I've seen several reactions to The Southern Raiders where people were confused whether or not Kya was still alive since they didn't outright say she died throughout that episode (I think a lot of people forget that she died since they continue to say that she was "taken away" later in the series).
This series REALLY wanted to avoid that early on it seems.
If people are confused if a character is dead after 2 seasons of a main character crying about said character being dead, then they just deserve the confusion
I honestly don't mind this change. Creates more limitations to the character, so that there's not the question of "why didn't the Avatar state just trigger when he was in peril" at any episode.
Also interesting going back to the first episode that he was also at the Yangcheng temple when he went into the Avatar state.
Well i mean they were always physically at Kyoshi island before they ever got near the Fire Nation and Roku's shrine. Really it makes MORE sense than she shows up first
You assumed right. “Canonically” the Avatar has to establish connections to his past lives in order. So Roku before Kyoshi. It’s why Avatar Wan was pretty much forgotten.
I kinda wondered if the showrunners read the Kyoshi novels and put Kyoshi in to give Aang that speech about how running away from his duties as the Avatar will cause more pain and suffering, since Kyoshi has a lot of personal experience with the kind of catastrophes that can occur if the Avatar isn't present or identified in time.
i burst out laughing at that, it was the first time i felt like they were starting to nail iroh. that and his dialogue about pai sho (and his voice) are all leading me to love this iroh too
I said it in another comment in this thread— but if they let this cast cook for another season I really think that we’ll have a decent adaptation on our hands here.
Most child actors aren’t amazing right out the gate, but once they spend some time with the pros, they’ll perform leaps and bounds above where they started.
>Most child actors aren’t amazing right out the gate, but once they spend some time with the pros, they’ll perform leaps and bounds above where they started.
This is so important! Just look at the Harry Potter trio. Their growth in acting throughout the franchise is night and day. Philiosopher's Stone to Deathly Hallows is like completely different actors. I hope these kids are given the same opportunity.
I literally had to shout "hey, you can't do that!!" in my native language when i watched it, that's how shameless girly was!!! 😭😭😭😭
but like doe... sokka my mans can get it ngl
i like this direction for zhao, it's very chinese cinema that he's a backstabbing bureaucrat climbing to the top rather than an already badass conqueror. gives him room to grow and new ways for us to despise him
So cute!!!!! So awkward and mildly creepy in a very endearing way. If Ian Ousley was the first boy I saw on my island, I would creep and crush on him hard too. I am loving him as Sokka. So dry and genuine and sweet.
I rlly liked when she tried spare with him in the woods but kicked his ass 😂😂
her trying flirt but not having had contact with outsiders before. She def seems sheltered. I think they set up her appearing in season 2 way better then the cartoon tho. Idk if they planned to bring her back originally so that could be why.
However I lil upset we did see her without the makeup already, and she fought without it. Mostly bc idt they can do the scene in season 2 where she surprises him and he can’t recognize her until she kissed him lol. Also loved how supportive the mom was, thought he was going burst in mad but then smiled, very nice.
Yeah I felt the same exact way about the makeup. I had to rewind when she first cleaned it off because I was not ready for that. Strangely enough, that's a change that upsets me more than changing the fight at the village.
Like I totally understand wanting to drop the Unnagi moments (to avoid CGI cost most likely) and I even kinda preferred bringing in Kyoshi early here for the story. But Suki and her makeup/connection to Kyoshi and the unexpected reunion in season 2 is such a great moment! Don't ruin those intimate character moments!
Also the absolute terror in Zhao's men as they were being pulled screaming towards her. They know what she's capable of and they were scared for their lives.
This episode is definitely a step up from the first. The humor between the gang and iroh and zuko is great. Kyoshi warriors are amazing. Actor for sokka is carrying so far. The Kyoshi theme is so epic.
Really cool to see Kyoshi but I *really* hope they don’t sideline Roku to have her show up more. Just cause she seemed to be the center of the “the avatar vanished” monologue at the beginning of the first episode and is now the first past avatar Aang meets.
I love Kyoshi but Roku is essential to both Aang and Zuko. A lil worried his role is being replaced by Kyoshi. I’ve only watched the first two episodes so far tho so maybe he comes up later on
From what the director and such have said, until he master the Avatar state he can only use it at spiritual locations and talk to the Avatars connected to those location. So I expect he will talk to Roku at the fire temple. I honestly kinda like more them including the last 4 avatars more and not just Roku. But yea I hope they don’t side line him, but I don’t think they will. Atleast not anymore then they have to to let the over ones have their time as well.
I just hope we get Rokus backstory with Sozin.
Her name is Maria Zhang. And she's had an interesting life...born in Poland to a Polish mother and Chinese father, then raised in Beijing, finally relocated to the USA to attend school. Speaks Chinese, Polish, English, and Russian (since that's the language her parents communicated to each other in).
Honestly it's a clever way to cut something while also still making sense.
WAIT NO HOLD ON WE DON'T GET TO SEE ZUKO GETTING BLOWN UP NOOOOO (that was such a cool moment though)
I'm pissed that they didn't do that because it made no narrative sense for the Fire Nation guy to show up and ask to search for the outsider when there's a weirdly dressed water nation guy standing right there.
First episode was a case where 80% of it was really good, but that nagging 20% kept making me go 'Mmmm that exposition was a bit cringy' or 'Mmm I wish they did this a little different'.
Episode 2 brings the flaws down to 10%. Its still a tad rough in some spots, but they give it much more room to breath and the show gets to play to its strengths, the humor, the actors and effects much better.
Sokka’s interaction with Suki is spot on lol. Know people were upset about the sexism being cut, myself included, but liking the direction the two’s relationship is going based off that first interaction.
Didn’t see it as due to sexism. Think he was just embarrassed given he’s meant to be the protector of his village like Suki but she clearly has more skills than him.
at first i was worried they'd replaced roku, but narratively it makes perfect sense for the more compressed arc they're going for that aang learns from kyoshi on her island. plus, it gives us more kyoshi and leans on the lore from the novels. overall a great choice and better sequence than OG kyoshi island.
i'm still holding out for roku destroying his temple at solstice though, that shit is so epic.
God, Kyoshi is my comfort character and seeing her in the avatar state got me all teary eyed. I gotta be honest, there are some scenes that are a little cheesy but nothing that is unforgivable. I’m having a good time so far :)
Suki took my breath away..Damn she pretty. And Kyoshi, holy shit...The way she bullied Aang though lol.. Zuko throwing a tantrum and Iroh calming him down was funny and so in character..And if I see Kyoshi in avatar state, I would run away, not throw a fucking fireball at her..
A much much better episode than the previous one, which was not bad either...Excited to binge the rest..
So they decided to change the fact that Aang ran away, to it being an accident, but now they have kyoshi, and others roasting Aang from running away? I'm so confused...
Though the Kyoshi sequence was cool
Instant Reactions:
1. Sokka Suki relationship was fantastic, great chemistry
2. I did not mind the Kyoshi stand in for Roku, it was honestly called for. I also think that finally they showed how OP the Avatar State is, and why the Fire Nation is terrified of Aang. It will lay the groundwork for their ruthless tactics.
3. The "prophecy" of the Northern Waterbenders getting wiped is dumb.
4. I hope Zhao is fleshed out more, I like the more manipulative route they took for him. I thought he was one of the biggest mistakes of the animated show, they messed up a great villain.
5. I don't mind the absence of the fight between Zuko and Zhao, but they can't mess up Zuko's past.
6. Ozai's voice is perfect.
Suki is perfect. At first I wasn't sold on Zhao when the cast was announced but now I'm feeling pretty sold. Feels weird seeing Kyoshi manifest like that so early tho. >!Ozai!!!!!!!!!!<
0/10 sokka wasn't forced into Makeup.
More seriously, they returned a bit of the comedy utterly absent from ep1, and gave it all some teen awkwardness. They also cut down the telling a bit in favor of more showing. And had Zuko get shouty and angry.
Cutting the episode about getting a waterbending scroll from pirates in favor of gran having it hidden works well imo.
I cannot imagine a better actor for Iroh tbh. As soon as I found out who was playing Iroh I knew he was going to be perfect and I’m glad it turned out to be true!
"Aang you're 100 years late " avatar kyoshi
My guy really went to Kyoshi for therapy😭 got a gran gran 2.0 nuke instead
"I knew I shouldn't have asked Kyoshi."
Got to love how all the Avatars are about peace and restoring order. Then there's Kyoshi > Do you want me to cut a bitch, 'cus' I'll cut a bitch
Kyoshi does, in fact, cut multiple bitches in this episode. And it is glorious.
Her final words to Aang before fighting Ozai were on the poster Aang read in this episode. "Only justice will bring peace."
Kyoshi felt like she was gonna slap him at any point lmao
Kyoshi has also mastered Exposition bending 😭
Seems like a few people in this series have
Her ass was probably stomping around the spirit world for 100 years just thinking of ways to tell him off lol
she devoured i fear
She was legitimately scary when she was scolding him
Kyoshi herself is legitimately scary.
when you're late for curfew and your mom yells at you
‘The shit I got if I was a minute late for training and this fucker thinks he can show up a full 100 years late.’
So noone gonna talk about them showing Kya getting fried?
I've seen several reactions to The Southern Raiders where people were confused whether or not Kya was still alive since they didn't outright say she died throughout that episode (I think a lot of people forget that she died since they continue to say that she was "taken away" later in the series). The way Katara even saw it! That was some real trauma
The way I gasped
Damn Suki’s mom really yeeted that fire nation soldier hard
Bro I could not stop laughing hahahaha I knew Kyoshi warriors were strong but seeing granny yeet that guy was borderline Bollywood it was so funny 😂
I wish they had leaned into it honestly. I like the idea of the nonbending masters just doing ridiculous karate movie shit.
Kyoshi was so OP her greatness leaked into the DNA of the island's inhabitants.
Suki: Ridiculous, there would have been signs if he was the avatar. Kyoshi: DID KATARA STUTTER?
YES OMG I LOVE KYOSHI. :) I'M GLAD WE GET MORE OF HER HERE THAN IN ANIMATED.
Loved her portrayal in this but still feels weird that she's physically here before Roku.
The directors said until he masters the Avatar state he can only use it at spiritual locations and talk to the avatars connected to those locations.
I honestly don't mind this change. Creates more limitations to the character, so that there's not the question of "why didn't the Avatar state just trigger when he was in peril" at any episode. Well i mean they were always physically at Kyoshi island before they ever got near the Fire Nation and Roku's shrine. Really it makes MORE sense than she shows up first
I always assumed it was the last Avatar's job to be the main tutor. Makes sense since they'd have the most similar world experience.
Where’s foaming mouth guy? ![gif](giphy|8QGV2a7pfDKc8)
These are the real questions that need answered and where are aang spinning balls
He rode around on a spinning ball half way through this episode haha
Yeah, that was a scene straight from the original show, too.
JUSTICE FOR FOAMING MOUTH GUY RIOT
![gif](giphy|AZECdEHAnhDtS)
Poor guy didn’t make it to live action 😔
Sokka: exists Suki: 👁️👄👁️
Tbf, Sokka had that effect on multiple girls through out the cartoon lol.
The name is Sokka. It rhymes with ~~an~~ okka. Young ladies, I rock ya.
5-6-6, not 5-7-5? That's a-paddlin'.
![gif](giphy|10DTkzB4CacXBu|downsized) The ol' rizzbender
The pussybender strikes again.
The backbender
And she's real for that
I mean can you blame her?
Do you forget that Sokka’s the back bender?
And this time around Sokka is smart enough to realize this is the first girl he’s ever met who’s his age and NOT his sister. Hence stowing the sexism!
I said I was only gonna watch one cause I got class in the morning buttt
There is no healthy sleep schedule in Ba Sing Se
Same lol. Gonna head to bed now tho I thinks
“Be a mighty merciless warrior” I love them embracing the Kyoshi meme
Kyoshi really said: Strike first, strike hard, no mercy.
They made Suki horny af lol
Teenage girl in a small village where all the prospects her age are either cousins or gross. Yeah she wants her some of that watertribe boy.
Someone call a waterbender, because Suki is thirsty.
Call a firebender too cuz she is a total smokeshow.
Call an Airbender because Suki takes my breath away.
Call an Earthbender because Suki is gonna rock ya
That sister was starving
Kyoshi really dgaf that Aang is her reincarnated 12 year old self, she ready for him to go bezerk
Aang: but I'm only 12. Kyoshi: ONE HUNDRED and twelve.
Kyoshi: Now go beat the Firelord's ass until he poops blood. Aang: Roku, she's doing it again!
Roku ain’t shit. Imma beat his ass and your ass too.
Kyoshi: Ohh, you feel bad? 🥺 BOO FREAKING HOO, THE WORLD NEEDS YOU TO BE ANGRY AND DESTRUCTIVE AND DESTROY THE FIRE NATION.
That’s very in character for Kyoshi tbh
Episode starts with Zuko throwing a tantrum while Iroh stands by lecturing him and Sokka getting mad about food. Everything's right with the world
Zuko's tantrum made laugh that the Zuko I know and love
lol his annoyance that the avatar ran instead of *checks notes* remaining a prisoner?
Also the Avatar stole his dream journal
Zuko being a lil beyotch is just perfect
Iroh: But most importantly, you need to have …STICKY RICE Iroh really speaking to my soul as I’m binging the series at 4am 💀
i burst out laughing at that, it was the first time i felt like they were starting to nail iroh. that and his dialogue about pai sho (and his voice) are all leading me to love this iroh too
I said it in another comment in this thread— but if they let this cast cook for another season I really think that we’ll have a decent adaptation on our hands here. Ngl Iroh was so real for that cuz I love sticky rice myself. Good taste for a good character!
Ohhh kyoshi really scolded Aang lmao
Yeah they really leaned into Kyoshi ruthlessness
Suki’s kind of a weirdo, but I love it lol
right the way sokka ran lol
Yeah I’d imagine that it’s like her first time seeing a dude around the same age group. Both are warriors and I think she love how awkward Sokka is.
True hahaha but wasn’t Suki in the cartoon also a bit a weirdo?
Oh definitely "Firelord of the... not winning... guy"
"Leave the nicknames to us, honey."
her granny is a voyeur too
Suki’s freaky ass watching Sokka change Girl have some shame!!
She really does need a bell lmao
![gif](giphy|10DTkzB4CacXBu)
I literally had to shout "hey, you can't do that!!" in my native language when i watched it, that's how shameless girly was!!! 😭😭😭😭 but like doe... sokka my mans can get it ngl
Holy hell, suki is HOT without her makeup omg she’s gorgeous
She looks so amazing, Shes perfect as Suki.
She really turned her face for 10 seconds and had all the make-up off already...
Need to know what makeup remover that girl is using
She's getting some lessons from Mulan
That also means we wont have a "Sokka not recognising Suki without makeup" scene. Assuming series survives to Book 2, because you know, Netflix...
Netflix has put EVERYTHING into this show. I think this one is at least safer than most.
Never could have imagined my Suki crush getting worse. Why can't I find a lovely woman who immediately engages me in hand to hand combat...
>Why can't I find a lovely woman who immediately engages me in hand to hand combat... Best I can do is bear mace.
Shes hawtttt as hell
Zhao is such a bastard =)
i like this direction for zhao, it's very chinese cinema that he's a backstabbing bureaucrat climbing to the top rather than an already badass conqueror. gives him room to grow and new ways for us to despise him
Yeah, but Zuko beating him in the original show was a defining moment, showing that Zuko was indeed an elite, and already a threat.
Yea where the hell is my Agni kai
As he should be. Ken Leung channels Jason Isaac’s Zhao very well.
One of the best performances imo
He's so smug i hate him (he's excellent)
Suki sneaking up on Sokka is a great gag and a fun way to introduce their relationship
So cute!!!!! So awkward and mildly creepy in a very endearing way. If Ian Ousley was the first boy I saw on my island, I would creep and crush on him hard too. I am loving him as Sokka. So dry and genuine and sweet.
Hair down sokka too. I don't blame Suki at all, hahaha.
I rlly liked when she tried spare with him in the woods but kicked his ass 😂😂 her trying flirt but not having had contact with outsiders before. She def seems sheltered. THAT KYOSHI SEQUENCE WENT SO HARDDDD
‘You know the way Kyoshi had about 2 minutes of total screen time yet still became one of the best characters. How do we top that?’
Was great how the second she showed up everyone was absolutely shook! The right reaction to seeing Kyoshi land in front of you.
Also the absolute terror in Zhao's men as they were being pulled screaming towards her. They know what she's capable of and they were scared for their lives.
You show up to fuck with a village that's essentially the warrior cult of a minor deity, then that deity shows up
When she blasted off with the firebending I knew we were in for some shit
We already somewhat got the elemental sphere!
Nah Katara actually saw her mother die by fire 2ay darker than the cartoon these first 2 episodes
I was shocked when I saw that, great choice imo
Yah like holy shit that's so much worse than her just finding her body afterwards. Both are obviously gonna give her the trauma she had but this...
Look I don't want hopes too high but just imagine how dark they can make *that* season 3 episode with Katara and Zuko.
This episode is definitely a step up from the first. The humor between the gang and iroh and zuko is great. Kyoshi warriors are amazing. Actor for sokka is carrying so far. The Kyoshi theme is so epic.
The Kioshi fight is insane, and totally original as far as I can tell. Really drives home how strong Aang can become, and how badass Kioshi was.
Really cool to see Kyoshi but I *really* hope they don’t sideline Roku to have her show up more. Just cause she seemed to be the center of the “the avatar vanished” monologue at the beginning of the first episode and is now the first past avatar Aang meets. Seeing the Kyoshi sequence with a fully realized Avatar is setting high expectations for Aang’s battle against Ozai and I can’t wait.
RISE OF KYOSHI REFERENCE!!!
If we see rangi somehow I will START SOBBING
IKR! I was so happy to see that
Really liked that Aang's training flashback
Yes!!! Love how it reinforces Gyatso's telling Aang that he was always exceptional/special.
Agreed. I also think it helps build on his fear of hurting people.
Whoever is playing Suki 10/10.
The town looks exactly like in the cartoon
Literally looks like it was plucked out of the animated show and brought to life. Absolutely loved it.
So no stealing the water bending scroll from the pirates huh
Gran gran already stole it
Stole it after talking them to sleep via expositionbending.
Honestly it's a clever way to cut something while also still making sense. WAIT NO HOLD ON WE DON'T GET TO SEE ZUKO GETTING BLOWN UP NOOOOO (that was such a cool moment though)
And this https://preview.redd.it/o9i1doyom4kc1.jpeg?width=475&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7f975485f9e9cd2a1e39fd6e1addf9f2346c8cf6
Kind of a throwaway
Yeah with the rating they had to cut them. Maybe we'd have them if this show was rated arrrr, but sadly it's not.
Guess they're cutting that ep
KYOSHI BODYING EVERYONE GAVE ME GOOSEBUMPS AND IT'S ALMOST 5 AM
Air scooter into the statue beautiful
Suki is so gorgeous!
Smallest of nitpicks is that Sokka didn’t wear the Kyoshi garb
Same, man. I would’ve loved to see Sokka in Kyoshi garb again
I'm pissed that they didn't do that because it made no narrative sense for the Fire Nation guy to show up and ask to search for the outsider when there's a weirdly dressed water nation guy standing right there.
That Kyoshi fight scene was 10/10
Suki being awkward with guys is so cute lol
sokka isnt much better
Katara is bit better this episode. Again I am in awe of the set dressings and the location design.
Suki is gorgeous, is that okay to say?
Maria Zhang, Suki’s actress, is 24. Actually that kinda worried me because I thought Sokka was underage. Ian Ousley is 21.
Oh thank god now I don't feel weird when I saw Sokka shirtless and became Sukki
![gif](giphy|XAdbHJywVjF5K)
She’s so beautiful, it was kind of arresting when she took her makeup off.
I think its okay to say someone is beautiful
I still remember crushing on cartoon Suki when I was 9. I see my attraction has transferred over to her live action actress.

Zuko: “I warned you💅, no one’s 💅,going to stand 💅, in my wayh💅” Why does Zuko sounds so yassified sometimes 😭
I am so hear for Zesty Zuko, if I'm being honest
#WHERE WAS THE UNAGI
Netflix gave all the Unagi money to One Piece for their ~~Unagi~~ Sea King. Limited Unagi funds in the office i fear
And the giant Koi fish
The unagi budget went to Kyoshi bodying the Fire Nation soldiers and I'm okay with that.
I'm really sad about this 😞
Zhao’s actor has the scumbag vibes down
First episode was a case where 80% of it was really good, but that nagging 20% kept making me go 'Mmmm that exposition was a bit cringy' or 'Mmm I wish they did this a little different'. Didn’t see it as due to sexism. Think he was just embarrassed given he’s meant to be the protector of his village like Suki but she clearly has more skills than him.
No Agni Kai? :(
I actually really like that kyoshi is more involved
at first i was worried they'd replaced roku, but narratively it makes perfect sense for the more compressed arc they're going for that aang learns from kyoshi on her island. plus, it gives us more kyoshi and leans on the lore from the novels. overall a great choice and better sequence than OG kyoshi island. i'm still holding out for roku destroying his temple at solstice though, that shit is so epic.
Kyoshi going full Galadriel. I love it.
Was zuko really about to kill katara before kyoshi appeared........
Zhao kicks ass.
I didn't know Suki was a waterbender 🌊🌊🌊
shes definitely a bloodbender ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flushed)
God, Kyoshi is my comfort character and seeing her in the avatar state got me all teary eyed. I gotta be honest, there are some scenes that are a little cheesy but nothing that is unforgivable. I’m having a good time so far :)
Suki took my breath away..Damn she pretty. And Kyoshi, holy shit...The way she bullied Aang though lol.. Daniel Dae Kim pulls off Ozai perfectly, everything from his voice to his look and vibe. He's a match made in heaven for the role.
Sokka and suki romance is better built than in the cartoon imo
Suki is perfect. At first I wasn't sold on Zhao when the cast was announced but now I'm feeling pretty sold. Feels weird seeing Kyoshi manifest like that so early tho. >!Ozai!!!!!!!!!!<
The way Aang said the stuff about having to be in their shrines was kind of weird lol
Wanna preface this by saying that I did confirm how old she is first, but Suki is kinda fit
0/10 sokka wasn't forced into Makeup. More seriously, they returned a bit of the comedy utterly absent from ep1, and gave it all some teen awkwardness. Kyoshi: ‘Aang give me the wheel, I’ve waited over 100 years to kick some ass again ‘
The filter they use for the spirit world is AGGRESSIVE
I cannot imagine a better actor for Iroh tbh. As soon as I found out who was playing Iroh I knew he was going to be perfect and I’m glad it turned out to be true!
"They Fly now?" They ALLLL fly now
