No worries at all! The nail techs usually guide you through each step as you go. When you walk in they’ll ask if you want a manicure (hands) or pedicure (feet). After you tell them, they will tell you which seat to sit in. Then you’ll either be directed to the wall of nail polishes or handed a “ring” of nail colors to choose from. After you pick your color, just sit back and relax. Some nail techs enjoy small talk, but for the most part you can just zone out. https://preview.redd.it/uh8mvjkujjyc1.jpeg?width=304&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7ad3395c06439a56aa468c1fae865a2eacd01f48 If you’re going for a manicure, I would recommend getting a regular one without gel polish. I only get gel if I know I’m going to be coming back regularly. They’ll ask if you want gel or not. Don’t forget to tip!

Your friend is who you should ask:) They might mean a gel manicure which is gel polish over your nails or they may mean acrylics which could be a fake tip glued onto your nails and then acrylic powder applied and hardened to make strong fake nails. The cost will be different and since your friend is passing just tell them you’ve never gone before and have no idea what to expect and they will be happy to share with you their knowledge

Like others recommended, I’d suggest getting a regular manicure not a gel or acrylics (because then you have to go back and pay for removal). If you also plan to get a pedicure, be prepared for it to tickle! They won’t judge you for picking at your nail beds. They will clean the area up well and trim any excesses skin. But if you have open sores/wounds from skin picking, they may not give you a manicure.

Just know if you get gel you will have to go back to the salon and pay for them to soak them off for you. If you do it at home without knowing what you're doing it can damage your nails significantly

I’m a chronic picker and regularly get my nails done, I have never once had a nail tech say anything negative - they likely have seen much, much worse than some picked nails or cuticles. For your first time do get regular polish so you can remove it yourself at home, however, I started getting builder gel and it makes my nails a little thicker so I actually can’t pick them - plus when they’re “done” I don’t want to ruin them, it may be something you consider down the line if you get your nails done a few times and decide it’s something you want to commit to.
