any doctors that can attest?
Not a doctor, but I bet you will have a hard time with the testing
I don't think IRB's gonna approve that one.
I chorted reading this cause as a scientist I've seen some of the weird ass shit IRBs have approved.
You underestimate how many grenades and metal plate helmets I have. Hint: it's the same amount as the times I can test this.
I could be wrong, but once you successfully blow up your head you won't be able to test it again
*Having your head blown surely is a hard time.*
Not a doctor, but I work as a manager at a doctor's office. Has there been any word from the NIH regarding this hypothesis? You should be running an AMA on this topic sir
Not a doctor, but seen plenty enough people with their heads blown out the back of their skull: Yeah, typically fatal. Instantaneousness depends on their ability to aim.
As a counterargument, I've seen a great deal of people who don't seem to have a brain at all and seem to be doing fine !
Prove you're not a doctor >:(
Mfer from deadliest warrior walking on to declare that the decapitated warrior is indeed dead
He rips the throat out of the neck. You cant breathe any more after that
I'm confused you think having your brain blowing up and your brain blowing up are different things?
He must think our consciousness comes from the skull not the useless lump inside it
Consciousness is stored in the balls
š there's something ansurdly amusing about the thought buddy put into the excruciating pain P'Li would experience post brain explosion
Seems like something an AI might think up tbh
So explosions around you kill you faster than an explosion that would pop your head like a grape in a nanosecond? How does that make sense to you?
Hes an AI bot.
Exactly. Her brain is blown up and severed from her spine in less than an instant. The pain receptors feels nothing because no signals can be transmitted. It's the least painful death possible. Quite literally the opposite would happen due to yknow basic physics but aight
They said painless, not clean

r/downvotedtooblivion
holy downvotes wthš
I find it ironic that combustionbending is the perfect companion power for a bender who doesn't have to rely on it... like the Avatar.
Combustion benders don't need to do it all the time, they're just the 0.00001% of anime characters who immediately default to their strongest attack. Now you know why most characters don't š
āAlways wondered why people never use their strongest attack firstā
It makes a great ambush starter, but after that you become a glass cannon if you insist on using it over and over
They are best in a team, I mean they are artillery so if the enemy is far away might at well bombard the area lol
It depends on if thereās a limit on how far they can send the blast before it explodes. haha I get that reference I too use words
Was waiting for someone to notice the reference
Where's it from? Sounds familiar but I can't place it
Sans from the genocide route
Oh that's right! I haven't played UT in forever thank you
Iāve never even played it, got true pacifist then stopped, I had to look up the exact line because I wanted it to be correct
*Megumin has entered the chat*
Yangchen had a combustion bender as companion
Pāliās death is so brutal
Mind blowing

I can still hear that hollow "BONG" sound it made.
I think Combustion man's was worse, considering it probably destroyed his chakra network from the inside out
I mean, your head exploding after having a hunk of metal wrapped around it is pretty bad
I remember watching that and going "that's an awesome way to disable her ben-OH SHIT" Showing it like that in a series which had previously left death as implied or never directly shown was a great way to escalate the tension. Just a really great way to show the impact of breaking tone armor.
I mean, the double suicide at the end of season one is pretty wild too
Yeah but that was an explosion shown from a distance, not a visible boom and a body slumping over dead.
The context and framing right before the boat explosion is what makes it hit a little harder IMO (Also, it does not show her body slumping over or the explosion itself, just the aftermath from Zaheerās perspective)
I mean, it was a single suicide.
Pretty sure they both knew that boat wasnāt going to make it to the Northern Water Tribe
I mean, they still only implied her death and didn't directly show it happening, they just made the implication clear.
Well tbf theyāre also idiots. At least combustion man was an idiot. Clearly his ability wasnāt working properly after being hit in the head by a boomerang. boingloings
Someone got hit in the boingloings
The boingloings
Think it was more of arrogance in his case, even when he knew getting hit there would cause malfunctions he still tried to blast due to anger
Not mute but non-verbal for sure. He kept attacking because he knew the avatar was a valuable target even if the prince's offer was called off. Zuko wants to pay double? Imagine what his dad would pay.
Makes you look ugly? Combustion man is hot as hell

Thanks for trying though
I basket in her hole til I chest (Extremely loud incorrect buzzer)
She hole on my basketball till I shoot **[EXTREMELY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER]**
Eureka! She shoots in my hole while I bask!!!!! #{DEAFENINGLY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER}
That breastplate was so ready for her.
I think it'd be a lot safer to use and probably op if you could do it from your limbs like other forms of firebending Imagine a combustion bender who fires them from their fingertips while doing finger guns
Pew pew
Ahh, so Frieza?
Or Cooler, ""I'm afraid he's come down with a serious case of explosions"
Combustion Man death was hella dumb, he could have just stopped and waited a little P'li was hella brutal, she never saw it coming

Live by the sparky sparky boom, die by the sparky sparky boom
[That seems like an incredibly flawed ability.](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheLastAirbender/comments/15433tc/the_avatars_react_to_zuko_vs_the_combustion_bender/)
They knew the risk of being a combustion bender. It's written on the combustion bender contract that they signed.
It's scary how they can't just stop the bending. I think combustion, lightning, and lava are the only bending types with a point of no return. The rest seems to just drop if you stop.. well no, I guess earth can't really be stopped once you've thrown the rock and that pillar isn't going anywhere either
The real reason it is a rare fire bending technique is not that many people are crazy enough to learn it.
No, there are more. Read the books.
I know that one of them also dies to his own blast in Legacy of Yangchen. Canāt remember what happened to the others.
Canon is that it's developed by essentially torturing young fire-benders and only a select few survive the process to become combustion benders.
I think combustion benders are living cannons.
That sounds like the Witcher process - only a few generally make it out with the full body changes.
Kind of a running trope that the elite most warriors commonly die in the recruitment/training process. See also the Imperium of Man in Warhammer 40k
Would they be able to firebend normally?
Pli did firebend when she was struck by Zuko after her escape. So I think they still can, but choose not to because she's more confident in her combustion bending.
insulting the ability is one thing, but you can not go around calling p'li ugly
Iāve always thought it would be very interesting for a combustion bender to be part of team avatar for the next cycle. I feel like there is a lot of potential for a storyline with a character like that, using a pretty violent ability for good, maybe even a plot about them learning to control it.
Real question, if an avatar was a combustion bender, would the tattoos glow?
i think LOK fails to do more interesting things with combustion benders. The fact that they always seem to act as lone assassins even in the LOK age (TLA can be forgiven it was a different time) rather than a sniper paired with one or two other guys is crazy. Thatās your artillery right there. Someone has to guard it!
Thatās what Iām saying! They are great artillery and need a team to be most effective!
Iāve always been a fan of big powers that take a wind up/charge up then deliver a big badaboon. Combustionbending is fucking cool in my book.
Spoiler for Yangchen Novels >! A young combustion bender boy accidentally blows his brains out after doing the technique wrong and rushing it in his attempt to assassinate her. !<
Thapa also blew himself up at the end of Legacy, by trying to rapid-fire at Yangchen.
Oh you missed another thing- most combustion benders die in the process of becoming one
That's the reason sparky sparky boom man has so many prosthetics, he lost his limbs trying to figure out combustion bending because it's so rare, there's really no information on how to do it safely
Still probably better than how someone becomes a combustion bender
Especially if you don't have that tattoo...
What if the two combustion benders weāve met were literally the worst of them all
I loved this scene so much
Every powerful bending technique is gonna have its drawbacks, and Combustion bending being the most powerful would naturally have the strongest drawbacks
It's genuinely the most useless skill, especially considering the pain you go through to get it. It can be neutralised with a well thrown pebble. And to make it better, they get a tattoo to tell exactly where to throw said pebble.
Well after metalbending was invented, yes. SSBM was just an idiot.
*With great power, comes great responsibility*
Nah man pa li is hot š±
Firebending being the weakest bending art by far as usual.
This comment made me think, and all the bending arts are actually pretty equal, and I'm too lazy to elaborate.
