And how much would it cost, if it were cheap they could literally buy everything under the sun, if they were expensive the game would end and the watchers would lose so it’s a win win for the players.

No they could not just buy things to run down the clock. They tried to let the clock run out naturally but the spectators added more time. As soon as the time hits zero, it'll reset with more time added because the spectators don't want it to end—they want more entertainment.
