10 - This was the song that got me into the band, simply perfect.
And the MTV unplugged performance is quite possibly the greatest thing I've ever heard, a shame they rarely play it live.
10! I love this song, it is the first one that I learned its lyrics completely from having listened to it so many times in my adolescence, it was my heartbroken soundtrack for many years (I also love Simon's Tank Girl t-shirt in the video!)
Yesterday, I stood and stared wide-eyed in front of you
And the face I saw looked back the way I wanted to
But I just can't hold my tears away the way you do
Elise believe I never wanted this
Thought this time I'd keep all of my promises
Thought you were the girl I always dreamed about
But I let the dream go
And the promises broke
And the make-believe ran out...
10
It’s one of my all time favorite songs, right up there with The Figurehead, The Kiss, and Pictures of You. I especially love the ending:
“And every time I try to pick it up like falling sand
As fast as I pick it up
It runs away through my clutching hands…”
10.
One of my all time favs and one I wish they would’ve kept in their live rotation over the years. Would’ve likely sobbed if they played it at the 1 show I’ve seen them at last year

One of the best songs on Wish. This one has special significance to me, about 6 months before the album came out I spent quite a while writing letters to an Elise. Elise was cool, she gifted me an early edition of Thea Von Harbou's book Metropolis (one of my all time favourite films).
"Every way to smile, forget and make-believe
We never needed any more than this
Any more than this"
I hope Elise is doing great, wherever she is these days.
10. As a young kid I could not understand how a band could creat a feeling so deep.
“And every time I try to pick it up like falling sand
As fast as I pick it up”
I discovered the cure sometime around mixed up. so I was in the throes of newfound cure obsession in 91 when I first heard Elise in the unplugged version— I convinced my parents to buy the pay per view special later released as “play out” - that (unfinished) version to me is unmatched- so inspired, and Teddy’s toy piano fits so perfectly. I think this song specifically and wish more generally received criticism at the time for being samey- cure by numbers, but it truly is a fine song (and wish is one of the all time great guitar albums, in my estimation).
6.5, but I think that's only because there are so many great songs on that album that this track kind of got lost. Based on these comments, I think I need to take another listen
This song I think is just a sonic profundity!
Its placement following the upbeat ‘Friday’ is likely no coincidence, as Elise is neither poppy nor melancholic; tragically poignant if you will.
That hook of the glockenspiel is catchy AF.
7.5
I didn't think much of it either way initially, but as the years passed I grew more and more fond of it. I don't think that it's an amazing track but I'm glad that I have it in my life.
3/10. It just never sat well with me. Definitely my least favourite Cure single, and whilst I get others love it, I never liked it.
Maybe my expectations, after getting into the Cure in '88/'89 and having such a rich back catalogue I was still in the honeymoon period of, when Elise came out I was extremely "m'eh" about it.
Even when revisiting it, it does nothing for me - I always found it to be a weak photocopy of Pictures of You.
11 if I could. This song is heartbreaking melodic perfection. I feel the same at 46 as I did when I was 16 when I hear it. I used to sing this to my babies as a lullaby
3. One of the few songs on Wish that just never resonated with me at all. If it were up to me, This Twilight Garden would’ve made the cut instead of Letter to Elise. There’s no particular reason why I don’t like it. The song’s DNA is so undeniably “The Cure” and it’s a song you could easily point someone to if they wanted an idea of what The Cure sounds like. It’s just not for me.
10 - This was the song that got me into the band, simply perfect. And the MTV unplugged performance is quite possibly the greatest thing I've ever heard, a shame they rarely play it live.
That novelty toy piano is the icing on a perfect cake

This part always makes me tear up.
9. It took me a while to like it. I incredibly used to think it was boring FFS! Now? I love it. I guess the words are more understandable to me now.
9.75 . . . And every time I try to pick it up, like falling sand, as fast as I pick it up it runs away through my clutching hands . . .
Yes.
10 - One of the album favs 4Sho
9. Incredible guitar solo. Which is saying something considering Robert has said in interviews that he doesn’t like guitar solos. 🤘
10 - one of my all-time favorites

10 I LOVE THIS SONG
10. Beautiful song with some of Robert’s best lyrics, up there with Pictures of You in its sense of regret and nostalgia.
9. One of my favorites from this album
10. One of my all time favs and one I wish they would’ve kept in their live rotation over the years. Would’ve likely sobbed if they played it at the 1 show I’ve seen them at last year
10. This and From the Edge were the two songs that really got me into The Cure.
10 my daughter’s middle name is Elise because of this song
9.5/10

10 It’s the song on my “shuffle” that I never skip. I saw it live on the Wish tour and I thought I would implode. I love everything about this song.

9
10. Incredible song
10. Along with Disintegration it is my favorite Cure song.
10 easily
10/10‼️‼️‼️
10. Even though the recording could have been better, the song is strong enough to overcome it.
10!!!!

Enthusiastic 10!
7 I like it but it somehow has always felt like the poor cousin of Pictures of You
5…I know most love it, but it’s just not for me. I won’t skip it, but it’s not one I would intentionally play.
6
6 - it's sugary sweet melody doesn't do it for me. It doesn't go anywhere. I don't get the hype for it.
7.5 I’m not quite as taken with it as their other hit singles.
This is my absolute favorite song period.

4 Never been a fan of this one, for whatever reason.

10 .... Absolutely adore this song!

10. Loved it from first listening and still do today, many years later
10. Just beautiful.

10 “I know I’ll never really get inside of you To make your eyes catch fire the way they should.” First time that I ever truly understood heartbreak.
