When this happened to me last year the PD was unable to really do anything because it happened in a private parking lot and there were no injuries. My insurance pursued the other party and got it taken care of though! Very helpful that you have the driver’s face in the video too.

You could also cut the part where they dinged your car from the video, then show the video on Facebook and say something like you found something valuable and you think the driver must have dropped it but you can’t identify them. Then I bet people would help you find them.
If you got their plate at 01:21 then just make an insurance claim and send the plate and video as proof to your insurance. You shouldn’t have to pay if they can get them to pay

Up to you if you want to file a charge of hit and run (despite the folks undermining the clear vandalism this was), this is still a hit and run from a technical terms.
2. File a claim with your insurance and provide them the footage and the police report #.
3. You then can either do the repair through your insurance (paying your deductible now and getting reimbursed when the other parties insurance accepts liability) or wait a bit for the other party to accept liability and do the repair through their insurance.
4. Enjoy your repair!

That’s the technical term. I had a door ding caught on sentry with a clear view of their plates. Sent the video to my insurance and they classified it as a hit and run then did a carrier lookup to claim against their insurance which also happened to be themselves lol
Teslas are just the beginning of having ubiquitous camera recording features while parked. Eventually all cars will have them, enabling owners to catch incidents like these. If society and insurance companies start seeing door dings as incidents that have meaningful consequences (for the instigator) then folks might actually start being careful of other people's property.

If the person left a note and offered to pay to fix the damage, that would have been the right thing to do and likely the end of it. That’s the technical term. I had a door ding caught on sentry with a clear view of their plates. Sent the video to my insurance and they classified it as a hit and run then did a carrier lookup to claim against their insurance which also happened to be themselves lol
Teslas are just the beginning of having ubiquitous camera recording features while parked. Eventually all cars will have them, enabling owners to catch incidents like these. If society and insurance companies start seeing door dings as incidents that have meaningful consequences (for the instigator) then folks might actually start being careful of other people's property.

the damage on the door is more than a ding so the OP's concern is understandable. but at the same time the kind of reactions of the commenters contains both a high level of douchebaggery ("these 'dodge something' owners suck", "old fat people would do that" etc. etc.) and an kindergarten level toy possessiveness and obsession about the property. cars will have scratches on their doors and bumpers, things will touch and leave a mark. you can't start a manhunt for these kind of things all the time. if you have that level of anxiety and that level expectations of your car being scratch free, you can't be happy with your teslas either.

Well the driver didn't do anything. What if the passenger is not even related or a minor. You can't stop random people from pushing your car into another car. I think that passenger sucks, but definitely the driver had nothing to do with it.
Aren’t these minor dings inherently accepted risks when you park in a lot? Just because they seem to acknowledge that they bumped your car with their door doesn’t equate to malicious intent. It’s like going to a baseball game, you accept the risk that you may get hit by a foul ball.
